PUTTING DOWN ROOTS Alison Talbot of littleRÜTZ By Kelli Scott
H
ow does a busy mom with a new baby at home launch her own business? For Alison Talbot, it all started with the floors. “My husband and I bought this really charming 1922 house in Wenatchee and it’s got the original fir floors, which are so gorgeous, and also so splintery. I was picking splinters from my baby son and I realized very quickly that he needed something more than soft socks to protect his little feet. I just decided to make him some little leather moccasins.” So she bought some leather scraps and went to work creating a pair of tiny shoes for baby Jasper. “And then at play dates other people started asking me, ‘Could you whip up a pair for my son or my niece,’ and it just kind of went from there.” She named her new footwear company littleRÜTZ, pronounced “little roots.” “I just felt like roots were very grounding, and here we are putting down roots in Wenatchee as we start our family. And I think of little feet. The tree of life. Children. It just felt kind of natural…And I like that the Ü looked like a smiley face, too.” Alison soon realized that, while there are a lot of moccasins for babies on the market, most are made using lots of nasty chemicals and heavy metals. She found a leather manufacturer in Germany that makes leather in a healthier, non-toxic way: with vegetable dyes and a natural tanning process.
“I realized there are not many healthy shoe options out there, especially for the soft soles, so I thought I could fill that niche.” She started sewing more of the comfy, durable, completely adorable shoes, usually during Jasper’s nap time or late at night. “I’m often very tired but I put on some female stand up comedians on Netflix…and so when Jasper goes to nap, it’s kind of like my self time. I’m absentmindedly cutting
TRACI DRY
out moccasins and laughing ... to myself, trying to be quiet while he sleeps.” And her husband, Jeff McDonald, is totally supportive. “My husband will help with Jasper some evenings by taking him on little adventures so I can get some work done. They’ve hiked up Mission Ridge, Lake Clara/ Marion, and Saddlerock just the two of them while I get things done… Jeff also makes dinner sometimes so I can cut and sew moccasins. So, it’s not ALL done at nap time

to have nights where, OK, I’m going to sit down with my husband and chat or watch a show together, be absentminded, or tonight I am just going to bed because it was a hard day or because he didn’t nap well, and tomorrow I’ll get back at it. So yes, things do get pushed off, but because this is still so small, there is that leeway. And I find motivation every time I order new leather. I get really excited about the creative process. What colors do I want to put together? This fall I’m doing some cool things with color blocking and infusing new life into the moccasins.” and bed times, just mostly.” And then there’s Jasper. Now Alison cuts out the moccs at her kitchen table “He’s been my inspiration for a lot of different things. and has carved out a small space on her sun porch Our garden is insane this year. I just wanted to plant where she sews. everything because I wanted to show him everything. “I told my husband, ‘Do not put any of your projects He’s out there helping me pick tomatoes and dig over here. This is my space to clutter and clean. I can’t have you putting dirty garden tools on my cutting board.’ potatoes and just getting his hands dirty. (And with the shoe business…) “I look back and see Jasper sucking on So I’ve gotten protective of my space.” his foot in his car seat and it’s like, well, OK, it’s a healthy I asked Alison how in the world she has the energy to leather.” cut, sew and grow her company at the end of long days You can find littleRÜTZ on the company’s website, on with a baby. Because, quite frankly, I couldn’t do it. How Instagram and Facebook, at Trick Pony gift shop in Twisp, does she find the motivation to keep working? “I don’t know that I’ve found the right rhythm for myself, and soon at the Mazama Store and American Shoe Shop. but I’m learning. I’ve decided to give myself permission
And, if you or someone you know is looking for some part-time work, (and have an industrial sewing machine), contact Alison. “As I grow and expand I want to be able to keep up with demand. Part of being a business owner is recognizing your limits and preparing to handle growth (a good thing!). LittleRÜTZ is ready to bring on that team member this fall! ive business women opened their minds and hearts to talk about the trials and joys of entrepreneurship in the Wenatchee Valley. Overcoming fears, recognizing opportunities, finding balance in work and family and discovering new aspects about
their businesses and themselves were just a few of the challenges in starting up and managing a successful enterprise, they said. The female entrepreneurial panel was the highlight of “Women Rule the World,” a breakfast discussion hosted by

2016 Women In Business Dew of the Dilly Deli, a Wenatchee restaurant; Brianne Vertrees of Merriment Party Goods, a downtown Wenatchee retailer; and certified public accountant Rosa Cruz of Chelan. Moderated by Allison Williams, the city of Wenatchee’s executive services director, the panel addressed reasons why North Central Washington is a good place to start a business, how to overcome challenges and barriers faced by women business owners, how to maintain balance between work and family, why so few women start businesses, what the future might bring and other topics. A few choice comments: Why start a business in NCW? Vertrees: There’s nowhere else we wanted to live. Plus, the resources here are fantastic. I knew if I opened a business here, I’d have the tech to work with people from all over the U.S. Baldwin: Yes, it’s a beautiful and supportive community that has terrific infrastructure. The PUDs have established (highspeed) fiber networks, and the work force is wonderful. We’ve never had any trouble finding people to work. What were challenges and barriers? Dew: I got into business in 2008, peak of the recession, when I was 24 years old. People looked at me and thought, “24 and a female? And she’s starting a business in this economy?” Lots of discouraging comments at first. Cruz: The real challenge for me was setting up personal boundaries on when to work and not work. I mean, when you
work for yourself, you work all hours to get the next client. The difficult thing was to set up office hours and stick to them. Vertrees: I was lucky to have a supportive family and entrepreneurial circle because my greatest challenges were my doubts, lack of self-confidence and self-defeating fears. Two years after opening my business, I’m still working to make sure those things don’t stop me. How do you achieve balance? Dew: Grabbing a few moments for myself, even if it’s just driving alone in the car, is important. Also, surrounding myself with family and friends who are like-minded, supportive entrepreneurs. Dalpez: Maintaining flexibility in my schedule and designing my business to fit my own lifestyle. Also, learning to say “no” was a hard thing to do, but I learned not to spread myself too thin. Learn to make the best decisions not only for business, but also for your life and family. Vertrees: Sometimes balance isn’t always realistic for me, but I try to do intentional things to bring joy into my life. Often if I’m feeling unbalanced, I try to change the way I think (about a problem). Happy, joyful thinking can change how I feel, which can change how I approach a challenge. Why so few female founders of businesses? Cruz: Lots of reasons. There’s a lot of fear, a lack of confidence and lack of start-up money. Also, a fear of (physical and emotional) burnout when you realize there’s no real way

to “turn off” the business. For me, I faced all this by looking to self-development and learning to plan ahead. Baldwin: About being afraid … you’ve got to reach a point where you’re more fearful of not grabbing an opportunity than fearing failure. Dalpez: We’ve got to help women break through the fear factor, and I’m seeing more of this every day. More and more women are moving forward in male-oriented businesses. For instance, being a handyman — or a handyperson. Dew: Lots of women have ideas and plans, but few get the funding. But I’ve learned that if you have a good idea and the passion to go with it, then money can always be found. What makes you unstoppable in pursuit of your dreams? Cruz: Women (entrepreneurs) need to realize their strengths and weaknesses and play up their strengths, make them work in your favor. Vertrees: I’m completely motivated by the thought that this is my one beautiful, wonderful life to live. How am I going to use it? When I’m 108 and looking back on my life, I know my regrets won’t involve failures, but the dreams I never chased.

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN I DRESSED UP FOR WORK By Kelli Scott
H
ere in Wenatchee, people dress for comfort. You see a lot of men and women in Tevas walking around downtown. A lot of fleeces and outdoor gear. The Wenatchee look says: “Hey, I might hike or ski later today. But probably I’m just a slob who wants to be comfy.” Even at the office, people in the valley seem to place a lot more stock in comfort than style. T-shirts, running shoes and jeans for work? Fine in Wenatchee! Didn’t get around to washing your hair this week? That’s what baseball hats are for, bro! Completely work-appropriate here, especially if you work for a non-profit or have anything to do with salmon. But really, I am not bashing your look, Wenatchee. I totally understand the whole comfort thing. After spending my 20s painfully clip-clopping around D.C. in heels and skirt suits for work, I have happily settled into the Wenatchee “style,” if that is what we are calling it. I bought my first pair of Danskos last year, which made me a little sad and caused me to take a hard look at my own mortality, but, if I’m being totally honest, I like that my feet don’t bleed every day now. Plus, now that I have kids, I just can’t
look good and stylish very often. Some of you can. I can’t. There’s just too much ketchup in my life now. Too much pee. And yet…
KEENA ELLARD
There is something to be said about suiting up for work, about putting your best foot forward and dressing for the job you want and all that. And so, just for the fun of it and because I felt like a little pick-me-up, I dressed nicer than usual for work last week. And yes, I know…This post should really be titled, “What happened when I basically just didn’t dress like a total trash bucket for work,” because, come on, these outfits are not super fancy. But still, I stayed away from jeans and wore actual heels, so I think that counts as dressing up around here. Here is what I wore: (I’m missing Thursday’s outfit pic. It was raining that day. I just had to slob it up, OK? Move along.) Here are some observations: Taking headless outfit selfies in the bathroom at work is even more depressing than you think it is. Don’t do it. Iron your clothes. I realize now that my blue stripe shirt looks like I pulled it off a pile on the floor, which I may have. (see next observation.) Plan ahead. Want to look pulled-together during the week? Spend a few minutes on Sunday night planning your outfits. I forgot about this step and ended up frantically pulling things off the closet floor every morning in a rush to get out the door.

When you get home from work at the end of the day, immediately take off the Adult Human Clothes and put back on your Mom Rags — yoga pants, sweats, mumus, whatever. With kids and a dog, if I wore these clothes around my house they’d last about a minute. Stay-at-home moms, I don’t really know what to tell you. I tried to groom and get dressed occasionally during the few years I stayed home, but usually I just ended up in workout
clothes and a ponytail. Honestly, getting to wear real clothes again was one of the biggest motivating factors for me when I went back to work. (Bad feminist, Kelli! Bad!) Wearing actual work-ish clothes at work made me feel a tiny bit more confident and focused on getting stuff done. It was like, OK, I’ve got the business lady uniform on, I must mean business. Let’s tackle this inbox and then head up to the old bathroom for a selfie!

If you dress nice for work, yes, you may be the only one in the office in a skirt and shiny shoes, but isn’t it better to be slightly overdressed than to be the one wearing Tevas and socks to a staff meeting? (I sense hundreds of Wenatchee heads shaking “No”.)

PIERCING PARLOR PUTS PROFESSIONALISM FIRST By Holly Thorpe Integrity Piercing, tucked away from the main road at 1207 N. Wenatchee Ave., shirks a lot of piercing studio stereotypes. Bright, warm lights, jewelry displays, and neutral colors greet clients in the reception room. But it’s what goes on in the back that really sets Integrity apart. Owner and founder Chrissy Shull prides herself on the highest standards of piercing procedure, cleanliness and equipment. A shaky regulatory system in Washington makes getting a license without prior experience easy. “Not only could you get your license in the mail without ever having done a piercing or tattoo and not having to take a test, but when you open a facility they don’t inspect it to first make sure that you’ve got everything you need and that you’re handling it right,” she said. “They’re so strict about restaurants and hair and agriculture, but somehow we just kind of fall through the cracks.” At Integrity, it works a lot differently. A lot of the work Shull does is around education. Shull said people will sometimes come in and ask why Integrity’s prices are different than at other studios. She’ll explain to them that the jewelry, which is all medical grade, and the piercings at Integrity are guaranteed. That means if a piercing by Shull is rejected or doesn’t work out even with proper care, Shull will re-pierce at no cost. But one of the biggest differences is the work
that goes into cleanliness at the studio. “We actually have the autoclave in the room and it’s really awesome, I love it,” she said. “If you were getting pierced you’d actually get to see your tools, Q-tips, jewelry, needle, everything, loaded into a cassette in front of you.” You’ll then initial an integrator strip that will confirm the sterilization. Everything will be loaded into the autoclave and finally, it will be opened in front of you, and you’ll double-check the strip to ensure the process worked. “You then get to see the autoclave physically opened and you get to see the strip you initialed so you can verify that strip did it’s thing,” she said. “We do that just so people know, ‘OK, I’ve seen the whole process.’ ” Her high standards come from over a decade of training. Shull has been piercing for 15 years — a long time in the piercing industry. She has been a member of the Association of Professional Piercers since 2003, serving for a time as the organization’s secretary. She turned to piercing after deciding against a career doing other types of body art. “Long story short, I wanted to be a tattoo artist. I originally spent a little bit of time doing that and realized that I wasn’t going to be a world-class tattoo artist,” she said. “I spent enough time

2016 Women In Business in studios to realize that I really liked piercing and I discovered I was actually good at it.” Before opening Integrity, Shull pierced around the country from 2003 to 2013. She worked in Oklahoma, California, Arizona, and most recently, Oregon. In Oregon she was the vice chair of the Oregon Board of Electrologists and Body Art Practitioners and the manager of two High Priestess piercing locations in Salem and Roseburg. Then, in 2013, she returned home to her family and friends. “I wanted to open the business. I wish would have been here when I started my career,” she said. She said that once she began working with APP and looking for high-quality piercing studios, she realized that there aren’t many good options in this part of the state. “I was driving all the way up to Seattle to get pierced because I wanted someone who was part of the APP, who had training and was using good quality jewelry. That knew what they were doing,” she said. “I used to come back to visit my family and notice that there wasn’t really any of that here.” So she opened her own studio in July of 2013 — and gave it a name that “embodied everything we wanted to be.” For the first two years, Shull was the only person working at the studio. Now, she has another employee working reception and in training to begin doing piercings. They attend trainings every summer in Las Vegas to keep their education current and their skills sharp. “It was a slow start, but I wanted to start out slow and steady,” she said. “I wanted to get a feel for what people in Wenatchee were looking for and what was going to be popular around here before I invested a ton into my inventory.” Plus, more quality time with her customers. Shull emphasizes the relationship she has with her clients. She said she gets to know about people personally, and all of their reasons for getting pierced. “It’s nice to get to know people on that level,” she said. “We have some of the coolest clients.” One client, from her time in Oregon, was an 80-year-old woman getting her ears pierced for the first time. “She had never wanted her ears pierced before that,” Shull said. “The only reason she got them done is because her mother had passed away and her mother had a bunch of really cool earrings — and so she finally got her ears pierced so she could wear her mother’s collection of

earrings.” According to Shull, her studio should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, gender, or anything else. “I wanted to set up a place that had a boutique-feel that was very all-ages friendly and appropriate, where even the most conservative people could come in and feel comfortable,” she said. “I wanted a place where if that 80-year-old grandmother wants to come in, she’s not going to feel out of place.” Shull also does piercing for children — with parental consent, of course. She said that if a child can understand what it’s going to be like and how to take care of it, she’ll pierce their ears. She said that it’s a rewarding experience to help kids make that choice. “I love that feeling when a kid gets a piercing and they’re so scared, but they’re brave and they do it and there’s that moment of like ‘I just overcame that fear,’ ” Shull said. “It’s cool because piercing is the first time in a kid’s life where they consciously choose to go through something painful because they want the end result.” She said Integrity tends to attract the types of people who are willing to spend more for higher standards and better quality jewelry, like medical professionals. “Most people will pay more for something when they know what they’re paying for,” she said. “I pay more for my tires knowing that they’re going to put my snow tires on for free and that they’re going to change back to my other tires for free and that they’ll balance them every 5,000 miles.” Of course, there’s a certain amount of danger that comes with working with needles all day. Shull has to be particularly diligent to ensure contaminated sharps are disposed of properly and don’t put her or her clients at risk. She also said that a big part of her job is being honest with clients about what piercings are safe for them, and about how to care for them. While she can do a lot to keep things clean in the studio, it’s up to the client to care for the piercing once they leave. As Shull put it: “It is a partnership.” While many studios do tattooing, as well, Shull said she keeps Integrity a piercing-only studio on purpose. It sends one very important message to her clients: “We do one thing and we do it very well.”
