On behalf of myself and Princesses Sami and Emily, we would like to welcome you to the 97th annual Apple Blossom Festival. We are so very grateful and honored for the opportunity to serve as the royalty for such an amazing community. Whether you’re enjoying the extraordinary views or basking in the sunshine on the Columbia River, the Wenatchee Valley has a 360 degree view that will mesmerize you. We are blessed to have tall and vibrant mountains filled with life all year round. We are fortunate to have the second oldest festival in Washington State. This celebration would not be possible without the hard work of each and every member of the Wenatchee Valley. Our community is filled with families that have been here for generations, individuals that have helped it grow, and orchards that have made our city thrive. Over 100,000 people will witness the magic of the 11-day festival. Individuals from all over come to experience the excitement and joy this festival brings to all. The children dance to the music being played at the food fair, and the aroma of the funnel cakes fill the valley. Apple Blossom allows us all to see what our friends and neighbors are capable of, while we all come together to celebrate the passions of those around us. We hope you take the chance to soak up the sunshine at the 2016 Apple Blossom festival. We can guarantee you a good time, because it is “Simply the Best.”

On behalf of the Wenatchee Applarians, First Lady Irene and I welcome you to the 2016 Washington State Apple Blossom Festival. The Wenatchee Applarians are the official hosting organization for the cities of Wenatchee and East Wenatchee. As such, our members host the Apple Blossom Festival hospitality weekend, escort the visiting floats through our parade. Each year the Applarians provide a $6000 educational scholarship to our Apple Blossom Queen, and act as ambassadors traveling to other festivals throughout Washington, Applarian Chancellor Oregon and Canada to accompany our Royalty and Steve Soth & Lady Irene their float in these wonderful parades and cities. Under the direction of our 1st Vice Chancellor Steve Lacy and wife Debra, we have planned a fun filled weekend of hospitality for our Northwest Festival Friends. Our goal is to provide you all with a weekend that is “Simply the Best”. We invite you to join us for this year’s festivities. Enjoy the events planned for our Hospitality weekend, the activities taking place throughout the community, or just enjoy the excitement of being part of “Simply the Best” Apple Blossom Festival.
Director General Debbie Gurnard
I would like to personally welcome everyone to the 97th Washington State Apple Blossom Festival “Simply the Best”!! We are a valley that is rich in tradition, and we love how our festival brings family and friends together. The Wenatchee Valley is very special to me as I was born and raised here, and I am so proud to call this community my home. Our 11 day festival has something for everyone! We kick off with our Carnival, Food Fair, and Entertainment in the Park. Then it's the Youth Parade, Classy Chassis Parade and our Grand Director General, Debbie Gurnard Parade. There is also a top notch production of the & her husband Don Apple Blossom Musical, “Mary Poppins”, and you won’t want to miss the “Apple Blossom Cruiz In” car show on the Ave!! Our sponsors and our volunteers continue to make this festival the amazing Festival it is. Our sponsors always bring forward their tremendous and very generous support, and our volunteers step forward year after year and put in the hours that it takes to make The Apple Blossom Festival happen. The Wenatchee Applarians are also a very big part of making our festival so successful. We could not do what we do without them. It is truly an honor to serve as this year’s Director General, and on behalf of the Festival Board, Chairpeople and our amazing Staff we would like to thank you for joining us for the 2016 Apple Blossom Festival. We hope your time here is “Simply the Best”!!

“Memories Forever Blossom” by artist Kaytie Crandell
Kaytie was born in 1938 and raised in the Wenatchee Valley. She married Bob Crandell in 1959 and they began their journey that was Crandell Fruit Company. Together they were blessed with many years as fruit growers of the “Top Color” label and proudly continued the tradition in the “Apple Capital of the World”. They grew, packed, stored and shipped their apples, pears and cherries throughout the United States and across the globe. Kaytie enjoyed a busy life with the business and raising three daughters, Darcy, Debbie and Dana. Kaytie and Bob joined the Wenatchee Applarians in 1974 and became involved with the Apple Blossom Festival Association with Bob serving as Director General in 1978. They celebrated many new friends met through the variety of Festivals and events they attended.

Kaytie has always enjoyed craft projects including ceramics and tole painting. That passion prompted her to try watercolor painting and in 2013 she took a few lessons from local artist Lila Putman of East Wenatchee. She knew right away that a passion was ignited. Kaytie moved from Wenatchee that year and married Kent Christenson and they now live in Everett WA. She has continued Watercolor classes with Kay Barnes of the Eden Gallery, and painting has become a great love to her.

Both Garry and Patti were born and raised in the Wenatchee Valley. Garry graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1965, and Patti graduated from Eastmont High School in 1966 and was a Top Ten Apple Blossom Candidate. Garry and Patti attended Washington State University and that is where they met. They married in 1968 and Garry joined the Army Reserves in 1969. They lived in Spokane where Patti worked in banking and Garry worked in the floor covering industry. In 1974 they moved back to the Wenatchee Valley and in 1976 they opened the Floor Factory in downtown Wenatchee. Patti and Garry have a huge commitment for community development and volunteering. Garry is involved in Commercial Real Estate and Property Development, and has restored 2 downtown buildings to the original exterior appearance. He has been a member of the Downtown Rotary since 1982 and is the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow and 1999 Rotary Paul Scea Fellow. Garry was an Elks Lodge Member, a board member for Boy Scouts of America, Past President of the Wenatchee Downtown Association, and was on the spearhead committee of the Streetscape project for downtown. He is also a Quest for Economic Development board member. Patti has been a member of the Wenatchee Central Lions Club since 1990. She is a former President and Treasurer and was International District Governor. She also is a recipient of the Melvin’s Jones Fellow and Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. She was Apple Blossom Volunteer of the Year and received the Wenatchee Downtown Association Award of Gratitude for all her volunteer work downtown pulling weeds, planting flowers and picking up trash. Patti loves Apple Blossom and has been the director of the Pageant multiple times! Every year, for 30 years, she and Garry have been a part of the set up and tear down crew for Pageant! Patti and Garry wanted to give back to the 7 remaining candidates that don’t continue on as Royalty, so they created and provide the $1000 scholarships for the remaining 7 candidates. They are both retired from the Floor Factory and enjoy collecting antiques and antique cars, traveling, boating, skiing and spending time in Chelan. They have 2 children and 5 grandchildren. Patti & Garry will be honored at the All Service Club Luncheon. Congratulations Garry and Patti, and thank you for all you do for our community and the Apple Blossom Festival! Garry & Patti Sparks
The Year
The Apple Citizen of the Year award began in 1981 to honor the roots of the Festival and the leaders that make this the Apple Capital of the World. David Smeltzer is a 1971 graduate of Wenatchee High School. He graduated in 1976 from Washington State University with a degree in accounting. David began his career with Peshastin Fruit Growers Association as an accountant. In 1978 he went to work for Cascadian Fruit Shippers as office manager, then eventually as General Manager. When Cascadian was purchased by Custom Apple/Starr Ranch Growers in 1997, David transitioned on as plant manager and currently serves as the CFO. David was a long time board member of the Wenatchee Traffic Association where he served a two-year term as President of the Board. During the Industry association consolidation process he represented the Traffic Association on the industry task force, and then served on the transitional board of the newly formed Washington State Tree Fruit Association. He is a board member and past Chairman of the Northwest Horticultural Council, a past member of the US Apple Association Board, and is a past board member and chairman of Central Washington Hospital. He also currently serves on the board of the Northwest Fruit Exporters. He is a member of the Saddlerock Evangelical Presbyterian Church. David and his wife Ruth have been married for 39 years and have 3 children and 3 grandchildren. He enjoys spending his spare time traveling, being in the outdoors and spending time with his family at Lake Chelan. David will be honored at the All Service Club Luncheon on Wednesday, May 4, and will also ride in the Stemilt Growers Grand Parade on May 7. David Smeltzer

STORY
“Sherman came to our family through a friend who knew that he needed a new home. He follows me around the house and he tells me when my little boy is going to have a seizure. Connection in the community is invaluable. Without connections, we wouldn’t have Sherman.” -Melissa R., Gesa Member Read Melissa’s full story at gesa.com/mystory.
