Applarian Chancellor Steve Lacy & Debra Lacy
On behalf of the Wenatchee Applarians, First Lady Debra and I welcome you to the 2017 Washington State Apple Blossom Festival. The Wenatchee Applarians are the official hosting organization for the cities of Wenatchee and East Wenatchee. As such our members host the Apple Blossom Festival hospitality weekend and escort the visiting floats through our parade. Each year the Applarians provide a $6000 educational scholarship to our Apple Blossom Queen, act as ambassadors traveling to other Applarian Chancellor festivals throughout Washington, Oregon and Steve Lacy & his wife Debra Canada to accompany our Royalty and their float in these wonderful parades and cities. Under the direction of our 1st Vice Chancellor Bryan Campbell and wife Jody, we have planned a fun filled weekend of hospitality for our Northwest Festival Friends. Our goal is to make sure you enjoy your “Awesome Blossom” experience. We invite you to join us for this year’s festivities. Enjoy the events planned for our Hospitality weekend, the activities taking place throughout the community or just enjoy the excitement of our “Awesome Blossom ” weekend.”

Queen Amy Sand
On behalf of myself and Princesses Paige and Alissa, we would love to welcome you to the 98th annual Apple Blossom Festival. We are honored and thankful to have the privilege of representing this beautiful valley that we get to call home. Our festival has evolved from a very humble one-day event in Memorial park, to emerge as the second oldest and one of the grandest celebrations in Washington State. Our annual celebration is a familyoriented, community festival, featuring our people, traditions and fruit industry. Over 100,000 people will make their way to our beautiful valley to be a part of our activities. All of this couldn't be possible without the many sponsors, service clubs, and amazing volunteers. We are fortunate to live in a region of such natural beauty. Abundant sun shines on the confluence of the Wenatchee and Columbia rivers, which are framed by majestic mountains and surrounded by many acres of lush orchards. Take advantage of the many recreational opportunities we afford, such as biking the loop or enjoying one of our many hiking trails. We hope that you will immerse yourself in the diverse activities that we have to offer, such as; the Parades, Carnival, Food, Arts & Crafts Fair, and Entertainment in the Park. Young or old, there is something for everyone. We think you will find the people in our community warm and welcoming. It would be our pleasure to see each and every one of you at the 2017 Apple Blossom Festival. Bring your family and friends, and join in on the celebration of “Awesome Blossom”

Director General Mark Lewis
I would like to personally welcome all of you to the 98th Washington State Apple Blossom Festival Awesome Blossom! The rich traditions of our valley are the back drop for our annual 11day festival. I have spent nearly my entire life in Wenatchee. Growing up here, receiving my education and later my life’s work. This city has given me so much and I am proud to call it home. Our festival has something for most everyone. Entertainment, Food Fair and Arts and Director General, Crafts in Memorial Park/ Youth Parade, Grand Mark Lewis & his wife Kathy Parade, Classy Chassis Parade and this year’s “Apple Blossom” Musical “Young Frankenstein.” Don’t forget the “Cruz In” on Wenatchee Ave. on May 5th. Our many thanks to our volunteers, local merchants, individual and corporate sponsors who make this festival happen. We also thank the Wenatchee Applarians. We simply could not put on a festival of this caliber without all who have been mentioned. I feel very honored to have been asked to serve as this year’s Director General and on behalf of the Festival Board of Directors, Chairpeople, Staff and Volunteers we thank you for joining us for the 2017 Festival and hope you enjoy our “Awesome Blossom.”

The Royalty & Chaperones would like to thank Sangster Motors for donating this year’s Royal Coach: A 2017 Acadia Denali. This beautiful vehicle was presented to the Royalty at the Selection Pageant in February, and transports them in comfort and style to over 180 appearances during their reign. The Festival invites everyone to stop by and visit the staff at Sangster Motors.

Landscape watercolor artist, Paula Christen, looks to express the transformation that happens when we connect back to nature. “We are always finding the best in ourselves when we spend time in nature.” Looking at works created by Paula, you will find bold, interesting shapes and juicy color, but a chosen frugality in finishing touches. She believes that the best paintings are like a good conversation; each party adding their own comments to the discussion. Paula begins the visual story, but leaves room for details to be supplied by the viewer’s thoughts and memories. Born in Whittier California, Paula spent early years enjoying the golden state’s sunshine and developing a persistent love of salt water rimmed with sandy beaches. Her father’s position with US Fish and Wildlife later involved moving the family to Washington State; living at both Leavenworth and Entiat National Fish Hatcheries. She loved the changing seasons and discovered skiing. After graduating from high school in Entiat, Paula pursued art at Wenatchee Valley College and received her BA in Fine

Art from Central Washington University. “Creating art is my passion. It gives me a joy I can’t put to words.” Pursuing an art degree was just the foundation to becoming an artist. Seeking out the best watercolor teachers, Paula continues honing her skills by attending workshops in the US and abroad. She now shares her knowledge with others by teaching watercolor. Paula continues to connect people to nature by painting at her studio and living at the base of the Cascades. Winthrop, Washington has been her home since 1976. Apple Citizen of The Year
Official Program of the Apple Blossom Festival • appleblossom.org
There is something about being a Royalty Chaperone that hooks you into always being a part of the Apple Blossom Family. Whether it is volunteering in the office during the festival or handing out ice cream at the Youth Parade they always want to stay involved. These three past chaperones have gone beyond staying involved since being chaperones, they really have never left. Our Leman Johnson recipients are past chaperones Pat Lynn, Sally Feil and Char Allen. In 1996 Pat’s daughter Allison was a Princess and Pat was hooked! She became chaperone in 1999 and then asked her walking buddy Sally to join her in 2000, then Sally asked Char to join her for 2001. After these three ladies gave up their “crowns” as chaperones they wanted to stay involved. Pat and Sally wanted to improve our presentation to the visiting royalty so they went to local businesses and asked for items to put in a goodie bag that they hand out on Grand Parade day to all the visiting royalty. Sally and Char thought it would be fun to have an Apple Pie Bake Off, so in 2005 the Stemilt Growers Apple Pie Bake Off was created and it is the last Sunday of the Festival. We are honoring these 3 women because they do a lot of little things for the Festival and they do it because they believe in this 98 year tradition!
Pat Lynn, Sally Feil and Char Allen
The Apple Citizen of the Year award began in 1981 to honor the roots of the Festival and the leaders that make this the Apple Capital of the World. Leo is a 1974 graduate of Tulancigo High School in Mexico. He graduated in 1984 from Washington State University with a degree in Horticulture. After obtaining his degree he worked as a Fieldman at Trout, Chief Wenatchee, and Stemilt. Leo was the first Latino Fieldman and consultant in this area. With input from the fruit industry he created the Hispanic Orchard Employee Education Program (HOEEP) at Wenatchee Valley College and has been teaching that course as well as other Agriculture classes since 1991. “Leo Garcia has been an amazing resource for the tree fruit and wine grape growers industry in all of Eastern Washington since 1991 when he joined Wenatchee Valley College. From his initial involvement in the creation of the Hispanic Orchard Employee Education Program to bringing a similar program to wine grape growers, Leo continues to be the expert growers turn to for help with employee training. I am extremely proud of Leo for his many accomplishments and his deep commitment to students, agriculture and WVC.” – Dr. Jim Richardson, President of Wenatchee Valley College. “Leo puts his heart into everything he does, believing in people and honoring each and every person for their unique abilities, and teaches them to believe in themselves. Helping people get good jobs and helping them succeed is a great source of pride for him.” – Tom Auvil, Research Horticulturist with the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission. “Leo just really loves his job!” -Francisco Sarmiento Leo’s Assistant for the last 18 years. Leo and his wife Karen have been married for 38 years, have 2 children, and 1 grandchild. In his spare time, he enjoys farming, cooking up traditional Mexican cuisine, and construction including woodworking.
