Welcome to the 99th Washington State Apple Blossom Festival. Princess Jessica, Princess Sophie and I are so happy and honored to represent not only our beautiful home but also this festival that is dear to our hearts. What began as a humble one-day event in 1920, has grown into an 11 day celebration with countless events. The Apple Blossom Festival is the second oldest festival in the state of Washington and of course our favorite. Our festival highlights our area’s unmatched natural beauty, family centered values, fruit industry and generous community. Over 100,000 spectators will line the streets for the Grand Parade on May 5th. For three days over 140 vendors will sell their handcrafted goods at the Arts and Crafts Fair and more than 20 food vendors will be set up in Memorial Park for all 11 days. No matter your age or interests there will be something for you whether it be the golf tournament, the carnival, live music in the park, or the fun run. We hope you embrace everything Apple Blossom has to offer and join us at this year’s festival. “How Do You Like Them Apples”.

First Lady Jody and I are honored to represent the Wenatchee Applarians and welcome you to the 2018 Washington State Apple Blossom Festival. The Wenatchee Applarians are the official hosting organization for the cities of Wenatchee and East Wenatchee. Our members host the Apple Blossom Festival hospitality weekend and escort the visiting floats through our parade route. Each year the Applarians provide an educational scholarship for our Apple Applarian Chancellor Blossom Queen and act as ambassadors Bryan Campbell & traveling to other festivals throughout his wife Jody Washington, Oregon and Canada to accompany our Royalty and their float in these magnificent parades and cities. Under the direction of our 1st Vice Chancellor Robin Huffaker and husband Keith, we have planned a fun-filled weekend of hospitality for our Northwest Festival friends. We hope that you thoroughly enjoy our “How Do You Like Them Apples” themed festivities taking place throughout our community.

Director General Andy Kottkamp

The Wenatchee Valley and surrounding areas are known for growing the highest quality fruits, vegetables and grains that help feed our nation and the world. But it is our apples for which we are most famous. And what a wonderful variety of apples we grow! Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Honey Crisp, Fuji, can you name a few? And the beautiful apple blossoms that arrive each May, carpeting our valley with the most beautiful flowers, giving promise to the apples that will soon fill the stores around the globe. The Director General, Washington State Apple Blossom Festival, Andy Kottkamp & one of the premier events of the Pacific his wife Tam Northwest, is made possible by thousands of generous sponsors and volunteers, who, for the past 99 years, have committed themselves to helping our valley celebrate our heritage, and our future. Please join me along with our Board of Directors, the Wenatchee Applarians, sponsors, volunteers and staff as we welcome our guests to join our celebration as we look at our valley in full bloom, smile and say "How Do You Like THEM Apples!"

Saturday, May 5 • 11:00 am GRAND MARSHALS — Clyde came from humble beginnings as a migrant worker from Izzard County, Arkansas. Ruth was born and raised in Wenatchee. At age 18, Clyde married Ruth. By the age of 20, he was climbing from bag boy to General Manager at Wenatchee’s Peter Rabbit grocery store chain and Ruth was working at Sears. On August 1st, 1967, Clyde and Ruth founded Ballard Ambulance. They grew the business to include many divisions that served the citizens of North Central Washington, such as one of the state’s largest medical supply stores and the first licensed air ambulance service in the state. Clyde was a dominant force in the Washington Clyde & Ruth Ballard State Legislature for 20 years. In 1994, he was elected Speaker of the House. As our 12th District State Representative Clyde became the longestserving caucus leader in the Legislature’s history, 16 years, some in the minority, four years as Speaker, and three years as Co-Speaker. Clyde retired in 2002. Ruth has been Clyde’s long-term partner in business, marriage and politics. Over the years, they have been a host to hundreds of church youth group meetings and countless members of the community. In one year alone, Ruth provided 3,500 meals to employees and visitors. Clyde previously served as Douglas County Fire Commissioner and East Wenatchee Water District Commissioner. Ruth is a former Salvation Army Board member. Clyde and Ruth recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. They have 3 sons, 2 foster daughters & 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grand children. The

Royalty & Chaperones would like to thank Sangster Motors for donating this year’s Royal Coach: A 2018 Denali Acadia. This beautiful vehicle was presented to the Royalty at the Selection Pageant in February, and transports them in comfort and style to over 180 appearances during their reign. The Festival invites everyone to stop by and visit the staff at Sangster Motors.

Royalty pictured with Corey Sangster, General Sales Manager.

Upon his return from WWII, Ken Duffin attended the Art Center College of Design, and became a professional artist. For many years he was a freelance artist with a studio in San Francisco focused on advertising accounts. Later Ken moved to Seattle and became a Boeing artist where he painted airplanes in flight as well as promotional illustrations. After leaving Boeing, he resumed his freelance work in the Seattle area specializing in architectural illustration. Now living in Eastern Washington, Ken paints what he loves, nature. 40 years of the outdoors with sunlight and shadows, fog and rain, trees, fields, lakes and rivers. Trips to the mountains and beaches and other trips state-side and abroad provide him with an abundant supply of material for his paintings. Ken is a life member and past president of the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Painters. He was a founding member of the "San Francisco Society of Illustrators", a member of "Oil Painters of America" and a signature member of the "Northwest Watercolor Society". Ken is also a contributing member of the US Air Force Documentary Art Program to which his

paintings have been donated documenting his experiences while visiting Air Force Bases around the world. His paintings have been selected in competitions for posters to represent the Washington cities of Redmond, Chelan and the 75th Anniversary of the Ellensburg Rodeo. Ken’s paintings have been in the top 100 in the “National Arts for the Parks” in addition to winning awards in shows throughout Washington including: Bellevue, in Ocean Shores, Anacortes, Edmonds, La Conner, Chelan, Gig Harbor and throughout the Puget Sound. Duffin's paintings hang in numerous homes and offices throughout the country. Purchase your print online at appleblossom.org, $32 or at the Festival Office

Janice and Chuck made Wenatchee their home in 1981. Janice worked for Bluebird and Growers Credit as a Controller and in 1997 began her 21 year career with CIMCO also as a Controller. In 1988 Janice joined the Wenatchee Central Lions Club, right after Lions International invited women to join this all-mens organization. Janice is very passionate about volunteering for Wenatchee Central Lions Club. She has served as Vice President 5 times and each time oversaw 25 committees. She spearheaded Carnival and AppleSox ticket sales which are huge fundraisers for Wenatchee Central Lions Club. In 1998 she was chosen as a Melvin Jones Fellow, which is the highest honor a Lion can receive. In 1992 Janice started her journey with the Apple Blossom Festival. She was a board member for 4 years and has been a part of Pageant for over 25 years and has directed Pageant 4 times. Janice is our go to person! Her and Chuck have escorted the Float to out of town Festival, passed out awards at the Grand Parade and much more. When it comes to Pageant Janice knows anything and everything about it! Janice loves her Lions Club and Apple Blossom Festival families and when she isn’t working or spending time with her husband and her wonderful friends, or waterskiing on Lake Chelan or the Columbia River, she is volunteering for these two organizations. Todd Fryhover is a native of Wenatchee, Washington, and spent summers working in the apple and cherry industry. After graduating from Wenatchee High School in 1980, he attended the University of Idaho graduating with a degree in Agricultural Economics and Business while playing football on scholarship. Upon returning after college, Mike Scott gave him an opportunity at Chief Wenatchee and his career flourished. Todd has worked for several leading apple packing companies over the past 30 years, 10 of those years were spent as President of his own marketing business with two other partners. He has had management experience in quality assurance, purchasing, inventory control, shipping, operations, domestic sales and ultimately focusing on direct international sales for 15+ years. Todd came to the Washington Apple Commission in 2007 in a consultancy role, and assumed the presidency in December 2008. During his tenure at the helm, Washington apple exports have increased from 35,350,843 (2008-09) to 50,592,725 (2014-15) cartons with an increase in value from $517,889,850 to $831,744,399 (+60.6%). As barriers to trade became more significant, and industry’s need to export increased as new production came on line, maintaining and expanding Market Access has been his focus. Todd played a key role in expanding varietal access to China, which has proven to be one of Washington’s top five export destinations. Todd has been involved with the U.S. Apple Association, Northwest Horticultural Council and the Northwest Fruit Exporters as a board member and ex-officio. He is currently the president of the World Apple & Pear Association. Todd has been married for 30 years to his Junior High Sweetheart. Todd’s pride and joy are his children Reid and Claire. He has been involved with coaching their teams in multiple sports most of their childhood, which lead to his 2010-11 Wenatchee High School Parent of the Year Award. And in 2014 Todd was voted into the WHS Panther Hall of Fame. He is very committed to his family and gives a lot of credit to his father for inspiring him to be a hard worker and never give up! The Staff and Students of the Eastmont Schools owe a tremendous debt to those who work tirelessly to keep the pride alive in our schools. We can never thank you enough for encouraging our Legislators to fully fund Education so every student in the Eastmont schools has the same opportunity to be successful. Without all the help you provide to our schools, and our community, Eastmont students would have fewer opportunities for meaningful learning experiences. In gratitude we would like to especially recognize • Our Voters who consistently support our students and approve both bonds and levies • Everyone who contacts our Representatives in Olympia and reminds them to support the education of our children • The many Building PTOs, Booster, Pride and Red Zone groups who find ways to build support for both student and staff needs. • Our Community Volunteers who work so hard in and around our schools. • Every Business and every individual who helps make Carnivals, Fun Nights, Picture Days, Book Fairs, Dances, Field Trips and many activities available for our students. For all the time and support you give to Eastmont students and staff, the teachers of the Eastmont Education Association want to say
