What got you into Real Estate and what keeps you here?

John L. Scott Real Estate When I was buying my first home in my mid 20s it created some interest at that time but I had a job I enjoyed, was a 509-860-2700

single mom, and I just bought a home—not a good time to change careers. When I got married we sold my home and bought a new one, then had my second child, Mitchell. Going back to work after six weeks of maternity leave—my job just wasn’t the same for me. I came home one day and said, “I quit my job,” and started making plans to start my own daycare, which I did for three years. My goal was to do that for two years and then figure out something else to do. During that time I began thinking, “What do I really want to do for my next career?” Real Estate came back to mind: A flexible schedule (with two kids that was important to me), plus I felt I could do a great job and make a good living at it. The first year (1993) I worked Real Estate ‘part-time’ and the reason I say that is I still was running my own daycare but had hired help. I opened at 7:30 am and my helper covered from 9:00-3:00 while I worked Real Estate. I would come back by 3:00 and close by 5:30 and then go show property if needed. I worked weekends too! I closed the daycare in 1994 and went ‘full time’ in my Real Estate career. I was honored with the first “Rookie of the Year” award in 1993.

Real Estate as a Longer Term Investment Our favorite blog, The KCM Blog, posted a graphic from MSNMoney.com on Returns on Investment (ROI) illustrating a comparison of returns on the DOW, S&P, NASDAQ and real estate since 2000. We feel it says quite a bit. In the Wenatchee Valley the average selling price in 2000 was $156,000 and as of Oct 31st of 2011 the average selling price is $253,500. Now is a great time to buy as there is a wide variety of homes and prices and interest rates are low. Contact a Realtor® to find out more about your perfect fit.

About your family? I have one daughter, Josslyn, who graduated from CWU and lives in Spokane. She is a Director/Producer for KHQ television. My son Mitchell graduated from the Colorado School of Trades as a Gunsmith and is working at High Mountain Hunting here in Wenatchee. We have two dogs: Bob who is a huge Yellow Lab, and Snickers who is a Laso apso, otherwise known as big and little.

What tip would you offer to a buyer or seller? Don’t listen to all the negative media out there. Real Estate is local!! Study and learn your/our local market. Don’t let National statistics scare you. Do your own study and find a Realtor that can help you learn the market and make a good decision in your real estate investments. I always tell my first time home buyers, “Your first real estate investment is the most important one.” I love helping them do that.

Why is the Wenatchee Valley a great place to live? That’s easy to answer. Minutes to the rivers, lakes and streams. Lots of biking and walking trails. Skiing out our backdoors whether is water or downhill. Mountains to snowmobile or cross country in. Hunting and fishing of all types. Great medical services. No crazy traffic problems. Only a couple hours drive if you need the city fix. Oh, and of course all the great people that live here, plus the four beautiful seasons we get to enjoy. I love living here!

What do you do for fun and relaxation? Lately I have been doing a lot of fishing. My boyfriend Mike, who was a fishing guide in Alaska for several years, has taught me the art of patience to fishing and the glory of catching the big ones!! My first time out I caught a 38” King Salmon (beginners luck he says) and a 48” my second year. That one was so big it was scary! It was almost as long as I am tall. Enjoying the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets on the Columbia River while fishing brings me a sense of peace and reminds me of all the great things living in the Wenatchee Valley has to offer.
