By Bridget Dowd For Lake Chelan This Week
A
s children play in the park, locals chat with friends downtown, weekend visitors wander from shop to shop, and vacationers enjoy the simple pleasures of warm weather at the lake, Chelan and Manson businesses gear up for an event-filled summer. “Every weekend during the summer we have something going on,” former museum president Dick Simonds said. One of the Chelan’s highly trafficked hotels is Campbell’s Resort, where live music is played every Friday night throughout the summer months, in the upstairs restaurant. “We get loads and loads of people just having a good time, enjoying great food and getting great service,” restaurant supervisor Devon Gray said. “It’s very family oriented and a lot of fun.” With so many events packed into such a small time frame, like the grueling bike rides held this weekend, the many winery events, the farmers markets held every week, and so many others, it’s no wonder the town is such a popular spot for vacationers.
509-393-3253 Chelan, WA chelanshine@gmail.com
“The Lake Chelan Valley is stunning year-round, providing the opportunity for tourists to create traditions in any season,” said Lacey Lybecker, marketing manager for Chelan’s chamber of commerce. “Summer is a popular season with so many opportunities to get out on the lake and play.” Leavenworth resident Tamsen Smith usually takes her kids to Lake Wenatchee, but said that Lakeside Park in Chelan is a much more pleasant alternative. “We’re going to come here more often this summer,” Tamsen said. “It’s a little bit further of a drive, but there are no mosquitoes and it’s not hugely crowded.” As a growing wine region, Chelan receives many visitors who come for tastings and to plan their special events, such as weddings. Susan Massey, the Wine Club Manager at a Karma Vineyards, lives in Wenatchee, but can’t get enough of working in Chelan. Karma hosts quite a few weddings in the summer and is usually at its busiest in June and July.
INSIDE STORY “I get a lot of variety in my job and I get to work outside all summer long,” Massey said. “For such a short drive you feel like you’re really getting away. It’s amazing how completely different the weather can be [from Wenatchee].” Riverwalk Books in downtown Chelan will be putting on its annual “Where’s Waldo” event in Chelan, which starts July 1. Over 30 Chelan businesses participate in this event where visitors can find Waldo stickers throughout the town for a chance to win prizes at the bookstore. “I enjoy the variety of folks that come through here,” owner Libby Manthey said. “They’re not just tourists, they are
people who are vested in this community.” The Vogue coffee and wine bar is a popular place to take a break from shopping or site seeing and enjoy a beverage. “The shifts are fun, it gets hoppin’,” barista Kayla Good said. “There’s usually a line out the door for hours on end.” Good has been a resident of Chelan for two years and explained that her love for the job and the town stems from the people who make it a fun place to be. “The lake is a part of Chelan’s appeal, but a bigger part is the locals that keep the place running with their amazing energy and heart,” Good said.

Chelan’s next-door neighbor Manson also has a number of hot spots and events for people to check out during the summer. One of its most popular is the summer concert series, which runs every Sunday through mid-September. For an untraditional dining experience, Fromaggio Artisan Creamery and Bistro in Manson will host a pig roast every Tuesday night beginning June 24. “We’ll have a full pig, sauces from around the world, and sides from around the world,” owner Timi Starkweather said. “It’s a blast in our shop, we’re always doing cheese tastings, dogs are allowed on leashes on our patio, and it’s very family friendly.” Manson is also the home to the Pacific Northwest’s only outdoor concert venue featuring covered seating--the Deep Water Amphitheater at Mill Bay Casino. Their summer concert series will feature Blood, Sweat & Tears, Melissa Etheridge, Rick Springfield, George Thorogood and others. So whether you’re coming to the Chelan and Manson area to enjoy the lake, the shopping, the amazing wineries or the many entertainment and
sporting events, there’s no shortage of things to do and places to discover in this region. You’ll find all the information you need in Lake Chelan This Week, published every Friday through October 10. If you want to venture away from the south end of Lake Chelan, take a trip to Stehekin, a small village near the headwaters of Lake Chelan. The only way to get there is by foot, boat or plane! Not to worry, you don’t have to hike in your flip flops, The Lady of the Lake ferries folks roundtrip daily and Chelan Seaplanes takes to the air, providing a lake view you won’t forget. Once there rent bikes, take a bus tour to Rainbow Falls, hike or just relax. Overnight accommodations are available if you want to enjoy all the scenic and recreational opportunities that just can’t be squeezed into a single day. See our story on page 15 for additional information on Stehekin.

WINE
Friday, June 20, 2014
Our vintages are deep and complex, like the cobalt depths outside our wineries’ steps. The glacially carved soil gives our grapes unique character. Our lake’s depths literally change the seasons here, stretching them out, drawing out late-s ummer sugars long after others are off the vine. Some say our most precious resources are the world-class winemakers drawn to these conditions, turning nature’s gifts into the magic in your glass. Engaging and accessible, chances are you’ll talk to more than one on your next wine adventure here.
a LAKECHELANWINEVALLEY.COM
And yes, a wine trip to Lake Chelan is an adventure for all your senses. One taste and we know you’ll agree: Lake Chelan Wine Valley is naturally intoxicating. Less than three hours from Seattle, it’s one of the few wine destinations where the views equal the vintages. Love the outdoors? Hiking, biking, boating all await. Thirsting for culture? Thrill to our arts & music scene, bursting with boutiques, concerts, culinary flights of fancy and more. Lodging options abound: resorts, B&B’s, vacation home rentals, all a click away. Let wineries know if six or more plan to taste… for a full listing of wineries, please visit:

Hike of the week:
Books for Young Readers
Chelan Lakeshore Trail By Holly Thorpe For Lake Chelan This Week Chelan is best known not for its burgers, vineyards, or even its i reworks, but the lake and the wilderness surrounding it. What better way to enjoy the sunshine and scenery than a brisk hike through it. This week’s featured hike offers hikers beautiful scenery, multiple hiking options and convenient campgrounds for those who want to stay a while.
Photos by Rick Gavin
The Chelan Lakeshore Trail was in hikeable condition as of June 18, according to the Chelan Ranger Station. Directions: You’ll be starting your adventure at 1418 W. Woodin Ave in Chelan where you can park your car and hop on board the Lady of the Lake II at 8:30 a.m. One-way fares range from $22.50–$24 depending on where you disembark. From here you have a couple of options depending on how ambitious you’re feeling that morning: Starting at Prince Creek: The Lady of the Lake II can drop you off at Prince Creek at around 11 a.m. From Prince Creek you may hike 7 miles (14 miles round-trip) to Meadow Creek which offers a campground.

10 miles from Prince Creek lies the Moore Point campground complete with a semienclosed shelter and restrooms. The Lady of the Lake stops here once on its way North to Stehekin at 12:15 p.m. and once as it returns to Chelan at 2:15 p.m., giving tired hikers a way to get home. For the especially energetic (or those who rested overnight at one of the campgrounds) you can continue on for about 6.5 more miles to Stehekin where the Lady of the Lake II will be everyday from noon until 2:30 p.m. to give hikers a well-deserved ride back to their cars in Chelan.
Contact: It’s always advisable to check trail conditions and boat schedules before planning a hike. For trail conditions contact The Chelan Ranger Station at (509) 682-4900. For Lady of the Lake II fares and seasonal schedules visit ladyofthelake.com or call (509) 682-4584.

What’s At The End of the Lake? STEHEKIN!
W
here time stands still. Take the slow boat if you plan to stay awhile. At a leisurely 15 mph, the Lady of the Lake II will take you the 55-mile length of Lake Chelan in about four hours. There are faster ways to make the trip from Chelan. The Lake Chelan Boat Co. offers the Lady Express that cuts the travel time in half. Chelan Seaplanes offers daily flights. But there are no roads to this remote valley.
In Stehekin, you’ll find lodging, food, bike rentals, a National Park Service visitor center and tours — check out stehekinvalley.com for details — or you camp or launch into a backcountry hiking adventure.
