economy. There was only one catch: Chelan’s weather in January was always a surprise. Some months there would be bitter cold and snow, other months the temperature would rest at a balmy 40 degrees all weekend. Thus, Winterfest’s most unique events were born: art and activities that were stunning and enjoyable come sun or snow. For $7 pre-purchase, visitors will purchase and pin their snowflake-adorned buttons to their coats, gaining admission to the variety of events. The sculptures could be an event in and of themselves. With furniture, displays, art and even a bar being carved, chipped, and blow-torched over the course of two weeks. Professionals from Seattle will stay in Chelan and mold the 20 tons of ice purchased from an ice house in Wenatchee. Even if the sculptures drip, “it’s still fun to see the ice come alive,” said Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mike Steele. However, it’s not only the ice half of Winterfest putting on a show. “One of the things that is really one of our biggest wow-factor would be the addition of the wish lanterns last year,” Steele said. “A thousand lanterns went up. People were clamoring for it the second weekend.”
Immediately following the lighting, the flaming tower — a chimney carved intricately of ice — is ignited. “It is incredible to watch the fire encapsulated in the ice,” Steele said. “The flames shooting out the top.” On both weekends, a variety of outdoors fun — made even more enjoyable by the stunning lakeside scenery — is available. For those who would prefer to maximize the amount of time they spend in places with heating and good food, there are options. Between Alefest, the Taste of Manson restaurant walk, or the ever-popular Wine Walk (extended by another day and with 1500 tickets available this week) guests will not be left hungry or in the cold. Local breweries and distilleries combined with the diverse culinary flavor of the valley equate to a cozy weekend of only the finest dining. Despite the weather and despite visitors’ tastes, Winterfest’s unique smorgasbord of flavors, sights, sounds, and experiences just might become someone’s next holiday tradition. “We’re always excited to host and welcome people to Lake Chelan,” Steele said. “It’s a beautiful time.” Use hashtag #LCWinterfest on Twitter

FIRE ACTIVITIES
Fire Events By Holly Thorpe For Lake Chelan This Week
W
hen the thermostat reads in the single digits and the roads start to get icy, few things sound better than curling up next to the gentle glow of a roaring ire. It’s no surprise then, that that’s half of Winterfest’s theme. But they do it just a little bit differently. From the quiet magic of the wish lanterns to the ominous and stunning “laming tower,” the lames and sparks of Winterfest are certainly just as important as the ice. Here are some of the hottest events at Winterfest:
Wish Lanterns “A wish lantern is a biodegradable lantern — think of it as a small hot air balloon,” said Erin McCardle,Winterfest event director. People of all ages purchase one of the paper-tissue lanterns and write their wish on it. Once their wish is made, the lantern
is lit, and the heat causes the lantern to rise into the cold winter air. Some 200 people will send their holiday hopes skyward “The sky is illed with hundreds of these glowing lanterns,” McCardle said. “It was amazing [last year,] watching the kids and their reactions.” Anyone in attendance is invited to partake the irst weekend, at 6 p.m. on Jan. 11.
works don’t get put away again after the Fourth of July. Winterfest attendees can gather ‘round Don Morris Park to see the night sky illuminated by an overhead irework show. Launched from the beaches, the show is not one to miss. “The kids just love it,” McCardle said.
Just before the ireworks are set off, the beach bonire will be lit, giving everyone a chance to warm up before the evening’s grand inale. Anyone at Winterfest can attend the show (and warm up by the ire), happening at 8 p.m. on Jan. 18.
Tower of Fire The name is a little misleading — this feature of Winterfest is less a tower and more a chimney. A chimney carved out of 3,000 pounds of solid ice, that is. Following the lighting and ascension of the wish lanterns, the ice tower will have it’s center illed with wood, and ignited. The result is a stunning display of irelight through the crystalline sheen of ice. Don’t want to miss it? That’s no surprise. You can catch the spectacle on the irst weekend of Winterfest, at 7 p.m. on Jan. 11.
Fireworks Unlike other places, Lake Chelan’s ire-

ICE ACTIVITIES

Winterfest Issue 2014
Ice Activities By Holly Thorpe For Lake Chelan This Week
F
or a town so associated with sun burns, beach towels, and shorts, it’s hard to imagine it laden with snow. Yet, with icicles clinging to sills, and patterns of frost on windowpanes, Chelan comes alive with a variety of wintry activities for all ages. Here are some of the coolest (pun deinitely intended) activities going on this Winterfest:
Ice Sculptures This winter, the Lake Chelan valley will become the home of a variety of totally unique ice sculptures. Twelve of the sculptures will be inspired by the designs of one student from each grade in the area, and will be shipped in from a Seattle ice-carving company called Creative Ice. Anyone who visits all 12 pieces is eligible to enter a drawing for a Lake Chelan getaway. In addition to the artwork, there will be
plenty of interactive sculptures as well. The ice slide, which stretches about 20 feet long and was carved out of 12,000 pounds of ice, has become a huge hit with anyone willing to brave a cold bottom. The ice bar (which is designed differently every year) will be mixing up some drinks (presumably on the rocks) and people are welcomed to pose for a photo on the ice throne, reintroduced this year and carved out of some 4,000 pounds of ice.
