hat can that little square button do? You’d be surprised.

Every year, the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce offers the Winterfest Button as a magic ticket to the winter wonderland they create. The button will grant you hassle-free access to activities like the Ice Bar and rides in a horse-drawn carriage. Plus, save some dough at one of the dozens of shops offering discounts on food, clothes, toys and other goods to button-holders (see the full list on page 13). Tickets for some of the events at Winterfest, like the Wine Walks on Jan. 15 & 16 and the Winterfest Alefest on Jan. 22 & 23, include a Winterfest Button in the cost.

Button or no button, you’ll have no trouble keeping busy both weekends. Between a lineup of local tunes, a wide assortment of wine and beer to keep spirits high and visual spectacles like the ice sculptures and firework show, there’s plenty to see and do. Many of the attractions are free, but the Winterfest button grants you access to those that aren’t — and it supports the community! Profits leftover from Winterfest Buttons will go to support local programs.

Whether this your first ‘fest or you’ve been celebrating the snow and ice with the Lake Chelan Chamber since the 1980s, you’ll be missing out if you don’t bundle up and join them for this wintry small-town celebration.

Join Us for the Wonder of Lake Chelan Winterfest 2016 Enjoy a variety of wintry activities in the Lake Chelan Valley January 15-24 What’s different about spending January in Chelan? The ice. And not just any ice — ice that has been brought to life. Ice carved into a tower and set ablaze after the sun goes down. Ice molded into a bar or a 12,000 pound ice-slide.

Some 45,000 pounds of ice crafted into art before your eyes. Ice that sets the scene for a 10-day celebration filled with food, live music, and fun for visitors of all ages.

Hosted by the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce and presented by the Historic Downtown Chelan Association, Winterfest is a two weekend festival of wintry fun. The event kicks off Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in downtown Chelan, with downtown Manson as the main locale for the finale weekend.

Winterfest Activities in Chelan JANUARY 15-17

Horse Carriage Rides

Show your Winterfest Button and hop on the beautiful horse drawn sleigh for a ride along the river. Giddy up on Friday, Jan. 15 from 3 to 7 p.m., and on Saturday, Jan. 16 from noon to 6 p.m.

Snowflake Lane & Ice Slide Mom and dad have Alefest and the Wine Walk, but what about the kiddos? Try Snowflake Lane — a crafty, cozy retreat in Campbell’s Resort presented by the Historic Downtown Chelan Association. Make a special superhero or superheroine cape or get your faces painted. It’s a creative and engaging place to warm up. You can also find some fun outside. Show your Winterfest Button, grab a sled and take a ride on the slide made from 12,000 pounds of ice.

Ice Bar The drinks are ice cold — so why not have the bar ice cold, too? The Ice Bar, presented by the Historic Downtown Chelan Association, will be serving wines from the Lake Chelan Wine Valley, ciders and craft beers.

Plus, there will be live music on tap Friday and Saturday, the full music schedule is on page 5.

Ice Block Carvings Part of the magic of Winterfest is watching the artistic work of several incredible ice sculptors.

Watch as they turn 12,000 pounds of ice into beautiful pieces of art. You can catch the ice carvers at work at these times throughout the weekend: Friday, Jan. 15: 6-10 p.m. in Historic Downtown Chelan Saturday, Jan. 16: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2-6 p.m. in Historic Downtown Chelan

Klapadoowopella KlapaDooWopella specializes in traditional Croatian “Klapa” singing. Klapa singers are a cappella minstrels that hang out on boat docks and street

corners along the Adriatic coast of Croatia. The passionate harmonic blend of traditional Klapa songs evokes uncaught fish, raging seas, and lost love. Despite forays into other genres, the quartet always returns to its first love, the moan of the sea that is the primal chord of the Klapa song. Enjoy the strolling a cappella group throughout downtown Chelan on Friday, Jan. 15 from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m

Soupfest Taste the soups of the Valley during Soupfest on Friday, Jan. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m.! Warm, yummy, and local, try soups at The Eagles in downtown Chelan and vote on your three favorites to help choose the Winterfest Soupfest Champion. A great opportunity to get a little taste of a handful of the local restaurants that feed Chelan. Entrance is free with your Winterfest Button

The Grand Procession All brave Polar Bear Splashers, friendly canines, and folks looking for a fun walk are invited to be a part of the very grand Grand Procession to Don Morse Park. The procession will begin at the Columbia and Johnson intersection (near Safeway) and will be led by the Seahawks Blue Thunder Drumline. The walk is short (.3 miles), but dress warm! The walk ends at Don Morse Park where folks will gather to cheer on the Polar Bear Splashers and watch the fireworks show. The walk begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16.

Polar Bear Splash/ Fireworks Not for the faint at heart, grab your towel and head down to Don Morse Park at 6:45 p.m., Jan. 16 for the annual Winterfest Polar Bear Splash. Be warned: the water will be COLD. Afterwards, you can warm up next to the annual beach bonfire. From the fire, you’ll be able to see the spectacular fireworks show from Don Morse Park beginning at approximately 7 p.m.

SMIRK Comedy

Show When a former scientist and a Ringling clown put together a show, you get SMIRK! Since 2008, they have received acclaim as a bold mix of modern day theater and juggling, as well as a throwback to the golden age of comedy. With multiple awards for performing and juggling, SMIRK embodies the best that family entertainment has to offer; a visual display of human skill and precision that will amaze, and timeless humor that delights all ages. Show is Sat. Jan. 23 from 2 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the North Shore Bible Church.

Seahawks Blue Thunder Grand Procession Destined to become a signature event of Lake Chelan Winterfest; we are inviting all of our Polar Bear Splashers, all our friendly canines, and folks looking for a fun walk! Bloody Mary Battle The Battle of the Bloody Mary takes place at the Manson Grange on Sunday, Jan. 24 from 11am-1pm. Sip through some of the best Bloody Mary’s in the Lake Chelan Valley and vote for your favorite! Fried chicken and waffle bites from Gunther’s Fish and Chips round out the perfect “hair of the dog” morning. Winterfest Activities in Manson JANUARY 22-24 Taste of Manson Manson, the Village by the Bay, is a small, quaint community about seven miles up lake from downtown Chelan. We’ve gathered up eight of our best restaurants from around the Lake and they will be serving up small bites from their menu. Open to the first 100 guests with a Winterfest Button.

A team of ice carvers will be crafting the Winterfest staple all day long in Manson Bay Marina: the Ice Tower. You can watch them work throughout the day, and return at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23 to see it set on fire, in a light display you won’t find anywhere else.

Wish Lanterns

Another beautiful evening at Winterfest lighting wish lanterns by the lake at 6 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 23. The setting is purely magical.

SMIRK Comedy Show

Join The Numerica Performing Arts Center for a funny, family-friendly show that’s been garnering laughs since 2009. On Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016 from 2-3 p.m., The “SMIRK Show” will hit the stage at the North Shore Bible Church. According to lakechelan.com: “With multiple awards for performing and juggling, SMIRK embodies the best that family entertainment has to offer; a visual display of human skill and precision that will amaze, and timeless humor that delights all ages.”

Snowshoe Walk/Run
