Hello Summer! Lake Chelan gears up for vacation season

By Bryce Newberry and Emily Cieslak For Lake Chelan This Week

Summer is for making waves in the Lake Chelan Valley — that from the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce — during the busiest season for Chelan Valley businesses. It’s a slow ramp-up for businesses, which “coast” into the summer season, said Lacey Lybecker, marketing director for the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce.

Longer hours mean a lot of staffing increases, Lybecker said. Many businesses usually hold more events during the summer, as well, she said.

So, how are businesses preparing for the busiest season of the year? “Everyone is responding by being open any day that someone’s going to be in town,” Lybecker said.

To find out about those events, Lybecker said to go to the “hub” for all things Lake Chelan, at none other than LakeChelan.com. That’s where the chamber keeps an up-to-date description of restaurants and all upcoming events for the valley. And of course, your go-to source for the region, Lake Chelan This Week.

Many businesses have gone to seven days a week and extended hours to accommodate the influx of tourists. “We are making sure we are staying on top of business; everything is in stock and all the orders are done,” Madison Parmenter, employee of Black Dog Frame Shop, said. “We have a lot of regular customers, because we are a frame shop, but we also get an influx of tourists. We like having a balance of locals and tourists.”

Riverwalk Books in downtown Chelan will be putting on its annual “Where’s Waldo” event in Chelan, which starts July 1. Twenty-five Chelan businesses participate in this event where visitors can find Waldo stickers throughout the town for a chance to win prizes at the bookstore. Some changes to the Lake Chelan business world this summer include the brand new visitor center, located at 216 E. Woodin Avenue, which is filled with pictures, information, and graphics that showcase the valley, Lybecker said.

INSIDE STORY

Lake Chelan This Week

Friday, June 19, 2015

From Page 2 “It’s a pretty neat space so I definitely recommend visitors come and check it out while they’re here,” she said. The new space also features interactive touch screens, a kids’ corner and historical maps of Lake Chelan. “We are the hub for all of the businesses in the valley and it’s really our job to big picture attract people to our valley,” Lybecker said. In the summer, the big attraction is obviously Lake Chelan, Lybecker said. She recommends getting on the lake in any way possible, whether it be the Lady of the Lake, jetskis, paddleboarding, or kayaking. The lake water is warming up early this season, Lybecker said, so “make sure to get on it.” Chelan’s next-door neighbor Manson also has a number of hot spots and events for people to check out during the summer. Back for its second year, the Manson Summer Nights Concert Series will continue to provide live outdoor music every Sunday night through September with a few new additions. Chairman Kim Ustanik said the venue will feature the new Stormy Mountain Lounge, which will sell local beer and wine. The first night opens this Sunday with blues band, the Stacy Jones Band. “We are starting this year with our beloved local bands and then transitioning to national, touring bands,” Ustanik said. “It’s an amazing outdoor venue with all the mountains as a beautiful backdrop. It’s a great reason to stay another day on vacation.” Manson is also the home to the Pacific Northwest’s only outdoor concert venue featuring covered seating — the Deep Water Amphitheater at Mill Bay Casino. The summer concert series will feature MC Hammer, Martina McBride, Michael McDonald, Beatles vs Stones, and SNL Vets: Rob Schneider, Jon Lovitz and Tim Meadows. Coming to town but not sure where to stay? Or worse, can’t find availability? Lybecker recommends calling the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce or stopping by the visitor’s center for a one-stop check at lodging availability in the area. The chamber works with lodging partners and can provide lodging availability information, as well as rate ranges for different places to stay.

Join us for a Summer Solstice Celebration! Saturday, June 20, 2015 11:30am – 4:00pm Lake Chelan Sports Come get a hot dog and ice cream and help us celebrate our 30th Anniversary!

If you want to venture away from the south end of Lake Chelan, take a trip to Stehekin, a small village at the headwaters of Lake Chelan. The only way to get there is by foot, boat or plane! Not to worry, you don’t have to hike in your flip flops, because the Lady of the Lake ferries people round trip daily, and Chelan Seaplanes takes to the air, providing a lake view you won’t forget. Once there, rent bikes, take a bus tour to Rainbow Falls, hike or just relax. Overnight accommodations are available if you want to enjoy all the scenic and recreational opportunities that just can’t be squeezed into a single day. Visit stehekin.com for lodging information. So whether you’re coming to the Chelan and Manson area to enjoy the lake, the shopping, the amazing wineries or the many entertainment and sporting events, there’s no shortage of things to do and places to discover in this region. The Historic Downtown Chelan Association (HDCA) sat down with owners Pat and Gene Kelly to get to know a little more about Kelly’s (as the locals call it). Pat began to share the store’s rich history, “The business was established in 1925. My dad, Wayne Kelly, bought the business from Jim Reed in 1958, after working for Jim several years, partnered with Uncle Gene and it became known as Kelly’s Ace Hardware.” When asked about his business philosophy, Gene said: “First off, you have to hire quality, good employees that care. That try their best day every day to give quality customer service and the best one-on-one experience. That person-to-person relationship is what keeps people coming back. We have just that staff—they are wonderful!” Pat agreed and felt that the true reward about being a business owner was, “…helpin’ people! You just can’t beat that feeling of helping someone find what they need, offer advice on a project they’re working on or just connect them to the right resources. Knowing you have helped someone is better than anything.” Apart from their business history and philosophy, there is something very unique about Kelly’s Ace Hardware that many locals love. If you look at their logo, you will find quite the Irish touch. “Why the Irish touch?...well, it’s simple—our whole family is Irish,” Gene laughed. If you are Irish yourself, you will find yourself a unique and specific parking spot free for two hours right outside their store! Whatever task you have at hand, come meet Pat, Gene and the entire Kelly’s Ace Hardware crew downtown Chelan—they are always ready to help you with a big smile! Also, if you need a good story, be sure to ask Pat or Gene to tell you all about the history of their bank safe office door!

summer highlights The 2015 summer season is quickly filling with events unique to the area and boasting local flavor.

updates about this event at www.facebook.com/pages/ Lake-Chelan-Rodeo/190570474400112

In just a few weeks, on Friday, July 3rd, be here for the annual Chelan Rockin’ Fireworks Show presented by the Historic Downtown Chelan Association. Come down to the lake at 10pm and watch the fireworks light up the sky over the lake. Suggested places to enjoy the show are at Don Morse Park and Lakeside Park.

In August it’s the 3-day Lake Chelan Fine Arts Festival. Now in its 6th year, this event takes place in Riverwalk Park located in downtown Chelan. Along with fine arts, crafts and music there’s a children’s area full of fun and adventure. One popular event is the silent auction where patrons will have the opportunity to bid on donated pieces of art from some of the top artists in the Chelan community. The event is sponsored by the Lake Chelan Arts Council and the proceeds go to support the local art community including the murals, sculptures and scholarships. More information can be found on their website at lakechelanartscouncil.com

Can’t get enough fireworks? On Saturday, the Fourth of July, it’s the 36th annual 4th of July Fireworks—the Big Show in Manson. Enjoy the fireworks over Manson Bay Marina along with live music, beginning at 10:15 sharp, presented by the Manson Business Association. In mid-July, it’s the 34th season of the Lake Chelan Bach Fest, held July 10 through July 18. That’s nine great days of music ranging from classical to jazz to show tunes, chamber music to full orchestra and chorus. Complete information about all events can be found on their website at bachfest. org. If you’re looking for something more active, July 18 &19 brings Chelan Man to the region, a multi-sport weekend of triathlons and running events. From swimming in Lake Chelan, biking along the lake and the Columbia River, and running on paved paths and roads, the event includes a triathlon, 10K and half-marathon runs, half iron marathons and other fitness competitions. Find all the details at chelanman.com. OK, how about something a little less active than hours of running, swimming and biking? The end of July brings the Lake Chelan Rodeo to town, this year on July 31 and August 1. See all the cowboys and cowgirls, hear the golden voice of rodeo announcer Cody Hodge, and be thrilled at the amazing feats of the McMillan Family Trick Riders that keep you on the edge of your seat with rodeo action. It’s the greatest show on dirt. See
