By Emily Cieslak 108 E Woodin Ave. seems to be destined for art. From 1990 to 2000, it housed Wapato Studio. Next it was Main Street Gallery and then Silver Star Gallery. Since December, it is the home of Gallery Muse Chelan, Chelan’s only business dedicated solely to art. When Muse’s owners, Rose Weagant Olcott and Jason Olcott, moved from Methow Valley to Chelan, Rose said she left a huge art culture to arrive at a place where art is less of a focus. She found this exciting, a challenge waiting to be taken on. By opening their business, she and her husband joined three other art galleries in the effort to keep Chelan Valley’s art culture thriving, not only now, but for generations to come. “There is a large art community (in Chelan), but not a large culture,” Rose said. “It is kind of a challenge in a digital age. We are trying to get young people excited again about owning a piece of art.”

Having an artist as a father, Rose grew up with an appreciation for art and personally considers writing her best medium. When the married couple saw the vacant space on Woodin Avenue, they remembered all those conversations about opening a gallery and knew this was the place to do it. “We didn’t have a business plan. We were just like, ‘Let’s have an art gallery and see what happens,’ “ Rose said. Finding local artists was the easy part of starting

up. Rose said all but one of her artists live within 15 miles of the store and estimates she sees more than 10 artists a week who want to have their pieces in the gallery. “Most of the artists I’m featuring have 20 to 40 years of experience, but they didn’t have a place to feature their art,” Rose said. Now, they have a home. In the gallery’s front room, the walls are exclusively for the artists the gallery represents, holding more than 40 pieces that range in price from $200 to $3,500, Rose said. The back room holds art shows, from decorated body mannequins to a photography collection of North Central Washington, currently on display. For the other art galleries, the story behind their beginnings sounds familiar. A love for art, whether their own or another, triggers an urge to create a refuge for it. For over 30 years, Allisons of Manson has been the go-to location for home decorations in Manson. When owner and artist Nicky Allison wanted to give a space for local artists, she dedicated the second floor to an art gallery, manager Diana Hoyt said.

INSIDE STORY

Lake Chelan This Week

ART YOU CAN WEAR

Currently, the gallery is holding the display, “Art by the Foot.” These foot-long art pieces are up for silent auction with proceeds going to the Lake Chelan Artist Alliance.

Opposite page: Rose Weagant Olcott and Jason Olcott, owners of Gallery Muse Chelan, stand in the gallery they opened in December. “We want our gallery to be unique and engaging,” Rose said. Photo provided by Rose Weagant Olcott.

Barbara Koening, member of the alliance and former owner of Main Street Gallery, said she first started the gallery in Edmonds not as an artist but as a friend and supporter of artists. Her son, Dave Koening, now owns it.

Left: The Main Street Gallery outfits the creative soul with everything from dresses, blouses, purses, handmade jewelry and, of course, art.

“Both my son and I enjoy talking to people and helping find art,” Barbara said. After a few moves, the gallery has resided in its current location, 208 E. Woodin Ave., for about 13 years. All of the featured artists are from Washington, and some have been showing in the gallery for more than 20 years. “We trust them, and they trust us,” Barbara said. In addition to the paintings on the walls or pottery in the corner, the gallery also sells artistic clothing. “It started as a small art gallery [but then] I started to bring artsy clothing pieces, and that took over,” Barbara said. “The clothes have a unique twist; you won’t find them at the mall.”

Friday, June 26, 2015

“People in Chelan want to see Chelan,” Barbara said. “It gives them something to remember Chelan by.” Adam Nelson, owner of the Black Dog Frame Shop, has found this true for his business as well. Launched seven years ago and named after the companion he took to work, the frame shop expanded its merchandise to clothing, jewelry and decorations. The hot items? Dog-themed anything and vintage, Chelan-themed prints made in-house.

On Wednesdays from now through September, the gallery hosts a fashion show displaying their clothing and accessories at Sorrento’s Ristorante at Tsillan Cellars, Chelan. The gallery has also encouraged some of its artists to teach classes in Chelan. For more information on upcoming fashion shows and classes, flip to the events section on page 4-5.

“I like the creative part of exploring ideas of what to put on a wall, looking for a display, seeing the customers’ reactions and wrapping it up for them,” Nelson said.

Though a rack of clothing set outside the door may bring tourists in the gallery, a painting of the area is the souvenir they want to walk out with to cherish memories.

“Now is the time to get more galleries. We have a big wine culture in Chelan, and art and wine go hand-in-hand,” Rose said. “It seems like the climate is right and the opportunity is there.”

In a hub of recreation, food and wine, four art galleries may not seem like a bad number, yet for art enthusiasts, there is always more to imagine. Starbuck’s Coffee Company

Nestled on the banks of Columbia River inside a 100+year-old apple packing shed sits Lone Pine Fruit & Espresso. Owner Jim Walker purchased the building and orchards in 2000. They sold peaches on the side of the road and thought, “…let's transition the housing building into an enclosed fruit stand.” Fifteen years later, their renowned pies have been featured in a novel titled ‘Apple Pie’ by John T. Edge, Saveur Magazine and

Everyday Rachael Ray Magazine! “Always be honest and give the best customer service experience to all that take the time to stop,” expressed Lone Pine Fruit & Espresso manager Jenny Robelia when asked about her business philosophy. “We say ‘sharing the local love’…meaning there are so many talented, amazing, delicious products made right here in our valley and we love to support those small businesses in our business… Jim always says, ‘we are not in the business of storage’ so if I have it, it's out for you enjoy! Running a small business is an everyday, all hours of the day challenge, so it's home. We want it to feel like home to you as well!” We asked Jenny why she remains a supporting member of the Historic Downtown Chelan Association when she isn’t “technically” in Chelan? “Our connection to the community is very important to our business. Our physical location is ‘over the river and through the orchard’ but our heart is in Chelan.” What are the rewards of the business? “Seeing the familiar faces walk through the doors. The relationships and friendships with the staff and customers are priceless. Watching children grow up, loves and losses have built our foundation…and we are blessed to have an amazing staff crew, they’re my rockstars!”

HIGHLIGHTS

Lake Chelan This Week

summer highlights Stick around or come back Friday, July 3, to be here for the annual Chelan Rockin’ Fireworks Show presented by the Historic Downtown Chelan Association. Come down to the lake at 10pm and watch the fireworks light up the sky over the lake. Suggested places to enjoy the show are at Don Morse Park and Lakeside Park.

Don’t miss the Seahawks Fan Fest By Bryce Newberry For Lake Chelan This Week

Get out your 12th Man gear and get down to Don Morse City Park, 485 W. Manson Hwy, on Saturday, June 27 at 5 p.m. — the Seahawks are coming to town. But … the event is sold out if you haven’t already registered. For those who are attending, look for performances from the Sea Gals (Seahawks cheerleaders) and Blue Thunder (Seahawks drumline). Event organizers will also hold drawings for game tickets, Training camp access and the chance to interact with Seahawks players. Don’t miss Blitz! There will be inflatable games, a pro shop, a water bucket challenge and a mini-cheerleading camp with the Sea Gals. Test your own skills with football drills and a combine challenge. The Beast Bus will be parked on site and player interviews will be conducted. “This is the first fan fest at Lake Chelan,” Tom Buren, Seahawks fan development manager said. “And this is the first time we will have the 12 Fest at a park and not a football field. This is a great opportunity to get to hang out at the lake.” Two Seahawks players are expected to be in attendance. The 12 Tour will go through Pasco and Kennewick, Wasilla, Anchorage, and Barrow, Alaska, including Burnaby and Vancouver, B.C. and Boise, Idaho this summer. Get connected on social media while you’re there. The Seahawks invite you to share your memories on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #12Tour.

Can’t get enough fireworks? On Saturday, the Fourth of July, it’s the 36th annual 4th of July Fireworks—the Big Show in Manson. Enjoy the fireworks over Manson Bay Marina along with live music, beginning at 10:15 sharp, presented by the Manson Business Association. In mid-July, it’s the 34th season of the Lake Chelan Bach Fest, held July 10 through July 18. That’s nine great days of music ranging from classical to jazz to show tunes, chamber music to full orchestra and chorus. Complete information about all events can be found on their website at bachfest. org. If you’re looking for something more active, July 18 &19 brings Chelan Man to the region, a multi-sport weekend of triathlons and running events. From swimming in Lake Chelan, biking along the lake and the Columbia River, and running on paved paths and roads, the event includes a triathlon, 10K and half-marathon runs, half iron marathons and other fitness competitions. Find all the details at chelanman.com. OK, how about something a little less active than hours of running, swimming and biking? The end of July brings the Lake Chelan Rodeo to town, this year on July 31 and August 1. See all the cowboys and cowgirls, hear the golden voice of rodeo announcer Cody Hodge, and be thrilled at the amazing feats of the McMillan Family Trick Riders that keep you on the edge of your seat with rodeo action. It’s the greatest show on dirt. See updates about this event at www.facebook.com/pages/ Lake-Chelan-Rodeo/190570474400112
