It is a little known fact that Hard Row to Hoe Vineyards first went by the name of Balsamroot. Part-owner Judy Phelps had taken an early retirement from her corporate job in research and development and was on the search for a new career path. Eventually, she found the answer inside of a wine glass. “I had been making wine as a hobby for friends and family which I liked doing, so I decided to go into it full time. The wine scene was just getting started here in the valley,” Judy recalled.
Once retired, she returned to school at University of California Davis and earned her Winemaker’s Certificate in order to have the qualifications and “know-how” to make wine commercially. “My husband Don and I bought this beautiful apple orchard in Manson, pulled out the trees, planted grapes, and here we are 12 years later!” Judy said. Don Phelps has a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Washington State University and is now one of the pioneers in the development of estate vineyards on the North Shore. He believes that, “estate grown grapes allows us to differentiate the Lake Chelan terrior and create wines of exceptional quality,” according to Hard Row to Hoe Vineyard’s website. Yet, it wasn’t until 2009 that the vineyard gained the character that we are so familiar with today.

MEET THE WINES ESTATE ESTATE CABERNET CABERNET
FRANC
Judy says, “Our Estate Cabernet Franc has been termed as ‘the finest wine in the valley’. Made from our SalmonSafe and sustainable Glacial Gravel vineyards in Manson. Silky and pure with killer notes of black raspberries and dark cherries.”
In 2009, owners Don and Judy Phelps hired a historian to dig up a story about a local brothel, which they based Hard Row to Hoe around. That year, the Phelps decided it was time to rebrand Balsamroot and hired a historian to do research and dig up some local folklore from Lake Chelan’s past. After some time, he discovered in the remote mining areas a scandalous story about a local brothel. “Edgemont Lodge was built about 1924 a few miles uplake from Lucerne at Lightning Creek in an area called Point Lovely. “During the late 1930’s construction was winding down at Grand Coulee Dam and a few of the Coulee Dam professional ladies moved to Edgemont Lodge to ‘serve’ the miners from the newly operational Howe Sound Mine. “One story has it that a long-time Manson resident ran a rowboat taxi service from Lucerne to Point Lovely in support of the thriving enterprise,” explains the website. “Need we explain more?” So, the Phelps combined the story about the rowboat taxi service with the farming term, and Hard Row to
Hoe Vineyards was born. Today, their tasting rooms are decorated like the rumored brothel may have been with patterned wallpaper and quirky ornaments. Since its opening, the vineyard has had several highlights. They are the only Salmon-Safe and LIVE sustainable vineyard in North Central Washington. They were also named of the Top 22 tasting rooms in the state by Seattle Met magazine, were featured in the New York Times, and even received Business of the Year award in 2012 by the Chamber of Commerce. To celebrate these accomplishments and more, join the 12th Anniversary Celebration at their Lake Chelan tasting room. They are featuring live music from the eclectic Kevin Jones Band in their natural outside amphitheater. Bring a picnic supper, blanket, and lawn chairs. Wine can be purchased by the glass or bottle, and hard cider will be on tap. “Be prepared to have fun and to dance,” Judy says. “This is always a beautiful summer evening, come out and enjoy it.” It’s a great opportunity to experience Lake Chelan wine country for free.
2016 2016
PINOT NOIR Judy says, “The 2016 Pinot Noir has been called by wine critics as ‘one of the few noteworthy Pinot Noirs from Washington State’. It is absolutely amazing; with flavors of herbs, earth, spice and cherry. This is a gem you won’t want to miss.”
LAKE LAKE CHELAN CHELAN
SYRAH SYRAH
Judy says, “ Our Lake Chelan Syrah is very distinctive, with a savory, dark fruit flavors. It is deep, full-bodied and hedonistic. A thrilling wine!”

VERMOUTH VERMOUTH
Judy says, “The Va Va Voom Vermouth is an eye opener for many. Patterned after the vermouths we had while visiting Spain and Italy, the vermouth was made to drink stand-alone, although it is wonderful in cocktails. Like aromatherapy in a glass. I don’t think any other winery in the state is making Vermouth like this.”

RIVERWALK’S SUMMER PICKS
1
There There
Tommy Orange
Fierce, angry, funny, heartbreaking Tommy Orange’s first novel is a wondrous and shattering portrait of an America few of us have ever seen. Tommy Orange writes of the plight of the urban Native American, the Native American in the city, in a stunning novel that grapples with the complex and painful history, with an inheritance of beauty and profound spirituality, and with a plague of addiction, abuse, and suicide. An unforgettable debut, destined to become required reading in schools and universities across the country.
2
The Word Is Murder Anthony Horowitz A stunning, intricate new mystery by the author of the bestselling Magpie Murders. One bright spring morning in London, Diana Cowper - the wealthy mother of a famous actor - enters a funeral parlor. She is there to plan her own service. Six hours later she if found dead in her own home, strangled with a curtain rod. A masterful and tricky mystery that springs many surprises, The Word Is Murder is Anthony Horowitz at his very best.

Shoe Dog: A Memoir By
The Creator Of Nike
Calypso
Phil Knight
David Sedaris
Young, searching, fresh out of business school, Phil Knight borrowed fifty dollars from his father and launched a company with one simple mission: import high-quality, low-cost running shoes from Japan. Selling the shoes from the trunk of his Plymouth Valiant, Knight grossed eight thousand dollars that first year, 1964. Today, Nike’s annual sales top $30 billion.
With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation toward middle age and mortality. Make no mistake: these stories are very, very funny--it’s a book that can make you laugh ‘til you snort, the way only family can. Sedaris’s powers of observation have never been sharper, and his ability to shock readers into laughter unparalleled. But much of the comedy here is born out of that vertiginous moment when your own body betrays you and you realize that the story of your life is made up of more past than future.

1 Lazy River
Added in 2012, this attraction is designed for those who want to create their own water fun or those who just want a laid back float along the over 500 foot river. Ease into the river through Slidewater’s large zero-depth area and enjoy play features around the entire river. The 150-gallon tipping bucket in the zero-depth area is a fantastic way to cool off!

2 Thunder Rapids
A tube slide classic, the river run is one of the most popular slides in the park because it provides a unique experience every time. Ride in your own tube and with a group of up to four people and enjoy multiple chutes, slides and shallow pools as you work your way down over 75 feet of vertical drop before the final crash into the catch pool at the bottom. Sliders must be 48 inches tall to ride.
“The Mains”
Blue Blaster: An over 300 foot slide offering a great mix of straight runs, turns and drops. Enjoy it by yourself or with a young child. Sidewinder: Be ready from the start on this slide as you enter a 360 turn almost immediately and then enjoy multiple quick drops, turns and a tunnel before finally getting splashed into the pool. Corkscrew: Aptly named, this slide allows you to enjoy multiple 360 turns, fast drops, a tunnel and finally a big splash into the pool at the bottom. Bonzai Pipeline: A favorite for parents and children to slide together. This slide offers gentle turns, soft drops and a 360 degree turn at the end.

3 Downhill Racer
Three lanes of racing excitement, the Downhill Racer entices competition, friendly wagers and trash talk as guests race on this head-first mat slide. Enjoy a dramatic drop to start the race and then pick up speed over two more drops before racing to the finish line on the long run out. Advanced racers may need a more challenging finish line! Sliders must be 48 inches tall to race.
7 Purple Haze
For the most adventurous sliders, the Purple Haze is a completely enclosed, pitch black from start to finish slide that carries sliders through over 400 feet of twists, turns and drops before dumping them out into the light and water simultaneously. Slidewaters fastest slide challenges everyone to brave the Haze! Guests must be 48 inches tall, able to swim or wearing a life-saving flotation device to ride.

RIDE RUNDOWN
4 Bug-A-Boo & Squirt Gun
Bug-A-Boo is one of Slidewater’s beginner slides. This slide is perfect for parents and toddlers. Slide together or allow the brave young ones to slide solo while you wait to catch them at the bottom. This short straight slide gets plenty of repeat action from adventurous toddlers and youth. Squirt Gun is a few more steps up the hill and offers a quick drop and a sharp turn for those kids ready for a little speed. This slide is perfect for youngsters looking to spread their wings and prepare for the bigger slides.
5 Whitewater & Run Amuck
Whitewater and Run Amuck are intermediate slides perfect for parents and young kids who want to slide together, race a friend or just enjoy a short, fast slide with quick turns. With the right technique the small flume of these slides can help get guests up to speeds not possible on Slidewater’s bigger slides, but also keep younger sliders feeling safe as they exit into the intermediate splash down pool.
8 Tube Blaster
A tube slide that offers single and double tubes, this attraction is a guest favorite for sliders who want to give up control and handle over 400 feet of slide at high speeds. Multiple 360 degree turns and a surprise shower at the end of the slide provide a thrilling experience for riders of every age. Guests must be 48 inches tall or able to swim or wearing a life-saving flotation device to ride.
9 Aqua Zoo
A special attraction designed to entertain guests under 48 inches, the Aqua Zoo has two kid-friendly animal slides, a whale with an active spout and a teeter-totter with a spraying surprise. The fun for everyone mushroom waterfall is located next to the Aqua Zoo.
