By Emily Cieslak For Lake Chelan This Week
After three hours of driving, you can’t take it anymore. The seat sticks to the skin you sunscreened in anticipation, the kids kick and whine with excitement and the glorious blue sky and river beckon you to come outside. You’ve made it over the passes, drove into Wenatchee and you want out. Yet Lake Chelan is another hour drive away. Or maybe it’s Sunday, the swimsuits packed away and the coolers empty. You coast west on Woodin Ave., well aware that what awaits you is a four hour drive back to reality. The city, the traffic, the job. Whether you want to make your weekend getaway last a little longer or start your adventure before you even hit the lake, we’ve got the agenda to make your road trip memorable. Here’s our list of the best road-side stops to and from Lake Chelan. •

Stemilt Retail Store: 3615 Highway-97A Monday – Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday: 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We all know Wenatchee as the apple capital of the world and Stemilt Growers as one of the main companies behind it. But put a real face, or shall we say fruit, to the name by visiting its retail store right as you leave Wenatchee and enter Highway 97A to Chelan. The spacious store smells of the gleaming fruit it holds—cherries, apples, pears— all from Stemilt farms. Other Northwest produce line the walls, as well as local popcorn, coffee, honey and jam galore. If the fresh fruit isn’t cool enough for you, they also sell Umpqua ice cream

Rocky Reach Dam Park: 6151 Highway-97A Open seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the visitor center and 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for the Museum of the Columbia Take the summer gems you bought at Stemilt and have a mini picnic at one of the tables at Rocky Reach Dam. Perhaps the most manicured public park in the Wenatchee Valley, Rocky Reach may tempt you to stay a little longer and wander in its luscious gardens and grasses. The visitor center is open daily and cures any boredom the kids developed during the drive. They can watch salmon pass through the fishway, hear the generators churn the waters or look at Native American artifacts from before the dam straddled the Columbia. If physical activity is what the kiddos need, an extensive playground makes the park the perfect pit-stop as well.

Lake Chelan This Week
In the 21st century, it’s hard to find anything but syndicated or satellite feed programs, but due to its commitment to “Community Radio,” Chelan is blessed to have a thriving local station. Since 1957, KOZI has been providing hometown chat, music, news, local advertising and even a few jokes. First located on Saunders in the old Morris Building, the station moved to 137 Woodin Ave in the early 1960’s. Where that is now? Check out Westside Pizza! The window to the right of the entrance was where the DJ sat during live broadcasts! FM stations were added and KOZI (part of Icicle Broadcasting) is now housed on Johnson Avenue. Best known for their “2nd Cup of Coffee” program, KOZI allows their listenership to call in and rant, rave, or sell personal items. Not only are Chelan and Brewster sports covered but they are the official HOME OF THE SEATTLE SEAHAWKS for the 2015-16 season! Station Manager Elliott Salmon shared, “Our stations love being a part of the success of and committed to the many communities that we serve. Through community radio we connect the residents of North Central Washington and provide a vehicle for our customers to reach listeners and grow their business.” “The rewards are many,” shared Account Executive Juli Straub, “From advertising a great sale at a local business, sponsoring a non-profit event or helping our neighbor sell their washing machine on 2nd cup. One of our greatest rewards was covering the Carlton Complex fires. The KOZI team was acknowledged time and time again for helping people in the Methow Valley and Pateros navigate the fire danger, as we were the only source for up-to-date fire information. We believe in our communities and they support us.” So whether you need to advertise, sell or listen to the Hawks win, the KOZI family (Elliott, Juli, Joni, Jay, Jim, Hayli, Stacey, Gilberto and Ken) is just a phone call away!

Lake Chelan This Week
HIGHLIGHTS
summer highlights The 2015 summer season is quickly filling with events unique to the area and boasting local flavor. Beginning this weekend, it’s the 34th season of the Lake Chelan Bach Fest, held July 10 through July 18. That’s nine great days of music ranging from classical to jazz to show tunes, chamber music to full orchestra and chorus. Complete information about all events can be found on their website at bachfest.org. If you’re looking for something more active, July 18 and 19 brings Chelan Man to the region, a multi-sport weekend of triathlons and running events. From swimming in Lake Chelan, biking along the lake and the Columbia River to running on paved paths and roads, the event includes a triathlon, 10K and half-marathon runs, half iron marathons and other fitness competitions. Find all the details at chelanman.com. OK, how about something a little less active than hours of running, swimming and biking? The end of July brings the Lake Chelan Rodeo to town, this year on July 31 and Aug. 1. See all the cowboys and cowgirls, hear the golden voice of rodeo announcer Cody Hodge, and be thrilled at the amazing feats of the McMillan Family Trick Riders that keep you on the edge of your seat with rodeo action. It’s the greatest show on dirt. See updates about this event at www.facebook.com/ pages/Lake-Chelan-Rodeo/190570474400112 In August, it’s the 3-day Lake Chelan Fine Arts Festival. Now in its 6th year, this event takes place in Riverwalk Park located in downtown Chelan. Along with fine arts, crafts and music there’s a children’s area full of fun and adventure. One popular event is the silent auction where patrons will have the opportunity to bid on donated pieces of art from some of the top artists in the Chelan community. The event is sponsored by the Lake Chelan Arts Council and the proceeds go to support the local art community including murals, sculptures and scholarships.
In September this area is host to the 14th annual Lake Chelan Shore to Shore Marathon, Half-Marathon and 10K runs. Presented by the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce, the race benefits Chelan and Manson High School teams and programs, as well as the local chapter of Girls on the Run. Lace up your running shoes and register at lakechelanmarathon.com. Back for a second year, the Manson Summer Nights Concert Series returns with an amazing lineup of artists performing their own new and original music from a variety of genres. Held every Sunday evening through Sept. 6, gates open at 6 p.m. It’s outdoor festival seating—bring your lawn chair or blanket to Leffler Field, the open field between Wells Fargo Bank and Mountain View Lodge as you come into Manson, just before Wapato Point Parkway. Parking is free, food & drinks will be available for purchase. Concerts are held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every Sunday, tickets are $10 for adults, 12 and under free. Check out the weekly performers and purchase tickets at mansonsummernights.com. Enjoy live music in the Northwest’s only outdoor concert venue featuring covered seating, at The Deep Water Amphitheater, located at Mill Bay Casino in Manson. Here’s the line-up of performers this season: July 18 – Saturday Night Live Vets: Rob Schneider, Jon Lovitz and Tim Meadows July 24 - MC Hammer July 31 - Martina McBride August 7 - Michael McDonald August 29 - Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo 35th Anniversary Tour With Special Guest Eddie Money Sept. 4 - Morris Day & the Time and Salt N Pepa with Naughty by Nature, Tone Loc, and Sir Mix-A-Lot
Top: A young girl paints her masterpiece at a booth during the Lake Chelan Fine Arts Festival last year. Left: Participants race in the Lake Chelan Shore to Shore run. This event is the last Boston Marathon qualifier in the Pacific Northwest. All three races end at the same finish line, Manson Bay Park. However, it’s the starting line that varies depending on the race’s distance. For instance, the full marathon begins near 25 Mile Creek State Park, the half-marathon begins on South Lakeshore Road, near Karma Vineyards. The 10K starts on Highway 150, adjacent to the Chelan Shores development. Shuttles will leave from North Shore Bible Church to transport runners to their starting lines.

Entiat Troll: Highway 97A bridge Scare the kids silly by finding the troll under the Highway 97A bridge as you enter Entiat. Sculpted by local artist Dale Sanford, the 350-pound troll “took up residence” atop a rock barrier just last month, yet didn’t ask for the Department of Transportation’s permission. After some deliberation about whether it could stay, the city announced the troll is nestled for good following positive feedback and popularity. To see the friendly monster for yourself, pull into Entiat City Park, park at the south end and walk along the gravel Entiaqua trail and Entiat River. 97 Brew: 14419 Highway 97A Open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Recharge with some ice-cold espresso from 97 Brew. Right by the road, this coffee stand sells all kinds of drinks from espresso shakes to frappe’s to smoothies. Try their new lavender lemonade or lavender green tea. Just don’t gulp it down so fast that you won’t have any left to enjoy by the water. Earthquake Point: Along Highway 97A You may know the cliffs along the road to Chelan by heart, but do you know what contributed to them? In 1872, a violent earthquake hit Ribbon Cliff outside of Entiat. This caused the splitting of the mountain and a rock blockage in the Columbia River lasting a few hours. All that remains today are ribbons of lava stripping the face of the cliff and this historical marker on the west side of the road. Just google Earthquake Point Entiat to locate it on the map. Numeral Mountain: Along Highway 97A Admire from afar or park on the side of the road to view the high school pride illustrated on Numeral Mountain as you leave Entiat. Since 1923, seniors have painted their graduating class number on the rocky cliffs
overlooking the Entiat River, according to the City of Entiat. Try to find your class on the cliff, but don’t ask how they got it up there. If you turn left to take Highway 971 to Chelan: • Watson’s Alpenhorn Cafe: 7600 Lakeshore Rd Daily 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. • There is something about road trips in the summertime that make you want to stop for burgers, fries and shakes. After taking a scenic drive in forests slash hayfields, you will come to Lake Chelan State Park and the cafe, part of Watson’s resort, right across from it. However, it’s not your typical “cafe.” For almost 50 years, Alpenhorn has been serving up classic burgers, fried seafood, shakes and even good ole’ malts. Did I forget to mention fries? That’s because they need their own sentence, with not only potatoes to choose from but also deep fried pickles, mushrooms and calamari. All this is served in cozy blue cabin with a log deck. Now that’s what you call fast-food. If you continue on Highway 97A to Chelan: • Bear Mountain Ranch: • Past the tunnel and the valley that follows, there will be an exit to Bear Mountain Ranch on either side of the road. Take the turn that faces Lakeside. The steep climb transports you to a scene a bit different from the small, lake-town vibe of downtown Chelan. Gated houses, sprawling grape fields and red roofs make you feel as though you are lost in Tuscany. A golf-course serves as a reminder that you are still in America but still feels luxurious. Yet, you don’t need to spend any money to make this stop worthwhile. The high elevation gives you a complete, stunning view of the lake. Odds are in your favor that the water will be vividly blue and the skies deliciously sunny. Pull over, take in the sights and lake smells and you have the best introduction or farewell to your vacay in Chelan.

MUSIC
Back for Bach: Music festival rings for 34 year
Schedule of events
A string quartet plays at the 33rd Lake Chelan Bach Fest. Right: Last year’s Pops in the Park concert wows the crowd. By Bryce Newberry For Lake Chelan This Week
The Lake Chelan Bach Fest will return to the Chelan Valley for the 34th season this week. The festival is filled with events for all ages throughout the week and each lunch hour. According to its website, the Lake Chelan Bach Fest aims to inspire, enrich and educate audiences, participants and the communities of the region through experiencing a variety of live artistic performances. “It’s come a long way,” Kerry Travers, co-president of the Bach Fest board of directors, said. “It started out as a weekend singing Bach, and it has grown to the point where we have over 100 musicians coming to the Lake Chelan area to perform.” Put on by a board of directors and volunteers, totaling at least 75 individuals, nine days of music, including classical, jazz, show tunes, chamber music and full orchestra and chorus, bring the Lake Chelan Valley to life. More than 20 events take place over the course of the week. “We’re a totally small town community-run festival,” Travers said. Most events similar to the Lake Chelan Bach Fest are put on by universities or institutions, she said. Many events are free with donations accepted, said Travers, but some events are ticketed. A season pass can be purchased for $50 to attend all of the Bach Fest events. Tickets can also be purchased at the door
and are free for anyone under age 18. To purchase tickets for individual events, go to the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce’s new location at 216 E. Woodin Ave., Chelan. Many of the musicians come from all over the country to perform at the Lake Chelan Bach Fest, and several of the performance-goers flock to Chelan from all over the state, Travers said. “Live music is a whole different thing than listening to something in a recording,” Travers said. “It’s exciting to see people actually playing the music.” When musicians come to town, they stay with host families in the Chelan area. They only have a few days to rehearse their music with the full orchestra prior to performing during the festival, Travers said. Former Wenatchee Valley Symphony Director Daniel Baldwin is the 2015 musical and artistic director for the festival. He is a professor of music at Luther College in Iowa. The Pops in the Park concert, held at Riverwalk Park in Chelan, is free to attend and overlooks the river. Bring a blanket and lawn chair to watch the show from. Festival organizers want Bach Fest-goers to “friendraise” this year and bring a friend to any festival event. “Live music provides a community that we don’t really have anymore,” Travers said. “It’s quality. Our quality in the last 10 years has really excelled.”

Boutique of the Week~ Willow bOUTIQUE By Emily Cieslak For Lake Chelan This Week
After entering Willow in Downtown Chelan, you may want to pay owner Robyn Skaar to be your personal home decorator. White walls and furniture feel alive with green blooms, luxe cosmetics and vintage decorations sprinkled atop. The boutique is a talented example of designing a space; every item fits in and contributes to the stylish theme rather than overwhelming it. Yet, unfortunately, Skaar dedicates decorating solely to the store she has had for eight years. Once you get over how beautiful it is, you can take in all that is for sale. LCTW photo/Emily Cieslak
“It started as a home decor store,” Skaar said. “We now sell baby products, Brighton jewelry, Archipelago fragrances.” The list doesn’t stop there. Like most lifestyle boutiques, they carry creative pieces of clothing but you can also find
Store Hours:
hoodies and tanks from Lakegirl to buy as souvenirs. Or save memories by scent; Thymes body products bottle aqua. If you would rather keep the lakeside vibe going with something more permanent than clothing or lotions, the shop’s decorations are for you. From lanterns to wicker baskets, to glass floats and vases, it all seems fitting to outfit a beach house. Vibrant pillows and wildlife art keep it modern, but it’s the refurbished furniture that give the shop its charming summer-worn feel. Contrasting the old is a large section for babies. This isn’t your average blanket we are talking here. Sleepers, swaddles and bibs come in more colors than some adult versions. Capture your child’s best fashion moment in wooden photo frames from Mud Pie; the captions are just adorable. “I try to carry custom, one of a kind pieces,” Skaar said. “What you don’t see in department stores.”
