In some countries he’s known as Walter, Charlie, Holger, or Wally. Known all over the world for his elusive talents, he is possibly the most wanted man on Earth and now he’s been spotted in Chelan His name here is Waldo and Chelan visitors can find him in 36 downtown locations during July. Libby Manthey, the owner of Riverwalk Books in Chelan said this tradition started three years ago when the Where’s Waldo? books turned 25. To celebrate the event, Candlewick Press decided to begin a promotion which would allow children to search for Waldo in their communities and win prizes. The hunt for Waldo now occurs in about 250 towns throughout the United States and is also put on in the United Kingdom where it’s known as Where’s Wally? Different communities may have variations of this adventure, but in Chelan it begins by picking up a “passport” at Riverwalk Books. This passport has a designated spot for each participating business to stamp or sign when spotters discover each of Waldo’s hiding places.

“A big plus is it helps us get people into the stores,” Amy Young, a sales associate at Memories by the Lake said. “Even locals who may not have come in regularly. They come in and see what’s around and find stuff they like. So word of mouth starts to spread and the kids just really enjoy themselves.” Seven-year-old Emily Boundy and her family looked for Waldo while they visited on July 5. Emily lives in Seattle and walked from store to store with her passport in one hand and holding her father’s hand

in the other. “It’s been fun going around with her and giving some hints,” Jared Boundy said. “Some of them were hard to find and some of them she found pretty quickly.” Emily smiled shyly from ear-to-ear and said she had been to seven stores so far. “It’s fun that they’re in different spots,” she said. By getting at least 15 stamps or signatures, participants receive an “I found Waldo” button, which is limited to the first 125 Waldo spotters, and a coupon for $1 off the purchase of any Where’s Waldo? book. Seven-year-old Van Keough-Michaels completed the hunt for Waldo and claimed his prize at Riverwalk. “[I liked] going to the different buildings and seeing all the different places,” Van said. Those who find at least 29 of Waldo’s 36 hiding places also get entered in a drawing for a 6-volume deluxe set of Waldo books and other prizes. Nancy Koop, the assistant Manager at Swim World in Chelan said the store has participated in the Waldo tradition all three years. “It allows the parents to shop while the kids do something fun,” Koop said. The event will end on July 31 at 3 p.m. with a grand celebration and prize drawing at Riverwalk Books. “The great thing about Waldo is that he’s generational,” Manthey said. “So parents remember Waldo from when they were probably i n middle school and now they get to share it with their kids.”

WINE

w

This week’s pick: Chelan Estate Winery About: There’s a lot of history behind this winery, and a lot of good wine as a result. Chelan Estate was one of the first wineries in the area to be licensed to sell wine. Owners Bob and Mary Broderick took a shot at growing grapes at their vacation home in 1991, knowing the valley had the potential to produce great wine. After years of experimenting, they bought land in Chelan in 1999, and opened their winery shortly thereafter sporting their unusual flagship: a 2004 Pinot Noir. The winery was chosen for its location, as it stayed cool enough to grow the Pinot Noir grapes, unlike other parts of the lake. Photos provided

They recommend… The reds. Mary said the winery is known for all of its reds, which have less tannin than many other red wines, and boast a much smoother finish. Originally, the winery hadn’t planned to grow whites or rosés at all, but the hot weather of the Lake Chelan Valley called for something a little lighter.

Why stop by? If you’re serious about wine, this might be your first stop in Chelan. “It’s all about the wine,” said Mary. “It’s all about showcasing Chelan.” The winery, which doesn’t offer events or food pairings like others, focuses entirely on allowing visitors to taste and take home the wines.
