Stretching afloat
Yoga on paddle boards? We try the trend for the first time By Emily Cieslak
For Lake Chelan This Week
Before, it all seemed fun and easy. Shifting my balance as I paddle across the lake while the breeze tangles my hair and the sun kisses my shoulders. Throwing a downward dog in there, because with all fours on the board, balancing couldn’t be hard, not even for a newbie, right? Despite how effortlessly I imagined my first Paddle Board Yoga class to run, second-thoughts finally formulate on the morning of. Out of all the triple digits days, this Sunday morning is a mere 73 degrees with overcast skies. No one is on the lake as I drive into Chelan. Is this a sign that I should turn around before I hurt myself? I mean, who am I to attempt yoga on a paddle board? Never before had I set foot on a board, and my yoga experiences never left the indoors. Yet I as I pull into Riverwalk Park Lynda Kennedy, instructor and owner of Yogachelan, waves, I know it’s too late to turn around. Handing me a waiver, she tells me she has been instructing these classes for about five years and has had everyone from 5 year-olds to 70 year-olds take them. “It’s a real mix between those people who have never done yoga and those who have done yoga and they just want to experience it now on a paddle board, and it’s become quite the little craze,” Kennedy says.

With this being only her second class she’s held this summer, it’s nearly full with six students (Kennedy caps them at eight). As we each go around the circle, I am relieved to hear a range of skill levels; some have done paddle boarding and no yoga or yoga but no paddle boarding, like me.

Students warm up in the Paddle Board Yoga class on July 12 in an upward extended feet pose. Out of nowhere, a go kart brings boards from Lakerider Sports and employees throw them into the water. Kennedy tells us to grab a life jacket and shows us how to use the paddle. The water isn’t too bad for a 73 degree day. Balancing on the board — once I have hopped from my knees to my feet — is fairly easy; it’s the paddling that gets me. The paddle seems a little too long for my 5-foot-3-inch frame, and rather than moving forward, each stroke turns me left or right. I nearly run into a few classmates and certainly have the slowest pace, but once I get the hang of it, I love it. Forget about yoga; can I paddle around the lake all day? Yet we paid for yoga. When we reach the docks further down the park, Kennedy ties our six boards in line and throws an anchor into the water to keep us together during the practice, not drifting with each inhale we take. “How many people have fell in while paddle boarding before?” she asks. One person raises their hand. “Okay, we will fix that.” Kennedy says with a mischievous grin.

Lake Chelan This Week
HIGHLIGHTS
summer highlights The 2015 summer and fall seasons are quickly filling with events unique to the area and boasting local flavor. This weekend brings Chelan Man to the region, a multi-sport weekend of triathlons and running events. From swimming in Lake Chelan, biking along the lake and the Columbia River and to running on paved paths and roads, the event includes a triathlon, 10K and half-marathon runs, half iron marathons and other fitness competitions. Find all the details at chelanman.com. OK, how about something a little less active than hours of running, swimming and biking? The end of July brings the Lake Chelan Rodeo to town, this year on July 31 and Aug. 1. See all the cowboys and cowgirls, hear the golden voice of rodeo announcer Cody Hodge and be thrilled at the amazing feats of the McMillan Family Trick Riders that keep you on the edge of your seat with rodeo action. It’s the greatest show on dirt. See updates about this event at www.facebook.com/ pages/Lake-Chelan-Rodeo/190570474400112 In August it’s the three-day Lake Chelan Fine Arts Festival. Now in its 6th year, this event takes place in Riverwalk Park located in downtown Chelan. Along with fine arts, crafts and music, there’s a children’s area full of fun and adventure. One popular event is the silent auction where patrons will have the opportunity to bid on donated pieces of art from some of the top artists in the Chelan community. The event is sponsored by the Lake Chelan Arts Council, and the proceeds go to support the local art community including the murals, sculptures and scholarships. More information can be found on their website at lakechelanartscouncil.com. In September this area is host to the 14th annual Lake Chelan Shore to Shore Marathon, Half-Marathon and 10K runs. Presented by the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce, the race benefits Chelan and Manson High School teams and programs, as well as the local chapter of
Girls on the Run. Lace up your running shoes and register at lakechelanmarathon.com. In October, the first two weekends of the month are dedicated to the Lake Chelan Crush Festival. Celebrate the grape harvest and watch the grapes as they tumble through the press and taste the raw juice. Wineries throughout the Chelan Valley have events, dinners and special tastings, Oct. 3-4 and 10-11. Details are at lakechelanwinevalley.com. Back for a second year, the Manson Summer Nights Concert Series returns with an amazing lineup of artists performing their own new and original music from a variety of genres. Held every Sunday evening through Sept. 6, gates open at 6 p.m. It’s outdoor festival seating—bring your lawn chair or blanket to Leffler Field, the open field between Wells Fargo Bank and Mountain View Lodge as you come into Manson, just before Wapato Point Parkway. Parking is free, food and drinks will be available for purchase. Concerts are held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults, 12 and under free. Check out the weekly performers and purchase tickets at mansonsummernights.com. Enjoy live music in the Northwest’s only outdoor concert venue featuring covered seating, at The Deep Water Amphitheater, located at Mill Bay Casino in Manson. Here’s the line-up of performers this season: July 18 – Saturday Night Live Vets: Rob Schneider, Jon Lovitz and Tim Meadows July 24 - MC Hammer July 31 - Martina McBride Aug. 7 - Michael McDonald Aug. 29 - Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo 35th Anniversary Tour With Special Guest Eddie Money Sept. 4 - Morris Day & the Time and Salt N Pepa with Naughty by Nature, Tone Loc, and Sir Mix-A-Lot
An athlete races in the Lake Chelan Shore to Shore run. This event is the last Boston Marathon qualifier in the Pacific Northwest. All three races end at the same finish line, Manson Bay Park. However, it’s the starting line that varies depending on the race’s distance. For instance, the full marathon begins near 25 Mile Creek State Park, the half-marathon begins on South Lakeshore Road, near Karma Vineyards. The 10K starts on Highway 150, adjacent to the Chelan Shores development. Shuttles will leave from North Shore Bible Church to transport runners to their starting lines.

Lake Chelan This Week
ADVENTURES
Photo provided/Natalie Noyd Wenatchee teens work their way up the rocks on the south shore of Lake Chelan in June. Climbing through the rocks leads to perches to dive from into the lake.
Rocky footing, jagged waters:
World staff member braves steep heights for cliff jumping into Lake Chelan By Bryce Newberry
been swimming to reach them. Once you’ve found a comfortable place to jump from, make your friends or family encourage you. Really. Make them do it, or maybe even have them count down for you — there’s no backing down once they get to zero.
For Lake Chelan This Week
When in Chelan, don’t miss out on what some locals participate in each time they are on the lake: cliff jumping. But, I have one recommendation — give your arm muscles plenty of rest prior to scaling the rocks and preparing for the big jump. To find the rocks, head over to the south shore of the lake and go past Lake Chelan State Park. The rocks will be hard to miss, spray painted with many different designs and logos. Once there, take a jump out of the boat, or however you may have arrived and swim to the base. In choppy conditions, you’ll need to be ready to work hard. The rocks extend into the water and prove most slippery when waves are crashing into you and you’ve
Then, it’s simple: grab on and go. Get your footing and get climbing any way that you can and keep going until you’ve reached a stopping point. Any of the stopping points along the way are a great place to jump from.
JUMP!
“At first, the jump doesn’t seem too scary, but, once you’re in the air and moving — wow. It’s a long drop.”
At first, the jump doesn’t seem too scary, but, once you’re in the air and moving — wow. It’s a long drop. But before you know it, you’re in the water again, swimming to the boat, or whatever you may have arrived on.
—Bryce Newberry Take a rest in the boat — your body will need it — and go back up. And get higher each time. If you’re feeling extra daring, just keep on going. But if you’re like me and it’s your first time braving the thrill, stay low and continually work your way up to a higher perch.
One last point: make sure someone in the boat is taking pictures. You never know what your face may look like, and it’ll be a good memory to have.

CONTINUED Yoga
From page 2 like warrior one or two. While on land I can easily lunge or lift up either leg, even coming to a lunge on the board takes intense concentration. “The connection to the core is much, much deeper. We take a lot for granted when we are standing on our feet on the earth. When we start rocking, other muscles got to start squeezing together to counter for gravity and the movement of the body,” Kennedy says. “It really helps with posture. You can’t lean forward, or you will fall forward.” The class of six holds a kneeling “lord of dance pose” during the Paddle Board Yoga class led by Yogachelan instructor Lynda Kennedy. Below, Kennedy instructs her students to do a child’s pose. Innocently enough, we warm up with savasana, a yoga pose, lying face up on the board. Compared to lying on a mat, this is heaven. The water rocks you steadily back and forth as if you were on a dock except the rhythm is stronger. The sounds of a morning on the lake—birds, boats and a far off fountain—awaken the senses. The sun gently burns your face and water laps your fingertips. You never want this peace to end. But Kennedy brings us back to the reality of the practice and motions. She starts us slow with child’s pose, boat pose and cobbler’s pose. We gradually work up to upward and downward dogs, and the first person falls in at last. Chuckling with the rest of them, half of me hopes I won’t be the next one to go over board while the other half wishes I fall in and get it over with already.
Though the temperature is still mild, I start to build a sweat from all the flexing. Right when I think I survived all the toughest poses, my neighbor topples over and takes me down with her. Yet there are no hard feelings; I’m happy to take a refresher and get my hair wet. I have nothing left to lose. Well, maybe time. In what seemed like a short span actually nears an hour, and we paddle back to end the class. Again, I remain at the end of the paddling train, but I don’t mind the longer trip back. One only gets so many times to coast in life, and I certainly want to make this one last. “The more we explore the space between the beginning and the end of the movement, the more control we have in the body, and that’s what paddle boarding yoga does for you,” Kennedy says. “You have to slow down because if you don’t, you fall right in the water. It’s about finding the journey of each movement and taking it very slowly and connected.”
“You are so focused on trying to stay on the board, I think it is really more about dropping the focus for a moment and having some fun,” Kennedy says to the class. “Letting go of those tight muscles you just want to squeeze. Really you need to be more fluid and powerful; you need to respond to the water that’s moving.” With every movement on the board, my body has to stay flexed to not fall over with the waves. This is especially true as we transition into more difficult moves
More: Lynda Kennedy, owner of Yogachelan, teachers Paddle Board Yoga every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. through Sept. 6. Classes are one hour and cost $42 per individual including board rental. Private lessons or groups can also be scheduled. One must register and pay 24 hours in advance. “I want everyone to try yoga, and so I figure out adventures that people who never had done yoga before will come and try,” Kennedy says. “So maybe they want to learn how to paddle board, but yoga is not that interesting to them, but once they get out there and try to paddle and experience that part they will learn they enjoy yoga.” Besides the water, Yogachelan takes the practice to local wineries, parks, live concerts and just this upcoming year, Africa. To see all their classes, events and rates, visit their website, yogachelan.com.

SHOP
Boutique of the Week~ Culinary Apple By Emily Cieslak For Lake Chelan This Week
You don’t even know what your kitchen is missing until you step into the Culinary Apple in downtown Chelan. BBQ grill mat, herb scissors, spiral cutter — sound like the tools of a Hollywood chef? These are a few of the store’s top sellers. As a gourmet kitchen shop, it shouldn’t be too surprising the Culinary Apple carries the most wide and in-depth assortment of accessories, books and condiments for the kitchen. Yet their attention to detail does not stop there; they are thorough in nearly all of their categories.

satisfy their customers’ diverse interests and needs, especially by making themselves accessible online. “We try to appeal to people of all ages and from all places,” David said. Having celebrated the store’s 19th anniversary in June, the Weldy’s are right up to speed with using technology to their advantage. Social media accounts keep shoppers updated on what’s new in store, and their cozy website allows them to order online. “Anything can be shipped to you,” David said. This includes their impressive gift baskets loaded with local apples, wine and treats. No matter how helpful their online store is, though, don’t miss out on the opportunity to see the store in person. Glide your fingers across smooth utensils, deliberate what jam to buy and with your best beaming smile, ask for a sample of fudge.
