Have you ever been to a rodeo? Seen a Belgian draft horse? What about a family of trick riders under the age of 15? Well, you’re in the right place. The Lake Chelan Rodeo opens its doors 5 p.m. Friday, Aug.1. And, according to Chelan High School Agriculture teacher and rodeo organizer Rod Cool, you’ll want to get there early. The rodeo goes way back in Chelan, and Cool’s family has been there all along. “For me it’s kind of a family tradition,” he said. His grandfather put on the first 15 rodeos in the area in the 1920s when rodeo still took place on the beach on the Fourth of July. Now, a little off the beaten path, you’ll find the same rodeo on the grassy, expansive rodeo grounds of Chelan, where it moved in the 1950s.
LAKE CHELAN this week Published each Friday from June 20th through October 10th by World Publishing Co., Wenatchee, WA. Now, Cool said, the rodeo attracts visitors from all over, many who are not what you’d call regular rodeo fans. “It’s a big event, and for a lot of our crowd — over half of them — it’s tje first time they’ve ever been to a rodeo,” he said. “We try to make it user-friendly.” The event, described by Cool as “fast-moving” and high-energy” doesn’t take long. The doors are open by 5 p.m., the rodeo is on by 7 and people are headed home by 9:45 that night. But trust us, there’s plenty. When the doors open, so do the vendors, including the cook shack, the beer garden, and all of the shopping booths. There will be western clothing and jewelry shops, and a hat maker straight out of Texas. Both nights, The McMillan Family Trick Riders will perform, featuring four riders between the ages of 8 and 14. And then, oh boy, the real rodeo starts. As a sanctioned rodeo, this is
the real deal, with all classic rodeo events and only classic cowboys riding (Participants have to be employed by a ranch to ride.) “We try to keep people in the seats, so we work hard to put on a quality show,” said Cool. “We like to tell people, ‘We’ll sell you the whole seat, but you’ll only need the edge of it.’” And, of course, the 20-year-old tradition of the World Famous Chicken Race. Kids who grab a chicken earn $10. “It’s the best five minutes of organized chaos you’ll ever see,” said Cool. Plus, this is a rodeo you can feel good about attending: because it’s hosted by Chelan High School FFA Alumni, all profit goes to the current FFA for travel funds and scholarships. For more information see the events calendar on pages 3-4. Follow them on Facebook for a complete list of events.

Gamble Sands 200 Sands Trail Road • 509-436-8323 • gamblesands.com Come celebrate the grand opening this Saturday, Aug. 2 of Brewster’s newest golf course, Gamble Sands. Chances are, you’ve never seen a course quite like this. The course was built by David McLay Kidd, the perfect architect for the job. As both a Scotsman and a resident of the Northwest, his experience with designing courses coupled with his appreciation for the natural beauty of the area resulted in the stunning landscape that is Gamble Sands. All 18 holes were “discovered,” not built. And the course was carved out of the existing land-

scape — nothing was imported. The result is an authentic and sprawling landscape with no homes or businesses to mar the views of the water below and the snow-tipped Cascades in the distance. The architect has little doubt that visitors will flock to the course from all over the country, describing it as a “once in a lifetime” experience. That means now’s the time to beat the crowds. No more than 40 minutes out of downtown Chelan, if you’re a golfer there’s no excuse not to spend an afternoon trying your hand at Gamble Sands.

WINE
w
This week’s pick: Legend Cellars About: Being just under a year old, Legend Cellars is a member-owned winery that has already added quite a few exciting things to its tasting room. They specialize in blends and produce 400 cases of wine per year. “We really invite people to come in and sit down,” Owner Judith Smasne said. Instead of just having a bar for people to stand at, she said Legend has tables and chairs for people to come, sit, and enjoy themselves at. She said they encourage people to ask questions about the wines and the winery. They recommend… The Splendid Spirit white blend. “You don’t find a lot of really nice, full bodied white wines [like this one],” Smasne said. “It has a nice savoriness and it pairs beautifully with food.” Why stop by? This winery has the first approved Vermouth in the state of Washington, which has won two silver medals. It’s also the closest winery to the lake, just a “stone’s throw” from the Manson Bay.

Events and Promotions: Legend puts on Murder Mysteries once every quarter where guests act out a character and try to solve a murder. The most recent one occurred on July 26. The winery is also adding food to its tasting room. It will offer antipasti dishes that pair well with wine. Legend will celebrate its first anniversary on Aug. 16. and will feature a summer concert series later this year.
Great Wine. Great Food. Great Fun. They all add up to a great evening. It’s the largest gathering of wineries in the region, and the only professionally-judged wine event dedicated to wines produced in Chelan, Douglas, Grant and Okanogan counties. Meet the wine makers, and taste the award-winning wines from over 30 regional wineries, plus enjoy locally hand-crafted distilled spirits, cider and beer, as well as a wide selection of amazing food.
