helan to Africa returns to Benson Vineyards Estate Winery this weekend for their 11th annual benefit concert and auction. It benefits two organizations dedicated to helping children in need: Touching Tiny Lives and Thrive Chelan Valley.

The inspiration for the event came to organizer Amy Ellingson in a hotel room in Seattle. She was there for a medical conference and was alone in her hotel room, watching TV. She came across a captivating film: A Closer Walk. Released in 2003, it details the ravages of the HIV/AIDS epidemic across the globe. At the end of the movie, people like Bono and the Dalai Lama urged watchers to take action on making access to treatment a reality for the world.

“They looked into the camera and acknowledged that the numbers seemed overwhelming, but if we all take some action, a difference can be made,” Ellingson recalled. “Well, I was very inspired by their call to action and took that back to Chelan and shared with various like-minded people.” The group decided that helping children in Africa spoke to them most. “These children are totally innocent. They have taken no part in causing their current circumstances. And, there was very little infrastructure to help them due to the poverty of many of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa,” Ellingson said. They set off to find an organization they could work with to make their mission possible. They sought one small enough to allow them to make a personal connection and impact. A LOOK AT THE CAUSES

The concert is hosted at the beautiful Benson Vineyards Estate Winery. University of Notre Dame, where Ellingson had attented college, she came across a story about Touching Tiny Lives (TTL). The organization cares for children that are affected—and usually orphaned by—HIV or AIDS in rural Lesotho, a country landlocked in South Africa with one of the highest rates of HIV-positive people in the world. Ellingson and her group fell in love with their mission and impact, and decided to host an event to raise proceeds. They decided on hosting a benefit auction at a winery, “because of the lovely place we live,” according to Ellingson. For the past nine years, they have hosted the event at Benson Vineyards Estate Winery in Manson. Kevin Jones Band has performed at the event most years. “We have come a long way,” Ellingson reflected. A few years ago, the group also decided on a local partner: Thrive Chelan Valley. They wanted to attract

people to the event that were more interested in a local cause. They reached out to Thrive after being impressed by the powerful work the organization had done in the valley for at-risk youth.

The impact of Chelan to Africa is visible. The donations from the concerts have enabled Thrive to make their mentor program a reality. They have recently hired a director to the program, and have paired up 30 adults with young people that need support. As for TTL, the donations from the Chelan concert make up 10 percent of their annual operating budget. “Every dollar that we raise for TTL makes a direct impact for the children in Lesotho,” Ellingson explained. Many stop by in the morning to pick up a danish with locally-grown fruit, chocolate crossaint, or fresh fruit scone. “We take pride in what we do and we are grateful to the community for keeping us so busy!” Lindsay said.
