LCTW: Talking about the future... what are you most looking forward to on your tour? BJ: John Denver put it so perfectly in one of his own songs… “Have to go and see some friends of mine—some that I don’t know Some who aren’t familiar with my name…” I am most looking forward to the people I will meet along the way. I’ve met wonderful, lovely people…

listening to wander with me, too! It’s a “thank you” as well as a first “hello”, and it’s a “remember when” as well as a “what’s next?”. I look at albums as chapters. And this chapter not only highlights where my family, friends, fans, and I have been together so far, but it also presents a hopeful outlook for the future.

INSIDE STORY everywhere! Everywhere I go, I somehow luck out with the sweetest, most beautiful audiences. I rarely know who will be sitting in the audience beforehand, and I don’t always know if my songs will be a good fit until I start singing; but I’ve made very dear friends here and there simply because of a little music. How neat is that? LCTW: What was it like moving to the Pacific Northwest after growing up in Chicago? What do you love about the area—and about Lake Chelan, as well? BJ: I moved from Illinois to Washington four and a half years ago. My family was moving here, and I didn’t want to be left behind!

younger I dealt with crazy stage-fright and the anxiety that came with that), but I’ve always wanted to be a singer/songwriter. Every concert I’ve ever attended has just strengthened that wish. One of the first people I saw in concert was John Denver (not a bad first concert, right?), and I was little, so I don’t remember it all; but I remember he looked like he was having the time of his life. In more recent years, seeing Brad Paisley or Alison Krauss or Kenny Chesney, I’ve always come away thinking the same thing. They all looked and sounded like they were having the times of their lives—doing what they were born to do and giving so much of themselves… That’s what I’ve always wanted to do.

LCTW: Who are your musical influences? One of the easiest differences to spot between Illinois and Washington is the scenery. I love the Midwest dearly, BJ: How long do we have? but there is no comparison to the wild beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Illinois I’m just kidding. doesn’t have many mountain ranges MY PLAN or wildernesses that I know of. Here, John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot there are more of those than you could are two of my all-time favorites. I’ve IS TO KEEP shake a stick at… I don’t know why been listening to their music my whole STEPPING UP MY life. Alison Krauss & Union Station— that’s an expression, but it came in PERFORMANCES, what a voice. What a group. What a handy just now. WRITE, RECORD, sound. I also love the way they handle Chelan? Chelan is one of my favorite their careers. Christa Wells—I love the COLLABORATE places! The water is gorgeous, every way she crafts words together. Michael SHOWS WITH shop is charming, the Ruby Theatre is Martin Murphy, Emmylou Harris, Judy perfect… I can’t think of a single thing I OTHER ARTISTS, Collins… It is so difficult to make this a don’t like about Chelan. In fact, I wrote short list. AND TRAVEL a song about Chelan! It’s called “Turn FURTHER. Right”. LCTW: What are some of the highlights of your career so far? TRAVEL MORE. LCTW: You’ve been musically-inclined from a young age. Did your family BJ: Each album release would be at support and encourage that passion? the top of the list. That’s a dream come true every time. I wrote a song a few years ago called BJ: Music is one of those things that has been “Wildfire”, and the (surprise) response to that song constant throughout my life. I’ve always been doing would definitely be up there. Playing in Nashville for the something musical. My mom started teaching me how first time. Two years ago, I went on a mini, solo tour, and to play the piano when I was five or six, I was part of a I had the opportunity to play in some beautiful theaters. children’s choir, I played the piano in a youth group band, My first standing ovation (at the Ruby Theater, actually!). I was in a few musicals, I started taking voice lessons On August 6th, I’m opening for Three Dog Night in New (to help with those musicals), and then in high school York City. While we talk, I haven’t been there yet, but I started writing—as well as taking every music class I that’ll be a highlight and a half. possibly could. I had a lot of opportunities that made it so easy to learn and to pursue music. LCTW: What’s next for you? What are your musical and life goals for after your tour? My family… My mom and dad and brothers and sisters have encouraged and supported me every step BJ: It’s easier to think of the big, bucket list goals than of the way. I couldn’t have chased this dream so far it is to think of the immediate goals sometimes. But without them. what’s next? My next album! My plan is to keep stepping up my performances, write, record, collaborate shows LCTW: What experiences inspired you to pursue with other artists, and travel further. Travel more. And music as a career? after one tour ends, planning begins for the next. This is Plan A. We’ll see where we get. BJ: I’ve wanted to be a musician and an artist for as long as I can remember. I haven’t always been brave As for life goals... I hope to never stop learning. I hope enough to think it was a “realistic” dream (when I was to be brave. I hope to be kind.

new cidery has popped up in the valley: ChelanCraft. As you’re driving down Manson Highway, keep your eye out for a bright blue building across from the camping grounds. Then, stop in to taste some delicious cider. Owners Eric and Cynthia Flynn are new to the cider business. Before ChelanCraft, Cynthia was working for Boeing in a virtual position in Finance. When big companies began to call remote workers back to the office, Boeing followed suit and Cynthia was

told she would have to move back to Everett. Having just built a house in Chelan and daughter starting school, Cynthia decided to quit. Cynthia was brainstorming selfemployment options when Eric suggested a cider business. “But what did we know about cider? Only that we liked to drink it,” Cynthia admitted. “I started an experimental batch which was... interesting.” Cynthia sought training, and found a British cider maker who was giving

Meet Eric + Cynthia

a week-long seminar in Bellingham. She also received guidance from her neighbor, Robert Anderson of Lupine Vineyards, after he offered to let her borrow his equipment.

Today, they offer apple with lemon, a flavor inspired by Cynthia’s mother’s Hungarian baking, in which they often add lemon zest to apple pastries. They will soon offer Ginger Pear, as well.

“He basically held my hand through the whole process and I learned a lot,” Cynthia said. “We never would have made our cidery a reality without Robert.”

So far, Cynthia says business is going well. The majority of people who come into for a tasting end up purchasing a bottle to take home. Once, however, a couple stopped by and were disappointed to find out that ChelanCraft is in fact not a craft store.

They made about 130 gallons, which they blended and carbonated in small batches, perfecting the recipe.

Stop by the cidery and taste it for yourself. They’re located at 806 Manson Highway in Chelan.

JACQUELINE WINSPEAR

During the second world war, in a London shadowed by barrage balloons, bomb shelters and the threat of invasion, within days another, a former Belgian refugee is found murdered. And as Maisie delves deeper into the killings of the dispossessed from the “last war,” a new kind of refugee—an evacuee from London—appears in Maisie’s life. The little girl billeted at Maisie’s home in Kent does not, or cannot, speak, and the authorities do not know who the child belongs to or who might have put her on the “Operation Pied Piper” evacuee train. They know only that her name is Anna.

SQUIRREL of SHAME

A.J. FINN

Anna Fox lives alone, a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (usually Merlot and too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times....and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, a mother, their teenage son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn’t, her world begins to crumble, and its shocking secrets are laid bare. What is real? What is imagined? Who is in danger? Who is in control? In this diabolically gripping thriller, no one, and nothing, is what it seems.

WHERE: Bad Granny Hard Cider, 1681 S Lakeshore Rd, Chelan WHAT: On Cocktail Tuesday, Bad Granny cider made a Cherry On Sipper. You can make it yourself using one and 1/4 ounce Woodruff Resrve and three ounces of Bad Granny Ranier Cherry. Although Bad Granny’s heritage lies in the beautiful orchards of Washington State, her creative genesis found its roots beside her sister product, the Karma Vineyards Methode Champenoise Sparkling Wine. Owners Julie and Bret Pittsinger opened Karma in the fall of 2007, creating the first traditional style champagne in the region. As the brand grew to be one of the favored bubblies the State of Washington, Bret saw an opportunity to partner with his long-term relationships of growers in the Valley that he’s cultivated over several decades. The chemistry between the quality of fruit and the knowledge of the traditional French champagne method created a unique hard cider… and Bad Granny was born!
