This Sunday, September 6 is the final concert in the Manson Summer Nights concert series, and organizers have booked a variety of bands that will perform for a five-hour stretch on Sunday evening.

This end of summer concert will be a benefit event for this region’s fire victims, and a giant rockin’ festival to wrap up the season. Gates open at 3pm, it’s outdoor festival seating—bring your lawn chair or blanket to Leffler Field, the open field between Wells Fargo Bank

And from 7pm to 9pm, it’s Seattle’s Rust On The Rails with Cody Beebe, Tim Snider & Blake Noble. An amazing combination of 4 different PNW bands, well known in their own right. In fact they are some of the best talent the Pacific Northwest has to offer!

Rust on the Rails is something new made familiar; something complicated made simple; a sound occupying a space somewhere between world music, Americans and perhaps a jazz-fusion jam band? Each song contains this multifaceted element, but it lurks behind a Top: Eden Moody from Wenatchee complexion of blues, Bottom: Waterdog from Chelan folk, funk or rock depending on the track. Tim Snider World renowned solo artist, Tim Snider has been playing violin from the age of three. Since then, he’s been around the world countless times sawing that fiddle in what’s construed as “a worldfolk-jazz-pop hybrid that’s aimed at the heart, the brain and the feet.” International demand has Snider occasionally recording parts on the road--it’s impressive that he’s been able to contribute.

Throughout November Sky, you’ll hear virtuostic solos and atmospheric tones blended into the fray with intricacy, tact and emotion (he dances barefoot while playing with Rust on the Rails) that are hard to miss.

Blake Noble Of a class all his own, Australian percussive guitarist Blake Noble attacks his acoustic 12-string axe at the strings, the neck, the body– any part of the instrument that can be used to produce a note or sound–while simultaneously playing a dijeridoo he mastered under the traditional teachings of an Aboriginal elder. The result is a rhythmic polyphony brim full of the outback he grew up in. Before settling down in his adopted home of Seattle, he has spent years touring internationally and collaborating with other high-caliber musicians and building up a dedicated following.

The 2015 live concert series runs strong at Benson Vineyards this week with classic rock hits from The Rumor on Saturday evening, Sept. 5th. And on Sunday it’s local favorite The Kevin Jones Band.

425 Magazine’s Resort Home of the Year Tour

The charm of Chelan brought 425 Magazine to build a resort home in the lake’s Lookout community. Get a little design envy as you tour the home open Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Proceeds from the $5 will benefit the Chelan Valley Food Bank. The Lookout is on Jackrabbit Lane in Chelan.

This building previously housed the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce and is currently owned by the City of Chelan.

SUMMER/FALL HIGHLIGHTS The 2015 summer & fall seasons are quickly filling with events unique to the area and boasting local flavor.

In October, the first two weekends of the month are dedicated to the Lake Chelan Crush Festival. Celebrate the grape harvest and watch the grapes as they tumble through the press and taste the raw juice. Wineries throughout the Chelan Valley have events, dinners and special tastings, October 3-4 and 10-11.

The Manson Summer Nights Concert Series returns with an amazing lineup of artists performing their own new and original music from a variety of genres. The final concert will be this Sunday, September 6, a benefit concert for this region’s fire victims, and a giant rockin’ festival to wrap up the season. This End of Summer Bash features Rust On The Rails, with Eden Moody and Waterdogl From 3pm to 9pm, it’s outdoor festival seating—bring your lawn chair or blanket to Leffler Field, the open field between Wells Fargo Bank and Mountain View Lodge as you come into Manson, just before Wapato Point Parkway. The 6th Annual Mahogany & Merlot Vintage Boat Show is an ‘on-the-water’ boat show and free family-friendly event held October 2-3-4. Classic cars will be showcased on the shore along with Vintage Unlimited Hydroplanes from the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum in Seattle, Vintage Inboard ‘Limited Class’ Hydroplanes, and Antique & Classic Mahogany Runabouts from the Golden Era of pleasure boating. Hydro exhibition races will begin early Saturday morning, plus there’s a classic boat parts swap meet, wine barrel furniture, delicious food booths or enjoy the action from the beer & wine garden.

On September 12th, this area is host to the 14th annual Lake Chelan Shore to Shore Half-Marathon and 10K runs. Presented by the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce, the race benefits Chelan and Manson High School teams and programs, as well as the local chapter of Girls on the Run. The marathon portion of this event has been cancelled due to wildfires burning in this region. A portion of the proceeds from the half-marathon and 10K will go to a fire victims relief fund.

It may appear that the vineyards have taken over the area, but apples are still a huge crop in the valley. On the weekend of October 10-11, celebrate Cider Fest at Orondo Cider Works. It’s fun for the whole family, includes Hard Cider tasting for the grown-ups, music, bounce house and field games for the kids and bin train rides with Farmer Chuck for all.

September 12th, the Lake Chelan Car Club will host the 2015 Car Show at Riverwalk Park. Cost is $20 per car. The fun continues with a public Dance on the Bridge with Loose Change playing, free to the public. Trophies for the Top 10 will be awarded. Chelan: A History Told Through Streets

Chelan’s street names did not wash up on the shore of the lake—they come from the town’s vast history. Robinson St. and Woodin Ave. are not only crossing streets—the people who inspired their names were friends and business partners.

Woodin Ave., Chelan’s main street, is named after some of the earliest settlers. Brothers Alvin and Charles Woodin came to the valley in 1887 with young, adventurous spirits.

Excited by the area’s natural resources, the brothers wrote to their father Lewis, encouraging him to come to Chelan.

After joining his sons, Lewis saw great need for a sawmill.

He wired his business partner Christopher Robinson—who inspired Robinson St.’s name— to close up their business in Minnesota and move the operation to Chelan. After a long journey, the equipment made it to Chelan, without the modern luxury of UPS. The sawmill became the first commercial business enterprise in the valley.

The streets of Chelan have a variety of personalities. Johnson St. is named after Charles Johnson, a Civil War veteran who helped erect Chelan’s first bridge. After losing his wife,

Johnson traveled to the Northwest. In Ellensburg he heard about Chelan before returning home to Waterloo, Iowa.

Johnson was determined to visit Chelan without even seeing the area—perhaps the thought of the lake’s womanly waves filled the empty space in his heart.

Navarre St. is named after Ignatius Navarre, a government surveyor. Navarre’s wife had her piano shipped all the way from Minneapolis when their home was built in Chelan. Many musical evenings were enjoyed in the Navarre’s living room with that well-traveled piano. The Navarre home was on the south shore of the lake. They planted an orchard of fruit trees at the water’s edge and Ignatius called this place “Wild Rose Beach.”

Trow Ave. is named after Charles Trow who sang, “Don’t let your cow run loose on Trow,” to make sure people pronounced his name correctly. He was a man of many trades. During his lifetime, he was a steamboat operator, county auditor, and cashier at the Miner & Merchants Bank. Trow planted soft fruit trees and dried fruit so people could have lightweight food that wouldn’t spoil during long treks in the mountains.

Today, the streets lead us to Chelan’s many attractions, but we must remember that the people who inspired their names paved the way for Chelan’s development.
