Active members of the guild have been working on the event since April. They meet monthly at Wapato Point Cellars for a luncheon and business meeting. “Each volunteer has a specific job assignment throughout the process,” Mary Divine, correspondence secretary, said. “I send out thank you letters to all of our contributors and volunteers. We raise about $15,000 by selling ads that go into our tour booklets and another $15,000 from tickets, art show proceeds, and donations.”
Step Down to ~ The Underground
Founded in 1948 before the first Lake Chelan Community Hospital opened its doors, Guild B began working to provide community-based support for the hospital. A rummage sale held annually for 15 years and other smaller projects made up their early fundraising efforts. In 2000, the guild held its first home tour and raised $4,200 for cancer diagnostics equipment. Tour receipts have continually increased in the following years. In 2004, the guild added an art show at Tsillan Cellars to the event. Twenty-five Northwest artists and craftsmen donated $900 of their profits to the hospital that year.

TURN OF THE LAKE
Dan and Dian Prentice
Larry and Rosie Epstein
In addition to Divine, current Guild B officers are Betty Paulsen, president; Karla Harkins, vice president; Tammy Doherty, recording secretary; and Nancy Parker, treasurer. This year’s tour will feature four homes: Dan and Dian Prentice’s Historic Treature, Larry and Rosie Epstein’s Turn of the Lake, Jeff and Kelly Chambers’s Quail Run, and Dave and Sherry Weitzel’s House on the Hill. The art show and sale at Tsillan Cellars will feature many decorative and unusual items, from inlaid wood and natural stone jewelry to fun purses, according to the tour booklet. Tickets for the home tour are $20 and may be purchased at the Chelan Chamber of Commerce or online at lakechelancommunityhospital.com/ about-us/home-tour, or at any of the featured homes on the day of the tour.
This historic home was built in 1930 and bought by the current owners 20 years ago as a summer home. They have lived here full time since 2002. Throughout the house, look for the original art created for the home by architect/designer Milan Heger and fine interior finishes by Lukas Prochazka who remodeled the home. The spacious open-plan great room faces the lake, with a wall of windows looking out to the spectacular view. One end of the room is a seating area with fireplace and a high
mantelpiece, the other is the dining area with a table for eight to ten and a six-feet long antique bench with spindle back.
With its hillside location off Summit Boulevard, this home commands a sweeping view of Lake Chelan as it turns north on its way to Stehekin.
The kitchen, separated from the dining room by a half-wall counter, is modern with a commercial gas stove, farm sink, white cabinets, and a backsplash of white subway tile. The “theater room” has built-in sound speakers, artwork by Heger, and a glass door leading to the side yard.
The heart of the home is its open-plan living area. The living room, looking out over the deck and the lake, is lined with handsome built-in cabinetry, and a gas fireplace with mantle keeps it cozy in cooler weather. The dining area has its own built-in shelves and cabinets. It is spacious enough for a variety of table configurations. The kitchen features custom wood
QUAIL RUN
finishes, modern appliances, and a decorative backsplash behind the stove. The master suite is airy and comfortable, with the laundry easily accessible. The guest room and bath, along with a cozy den, are at the other end of the house. Taking full advantage of the panoramic lake views, the wide deck extends along the full length of the house.
HOUSE ON THE HILL Dave and Sherry Weitzel
Jeff and Kelly Chambers
If purchasing tickets online, participants should print the receipt and bring it to the tour where it will be exchanged for a ticket at any of the homes. Signs in town will give directions to the featured homes. Donations to the guild are always welcome. For more information, call Paulsen at 509-687-3104.

The Chambers have come to Lake Chelan with their family on summer vacations for 13 years. Their dream was to build their own home in Chelan with room for everyone, so in 2015, the Chambers sold their farm in Nebraska and bought seven acres of property in Manson. They built this handsome Dutch Colonial-style home to accommodate their guests and growing family. This house is designed for entertaining and family gatherings. Guests are welcomed into the great room
with lofty ceilings capped by custom trusses and a 17feet high stone fireplace. Large windows flood the area with light, and you can enjoy fabulous views from every angle. The kitchen is a hostess’s dream, with a large eat-in marble island, two dishwashers, and a farmhouse sink. Note the butcherblock counters in the walk-in pantry. The lower level features a large bar with White Nevada counters, televisions, and shuffle board for a resort-like feeling.
“The best feature of the house is the view,” says Sherry Weitzel of her home perched on the hill overlooking the lake. No one could argue! As you enter, note the artwork to the right. Its neutral shades of slate and dove, chalk and straw are carried throughout the home. Sherry and Dave began coming to Lake Chelan in the 1970s, and bought a condominium here in 1990. As their family grew, they needed more space, and so began “years of searching” until just the right lot became available.
Sherry describes the home as “Texas hill country inspired.” The open concept main area, serene and elegant with modern, clean lines frames, but does not distract from the view. The seating area features a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and a play of different textures: stone, wood, metal, glass, with accents of lime green. Step out on the deck and the swimming pool on the level below is added to the vista of orchards, gardens, and the lake.

TOP 10 JoAnne Strandberg, manager of Chelan’s one-stop shop for all cooking supplies, gives Lake Chelan This Week her top ten list of kitchen essentials. Grab these items while you’re in the area at Culinary Apple, 109 E. Woodin Ave., Chelan.
EDEN MOODY TO PERFORM AT CAMPBELL’S THIS FRIDAY
Eden Moody will play at Campbell’s Resort in downtown Chelan on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. We recently had the chance to ask some questions about her influences, her unique sound, and her new album This is Me. LCTW: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PLAYING MUSIC?
CUTTING BOARD & CHEF KNIFE
“A good cutting board and knife are probably the #1 kitchen essential. When selecting a cutting board, it’s important to make sure it’s knife friendly – Epicurean cutting boards are a great choice because they are also dishwasher safe and made in the USA. A Chef’s Knife is the workhorse in the kitchen. It can be used for a variety of tasks, and if you invest in a high quality, forged knife, it will last a lifetime with proper care.”
RSVP FRUIT FLY TRAP “This may be a little unusual to include on a list of kitchen essentials, but we all know how bad fruit flies can be this time of year, so it made the cut! Most know that cider vinegar with a drop of dish soap in a small bowl will attract and eliminate fruit flies, however, a bowl full of dead bugs on the counter isn’t very appetizing. This Fruit Fly Trap elevates the look of this necessary item.”
BRUSHTECH GRILL BRUSH “This Bristle-Free Grill Brush cleans grease and burnt food from grill grates, and lasts longer than traditional brushes. The design allows for the brush to bend and move to scrape and clean the grill grates quickly and easily. No more worry about bristles coming off of traditional brushes and ending up stuck to grill grates or in the food.”
RSVP HERB SCISSORS “The Herb Scissors have a set of 5 sharp stainless steel blades and allow you to cut, chop and mince a variety of herbs directly into a pan or over a plate. Try it to quickly prep parsley, cilantro, and rosemary. Try rolling up a stack of basil leaves to quickly julienne strips for a beautiful basil garnish. The blade cover doubles as a cleaner, so nothing is left behind.”
WHISKS “Whisks come in many different shapes, sizes and materials. While all whisks are made to combine ingredients or to incorporate air into a mixture, the shape makes a difference depending on the task. The wider, Balloon Whisk is perfect for whipping light ingredients and incorporating air. The Flat Whisk is more suited for sauces, because the shape makes it perfect for scraping up browned bits in shallow pans and smoothing out sauces and gravy. The Spring Coil Whisk is used more like a plunger and makes it great for circulating liquid ingredients like eggs. Whisks are definitely a kitchen essential, and the one you choose may just depend on the job at hand.”
STAY TUNED NEXT WEEK FOR THE REST OF CULINARY APPLE’S RECOMMENDATIONS
EM: I took an interest in learning to play the guitar when I was six. At the time, there was this older 9-year-old boy I knew who played but he was very shy about letting me watch or listen. So I’d spy on him then run back and grab my dad’s guitar and try to copy him. My mom caught on so she taught me how to read chord charts, telling me that if I learned the chords, I could play just about any song I wanted to. So I taught myself. It was one of those things that if you told your mom you were bored, you had a choice to get creative or help her with the chores, so I spent a lot of time learning to play songs I liked and recording tapes to send to my grandparents here in the USA (I lived in Brazil). It wasn’t until I moved here in 2006 that I got any formal music education.
friends’ homes were our gathering place (thus the campfires and jam sessions). Although I did perform in churches upon occasion, my most memorable musical experiences were performing at prisons, detention centers, and such. I was always aware of the power music has to inspire, connect with people, heal hearts and offer a message of hope. Now! When I eventually left that way of life and found myself entering “the real world”, that’s when I started performing music as a means to support my family via busking. I’d get a lot of requests to sing songs by country artists so found myself listening to a lot of Shania Twain, Dixie Chicks, Garth Brooks, and the likes...and that’s what got me into country. I’d say Shania Twain and Dolly Parton along with (in recent years) Zac Brown are huge inspirations. They are who they are and they’re super dynamic, everything I could aspire to be.
LCTW: WHAT IS YOUR SOUND LIKE? LCTW: WAS THERE SOMEONE WHO INSPIRED YOUR MUSIC? EM: This is a difficult question to answer because my upbringing was SO out of the norm. For the most part, I didn’t have any access to or listen to any contemporary music at all (Brazilian, Christian or otherwise)...unless I was at the mall and passed a TV store where MTV was playing or was in the elevator or whatever brazilian music our neighbors played during their backyard bbqs. A lot of the people I grew up with wrote and recorded their own music, which I’m sure was inspired by a lot of the counterculture music of the 60’s and the 70’s that they listened to prior to becoming missionaries. We’d mostly sing/listen to hymns or music that our friends and fellow missionaries created. Almost every week we’d get together and listen to/share songs, jam. SO many campfire sessions doing that. Great memories. Might sound weird, but guess it was like being raised off food grown in your own backyard! That’s what initially inspired me. An example of that is “Una Rosa En El Cielo” that’s on my album. A Spanish song written by a Canadian friend of mine from my Brazil. Anyways, my parents were nondenominational self-supported missionaries and music was a huge part of what I grew up doing, not just in church because ours or our
EM: Zac Brown meets Boyce Avenue and they have a Shania Twain baby!! Ok that’s weird...hmmm... But seriously, the reason I’ve delayed releasing my last album to the mainstream music platforms is because it’s SO different from my first EP which was by every definition Country. Nothing wrong with that, it’s an excellent production and I’m proud of it! However, that’s not what people hear when I perform live - with or without a band. I discovered just how much my sound had evolved when I went to Nashville to record my last album. For example, when I showed up at the studio to record, they had a huge percussion set up but not a single cajon or djembe - which for me is fundamental! It took recording videos of me performing the songs with my percussionist for the team at the studio to understand my style and be able to build on that. Of course, I have to credit my original percussionist Mike Johnstone who really had a huge part in helping me develop my current style.
LCTW: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR
STYLE?
EM: So back to where I was talking about my delay in releasing this album to the
ENTERTAINMENT mainstream...it’s because I needed to find a “box” that my current sound could fit into in order to make it discoverable. It’s not mainstream country. And although it somewhat fits the description of Americana and even a few Folk sub genres, I’ve had a really hard time finding current artists to compare my sound and style to. So I decided to folk it, and call it gypsycountry. But “Gypsy-Country” isn’t a recognized genre yet, soooo my newest album (when it drops on Pandora, Spotify, iTunes and such) will be discoverable as “Indie Gypsy Folk”, “Contemporary Folk”, “Americana”, “Folk Pop”, and such. If they’d let me describe it, I’d say it’s Americana Folk Pop with South American (or “World”) influence because of the subtle or not so subtle Brazilian and South American flair.
LCTW: WHAT’S IT LIKE TO PLAY AT CAMPBELL’S RESORT? EM: It’s like being in a shop window, haha! To some people you’re invisible, some people stop and admire, and some people take me home (via a CD)! It’s not exactly a concert venue but it’s an extremely valuable experience for me as an artist (aside from helping me grow thick skin!) because it’s not just a locals spot. There are people there from all over the U.S. - I’ve
Lake Chelan This Week

11
even met people from other countries, even Brazil! So I know my music is far reaching, especially when those people connect with me via social media or my mailing list - after all, I plan on doing a house concert soon and I need hosts! Anyways, I used to worry when people wouldn’t react after a song, but now I’ve learned to just enjoy myself knowing that if people are chit chatting, that doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t listening. As a matter of fact, the fact they are chit chatting might mean they are REALLY enjoying the vibe.
LCTW: WHAT CAN LISTENERS EXPECT FROM YOUR NEW ALBUM? EM: First of all, honesty. That’s me as an artist without the bells and whistles, very close to the way I’d sound at a concert accompanied by the band of my choice. Each song emerged from a growing experience for me, each song on that album marked a new realization, letting go of something and moving on to some next level per-se in my personal life and feeling so much lighter and free because of it, so I hope that it does the same for them. My hope is that listeners will learn something new about themselves and that we can celebrate that discovery together.
