By Emily Wooldridge For Lake Chelan This Week To ride these ziplines, you have to sign off a waiver for your life. Owner Richard Kelley happily recites the Gladiator quote “nos quisnam se morior te salutant”– those who are about to die we salute you — before he sends you to the Gallows, the final zipline of your tour. It’s one of the fastest in North America, approaching speeds of 60 mph after dropping 880-feet off the face of a cliff.

Once you’ve been “diapered-up” in harnesses by Tunnel Ziplines’ guides and warmed-up on the practice line, you’ll hop on a van to begin your tour with Richard’s commentary that would sink any Jungle Cruise guide’s boat. While you travel across the property, inching closer to your doom, Richard hands the guides, “hitchhikers he picked up this morning,” a roll of duct tape for some last Continued on Page 3

EVENTS minute repairs and warns guests that they have entered “rattlesnake country.” It’s not surprising that Richard is a good storyteller — he was a successful attorney and has published a book, “Deathstroke.” Apparently John Richardson, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor with the Alien and Harry Potter movies on his resume, was interested into developing Richard’s book into a movie. However, Richard’s bark is worse than a snakebite. Tunnel Ziplines’ guides are certified and the ziplines are checked daily and meet ACCT (Association for Challenge Course Technology) standards. “Our most serious injury was a broken nail,” said Collin Delong, a zipline guide and Wenatchee native. Tunnel Ziplines’ only casualty is the occasional cell phone from those unwilling to part with their mobile devices, even after being warned, but these lost souls are usually found in the grass below. With the tour’s personal touches and glimpses into Chelan’s history, you won’t only be contemplating your last will and testament. Richard takes you inside a teacher’s cabin from 1908 that’s the size of a modern walk-in closet where you can appreciate furniture from the time period and the special back door, raised higher than the front door so the teacher could wander outside after a heavy snow. The cabin was preserved and brought to the property by one of the teacher’s former students. “He had learning disabilities and she helped him a lot,” says Loretta Kelley, Richard’s wife and business partner. From a rocky cliff, you’ll get a spectacular view of the Columbia River and a glimpse of the pre-Knapps Hill Tunnel road that Loretta’s great grandfather helped build. The road was often treacherous — pioneers were afraid of losing their wagon (and their cookies) over the cliff while going over a rock they called “the hump.” The view that Richard shares with guests today

is the same that took his breath away in 2010, filling him with a gust of wind that blew him straight into the real estate office. “There’s nothing like sipping a glass of wine here and watching the sunset,” Loretta says. The ziplines didn’t sprout up like trees from the ground, but the land inspired their creation. After spending a day hiking with a friend and discovering more beautiful views after every summit, Richard had a revelation when the tiredness set in — “Wouldn’t it be cool if we could just zip from one cliff to the other?” Plus, Richard and Loretta didn’t want to just sit and wait for their Castle Vineyards to be ready. They took a plunge, similar to the dropped-stomach feeling zipliners get after their feet leave the platform. In the summer of 2012, the Kelleys proudly opened four ziplines and have plans to open four more within the next few years. The property will also feature a winery with a wine tasting castle, a viewing patio looking out over the river, and hiking trails. Continued on Page 9

by Malcolm Brooks In the mid-1950s, America was flush with prosperity and saw an unbroken line of progress clear to the horizon, while the West was still very much wild.
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory by Caitlin Doughty A young mortician goes behind the scenes, unafraid of the gruesome (and fascinating) details of her curious profession.
The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, Even: A Novel by Chris F. Westbury This is a wonderful comic novel, about philosophy, the nature of art, the beauty of the ordinary, and about quirky, complete, night & day victims of obsessivecompulsive disorder.
Us Conductors: A Novel by Sean Michaels In a finely woven series of flashbacks and correspondence, Lev Termen, the Russian scientist, inventor, and spy, tells the story of his life to his “one true love,” Clara Rockmore, the finest theremin player in the world.

Ziplining is no dopey Ferris wheel — “it’s an extreme sport...” After the van tour ride and a short hike, you’ll give three different zips a try, the speed increasing with each ride. This allows you to have a thrill while still having time to take in the amazing views, perhaps even a bear sighting. When faced with the Gallows and the expansive view, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the big things. However, it’s the little things that make Tunnel Ziplines special. A guy from Wenatchee proposed to his wife from the property’s lookout point, the cars have names like Vincent Van Go and Sparky, and a willow goldfinch named Delilah, rescued by Loretta’s granddaughter Madeline, calls Tunnel Ziplines home. Guide Collin was afraid of heights before becoming certified in ziplining — now he feels he has the best summer job. Aaron, an 8-year old from Snohomish, was so terrified before ziplining he considering tinkling over the side of the platform — the vineyard has to get fertilized somehow. With bravery, or the persuasion of a full bladder, Aaron decided to be the first in his family to try the Gallows. When his feet were back on the ground, Aaron had the biggest smile on his face, either from the thrill or the prospect of using Tunnel Ziplines’ Porta Potties that many say are “the cleanest they’ve ever been in.” And if the small things aren’t enough to keep your knees from shaking, keep in mind that an 87-yearold grandma went ziplining recently. “We were more worried about it than she was,” Loretta says. “She just wanted to do it again.”

WINE
Pick of the Week: Rio Vista Winery RIO VISTA CREATES SWEET SUCCESS by Rick Steigmeyer A lot of education goes into making fine wines Apparently, John and Jan Little’sbackground as teachers qualified themfor excellence when they launched theirnew careers at Rio Vista Wines. Rio Vista’s 2013 Antoine Creek Vineyards Viognier was picked as the Best of Show wine at the 2014 NCW Wine Awards. The wonderfully floral and fruity Viognier — judges notes included “Gorgeous aromatics, bright and luscious” — isn’t the only winner for Rio Vista. The winery won Double Gold for its 2013 Riesling and Gold Medals for another three wines. It won five more Silver Medals. John and Jan both retired from teaching in 2004. Jan taught in the Wenatchee School District for 25 years. John taught in Wenatchee Valley College’s carpentry program. He’s also worked as a carpenter and a longtime orchardist. Winemaker/winery owner he counts as his fourth career. “I’m a farmer at heart,” he says about the three acres of grapes in seven varieties he grows along the Columbia River between Chelan and Pateros. Estate grapes make up about 60 percent of what’s used for Rio Vista’s 1,000-case annual production, including those used for his perennial prize-winning Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon. The rest comes from small vineyards located just a few miles away. Grapes for his Best of Show Viognier came from Antoine Creek Vineyards. John said he was relieved that vineyard and his own weren’t damaged during the Carlton Complex Fire that devastated nearby Pateros and surrounding areas this summer. John said he learned his winemaking craft by working closely with some of the region’s best winecrafters — Craig Mitrakul, Ray Sandidge and John Morgan.
The winery’s location is clearly a good one for growing grapes. John expects this year’s extremely warm summer will produce an excellent vintage. Rio Vista’s tasting room and scenic Columbia River park-like setting have also been a hit with visitors who keep the family-run operation busy, especially in good weather months. Rio Vista is the only winery in the state that can be accessed by boat or seaplane, as well as road traveling vehicles. Recreational offerings include boat docks, a swimming area, picnic tables, indoor and outdoor games and a gallery by noted Northwest watercolorist Kerry Siderius, John and Jan’s daughter. Rio Vista’s labels feature her images. This article is reprinted from the September-October, 2014 edition of Foothills Magazine.
