he Historic Downtown Chelan Association (HDCA) will hold their Fourth Annual Sip & Stroll event Saturday, Sept. 23 from 3 to 6 p.m. in downtown Chelan. The event is a chance for participants to relax as they stroll through town and enjoy some of the valley’s finest wines, ales and ciders, plus help fund holiday lighting for downtown Chelan. The event is in it’s fifth year and it a favorite with Chelan locals. “We started this event because we saw an opportunity to bring a fun afternoon to the valley that would share some of Chelan’s great assets – wine, shopping and a sense of community!” said Executive Director of HDCA Jessie Simmons.

Beautiful THINGS for everyday LIVING

In recent years, the HCDA has moved the event from November to September “because we wanted participants to be able to enjoy the beautiful fall weather with their family and friends. It’s a fun afternoon that brings vibrancy to our downtown community space on the day of the event as well as by helping us pay for lighting during the holidays.” Participating in the event are 11 Chelan businesses, each hosting tastings from local wineries, cider houses, or breweries. JoAnne Strandberg, manager of Chelan’s one-stop shop for all cooking supplies, gives Lake Chelan This Week the rest of her top ten list of kitchen essentials. Pick up last week’s copy of LCTW or visit wenatcheeworld.com/lctw to see the other half of the list. Grab these items while you’re in the area at Culinary Apple, 109 E. Woodin Ave., Chelan.

USA PANS SHEET PAN “USA Pans makes several sizes of sheet pans, and each one has its place in the kitchen. You can bake cookies on these pans, but the raised edge makes them perfect for brownies, sheet cakes and roasting a variety of things like vegetables and chicken breasts, as well.”

CHIC WRAP “Plastic wrap is an essential in nearly everyone’s kitchen. Chic Wrap plastic wrap dispensers are sturdy, they look great, and always make a clean cut.”

OXO ANGLED MEASURING CUPS “Every kitchen needs liquid measuring cups. This angled style from OXO lets you read the measurement from the top instead of the side, so there is no overfilling and pouring out the extra. These are available in 1-cup, 2-cup and 4-cup sizes.”

PROGRESSIVE SPIRALIZER “We’re all trying to incorporate more vegetables into our diets. One way to make vegetables more interesting, is to spiralize them. The texture changes, the way we eat them changes, and because of the variety, we enjoy them more! This spiralizer will spiral cut any shaped vegetable and offers 3 different blade choices, so you can customize any dish.”

FINEX CAST IRON “When maintained properly, cast iron is the ultimate nonstick pan. Finex is a company based in Portland, OR, and they have reinvented the design of the typical cast iron pan. The handle is coiled stainless steel, so it stays cool longer. The octagonal shape allows you to pour from any angle, and the polished cooking surface ensures easy release. In addition to its functionality and long-lasting construction, this is a pan that looks so good, you’ll want to leave it out all the time! It’s also made in the USA.”

@lust2wander WHERE: Cairdeas Winery, 3395 WA-150, Chelan WHAT: Barrels being prepped for harvest season WHEN: Open daily 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. Cairdeas Winery, located in Chelan, pulls their inspiration from the Rhône valley of France and crafts delicious wines from Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Counoise, Cinsault (red grapes), and Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul (white grapes) to craft some traditional and truly unique blends. The winery explains the story behind their name saying, “Cairdeas (we say ‘Cardis’) is an ancient Gaelic word meaning friendship, goodwill or alliance. We believe in all three. Good wine should be shared with friends, goodwill spread at every opportunity, and alliances created with those who share our passion.”

THE PERIODIC TABLE OF WINE - SARAH ROWLANDS The Periodic Table of Wine is a fun, concise, and appealingly geeky new concept to wine appreciation. The foundation of the book is a periodic table designed to give a visual overview of how different styles of the world’s wines relate to one another. Beginning with white wines in columns on the left, the table then highlights rose in the middle, and then reds in the columns on the right. The rows, running from top to bottom, are organized by quality of flavor--fruit and spice, green and mineral, sweet, etc. If you like one “element” or wine type in the table, you can discover other examples situated around it you might also enjoy. The book also offers substantial descriptions of the 127 “elements,” or wines, each of which includes a full background and, frequently, food pairings.
