Crushing it: Annual harvest celebration kicks off in Chelan By Rick Steigmeyer

Lake Chelan This Week Saturday, October 1, marks the beginning of two entertaining and educational wine weekends as Lake Chelan wineries celebrate their annual Crush Festival. Harvest is now going strong throughout winegrape country. Wineries are busy as they can be picking, crushing, pressing wines and getting the juice into tanks and barrels to begin fermentation into wine. More than 20 wineries around Lake Chelan for the past several years have turned harvest and crush into one of the region’s most exciting events, marrying crush pad and cellar tours, wine education and often live music and great food. Of course, there will be wine. Finished wine, fermenting wine, grapes of the vine, juice flowing from the press. Some wineries offer a chance to feel grapes burst their skins between your toes. Winemakers eagerly explain the steps that go into crafting their wines, from vineyard practices, harvest timing, the differences of making white versus rosé and red wines and the specifics of fermentation time, temperature and other factors. Cellar tours will offer information about how the wine is aged in stainless steel or various oak barrel treatments before bottled. There will also be plenty of fun, as several of the participating wineries will also have live music for dancing or easy listening. Others will offer barbecues, winemaker dinners, appetizers, chocolates and other treats. The Crush Festival will run through the day on Saturday Oct. 1st and Sunday Oct. 2nd as well as the following weekend, Oct. 8 and 9. This year there will be 21 participating wineries. For more information on what is happening at each winery you can contact the winery directly or visit lakechelanwinevalley.com.

The coach’s boat used for the famed University of Washington row team that earned a gold medal at the 1936 Olympics in Germany will be in Chelan for the Mahogany & Merlot Vintage Boat Show. The boat — or launch — is known as the Conny. It was built for the UW crew team and named for legendary rowing coach Hiram B. Conibear. The Conny spent every morning on Lake Washington leading the UW crew teams with the coach barking orders at his rowers. The boat traveled routinely with the team, loaded with the team’s racing scull. It’s not known definitively if the Conny made the trip to Berlin for the 1936 Olympics. The boat sank in 1971 and was later retrieved and put in storage. The boat was restored in 1998. Daniel James Brown’s best-selling book on the UW crew team, “Boys in the Boat” was turned into a PBS documentary that aired earlier this year.

The Mahogany & Merlot Vintage Boat and Car Event kicks off Friday, September 30, and continues through the weekend. This on-the-water boat show is free for anyone to come and enjoy. The show will feature many returning favorites from last year’s event, including many classic cars as well as vintage unlimited hydroplanes from the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum in Seattle, vintage inboard limited-class hydroplanes, and antique and classic runabouts from the golden era of pleasure boating. This year the event will feature unlimited hydroplanes as part of the exhibition. These wonderful, one of a kind hydroplanes will be paraded around the lake near Don Morse Park in Lake Chelan. They include Miss Wahoo, 1967 Miss Budweiser, Miss Burien, 1955 Miss Thriftway, Oh Boy Oberto, and the newly restored Breathless III, which was restored right here in Chelan. These hydroplanes were built in the late 1950s. Now restored and preserved, they are truly spectacular pieces of craftsmanship. The exhibition will also include an up-close look at 20 vintage inboard limitedclass hydroplanes. These boats run on an automotive engine and are overall smaller than the unlimited hydroplanes. Meticulously restored antique and classic mahogany ChrisCrafts, Centurys, Gar Woods and other makes from the bygone

BOOKS

Good reads Inspired recommendations from Riverwalk Books, Lake Chelan Valley’s Community Bookstore since 1994, located at 116 E. Woodin Avenue, Chelan, and online at riverwalkbooks.com.

Did You Ever Have a Family By Bill Clegg “It has been some time since a book has affected me quite the way this novel has. I was struck by the authentic portrayal of characters that moved beyond the pages and made me see human beings in a whole new way. A tragedy of great proportion sets in motion an unraveling of lives, an examination of what people hold dear, and a recognition of how relationships with those closest are the most important facets of life. I really lived with these characters for the brief time I was reading this book. The writing is beautiful and the mystery at the heart of the book will keep readers riveted. This is the sort of work scholars are referring to when they explain why literature and the novel is so vitally important to our understanding of the human condition.” — Jenny Lyons, The Vermont Bookshop, Middlebury, VT

How to Start a Fire By Lisa Lutz “How to Start a Fire integrates Lutz’s trademark humor, quippy dialog, and quirky characters with a story of three college friends who meet in Santa Cruz in 1993. Readers will fall in love with these three women as they experience failed marriages, career decisions, and other significant life events. Those who are new to Lutz will gobble up this standalone entry and then race to their bookstore to begin reading about the Spellman family in her earlier bestselling series.” — Terry Gilman, Mysterious Galaxy, San Diego, CA

Kitchens of the Great Midwest By J. Ryan Stradal “In the story of Midwestern chef savant Eva Thorvald and the people—and foods—that touch her life, Stradal has created a picture of the American foodie revolution of the past 25 years and of its intersections with class, economics, family, and culture. Along with irresistible characters and stories, this is a novel about the potential that food and cooking offer for joy and empowerment, for snobbery and shame, and for identity and reinvention. Beautifully structured and affectionately and hilariously written, this is a novel that—like Thorvald’s exclusive pop-up supper club—everyone is going to be talking about!” — Jessica Stockton Bagnulo, Greenlight Bookstore, Brooklyn, NY
