Naturally Intoxicating What makes the Lake Chelan American Viticulture Area (AVA) so unique in geological terms is that our soil is relatively young with volcanic pumice on top of a glacially aged scape. It’s the kind of soil vines love to struggle in under the blanket of hot summer days and cool summer nights.

he Chelan AVA is distinguished by a significant “lake effect” that creates mild and favorable temperatures for surrounding areas, resulting in a longer growing season and a reduced risk of frost. You can taste the efficiency of our winter, the quick thaw of spring, our intense summers and a gorgeous harvest in a glass of Lake Chelan AVA wine. Grapes have been grown in the Chelan Valley since before the turn of the 20th century. Today there are nearly 30 wineries and tasting rooms around the lake. Each offers a unique and special experience for wine lovers.

The Lake Chelan Wine Valley features “Sip Syrah” on Saturday, October 14th from 7-9pm. Join winemakers and wine lovers to sip Syrah and Syrah dominant blends from Lake Chelan wineries. The event takes place at Campbell’s Resort. This event will be a great way to sample a range of Syrah wines from multiple producers while you enjoy yummy food pairings. ANTIQUE BOATS TO HIT THE CHELAN WATERS THIS WEEKEND

The Mahogany & Merlot Vintage Boat and Car Event kicks oﬀ Friday, Oct. 6, and continues through the weekend. This on-the-water boat show is free for anyone to come and enjoy. The show will feature many returning favorites from last year’s event, including classic cars as well as vintage unlimited hydroplanes from the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum in Seattle, vintage inboard limited-class hydroplanes, and antique and classic runabouts from the golden era of pleasure boating. This year the event will feature unlimited hydroplanes as part of the exhibition. These wonderful, one of a kind hydroplanes will be paraded around the lake near Don Morse Park in Lake Chelan. They include 1957 Miss Wahoo, 1975 Oh Boy Oberto, 1957 Breathless Too owned by Chelan’s Mitch Evans, the newly restored 1973 Pay’N Pak, and the 1958 Miss Bardahl, which won the 1958 Apple Cup on Lake Chelan with Norm Evans driving and was completely restored recently by The Hydroplane Muse. The exhibition will also include an up-close look at vintage inboard limited-class hydroplanes. These boats run on an automotive engine and are overall smaller than the unlimited hydroplanes. Meticulously restored antique and classic

mahogany Chris-Crafts, Centurys, Gar Woods, and other makes from the bygone era will also be lined up by the docks, along with antique and classic runabouts that will only be on static display for viewers to get an even closer look. Up on the grounds, overlooking the park, the classic car show will feature classic American cars from local collectors. Visitors can take a break from the water to marvel on these classic vehicles. Spectators will also have the opportunity to browse through the Vendor Village. Vintage souvenirs and local artists’ work will be available for purchase. Plus a classic boat parts swap-meet and much more will take place. Be sure to stop by one of the delicious food booths or enjoy the action from the beer and wine garden, featuring Vin du Lac wine and ales from Mac & Jack’s. Mahogany & Merlot is also sponsoring a “Fill Up the Boat with Food” food drive to collect donations for the Lake Chelan Food Drive. Bring by any donation of nonperishable food, personal hygiene items, baby food, pet food, or grocery store gift cards to give back to the Chelan community.
