Enjoy A Small Town
CHRISTMAS By Cindy Salazar
Executive Director of Historic Downtown Chelan Association
A
lthough Chelan is a small town, it’s BIG on ambiance, especially during the holidays. Enjoy A Small Town Christmas in Historic Chelan and discover it for yourself. Downtown twinkles during the holidays as white rooftop lights glitter against the night sky and giant lighted star sprays sparkle on lamp posts. A big multi-colored lighted tree stands in the
center of town and, beside it, Santa’s bright red mailbox reminds little ones to post a message to the North Pole. Merchants deck their windows for the season, each trying to outshine the next as they vie for top prize in downtown’s window decorating contest. The enchanting windows offer a peek of the treasures within, tempting and inviting shoppers to come inside to browse. The first three Saturdays in December are filled with family fun and smiles. The historic Ruby Theatre hosts free holiday matinees each Saturday. Santa invites little ones to join him one evening for cocoa and cookies in Campbell’s lobby, for breakfast one morning at B.C. MacDonald’s, and for photos at Riverwalk Books each Saturday after-

noon. Kids craft graham cracker cottages at The Vogue one morning and handmade gifts for their parents with help from the Story Lady one afternoon. Folks cheer on their favorite restaurant as judges sample their sweet creations in the Holiday Dessert TasteOff. Plus, shoppers complete their holiday gift list easily, finding everything they need at the charming shops, including free gift wrapping at many. All of downtown Chelan’s holiday fun and décor is punctuated by a storybook setting. Beautiful snow capped mountains and the blue water of Lake Chelan add the final touch of holiday ambiance to A Small Town Christmas in Historic Chelan.

They are available at Uncle Tim’s Chelan Rentals & Mountain Cabins Ofice, near Echo Valley Ski Hill, at the bottom of the hill to Echo Ridge. The daily rate for skiers 18 and over is $10 a day at the trail head payable by cash or check. (17 and under ski free). Located just two miles past the Echo Valley Ski Area on Cooper Gulch Road. Note that Sno-Park, Northwest Forest Pass and Golden Age passes are not accepted.
