LAKE CHELAN THIS WEEK
he morning sun had not yet crept out from behind the clouds. Several passengers sat waiting dockside, eagerly anticipating boarding their designated vessel for the journey to Stehekin. Finally announcements came that it was time to board The Lady Cat. The Lake Chelan Boat Company has three different boats currently in operation, offering a variety of layovers to accommodate everyone’s needs. The co-captain gives us a quick run-down of safety precautions, and hands out paper bags of miniature doughnuts to everyone on board. The Lady Cat glides across the water at an impressive speed,
as water sprays along the sides at nearly eye level. After about fifteen minutes the boat arrives at Field’s Point Landing, and several other passengers join in on the expedition. After leaving the landing there is about another hour of boating across Lake Chelan before reaching Stehekin. On the way up lake, the boat passes by many houses and cabins dotting the shores of the water, only accessible by boat. The isolated and naturally stunning landscape make for a peaceful and serene place to call home. The boat docks at the Stehekin port, and everyone aboard disperses onto land ready to engulf themselves in the adventure that
awaits. The first stop is The Stehekin Log Office, where you can find rentals and information on just about anything Stehekin has to offer. The Polaris Ranger is a great choice for getting around, making it possible to see almost everything within the time frame of the layover. The clear, blue water that surrounds the land is actually glacier run-off, giving it its captivating shade of blue. If you are someone who likes to fish, Stehekin is the perfect getaway. There is a plentiful variety of fish within the Stehekin River, from rainbow to cutthroat trout. There are also guided fishing tours available, and dinner floats, which

offer fishing expeditions with full meals hosted on the sandbar. The community of Stehekin is rather small, with about 80 or so people residing there year-round. The locals are friendly, and everyone waves as they pass each other on the winding,
wooded dirt roads. One of the absolute musts in Stehekin is stopping at the Stehekin Pastry Company. As soon as you walk through the doors of the bakery, the smell of fresh baked bread, quiche and cinnamon rolls wafts over you with its heavenly aroma. The Stehekin Pastry Company was started in 1989, and the current owners also own Stehekin Outfitters and rent out a few cabins that sit behind the Stehekin Pastry Company. If you are looking for overnight accommodations, the Stehekin Valley Ranch has everything a person could need on their journey. Within the Stehekin Valley Ranch are a multitude of cabins, from rustic “glamping” style cabins to family-size cabins with full washroom amenities. There is also a dining hall, where coffee roasts next to an open fire and hot meals are served to guests as part of the accommodation package. There is also a lovely gift shop connected to the dining hall. The Stehekin Valley Ranch is definitely worth a visit, even

if you won’t have the opportunity to stay the night. There is an abundance of natural beauty in every direction you look in Stehekin. Some of the most beautiful viewpoints are Boulder Creek, High Bridge, and the iconic Rainbow Falls waterfall. Boulder Creek is a fast moving creek running through the Stehekin River, where you can at times witness huge boulders tumbling downstream jolted by the velocity of the current. High Bridge is the point where Stehekin connects to the Pacific Crest Trail, and it offers a remarkable view of the water cascading through a vein of evergreens. You can stand on High Bridge and gaze out at the amazing views while wondering how far you would make it on the trail. Rainbow Falls is something everyone must see when visiting Stehekin. The waterfall is a massive 392 feet tall, and more often than not, rainbows are visible as you stand below. You can walk right up to the waterfall, protected by a barrier, and leave completely soaked from the

spray from the falls. If you want to experience some of the local splendor, be sure to stop by The Old Stehekin Schoolhouse and take a look into the past. Walking into the Old Schoolhouse is like stepping back in time, as everything seems untouched since it was left. In the back room there are many interesting historical photos and information lining the walls so you want to brush up on the history. Another great place to stop is The Garden, which offers a variety of handmade goods, such as homemade health and wellness products, photo prints, produce and much more. It is however cash only, so do be prepared. If you haven’t yet had a chance to visit Stehekin, now would be the perfect time to book a weekend trip. There are plenty of things to do in Stehekin and it is truly a hidden gem, and an escape from the chaos of everyday life. Things move a little slower up here – and that’s okay, in fact, that’s how it should be.

he Lake Chelan Boat Company, which operates the fleet of boats that run between Chelan and Stehekin, has added a new option this year that will enable guests to spend up to six hours in Stehekin. The company is operating three boats this season: The Lady of the Lake, the Lady Cat and the Lady Express. The Lady of the Lake offers a leisurely cruise up lake every Sunday. Cruise time is four hours each way. The Lady Express makes a two-and-one-half hour trip one way every day of the week. The Lady Cat makes the trip in one-and-a-half hours, providing a six-hour layover on Fridays and Saturdays. There are also options for three hour and four-and-a-half hour layovers Fridays and Saturdays by traveling on the Lady Cat one direction and the Lady Express the other. It is possible to shorten the Lady Express and Lady of the Lake trips by beginning and ending your voy-

age at Fields Point Landing, which is located about 30 minutes from downtown Chelan. The Lady Express and the Lady of the Lake also stop at Lucerne (the port for Holden Village) and can stop at Prince Creek, a boat-in campground, with reservations. In addition, the Lady of the Lake can stop at Moore Point, another boatin campground, with reservations. There are backpacking possibilities leaving from either of these campgrounds. Holden Village is
closed to visitors this season due to COVID-19. According to Lake Chelan Boat Company Customer Experience Director Krissa Jester passenger numbers have remained pretty strong this season. Jester said that there are many returning guests who come every year and are continuing this year. Stehekin is a great “nearby getaway for residents of the Chelan area. Whichever boat you take, the cruise will take you along the span
of the 50.5 mile Lake Chelan, which at a maximum depth of 1,486 feet is one of the three deepest lakes in the United States. The journey starts in the arid, orchard areas of Chelan, and ends in the heart of the Cascade Mountains. Along the way, passengers can view gradual changes in the surrounding landscape. Lake Chelan Boat Company has a long history. Commercial boats started traversing Lake Chelan in 1889. The original Lady of the Lake was built in 1900 and ran the lake until 1915. The second Lady of the Lake originally served on Lake Roosevelt and was purchased by the Lake Chelan Boat Company in 1944. This boat retired from daily summer runs in 1976, when the Lady of the Lake II was acquired. It continued to provide charter runs and winter services until 1990. The Lake Chelan Boat Company donated the Lady of the Lake pilot house to the Lake Chelan Historical Society, which raised money to
