Wenatchee wenatchee.org T

he smell of apple blossoms in the spring, the feel of the sun against your skin, the sound of rushing water as you stroll the waterfront parks and paths along the mighty Columbia River — these things sum up the Wenatchee Valley. You could spend a full day in the historic downtown alone, exploring the shops, restaurants, wine bars and pubs you will find there. Want to head out to Bavarian Leavenworth and the amazing Lake Chelan for the day? With Wenatchee as your base, you’re closer than your daily commute. Wenatchee has the best trail systems in all of Central Washington. Bring your wheels or rent them and spend the day exploring miles of paved paths, or hike the Wenatchee Foothills Trails — a collection of wellmaintained trails just 3 miles from downtown that cross huge land preserves on the city’s western edge. When it’s time to celebrate and eat, Wenatchee doesn’t disappoint. The valley has a huge roster of restaurants, including the best Mexican food scene in the state, from taco trucks to sit-down restaurants.

about Wenatchee S

unset Magazine: 20 Western Dream Towns in its Best Places to Live 2017 Forbes Magazine: 25 Best Places to Retire in 2017: “Scenic, sunny Columbia River city … on the very dry side of the Cascade Mountain Range.” Northwest Travel & Life: “The Wenatchee Valley has developed a burgeoning food and wine scene, a fitting place for Washington’s second largest public market.” New York Times: “Wenatchee, the epicenter of Washington’s apple industry.” AAA Travel Guide: “A prime area for all-year recreation, from hiking in summer to skiing in winter.”

Wenatchee

A great base for exploring K

nown as the Apple Capital of the World, Wenatchee is a commercial, shopping, hotel, entertainment and dining center midway between Seattle and Spokane. The metro Wenatchee area spans the Columbia River and is a great base for exploring the town or surrounding region. Check out the North Central Washington orchards, go hiking in the forests or coulees, or take a joyride down the winding, scenic roads that snake through the Cascades. Twenty-two miles to the west, Leavenworth invokes Bavarian-style architecture, music and culture. Even closer still, Cashmere, 12 miles west, boasts an eclectic shopping district and is home to the world-famous Aplets and Cotlets candy factory. Just 45 miles to the north, 55-mile-long Lake Chelan is an oasis of sun and water. Water sports, hiking and relaxing on the beach are just a few of the things you can do there.

A kayaker floats down the Columbia River underneath the Wenatchee pedestrian bridge.

Family members Michelle, Louie, and their daughter Cara Lee, 10, Kirkland, wander through a Stutzman Ranch peach orchard on Easy Street near Wenatchee, picking from trees. Floyd and Betsy Stutzman operate one of the few U-Pick orchards in the Wenatchee Valley.

atch a ride on the miniature railroad at Wenatchee’s Riverfront Park. The Wenatchee Riverfront Railway is the only 10 inch gauge railway in the U.S. that’s open to the public. The diminutive train track, complete with pint-sized train and cute train station, costs $2 to ride and is open on select days throughout the year. The Wenatchee First Fridays Art Walk is a great way to explore downtown while checking out the local art scene. Visit the work of artists in shops, galleries and restaurants. Up for some swimming on a warm summer day? Wenatchee’s Walla Walla Point Park and Confluence State Park both have float-lined areas where you can safely swim in the Columbia. There are even beaches for you to picnic or stroll the riverside. There are no lifeguards on duty, so play it safe in the water. Playgrounds, restrooms and drinking water are also available. Both parks are on the Loop Trail. Hike Mission Ridge to the Bomber Bowl. One of the most popular runs at Mission Ridge Ski & Board, Bomber Bowl gets its name from the devastating crash of a B-24 bomber in 1944. The crash landed about 500 feet below the summit, killing all six crewmen and strewing the area with wreckage. Years later, a monument was created from a wing of the plane and is located just uphill from the original crash site. If you are wanting a peaceful day outdoors, grab a blanket and head to Ohme Gardens for an afternoon picnic. There is something ethereal about Ohme. The alpine oasis overlooks the Columbia River on the north edge of Wenatchee and is full of stony paths that twist and turn through the highcountry trees. You’ll find stone-slab benches to rest on — looking almost as if they have grown from the ridgetop on their own — as well as ponds, streams and waterfalls.

he city of East Wenatchee is drier than Wenatchee, and is built into a shrub-steppe hillside that looks out across the Columbia towards Saddle Rock and the Cascades. It is home to the biggest indoor mall in the Wenatchee Valley, tasty restaurants and lots of nearby golf. Miss Veedol, the Bellanca Skyrocket that crash-landed near the city in 1931 after becoming the first airplane to

I

n 1929, Herman Ohme purchased the land that would eventually be dubbed the Ohme Gardens. Originally intended to be an orchard, Herman and his wife were inspired by the breathtaking views of the Wenatchee Valley and Cascade Mountains that the craggy bluff offered and created the beautiful alpine escape we see today. The work was done over many long years, largely by hand, and is a true masterpiece of hard work, love and devotion. The Gardens are a visitor favorite known for their shady stone pathways, towering firs and cedars, firepits, ponds and wildflower strewn, grassy areas. The gardens are open daily from April 15 through Oct. 15.

You can eat and shop at the market’s many stores and restaurants morning and night. The market is a community meeting place, filled with weekend art shows, live music and fundraisers. There is even a piano available to play. The Loop Trail is right by the market and on the shoreline of the Columbia River. Head north past the Market osprey nest situated on a tall pole, and check out the parks and public art. Or, if you are feeling up to it, rent a bike and do the full loop — it will take about an hour. Afterward, check out historic downtown Wenatchee. Downtown is full of restaurants, pubs, cute cafes and ice cream parlors, quirky shops, public sculptures, the Numerica Performing Arts Center and the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center. What they said “The building is breathtaking, the local farmers, restaurants and artisanal food producers it hosts are uniformly superb, and its location on the banks of the

Columbia River is stunning.”

“The Pybus Market has far more to offer than a location to buy your weekly supply of groceries. It is a historical destination where you can shop, dine, relax, bike on the river, meet friends, bring visitors, listen to music, and host your event or wedding -- but most of all, it’s a place to connect with passionate artisans, inventive food retailers and Wenatchee’s creative community.”

The trails are well-maintained and offer sweeping views of the city and Columbia River. Here are two of the most popular: Saddle Rock Gateway A local favorite, the Saddle Rock trailhead provides great access to Saddle Rock, an iconic city landmark. The trailhead has plenty of amenities, including more than 80 parking spaces, and connects with two trails — the main trail (1.3 miles from trailhead to Saddle Rock’s peak), and the east trail (1.75 miles from trailhead to peak). The Horse Lake Road Trailhead Horse Lake is a 1,500 acre reserve dedicated to conservation and wildlife habitat. he Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail — or just the Loop — is 11 miles of paved path that laces the shoreline of the Columbia River, snaking through parks and over three bridges. The views are beautiful. It is Wenatchee Valley’s best-loved trail. Pick your path On the Wenatchee side of the path you will find shade

and green grass. On the east side near the Odabashian Bridge, however, shrubsteppe and a beautiful view of the Cascades await. History The Pipeline Pedestrian Bridge, built in 1908, was the first bridge to span the Columbia River. Trees shade the trail near the bridge’s east end and Hale Park’s off-leash dog park is on the west end.

The Wenatchee World Visitor Guide | Spring & Summer 2020

Waterville watervillewa.org

S

ituated on a high plateau, Waterville is a wheat farming community imbued with all the quiet ambience of small-town America. The town’s biggest event of the year is the North Central Washington Fair. Founded in 1889, the event was originally known as the Waterville Potato Carnival. The name has since changed, but the NCW Fair still embodies everything you’d expect from a county fair. Music, entertainment, food, rodeo and farm animals dominate the event, while other scheduled items — like the Beer Garden and Latino Day — help to add flavor and flair. This year the fair will run from Wednesday August 26th through Sunday August 30th.

The Wenatchee World Visitor Guide | Spring & Summer 2020

continued from page 45 Waterville is a great jumping-off point for exploring the region. Situated on the Ice Age Floods geological trail, a short drive north will earn you a glimpse of numerous erratics — house-sized boulders dropped by an Ice Age sheet. Look for an amazing collection of erratics on the eye-popping drive through McNeil Canyon Road towards Chelan. Head east on Highway 2 for a view of an historic hillside sentinel — the lovely, gleaming St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Journey further east and you will arrive at the dramatic Dry Falls State Park. Then turn right and continue south on Highway 17 to take in the beautiful, drive along the edge of the Chain Lakes, south to Soap Lake. From there, turn left and head north about 30 miles to Grand Coulee Dam.

World photo/Don Seabrook

Visit Dry Falls The largest waterfall known on the earth once cascaded over the sheer basalt cliffs of Dry Falls. These days, the falls themselves are … well … dry, but they still offer plenty of beauty and history to soak in. The 400-foot-high, 3.5-mile-long precipice dried up about 15,000 years ago, but in its prime it was ten times the size of Niagara Falls. The Dry Falls were formed during the massive Ice Age floods that coursed through the Columbia Basin. When the glacial dams crumbled, deep rivers of water crashed over the scalloped edges of the falls at 65 mph. It was this colossal flood that eventually carved out the Channeled Scablands. Today, visitors can stand at the edge of the falls or check out the nearby interpretive center to learn about cataclysmic flooding and oozing magma.

Beef Judge Brianna Buseman, a graduate student at the University of Idaho, keeps a keen eye on 4-H children and their cows in the fitting and showing competition at the NCW Fair. In Waterville, the fair takes place from Aug. 26-30 in 2020.

T

ucked into the mountains just outside of Wenatchee, Cashmere is a charming orchard town. Check out one of its many antique stores, ride the white waters of the Wenatchee river, zoom down Devil’s Gulch — known as one of the best mountain biking trails in the state — or take a tour and snag some samples at the Aplets and Cotlets candy factory. You can also catch the Chelan County Fair and the Wenatchee River Bluegrass Festival when they come through town. At the Cashmere Museum and Pioneer Village, you can find one of the finest collections of Native American and archaeological artifacts in the Northwest. The Pioneer Village — a small section of land with 20 original pioneer buildings filled with authentic furniture and tools — is worth the trip on its own. Looking for more? Don’t forget to take time to walk the quaint downtown, or check out the 9/11 Spirit of America Memorial Riverside Park.

Whitewater rafting Wenatchee River

A

ccording to Wenatchee Outdoors, the short stretch of the Wenatchee River between Leavenworth and Cashmere is “one of the most popular whitewater runs in the state.” The stretch features stunning, scenic views of the surrounding Wenatchee Valley orchards, Class 2 and 3 rapids, quick shuttling, and easy access to the river. Combine that with the warm sunshine found during the spring melt-off season, and you have a recipe for a world-class run. Many professional rafting companies can be found in the area — more than a dozen each year. They run the river for the entire spring season, and will feed you and bus you back to where you started. To find them, check outdoor stores and local listings in the Wenatchee and upper Wenatchee Valley communities, including the Leavenworth area.

Leavenworth leavenworth.org “A burgeoning winery scene has brought a Pinot-and-brie refinement to the brats-and-brews style of this Bavarian-inspired village, just east of the Cascades.” — National Geographic Adventure magazine

estled within the Cascades is a portal into another world. Step through and you will find yourself in a small village that belongs not in the Northwestern United States, but rather somewhere within the mountains of southern Germany. There is no literal portal in Leavenworth of course, but you will certainly feel as if you have walked through one the moment you enter this Bavarian-style Village. In the early 1960s, Leavenworth was no more than a run-down mill town on the verge of becoming a ghost town. Rather than sit back and accept their fate, the town leaders came up with a plan — to harness the power of

the town’s beautiful, alpine location and draw in tourists from around the globe. The “little village that could” now greets hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. There’s almost never a weekend without entertainment of some sort — the town has more than two dozen public festivals each year — and if you happen to visit on a day that isn’t filled with festivity, there is still more than enough to keep you occupied. Things to do Travel westward on Highway 2 and you will find plenty of fruit stands and wineries. Smallwood’s Harvest in nearby Peshastin offers a huge petting zoo, a gift shop and fruit stand, and is a must-stop for anyone with kids in tow. Just down the road, Prey’s Fruit Stand is also worth a visit. For a bit more adventure, take a ride on the whitewater of the Wenatchee River, or watch

The dam is a good spot to see kayakers and leaping salmon. If you are interested in rafting, you can find a list of rafting companies on the Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce website: leavenworth.org. To the north, Lake Wenatchee’s sparkling waters are perfect for an afternoon of windsurfing or resting on the shore for a picnic. To the south, the Alpine Lakes Wilderness is the perfect for a daytime hike. Grab a permit at the trailhead, or check in with the U.S. Forest Service in Leavenworth for an overnight permit. If you are looking for something tamer, an easy stroll along Icicle Creek at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery is also a great choice. The hatchery releases 1.6 million salmon each year to make the 500-mile journey back to the Pacific Ocean. It is open year-round and offers tours, fish and wildlife viewing, and picnic grounds.

The Wenatchee World Visitor Guide | Spring & Summer 2020 Nutcracker Museum nutcrackermuseum.com If you are interested in all things nutty, you won’t want to miss the Nutcracker Museum in downtown Leavenworth. The museum, which has been featured on network television and newspapers across the U.S. and Europe, is all it’s cracked up to be. This quirky museum features informational exhibits such as top five ways to crack a nut, nutcracker themed activities for children and contains over 7,000 nutcrackers originating from over 50 countries. If you are in the area, make sure to drop by during Nutcracker Day, April 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Icy art sleepinglady.com The sparkling glass of the Chihuly Icicles at Leavenworth’s Sleeping Lady Resort looks more like a natural collection of hoarfrost than a sculpture -- albeit in gigantic proportions. The piece is a 1,200-piece outdoor installation created by one of the world’s top glass artists and stands just outside the Sleeping Lady Chapel. Dale Chihuly and his team of glassblowers assembled the 12-foothigh masterwork during the 1996 holiday season. More hikes Icicle Gorge Trail, near Leavenworth: This easily accessible trail is perfect for beginners and families. Mostly flat, the 4-mile trail loops around Icicle Creek, crossing at the scenic Icicle Gorge. You can find it about 16 miles up Icicle Road from Leavenworth. Penstock Pipeline Trail, near Leavenworth: The trailhead for this one is a bit unusual — right on top of an old, historic bridge. The trail itself is an easy hike with an unusual start over an historic bridge that crosses the Wenatchee River. If you are lucky, you may spot Coho salmon spawning in the waters below. The three-mile, backand-forth hike offers great views and fabulous fall colors along the river, and access to some good beaches if the weather is still hot enough for a dip.

Columbia Basin tourgrantcounty.com

T

here are a wealth of things to do in the Columbia Basin. The region is an agricultural powerhouse, framed by mountains and veined with winding rivers. Dams are the life support of the Basin, bringing much needed water to crops and — along with the region’s many wind farms — providing a low-cost power source that serves clients around the world.

More than 670,000 acres of the Columbia Basin are irrigated, and the region is known for growing fruit, onions, beans, potatoes and more. Catch a concert at the Gorge: Considered one of the “most scenic concert venues in the world,” according to Tour Grant County’s website, the Gorge Amphitheatre plays host to world-renowned performers — and of course, spectacular views. the lip of the Columbia River, it is a concert venue like no other, with seating for 20,000 and breathtaking views of sheer basalt cliffs. Attend Farmer Consumer Awareness Day: Head to Quincy the second Saturday in September for the annual Farmer Consumer Awareness Day and enjoy live entertainment, arts and crafts, a cook-off and local delicacies, among many other things.

Check out Ancient Lake Falls near Quincy: The Ancient Lakes Loop Trail is a popular hiking spot for adventurers. The 4.6 miles of trail is set in a dramatic landscape of deep coulees and volcanic buttes. At the end of your hike, you will be rewarded by a desert oasis — the Ancient Lakes and Falls. The area is also a perfect spot for mountain biking, fishing, horseback riding and hunting.

The Wenatchee World Visitor Guide | Spring & Summer 2020 Take a mud bath on the shores of Soap Lake: The mineral-rich water of Soap Lake has drawn tourists since the early 1900s for its reported medicinal properties. It is said that rival tribes would call a truce when visiting the area to bathe. While you may not have to call a truce with other swimmers, you can still enjoy a rejuvenating dip or lather yourself in frothy mud. Get up close with a giant wind turbine: Chances are, you’ve seen wind farms while driving through Washington State, but you may not realize just how big those turbines really are. If you visit Wild Horse Renewable Energy Center on Whiskey Dick Mountain, you will have a chance to get up close and personal with some of the best clean, renewable energy producers around. Sip a little wine: Washington is known for its wine, and Grant County produces some of the best of it. If you are into wine, you won’t want to miss the Jones of Washington tasting room in Quincy — or any of the other wineries and microbreweries located throughout the region. Hang 10 on the surfing simulator: Moses Lake’s Surf ‘n’ Slide Water Park, with its surfing simulator, two 200-foot-long water slides, and 300-foot Lazy

David Long, of Seattle, rubs mud all over his body while on the south shore of Soap Lake. People flock from all around the world to experience the healing powers of the lake's water, which contains high concentrations of minerals. River is a must visit for any water lover. Live the island life at Crescent Bar: At Crescent Bar you’ll find a resort, golf, tennis, fishing and water sports. Camping is also available on the shores of the Columbia.. Check out the stampeding metal ponies: Wild Horse Monument sits on the crest of a hill roughly two miles east of the Vantage Bridge. Known as “Grandfather Cuts Loose the Ponies,” the collection of sculptures is visible from the freeway, but curious visitors can also take a quarter-mile hike to view the ponies up close. Wanapum Heritage Center: Located next to

Priest Rapids Dam about five miles south of Mattawa, the Heritage Centerteaches visitors about the history and culture of the Wanapun people. Lake Lenore Caves: Explore the shallow caves

on the shores of Lenore Lake and just north of Soap Lakes above Highway 17. Ephrata’s Sage-N-Sun Festival: If you are visiting Grant County on the second weekend of June, the SageN-Sun Festival promises a good time. The familyfriendly event features activities, parades, live music, and good food. Ginko Petrified Forest State Park: Check out the petrified wood — Washington’s official state gem — at Ginko Petrified Forest State Park. The park is known for its rare, fossilized Ginko trees and features more than 30 varieties of petrified wood. The Feathers: Watch rock climbers scale otherworldly basalt columns at the Feathers, a popular rock-climbing spot west of George near the rim of Frenchman Coulee.

Lake Chelan lakechelan.com T

here’s no place quite like Lake Chelan. Sparkling waters. Award-winning wineries. A quaint yet elegant downtown. Seemingly endless options for outdoor recreation. Surrounded by the rugged Cascades and capped by over 300 days of sunny skies, Lake Chelan is one of Washington’s best summer

beach towns. With all this beauty to take in, you might not want to go home. Known as “tsill-anne,” or “deep-water” by local Native American tribes, Lake Chelan is the third-deepest lake in North America. It is the perfect place to go boating, swimming, or fishing. You can also hike, bike or sun-bathe along the lake’s edge. Downtown,

you can stroll past Chelan’s many restaurants, bars and shops. Don Morse Park is an easy walking distance from downtown, and is among the most popular spots on the lake. The park’s 2,000 feet of waterfront and sandy beaches is a great place to buy a snack, rent a boat, play volleyball or take your kids to the playground.

The Wenatchee World Visitor Guide | Spring & Summer 2020 Chelan Riverwalk Park, just off downtown, has a mile-long scenic loop trail and is an easyway to get to the Woodin Avenue Bridge that crosses the Chelan River by historic Campbell’s Resort. There, you’ll also find part of the original Lady of the Lake ferryboat. At 60 years old, the 65-foot-long Lady was salvaged in 2001 and restored seven years later. Her pilot house — complete with captain’s wheel — sits at the edge of the park as a monument, gazing out across the lake she once patrolled. Other things to do around Lake Chelan Find your favorite fruit: Orchards of world-class treefruit speckle the slopes of Lake Chelan. Stop by any of the numerous fruit stands around the lake to taste their produce. Test your courage at Slidewaters: Zip down the thrilling Purple Haze water slide. Float on Lazy River. Splash around in the kid-friendly Aqua Zoo. There is a lot of fun to be had in this popular water park. See slidewaterswaterpark.com. Bay watch: Hang out by the bay and take a leap off the swimming dock at Manson Bay Park. Don’t feel like swimming? Plenty of eateries can be found along Manson’s quaint main street. Try your luck: Located in Manson, the Mill Bay Casino is a hot-spot for gambling and offers slot machines, card and table games, and big-name concerts, dancing and dining. See colvillecasinos.com. Outdoors: The options for outdoor recreation around Lake Chelan are nearly limitless. Hiking, biking or various water sports are obvious choices. You can also check out the nearby Beebe Springs Natural Area — a birdwatcher’s oasis with trails through desert scrub and rugged rocky hillsides.

Okanogan County wwrld.us/okanogan

W

hile Okanogan County is the largest county in Washington state, its population stats are a bit underwhelming. The county, which sits at 5,268 square miles, has just under 8 people for each of those miles — compared with the statewide average of more than 100 per square mile.

Brewster and Pateros

These twin cities on the Columbia River are a fishing mecca. Steelheaders flock to Pateros to fish at the mouth of the Methow River, and to Brewster for the salmon returns. Beyond fishing, the nearby Gamble Sands Golf Course is one of the best new courses in the nation, according to Golf Digest magazine. Brewster’s Fourth of July celebration, which includes a parade and fireworks on the Columbia River, is also worth a look. In Pateros the annual Apple Pie Jamboree on the third weekend of July is a great chance to pick up a slice of pie while soaking in the local scene. Just north of Brewster, stop by the Fort Okanogan Interpretive Center for a great way to spend an afternoon. Built in 1911, the center was originally an American fur trading outpost in Washington State. It has since been given back to the Colville Tribes, who redid many of the displays to offer more insight from a tribal perspective. The center hosts different events and exhibits, found on its Facebook page.

Okanogan

Okanogan’s iconic county courthouse is almost castle-like, and around town, you may spot billboards featuring photographs by Japanese immigrant Frank Matsura of turn-ofthe-century pioneers and American Indians. The Okanogan County Historical Museum has hundreds more early photos, along Page 75 with a building full of historical displays. The town also hosts the annual Okanogan Days on the first Saturday in June, and the Okanogan Harvest Festival on the first Saturday in October.

Omak Okanogan County’s largest town also holds its largest event, the Omak Stampede & World Famous Suicide Race, on Aug. 13-16. The Stampede fills an entire weekend with western-style entertainment, including a world-class rodeo, Indian Encampment and Pow Wow, and a Western and Native art show. The suicide race is a horse race in which riders speed from the starting line down the bluff to river. From there they swim or wade across, and then gallop to the finish line. In the off-season, the Stampede arena is home to the Mexican and junior rodeo. Learn more at omakstampede.org.

Conconully

Two large reservoirs border Conconully, making it the perfect spot for fishermen to try their luck. The lakes are filled with rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and even some kokanee salmon in the lower lake.

Tonasket

Tonasket kicks off summer each year with its annual Founders Day Wild Wild West Weekend, an event that includes a rodeo, soap box derby, parade, car show, and more. Founders Day takes place on the weekend after Memorial Day. Various other events are scheduled throughout the summer. Between the town’s chamber of commerce and its Community Cultural Center, there are enough events to cover nearly every weekend. And if you are there midweek? Tonasket’s art walk, featuring work by local artists at 20 venues in a fourblock radius, is worth checking out.

Oroville

Lake Osoyoos, an 14-mile lake that lies across the Canadian border, is known for its warm water and attracts water skiers, swimmers, fishermen and boaters. To the southeast, the Stonerose Interpretive Center and Eocene Fossil Site, located in Republic, is a fun place to dig for fossils and learn about history. Methow Valley

winthropwashington.com twispinfo.com Winthrop Take a trip back in time as you enter Winthrop, a small town preserved to look like the wild west and located at the northern end of the Methow Valley. Winthrop’s rustic downtown features wooden sidewalks and the throw-back storefronts of shops and restaurants. Nearby, you can swap your cowboy boots for hiking boots and adventure along more than 120 miles of trails. The trails and 11 trailheads are free to use in the summer. Learn more at methowtrails.com.

Mazama Tucked away in the upper-end of Methow Valley and buried within the rugged cascades, Mazama is a remote, pine-scented town full of charm and perfect for exploration. Go for mountain hikes, take a horseback ride through the Cascades or enjoy any of the other myriad of activities offered in the area, including hot air ballooning, rafting, bird-watching, and golfing.

Twisp Situated in the heart of Methow Valley, Twisp is a vacation destination popular among tourists. It is also where the locals do business, take care of chores and take part in the arts. Visit the beautiful Riverside Park or check out the art exhibits at Confluence Gallery. Downtown, the Merc Playhouse puts on large-scale theatrical productions, as well as provides space for music, lectures and dance performances. TwispWorks, a newer addition to the town, is another worthwhile place to check out.
