I

t’s a toss-up which geographic feature — Columbia River to the east, Cascade mountains to the west — Wenatchee

residents love the most. Almost every day, residents face the delightful dilemma of whether to huff-and-puff up iconic Saddle Rock, run the Foothills Trails system, bike the Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail, boat and fish the area’s rivers and lakes or trek from backcountry trailheads just a few miles from town. The choice of where to relax can also pose a pleasurable predicament. Maybe Pybus Public Market,

Ohme Gardens A green, cool spot high above the Columbia River and Wenatchee Ohme Gardens, sitting on a cliff above the

Columbia River at Wenatchee, is a shady green spot of alpine park. Its history dates to 1929 when Herman and Ruth Ohme began converting the 9-acre spot into a garden oasis with winding stone pathways, benches, firepits, ponds and grassy areas great for stretching out and a little relaxation. The gardens are open daily from April 15 through Oct. 15. Check out the small stand of plant for sale at the entrance. You may find Ohme garden carpet thyme, a creeping variety with pink flowers widely used on the garden grounds. ohmegardens.com Mike Bonnicksen

“The building is breathtaking, the local farmers, restaurants and artisanal food producers it hosts are uniformly superb, and its location on the banks of the Columbia River is stunning.” — Seattle Reined/KOMO

Pybus Public Market Michelle

Pybus Public Market is a great place to start exploring the

Naranjo

Wenatchee Valley. The market’s great location (on the west bank of the Columbia River near downtown Wenatchee) gives you options: ◆ Eat and shop at the market. It’s home to lots of shops and restaurants, places to enjoy a microbrew or glass of wine, a farmers market and many community events. ◆ Walk or bike the “Loop Trail,” which runs right by the market. It’s the best bike trail in Central Washington. Head north (past the Market osprey nest on a tall pole) and check out parks and public art and the mighty Columbia River. Or rent a bike and do the entire 11-mile loop. It’ll take you about an hour. ◆ Check out historic downtown Wenatchee. You’ll find lots of restaurants, pubs, quirky and cool shops, public sculptures, the Numerica Performing Arts Center and the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center.

The Pybus Market has far more to offer than a location to buy your weekly supply of groceries. Pybus lies two blocks east of historic downtown Wenatchee and converges at the Loop Trail, Riverfront Park, and Orondo Boat Basin. Well, the world has seven wonders, the travelers always tell Some gardens and some towers, I guess you know them well But the greatest wonder is in Uncle Sam’s fair land It’s that King Columbia River and the big Grand Coulee Dam “Grand Coulee Dam” — Woody Guthrie

633-9265 usbr.gov/pn/grandcoulee/visit/ index.html The dam is about two hours from Wenatchee. Check out the Discovery Channel’s fine documentary on the dam. It’s available on YouTube.

Kettle Falls Several tribes living in the areas now occupied by Grand Coulee Dam and Lake Roosevelt have called this place home for over 11,000 years. These tribes include the Sanpoil, Nespelem, Colville, Lakes and Spokane. For these tribes and others that lived along the Columbia River, salmon was the primary source of food and the basis for trade. Kettle Falls, located 100 miles north of Grand Coulee Dam’s current location, was the second-largest salmon fishery on the Columbia River. When fish migrated to Kettle Falls each year beginning in May, tribes from around the Northwest (Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Canada) gathered to share in the abundance of salmon and to engage in trade. — U.S.Bureau of Reclamation

Besides walkers, you’ll see bicyclists, joggers, in-line skaters, dog walkers and more. Access: There are many access points to the Loop. A few include: 1) If you’re riding or walking around the downtown core, head east on First Street. At First Street and Wenatchee Avenue, a covered walking-cycling bridge takes you over the railroad tracks to Riverfront Park. 2) Drive Fifth Street east (downhill and toward the river) until it ends in Riverfront Park. Park here and walk toward the river to find a paved trail. 3) Take Ninth Street east toward the river until it merges into Walla Walla Street. Follow this north for about half mile and turn right into Walla Walla Point Park. Park ok eabro Don S

here and, again, walk toward the river to find the trail. 4) If you’re in East Wenatchee, follow 19th Street N.W.

west toward the river. At the bottom of 19th, turn left and park next to the Douglas County Services Building. Then, walk toward the river to find the trail.

East Wenatchee

Mike Bonnicksen

J

ust across the Columbia River from Wenatchee, this city offers restaurants, the largest indoor mall in the Wenatchee Valley, golf and outdoor

recreation.

Mike

Bonn i

East Wenatchee is defined by the Columbia River, its

ckse n

gently rolling hills interspersed with wide, flat spaces (perfect for neighborhoods and orchards) and availability of plentiful water and cheap power (perfect for huge data centers). Pick up that split. Wenatchee Valley’s only bowling alley — Eastmont Lanes — is located at 704 Grant Road. Find your calm. The Bridge of Friendship Japanese Garden in East Wenatchee is so creatively designed — shade, breezes, flowing water — that visitors can find cool relief even on the hottest summer evenings. This pocket park is tucked only a dozen steps from the busy intersection of 9th Street NE and Eastmont Avenue.

Aviation history The first nonstop flight across the Pacific Ocean took place in 1931 and ended in a crash landing near East Wenatchee. A replica of the Bellanca Skyrocket — the Miss Veedol — still flies over the Wenatchee Valley during community celebrations. A non-flying replica is on display in Misawa, Japan. Misawa and the Wenatchee Valley are sister cities.

Archaeology Can you dig it? Clovis stone and bone

tools were discovered near East Wenatchee and are more than 11,000 years old. Ice Age floods shaped much of what you see in the valley, with some of the ancient deluges rising to 1,100 feet. And there were a lot of floods. Maybe 90 or so. Tom Williams

Hit the rocky road Squint your eyes to imagine the area’s geologic wonders of 18,000 years ago by taking the Ice Age Flood Loop driving tour, a day-long, 164-mile jaunt through some of the region’s most dramatic cliffs, canyons, ravines and boulder stacks. Pick up a driving map at area Chambers of Commerce offices or visitor centers at Dry Falls and Grand Coulee Dam. Tom Williams

Waterville Mike Irwin

W

aterville is a great jumping-off point for exploring the sweeping, wheat-covered Waterville Plateau. It’s mid-way between Seattle and Spokane on Highway 2, a scenic east-west alternative to the grind of Interstate 90.

Once in town, be sure to check out the historic Douglas County

Courthouse. If you’re a photographer, you’ll love the old barns and farmhouses in the surrounding, rolling wheat fields. There are also downtown storefronts that reflect the town’s 1889 founding. And at 2,622 feet above sea level, Waterville tops all other municipalities in the state as the incorporated town that’s perched the highest. Information: watervillewashington.org/ Waterville is on the Ice Age Floods geological trail and you can take a short drive north of this wheat town to see “erratics,”

house-sized boulders dropped by an Ice Age ice sheet. Look for an amazing collection of the erratics on the eye-popping drive through McNeil Canyon Road toward Chelan.

Entiat Don Seabrook

The annual Ardenvoir Swallow Festival features a small parade on Entiat River Road in front of Coopers Store, about 10 miles from Entiat.

E

ntiat sits right on Highway 97A between Wenatchee and Lake Chelan. It’s a good place to stop, grab a bite to eat and

stretch your legs in a park along the Columbia River. You’ll find playground equipment, camping for RVs and tents, a boat launch, and the Entiaqua Trail along the Columbia and Entiat rivers. Take a drive up the Entiat River and you’ll find orchards, the family friendly Entiat National Fish Hatchery and lovely Silver Falls with its excellent trail for young and old. Check out Ardenvoir’s annual Swallow Festival on the second Saturday in April. The festival celebrates the return of the swallows to a valley that’s one of North Central Washington’s hidden secrets.

More to do Camp and hike at Lake Wenatchee State Park. The park has nearly 500 acres of camping and trails and a swimming beach. The 2,445-acre glacier-fed lake is its centerpiece. Hunt for berries. August is picking season in the high Cascades. Check with the U.S. Forest Service in Leavenworth for general recommendations on where to go. Visit mountain goats on Nason Ridge. Overlooking Lake Wenatchee, Nason Ridge is reached by hiking U.S. Forest Service trails. You’ll want to be in good shape and make sure you’re prepared with dayhike essentials, including gear, water and a lunch. Mountain goats can often be seen at the Alpine Fire lookout on top of the ridge. The views of the lake are great. Visit the Iron Goat. The Iron Goat Trail near Stevens Pass, at the Cascade crest on Highway 2, offers a look into railway history. Look for the signs for the trailhead that starts by the red caboose

orth Central Washington is loaded with chances to see wildlife. Pick just about any waterfront park, natural area, state park, trail or back road and you’re guaranteed to see some critter. There are eagles and ospreys along the Columbia River and its tributaries, bighorn sheep along Highway 97A north of Wenatchee, and deer pretty much everywhere. You also have a chance of seeing black bears and mountain goats in many areas of the upper Wenatchee River, Entiat and Methow River valleys. Here are some tried-and-true spots for wildlife:

Big game Drive north on Highway 97A out of Wenatchee and you don’t have to go far before you get into bighorn sheep country. They are often seen close to the highway but hopefully behind a fence installed a few years ago to keep them out of the roadway. A drive up the Entiat Valley is scenic and will often times result in deer sightings. Deer are everywhere in the Methow Valley in Okanogan County, but often congregate Mike Bo

nnicksen

along Highway 20 just south of Winthrop and along the Loup Loup Highway south of Twisp. Deer can also been seen along the foothills trails west of Wenatchee.

Ride the Lady of the Lake ferry up Lake Chelan and you’ll often get to see bighorn sheep and mountain goats on the steep, rocky shore, with occasional sightings of cougar, moose and black bears in the summer. If you’re up for an adventure, hike to the Alpine Lookout on the south shore of Lake Wenatchee and you’re nearly always sure to see one or many of the mountain goats that roam the ridge tops.

Birds Eagles, osprey, hawks, and herons can be seen up and down the Columbia, Wenatchee, Entiat, Methow and Okanogan rivers. The 11-mile Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail in Wenatchee has an abundance of birds and areas to view them. Walla Walla Point Park and the adjoining Horan Natural Area are good places to start. Where we grow grapes North Central Washington has four American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), which are officially designated wine-grape growing regions. Each has its own distinct climate, soils, elevation and other features that affect the quality and characteristics of its grapes.

Columbia Valley AVA Established: 1984 as the state’s third appellation. Size: 11 million acres and encompassing most of the Columbia Basin. It’s the state’s largest AVA, where 99 percent of wine grapes in the state are grown. It contains 10 sub-appellations, including three in NCW.

Production: 43,000 acres in vine, with 6,070 acres solely in Columbia Valley AVA and no other appellation; 58 percent red, 42 percent white.

Grapes: Most varieties are represented, including Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec and Pinot Gris.

Distinguishing features: Soils are defined by the ancient Missoula Glacial Floods of 15,000 to 18,000 years ago. Many vineyards are below the flood line in soils of loess — windblown deposits of sand and silt — which lie atop gravel, which lie atop basalt bedrock. These well-drained sediments are considered perfect for viticulture.

Wahluke Slope AVA Established: 2006 as the state’s 8th appellation and a sub-appellation of the Columbia Valley AVA.

Size: 81,000 acres. Production: 6,645 acres cultivated; 67 percent red, 34 percent

white.

Grapes: Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc.

Distinguishing features: The area lies on a broad, south-facing slope with constant 8 percent grades, deep topsoil and good drainage. It has one of the driest, warmest climates in the state, allowing for nearly complete control of vine vigor and ripening through irrigation.

Lake Chelan AVA Established: 2009 as the state’s 11th appellation and a sub-appellation of the Columbia Valley AVA.

Size: 24,040 acres. Production: 247 acres cultivated; 51 percent red, 49 percent white.

Grapes: Syrah, Merlot, Malbec, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Chardonnay

Distinguishing features: Climate is moderated by the thermal effect of Lake Chelan. Soils have loaded with pumice and ash from volcanic eruptions, primarily from Glacier Peak located to the west of the AVA.

Ancient Lakes AVA

It’s the largest gathering of wineries in the region, and the only professionally-judged wine event dedicated to wines produced in Chelan, Douglas, Grant and Okanogan counties. And this year it’s bigger than ever— more food, wine, beers, ciders, distilleries and eateries.

Established: 2012 as the state’s 13th appellation and a sub-appellation of the Columbia Valley AVA.

Size: 162,762 acres. Production: 1,399 acres cultivated; 20 percent red, 80 percent white.

Grapes: Chardonnay, Riesling, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Bordeaux varieties.

Distinguishing features: Sixty-five different soil types in the AVA have been identified, most produced by the Missoula Glacial Floods. The most commons soils are fine, sandy loam that contribute to wines with higher acidity levels and, with reds, a greater tannic impact. — Sources: Washington State Wine Commission and AppellationAmerica.com

elax on a beach towel in one of Chelan’s several parks and look northwest, past your toes, to the spectacle of lake, mountains, sun

and sky that make Lake Chelan a water-filled wonderland. More than 50 miles long, Lake Chelan is 1,500 feet deep (Native American called it “tsill-anne,” or “deep water”) and ranks as the third-deepest lake in North America. It’s a playground for enthusiasts of boating, jet skiing, swimming, fishing, hiking, biking and — of course — suntanning.

Downtown is built for strolling past its many restaurants, bars and shops. Don Morse Park, on the lake and within easy walking distance of downtown, is among the most popular spots on the lake with its sandy beaches on 2,000 feet of waterfront and great views. Dams make irrigation possible on more than 670,000 acres of fruit, onions, beans, potatoes — Grant County is the top tater-producing county in the U.S. — and a dozen other crops. Wind, water and fire (think volcanic activity) shaped the Basin over millions of years. Glaciers, molten basalt flows and giant floods gouged, sharpened and rearranged the entire landscape into what we see today — a paradise for modern-day explorers who want to hike, bike, boat, hunt, fish, climb, dine, shop or just plain relax in the sun. Catch a concert at the Gorge. There is no other place like the Gorge Amphitheatre, a 20,000-person concert venue on the lip of the Columbia River Gorge. In between acts, take in the sweeping views of the river below huge basalt cliffs. Watch potato-peeling pros compete to be the top spud during the Potato Peeling Contest at the annual Farmer Consumer Awareness Day in Quincy. It’s on the second Saturday of September. If you’re wondering, “Why potatoes?” Grant County grows more potatoes than any other county in the country. Check out an Ancient Lakes waterfall near Quincy. Spring comes early to Ancient Lakes and it’s a popular place for hikers, mountain-bikers, fishing, hunting and horseback riding. The lakes are set in a dramatic landscape of deep coulees, volcanic buttes and big skies. Take a mud bath on the shores of Soap Lake. People have been coming here since the early 1900s to bathe in the waters of the high-mineral-content lake, which is said to have healing properties. And it just feels good. Get up close with a giant wind turbine at Wild Horse Renewable Energy Center on Whiskey Dick Mountain. Sip a little wine. Grant County is a wine-making powerhouse. Check out the Jones of Washington tasting room in

Quincy. Hang 10 on the surfing simulator at Surf ‘n’ Slide Water Park in Moses Lake or check out one of several 200-footlong water slides. Live the island life at Crescent Bar, a riverfront community west of Quincy. You’ll find a resort, golf, tennis, fishing, and water sports. A new Grant County PUD campground puts you right on the shore of the Columbia River.

Nearby Gamble Sands Golf Course — is one of the best new courses in the nation, according to Golf Digest magazine. Come to Brewster for its Fourth of July celebration, which includes a parade and fireworks on the Columbia River. Have a slice when Pateros holds its Apple Pie Jamboree on the third weekend of July.

Check out the Fort Okanogan Interpretive Center, just north of Brewster. Built in 1911, this first American fur trading outpost in Washington state has been given back to the Colville Tribes, which redid many of the displays to offer more insight from a tribal perspective. The center hosts different events and exhibits, found on its Facebook page.
