Cherry Tree House donates Tabards

Cherry Tree House Residential Care Home in Dobbins Lane, Wendover, have bought the children of their local school, John Hampden, new tabards for their lunchtime monitors to wear. Events coordinator Jenny says: "All the staff and residents love their visits from the children, so they are delighted to be able to sponsor them this year”.

A Calendar for Wendover

The Wendover Calendar is now available to purchase from the Community Library for only £7.50 while stocks last. The Friends of Wendover Community Library are pleased to run an annual photography competition of local scenes and the standard seems to get better every year. The winners of the competition are published in a calendar. The overall winner of the competition is featured on the front cover as shown in the photo, second is shown on the back cover.

Congratulations to Martin Hommel, centre, holding the calendar, who is the overall winner. His photo will be on display in the King and Queen, South Street, HP22 6EF until the end of November. Phil Mitchell, right, chair of Wendover Community Library Trust, is about to hand over the prize – a voucher for a meal for two at the King & Queen. The Wendover Calendar is an ideal gift for friends and relatives who are fond of Wendover.

Wendover Remembers

During the centenary of World War One local historians Val Moir and Mike Senior wrote about activities each month on the battle front and at home. These articles have been collected and augmented with new illustrations and stories in a book, entitled Wendover Remembers, available from Just, 11 High Street HP22 6DU and Wendover Community Library. Cost £8 while stocks last. All profit to the selling organisation.

Grants for students

The William Hill Charity makes small grants to students who might need financial help with buying books or other educational resources. To see if you are eligible, please contact Jennifer Ballantine on 01296 622483

Wendy Gray wins!

Wendy, of Road Farm Countryways in Great Missenden, was presented with the Make A Difference Award for Social Care Award by Andy Collins of 3 Counties Radio in September. The farm runs social care programs for people who enjoy time in nature but who might otherwise find it difficult to get there. Learn more about Road Farm in the August 2020 Wendover News, on page 3.

Wendover Celebrates

The Directors of Wendover Celebrates have had to cancel the 2020 event (originally postponed to 2021). This is because it requires so much organisation in advance. As soon as things change and it is safe to do so, the Directors will organise a new Wendover Celebrates in an appropriate format.

Rennie Grove Memorial Wood

Contributors to Wendover's Rennie Grove Memorial Wood were notified in October that HS2 is taking possession of the wood for an unknown period of time. Arrangements are being made to relocate some items from the wood elsewhere. Learn more in the December 2020 Wendover News.

Queen's Birthday Honours

Longtime volunteer at Wendover Pool, Liz Youens, was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in October for a lifetime devoted to promoting water safety. In addition to volunteering regularly at Wendover Swimming Pool, Liz has taught lifeguard qualifications to many adults and children locally. Wendover News extends its congratulations to Liz on her achievement.

FNH@home turns 1

“Research showed that up to 70% of people say they want to die at home, where they feel most comfortable.” says Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity’s Chief Executive Officer, Jo Turner. “Yet more than half of us will die in hospital, often following an emergency admission during the last two weeks of life.” The FNH@Home team of 12 palliative care nurses and healthcare assistants were able to continue the service throughout the Covid-19 lockdown, and are looking for additional nurses to join their team.
