Wendover Football Club

On Easter Monday, the annual competition for the Oving Cup took place, and Wendover FC beat Wingrave FC to take the Cup! (team photo above by Derek Pelling, Aylesbury & District News) The competition has been held since the late 19th century and records are complete except for 1912, when Wendover beat Waddesdon but the score is unknown. Could you help complete the records?

Wendover Cricket Club

Wendover Cricket Club is 4 weeks into the new season and have already played 24 junior and 11 senior matches. In all, there are some 150 junior matches scheduled across 10 age groups and also with 2 girls teams.

The Girls Section caters for 9 to 12 year olds, running ECB Dynamos-style sessions on Sunday mornings and separate hardball training on Fridays; new recruits are welcome. For this and any other playing enquiries, contact Jonathan Seabrook on 07767 148 119 or use contacts via www.pitchero.com/clubs/wendovercricketclub.

The new ground development progress continues to frustrate; despite planning permission being given on 25 April, one of the key conditions with programme implications is to carry out archaeology investigations and we were set to start this in early April. But HS2 then decided this was the moment to insist that no further surveys or intrusive works could take place without a licence and 6 weeks later, we are still waiting for the licence. Consequently it is now certain we will be without a main ground for a second season and we are indebted to 4 local clubs who are allowing our teams to use their grounds – Aylesbury Town, Kimble, Lt Missenden Misfits and Monks Risborough CC’s.

Simply Walk

Wendover’s Simply Walk Group was pleased to announce the return of its free ‘weekly’ walks from the beginning of May, following the recruitment of two new Leaders. They will now be providing two gentle walks every week, free of charge, both of which are escorted by qualified Leaders & Backmarkers, so that no-one gets lost or left behind.

The first is suitable for beginners or people recovering from illness or injury and the second is suitable for walkers with some experience or who are looking to maintain their existing level of fitness. Both walks start from the Clocktower promptly at 10:00am every Tuesday morning but, if it’s your first time, then please arrive 15mins early. Just look for the person in the hi-viz jacket.

For further info on all Simply Walks in Bucks go to the Bucks County website at simplywalks@ buckinghamshire.gov.uk or contact Fiona Broadbent on 01494 475367.

Wendover Bowls Club

We were all sad to hear about the passing of our President, Tony Mogford. A true gentleman who will be missed, not just by us but, by the whole community.

Our outdoor season is well and truly under way. The Dinner celebrating the end of indoor bowling and the start of our outdoor campaign was a great success with a lovely buzz about it. It was good to see over sixty members enjoying a social event that we have missed so much during the last two years.

Our Parrot House lean-to is fully compliant with all government recommendations on ventilation, consisting as it does of just a roof and no walls, the ultimate in air conditioning. I understand that difficulty in finding materials is holding up completion. The Friday Open evenings are going well with good numbers sampling the joy of bowling. I watched one group who were frighteningly good. I hope it was just beginners luck or I will struggle to get into a team.

Talking of membership, ours is holding up well. Other clubs seem to be finding it difficult to raise teams. Apart from cancellations, we have even had to lend out a couple of our own people to make up numbers. Of course they have strict instructions not to play too well!! Keep well. Enjoy the summer and let's hope we have just enough rain to keep things green and enough sun to get us brown.

Wendover Horticultural Society

Our June meeting has been cancelled as it fell on the Jubilee Bank Holiday. We have three outings in June and July. The first, on 16 June, is a trip to the gardens of Tom Stuart-Smith at Serge Hill, Bedmond near Abbotts Langley. Transport is by car and lifts can be provided. We will also visit his sister’s gardens at The Barn, close by. July outings to Moggerhanger Hall & Gardens and Arla dairy (TBC). Non-members are welcome, enquiries to Diane, telephone 07966 155775.
