was first introduced to Issa Rae and her magnetic personality with the critically acclaimed dramedy television show Insecure in 2018. On page 12, we take a look at this outstanding actress, producer and writer’s journey. If watching some of our favourite television shows, our own experience, and chatting with friends and family teach us anything, it’s that relationships are beautiful yet tricky, and require work and dedicaton. On page 46, we speak to experts about their tried-and-tested and most often-shared relationship advice. And on page 40, we offer professional guidance for those having difficulty establishing boundaries with an ex. I love seeing people in love and enjoy celebrating weddings, anniversaries, and Valentine’s Day because love is such a wonderful thing. But, as the mother of an adolescent daughter, the prospect of her dating filled me with dread for many years. For parents like me, experts offer advice on teen dating for both parents and their teens on page 43. For those heading out on a date, we give date-approved makeup tips on page 18 to help you look your best, and on page 58 feature delicious treats to serve to your loved ones. We have not forgotten about our junior Club members. On page 62, we’ve included Valentine’s Day heart-inspired crafts you can make and gift. Enjoy! With love from myself and the Jet Club team,

YEARS OF GREAT SERVICE

In 1969, when I was 27 years old, I lost my husband in a terrible accident in the Western Cape. At the time, I had three children. The youngest had just turned a year on the day of the funeral. I was also pregnant with a daughter at the time. She was born in August 1970. In order to provide for four children, I had no choice but to look for a job. Then a friend recommended me to a Jet store in the Northern Cape. I started there as a cleaner, but was soon promoted to cashier. When customers approached, I was there to serve them to the best of my abilities. In those days, you could only buy using cash or lay-by. I worked very hard to reach my target because the

employee with the most lay-bys won a prize. Thank you so much, Jet, for the affordable clothes. Over the years, I was able to clothe my children and put food on the table. I would lay-by for the next season, so the kids would have clothes in time, and I would not be strained financially. I am now a pensioner and still a proud Jet account holder and Jet Club member. Thank you, Jet management, for the good job I had over the years. God bless you, and stay safe. SARA KATRINA LEBRETON, Concordia It is always heartwarming to hear from longstanding Jet family members. It is fantastic people like you who make Jet what it is. Thank you for your service and support over the years. Yours is our winning letter, Sara. You have won a 5 00000 Jet Gift Card. Happy shopping! – Ed

THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT

I opened a Jet account in February 2017, and it has been very helpful to me over the years. I am taking care of my five siblings. My father lost his job in 2017, and my mother was also not working, so it was a difficult time for us, but I managed to take care of them because of the account. I was able to buy clothes for the kids and the elders. I could also get bedding and electrical appliances. I did not have to go anywhere else. That is how I’ve managed to take care of my family. And my Jet account is still there for me. KGOTHATSO SEBOKO, Soshanguve Your family is fortunate to have such a caring and supportive sister and daughter. May you be blessed for your kindness. I do hope things get better for you and your family. You have won a 25000 Jet Gift Card. – Ed.

giveaway Win THE BATMAN IS FINALLY HERE!

1 OF 5 THE BATMAN HAMPERS VALUED AT 1 30000 EACH

IMAGES: SUPPLIED

The popularity of Batman is a worldwide phenomenon. He is one of the world’s most popular comic-book characters, so it’s unsurprising that The Batman is expected to be one of this year’s biggest hits. Starring Robert Pattinson in the lead role, The Batman will finally hit theatres on 3 March 2022, following numerous Covid-19-related delays. With Robert’s debut as the Caped Crusader, we’ll see an entirely new Bat cast and villains. Robert, who is best known for playing Edward Cullen in the Twilight films, is also a huge Batman fan, so he is well aware of the privilege of playing the character. He recently admitted that seeing himself as the Caped Crusader was surreal. To mark the film’s release, we’re offering five lucky Jet Club members the chance to win a fantastic The Batman hamper. Each hamper contains a Batman pin badge, keyring with projection torch, pen, multi-tool with wallet, phone ring stand, wireless phone charger, cap, T-shirt and credit card wallet. SMS ‘batman’ to 37826 to stand a chance of winning 1 of the 5 hampers. See The Batman movie review on page 66. For competition terms and conditions, see page 11.

SPOTLIGHT ON CHOSA

CHOSA works tirelessly to assist communities in protecting the most vulnerable members of society. Find out how they continue giving hope to children around the country.

C

hildren of SA (CHOSA) is an organisation whose primary focus is to work with child-focused grassroots organisations ranging from after-school programmes to orphanages and schools. Its mission is to assist other organisations to build their capacity, offer mentorship, establish networks and provide funding. ‘Children are the most important human beings in our society; we try by all

means to ensure that they are fed, have access to quality education and are safe,’ says CHOSA project coordinator, Lolwetu Sibidla. For example, an early childhood development initiative in Mfuleni started in a shack, but with the support of CHOSA, is now housed in a new structure. Currently, they are working on 13 partner projects, and the plan is to increase this to 16. They also plan to broaden their network

T

he Papillon Foundation celebrated 20 years of community work in 2021. The organisation, founded in 2001 by husband and wife Stephen and Marian Smith, works to support communities and other NPOs. The primary goal of its national programmes is to assist vulnerable and impoverished people through trauma counselling, donating computers, providing training, offering rape and abuse survivor support, as well as food donation projects. Their mission is to work with other NPOs and community members to enhance the lives of

people in the Western Cape and other African countries. As Marian explains, ‘This is our calling. We are here to help others.’ Together with another NPO, they recently started a coding project. ‘We plan to expand access to training for more young people as we take the project from pilot to full implementation this year,’ she adds. ‘After training, participants will be able to write the accredited coding certification exam.’ Even those who are unable to write the exams can still find employment in the IT field or start web-developing businesses, for example.

GET INVOLVED

Would you like to contribute and assist The Papillon Foundation in reaching out to more communities and helping other charity organisations? To volunteer or make a donation, email the Papillon Foundation at info@papillonfoundation.com.

At the moment, the foundation is able to raise the money required for their many projects through crowdsourcing.

vision board created from magazine pictures and headlines hangs on Issa Rae’s Los Angeles home-office wall. It was made nine years ago, during a period of unemployment. It features an HBO logo, the words ‘TV writer’, a desire to own a home with a pool, and to fall in love. DEAR UNIVERSE ‘I created a vision board with my team members in the conference room of my downtown apartment and put it away,’ she captioned an Instagram post in December 2020. ‘I discovered it and framed it two years ago when moving, astonished at how much had come true,’ she adds. Admittedly, it looks like the vision board worked. She has landed HBO deals, is an actress, TV writer and producer, and has fallen in love. She was recently announced as part of Twitter’s biggest celebrity campaign to date, alongside Megan Thee Stallion and Demi Lovato. The campaign encourages

In less than a decade, she nailed a lifetime’s worth of visions – all this at the age of 37. A PIECE OF ISSA The Los Angeles-born Issa is known for keeping her personal life private. She acknowledges that she prefers to build boundaries between her job and personal life. ‘I believe that in the short time I’ve been in the industry, I’ve watched how many people who are front-facing lack peace, and that always bothered me,’ she explains in an interview with The Independent. She acknowledges, however, that this has not always been the case. ‘The more I started to seep out, the more I felt like people took ownership of me and my decisions and things that I did. On a Monday morning in July, she posted on Instagram that she had secretly married her partner Louis Diame in the South of France, surrounded by close friends and family. In the pictures she looks breathtaking in a custom Vera Wang ivory sweetheart strapless gown with a chapel-length ivory veil. ‘I still try to be private about my personal life, but that was something that I knew was going to be shared, and I just wanted to share it on my own terms,’ she says. ‘There’s something really nice about having a piece of me that no one knows about or can talk about except for the people who are part of my life,’ she said in an interview with Vanity Fair. ‘Self-care means having a separate, private space for me,’ she adds. While Issa admits to being a workaholic, she does spend time building relationships in her life. For example, she sets calendar reminders to text or call a friend or loved one. ‘It’s depressing to realise, ‘Oh, we really have to make an effort to see each other,’” she said about the challenges that come with navigating friendships in her mid-30s. SELF-CARE Keeping personal boundaries is not the only way Issa practises self-care. In the

pandemic’s early days spending a great deal of time at home, Issa’s favourite method of self-care was waking up as early as 4am to go on a walk alone. While on her walk, she listened to the news to stay informed about current events. According to her, journalling is something she also started and now does on a daily basis. ‘Waking up at four makes me feel like I have a window of time just for me. I think that’s my form of meditation because I don’t meditate,’ she adds. THE BEGINNING Morning walks are a recurring theme in Insecure, her semi-autobiographical HBO series about balancing love, friendship and self-discovery as a late 20-something. Issa, born Jo-Issa Rae Diop, was 26 years old in 2011 and disillusioned with her attempts to get into Hollywood. As a result, the Stanford University graduate launched a YouTube web series titled The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. Issa portrayed J, a young woman navigating the social awkwardness of her late adolescence. The show soon accumulated millions of views and generated great enthusiasm, particularly among black women, who had been longing for characters who accurately and humorously depicted their lives. Awkward Black Girl’s success paved the way for her 2015 New York Times best-selling memoir of the same name, as well as for Insecure. The HBO dramedy, in which Issa stars >>

As the fifth season’s final episode wrapped up in December 2021, it gave Issa more free time to pursue her other interests. THE WORKAHOLIC Issa has no plans to slow down anytime soon, evident in her growing celebrity status, hectic schedule, and fulfilling personal life. On the movies and television front, she will appear in the next Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel. In addition, she just struck a five-year deal with HBO and parent company Warner Media in which the network has exclusive television rights to her projects. Issa is also producing Rap Sh*t, a forthcoming HBO Max comedy series that chronicles the reunion of two high-school buddies who join a rap group. Then there’s another HBO Max project titled Sweet Life: Los Angeles, an unscripted series about gorgeous and driven 20-somethings living in the South of Los Angeles. The show recently premiered on the network. There are also several other projects in development, including a relaunch of Project Greenlight, a reality show produced by Matt Damon and Ben

HOW TO WEAR PRINTS WITH STYLE & MAKEUP LOOKS FOR DATE NIGHT

BEAUTY

DATE NIGHT For date night, you may want to turn up the romance a notch. To help you look and feel your best, we share the secrets to creating flirtatious looks. TEXT NTHABISENG MAKHOKHA

FULL-ON GLAM

Shimmer, glitter, and yes, more shimmer – that’s what a full-on glam look is all about. So, if you’re a girly girl and love everything that sparkles, then this is the look for you. ACHIEVE THE LOOK: Don’t be afraid to add different elements of shine. For example, try glossy lips, glitter eyeshadow, and shimmery accessories for a more synchronised look.

HINT OF COLOUR

Nothing says playful and fun like a touch of colour on the eyes or lips. To make this work for you, choose a bold colour that works well with your skin’s undertone – these are the natural colours underneath your skin’s surface. They are usually red, yellow or blue. ACHIEVE THE LOOK: Use neutral colours on the rest of your face to avoid a look that’s too busy. If you like, match your lipstick or eyeshadow colour with one accessory, like your bag, earrings or even your nails.

CUT CREASE

This eyeshadow technique is used to provide a unique and edgy look and is just as glamorous as the full-on glam look. The difference is that you can achieve it with different colours and forms, making eyes appear more prominent. When a lighter shade of eyeshadow is smudged across the crease of the lid, it produces a dramatic contrast that gives the appearance of large and well-defined eyes, which is both an optical illusion and a makeup trend. ACHIEVE THE LOOK: To make your cut crease pop with any colour, base your eyeshadow with a white eyeshadow primer or the lightest shade of concealer.

NATURAL GLAM

SMOKEY EYE

IMAGES: UNSPLASH, GALLO IMAGES/GETTY IMAGES

This is a classic look that offers just the right amount of glam. For evening occasions, the smokey eye has always been the go-to look. Not only does it bring sophistication to the eyes, but it’s also romantic and seductive. ACHIEVE THE LOOK: Go easy on the accessories and always pair your bolder eye makeup with a nude lip. Too many colours or bold elements can make your makeup appear too heavy. JBG Fashion 6 Colour Eyeshadow Palette 4999 JBG Lengthening, Mascara 4999

This makeup look is still glam, but appears lighter and more natural. The look is both edgy and refined and uses monochromatic colours like beige. Think a luminous complexion, faded eyeshadow, and a neutral lip instead of going full-on glam with multicoloured eyeshadow and tons of glitter. ACHIEVE THE LOOK: Play with different forms and textures but stick to the same colour. For example, use a sheer beige eyeshadow and a glossy nude lipstick. Then contour your face to make your features stand out. All JBG products are:

STYLE ADVICE

PULL OFF THE

With a few styling tips, you can master the art of wearing prints like a pro. TEXT NTHABISENG MAKHOKHA

P

rints offer a bold way to make an ordinary outfit stand out. From monochromes and geometrics to florals and animal print, they can be used to flatter, accentuate or minimise different body shapes. And there are a number of ways to make the most of these striking patterns.

BASE COLOURS

GEOMETRICS

Although geometric prints are bolder than most, they can give you an air of sophistication. They come in different shapes, but the most common are triangles, houndstooth and quadrilaterals (squares). If you fancy a clash of prints, wear houndstooth items together or triangles and quadrilaterals – and you can also try mixed geometric prints together, so long as the colours are complementary or similar. BODY SHAPE: These flatter any body shape; how well they sit on the body depends on the garment’s structure. Fullerfigured women should avoid larger prints and bright colours that could make their shape appear wider and, instead, opt for smaller prints in more muted colours.

Unless you’re wearing print on print or a single printed item like a dress or jumpsuit, it’s always a good idea to choose a plain coloured item to go with your printed piece. While black and white prints go with any colour, others may need a little matching.

FLORALS & ANIMAL PRINT While florals give a more relaxed feel, animal print can take on different looks for any occasion. Bigger florals look good on maxi dresses and loose blouses, while smaller floral prints are great on fitted and formal items like suits and shift dresses. Because they’re so busy, animal prints look great paired with anything black, brown or beige – like a black biker jacket, brown boots, a black blazer, or a pair of black or beige slacks. BODY SHAPE: These work well with all body shapes; the trick is to keep the fit slightly loose – but not baggy – and the print to one item. Anything more than that could look too busy.

BLACK & WHITE

Anyone can rock a black and white printed outfit featuring polka dots, or horizontal or vertical stripes. These prints look especially good with plain black base items or denim – think a black-and-white houndstooth jacket over denim or black flares. Then, add a pop of colour with an accessory for a striking and complementary contrast. BODY SHAPE: Vertical stripes make fuller figures appear slimmer and elongated, while horizontal stripes lend a wider or fuller appearance. The size of the stripes also has an impact, with bigger stripes having a widening effect and smaller stripes a narrowing one. These effects are heightened by black-and-white stripes.

magine a world in which there is no waste or greed. This is the wilderness world, and it’s Sicelo Mbatha’s world. Sicelo founded Umkhiwane Spiritual Journeys in 2014, and runs wilderness trails in KwaZulu-Natal, from Hluhluwe-iMfolozi to the Drakensberg. The name ‘umkhiwane’ is a tribute to the sycamore fig tree. ‘The umkhiwane or sycamore fig tree can rightly be called the giving tree,’ writes Sicelo. Tourists and the community alike benefit from the company’s wilderness excursions.

with Sicelo over six days and five nights. ‘I was blown away by how he held that space,’ she says. She later did another trail with him, and they talked casually about writing a book. ‘Then lockdown came, and Sicelo’s work flew out the window,’ says Bridget. So she got on the phone and convinced him this was their opportunity. Sicelo gathered his journals, read his notes and sat down at his computer. He and Bridget worked together – he in KwaZulu-Natal and she in Cape Town – to produce a truly life-changing book. It tells his story, from the six-year-old who herded his family’s goats to his work today, which brings healing through rediscovering nature. The encounters he’s had with animals, from baboons and black mambas to lions and elephants, are by turns terrifying, agonising, and miraculous, but always

enlightening and inspiring. ‘The purpose of the book,’ he says, ‘is to help people find the beauty in nature, to reconnect with it, and with themselves.’ A WELCOME PUNISHMENT The book is not without moments of supreme irony and humour. For example, he recalls a time when, as a young schoolchild, his ‘punishment’ for perceived wrongdoing was working in the school garden. The child whose very soul was itching to escape the confines of the classroom was never happier than when being ‘punished’, working with the soil and feeling at one with nature. After witnessing the heartbreaking grief of a mother baboon mourning her dead baby, Sicelo says he understood that ‘one of the keys to repairing our broken relationships with other species is to start appreciating the depth of their emotions’.

PES?

The Presidential Employment Stimulus (PES) was launched in response to the financial havoc caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Could it help you? TEXT: GLYNIS HORNING

T

he Presidential Employment Stimulus (PES) was launched in October 2020 in response to the toll that Covid-19 took on South Africa’s already struggling economy. The aim is to boost employment by creating jobs and to keep those in vulnerable sectors like textiles, agriculture and beverages employed. This is achieved through a range of programmes in 15 national government departments working with the private sector. According to Public Works Minister Patricia de Lille, the focus is on ensuring that the jobs created ‘provide meaningful work experience, so participants become work-ready’. The targets are mainly young people and women, from artists and creatives to cultural- and heritage-sector workers, subsistence farmers, and those involved in rural roads maintenance and environmental initiatives. South Africa has one of the most unequal societies in the world, and unemployment is the biggest cause of its income inequality, says Dr Kate Philip, PES programme lead. PES is a way of ‘supporting South Africa on a trajectory of more inclusive growth’, she says.

LIFE

LET’S TALK

PHASE 1

The first phase of PES ran from October 2020 to March 2021. It was announced that more than 550 000 jobs and livelihoods had been supported out of a target of nearly 700 000, with beneficiaries mainly being young people (84%) and women (58%). The main programme was a Basic Education Employment Initiative. About 320 000 young people were employed as assistants at 22 000 schools across the country and paid a national minimum wage (R3 500 a month), which they could spend in their communities, helping to support local businesses.

PHASE 2

➤ To find out more about

PES and to monitor its progress, visit www. stateofthenation.gov.za/ employment-stimulusdashboard.

Launched in October 2021, this sees a further allocation of R11 billion from the National Treasury being spent on continuing some Phase 1 initiatives and introducing many new ones. Could some, like these, help you? ➤ A Presidential Youth Employment Intervention: President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on young people to register for the new SA Youth service network on the SAYouth.Mobi platform (available data-free) to help them find jobs, learn how to prepare for the world of work, or, as the platform puts it, ‘how to start their own hustle’. ➤ A Social Employment Fund: This focuses on work that achieves the common good for communities, such as community safety, urban agriculture initiatives, and upgrading informal settlements. It is hoped private partners will create 50 000 jobs. ➤ An Innovation in Public Employment in the Metros programme: This calls on metros to create jobs with social value, such as employing the homeless and training young people with skills to digitise city records, in the hope of making them more employable in the private sector, says Philip. ➤ An initiative with the Department of Communication and Digital Technology: This is establishing a Broadband Access Fund to support connectivity for 50 000 households, which is critical in employment searches.

CAREERS

GET THE JOB

you want

Are you ready to move into another role but unsure how to market your skills to potential employers? Here’s how to sell yourself. TEXT DAVID FORD

T

he good news is that nine out of 10 employers prefer to hire candidates who have some work experience rather than none at all. Therefore, any experience you have will be an advantage. The key is to present this experience favourably and effectively on your CV. Here’s how.

1

CUSTOMISE YOUR CV FOR POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS

Employers can tell when they’re receiving a generic CV as opposed to one that has been tailored to suit the role they’re advertising. This can be a time-consuming process, but it’s worth the effort. Do some research about the company – discover what values are important to them, and reflect these in your CV. Then, be sure to relate all of the skills you mention to the role you are applying for. For instance, if you’re interested in a client-facing position, ensure you highlight examples of interpersonal skills on your CV, such as customer-service situations you have handled successfully in the past.

36

FEB/MARCH 2022 jetclub.co.za

2

ADVERTISE YOUR HARD SKILLS

Hard skills are specific abilities that an individual gains through experience. These are skills that can be demonstrated clearly and measurably. You need to be honest on your CV about the hard skills you have, but you must advertise them. Don’t assume that the employer ‘already knows’ or ‘doesn’t care’ about these skills – this is where your work experience can play strongly in your favour. Examples of hard skills you should advertise on your CV include computer skills (ability to work with Microsoft Office, proficiency with email, etc.) and organisational know-how (experience with point-of-sale systems, staff management or customer-service systems).

3 IMAGES: PEXELS, FREEPIK

EMPHASISE YOUR SOFT SKILLS

For those with limited work experience, it is a good idea to emphasise your soft skills on your CV. These skills refer more to the kind of person you are: your character traits and values, and how you relate to others and manage your relationships. There are different kinds of soft skills, and it is simple to relate these to some aspect of the work experience you already have. Think back on the different scenarios you have faced in the workplace so far, and try to find examples of soft skills such as good communication skills. These are necessary (and desirable) for any job role. Similarly, problem-solving skills, the ability to collaborate and any other people skills should feature prominently on your CV. Be sure to specifically mention any leadership experience you have (even if this is mentoring other entry-level workers at your current job) and give clear examples where your customer-service skills have shone through.

4

ENSURE THAT YOUR CV LOOKS PROFESSIONAL

Finally, be sure that your CV is professionally formatted and error-free. Companies tend to receive many applications, and a badly-formatted CV full of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors could rule you out at the first hurdle. Online applications such as Grammarly can help you check your language before you send out your CV.

If you’re now working from home due to the pandemic, the good news is that you may be able to deduct certain home-office expenses for tax purposes.

DEAR MR TAXMAN TEXT GLYNIS HORNING

W

orking from home is becoming the new normal for many salaried employees (those who get less than half their salary from commission). These workers have now joined the freelancers, independent contractors and commissionearners who’ve always worked this way. If you’re among them, you may be able to claim for expenses, provided you fulfil the requirements laid out by the South African Revenue Service (SARS), or the equivalent in your country. CONDITIONS FOR WORKING FROM HOME In South Africa the following requirements are set out in the Income Tax Act for salaried employees, namely: You practise a ‘trade’ – which includes ‘every profession, trade, business, employment calling, occupation or venture’. So, by simply being employed you satisfy this requirement, say tax consultant Laurence Mbokwane and tax attorney Elanie Nunez of Tax Consulting South Africa.

1

LIFE

2 3

Your expenses have been incurred in the production of your income. Your home office is not just a table in the corner of the lounge, but a room specifically equipped for you to do your job, which usually means it has a computer, printer, desk and chair. You use it regularly and exclusively to do your job – not to watch TV, sleep guests, or even to store non-work related books or paperwork. You perform more than 50% of your work duties in the home office (you work there for at least six months of the year).

4

IMAGE: FREEPIK

5

THE EXPENSES YOU CAN CLAIM FOR If you can prove to SARS your compliance on these points, you may be able to deduct the following expenses from your income: ➤ A portion of your rent of the premises. (Calculate this on the percentage of floor area your home office occupies in square metres, relative to the total area of your home.) ➤ The cost of repairs and maintenance to the property, relative to the home office. ➤ Expenses incurred in connection with the premises, such as bond interest, rates and taxes, levies, electricity and cleaning costs. ➤ Cost of wear and tear on office equipment that you own. (SARS lists depreciation rates on computer equipment and office furniture on its website.) ➤ The costs you incur in running your home office, such as cellphone, bandwidth, fibre, internet and stationery, aren’t specified in the Income Tax Act,

MONEY

SARS requires that you retain records for five years after filing a tax return. says Mbokwane, and SARS advises that these must be reimbursed by your employer. However, ‘commissionearners, sole proprietors and independent contractors will be able to deduct most of their business expenses,’ he says. HOW TO CLAIM To claim for your home office deduction if you’re a salaried employee, you need documents proving you’re entitled to it. • Get a letter from your employer confirming that you’re allowed to work from home and stating the reasons why. • Keep a running spreadsheet of the days you work at home (as opposed to from your employer’s office) and keep careful records and details. • Retain all the invoices and statements of your expenses. • Have a building plan of the premises to indicate the floor area of your home office, and photographs. You will need all this documentation when you fill in your claims, and may need to produce them if audited, says Nunez. This will happen if SARS decides to examine your tax return for the year more closely, to verify that your income and deductions are accurate, and this is more likely if you make home-office deductions. (SARS has said it will work hard to detect non-compliance.)

BE ORGANISED Carry a separate wallet for slips from work expenses, and empty that each day into a labelled box or folder. Keep separate folders for each receipt category, such as equipment, repairs and stationery. SARS requires that you retain records for five years after filing a tax return. Nunez and Mbokwane warn that claiming for a home office deduction can have adverse Capital Gains Tax implications if you own your home and later sell it, so discuss this with a tax consultant or accountant.

NEED TO KNOW DATES: The 2022 tax year is 1 March 2021 to 28 February 2022; the 2021 tax year is 1 March 2020 to 28 February 2021. Individual tax filing dates were 1 July to 23 November 2021, and for provisional taxpayers, 1 July 2021 to 31 January 2022.

BOUNDARIES

&

After a breakup, you’ll inevitably have to deal with your ex, especially if you have children together. As a result, establishing clear boundaries is essential to maintaining good relationships with everyone involved. TEXT LISA WITEPSKI

I

n a relationship, there are three entities involved: you, your partner, and the relationship itself. But, while the relationship might be entirely separate from the people in it, it’s made up of their hopes and dreams. That’s what makes transitioning from partner to ex so difficult, explains relationship coach Steph Dawson Cosser.

your ex

THE BENEFITS OF BOUNDARIES Boundaries are guidelines, rules and limits that a person sets for themselves to determine acceptable and appropriate behaviour from others. Setting and observing boundaries promotes a pleasant and healthy relationship while it endures and after it ends. However, when boundaries are ignored, issues of power imbalances may arise. ‘Although our boundaries are invisible, we are very aware of them from an emotional point of view,’ Steph says. ‘So, when someone transgresses a boundary, we feel that we have been disrespected.’ The result? A dysfunctional relationship that makes it hard for the two of you to get along, and this can ultimately affect your children. >>

Although our boundaries are invisible, we are very aware of them from an emotional point of view.

WHAT DO UNHEALTHY BOUNDARIES LOOK LIKE?

1

The inability to say no. For example, allowing your ex to come over unannounced even when you don’t want them to.

2

Being overly reliant on your ex’s perspective. For example, always going to them for financial or career guidance.

3

Oversharing personal information. This includes allowing them to check your emails or phone messages.

4

Being overly interested in their problems. For example, asking them about their lives and giving them relationship advice.

LIFE

PSYCHOLOGY

HOW TO IMPOSE BOUNDARIES Imposing boundaries isn’t merely a way to protect yourself; if you share children, it’s also about making your kids feel that their parents have created a safe space for them,

even though the relationship has ended. This begins with you, says Steph. ‘Unless you know your strengths and weaknesses, what you like and dislike, you won’t know where your boundaries begin and end, or how to enforce them.’

Spending time getting to know yourself, learning to trust your instincts and being gentle on yourself as you discover who you really are can often be the first steps towards beginning to set healthier boundaries and then implementing them.

➤ State how you feel about the important issues. For example, do you feel comfortable with sharing friends, or would you prefer to start new friendships? ➤ Social media can be tricky. You might agree that this is a no-go zone for both of you. ➤ Acknowledge that this is a difficult process. At some

42

point, both of you will start taking strain. Let your ex know when you have reached this point. ➤ Politeness and respect are non-negotiable. If you share children, your ex will be in your life forever, which can be difficult if you no longer have positive feelings towards them. However,

FEB/MARCH 2022 jetclub.co.za

treating each other well will make the situation much easier – but if you find it difficult to be civil face to face, agree on an alternate form of communication. ➤ Ask a mediator to get involved if emotions are running high. They’ll be able to give objective input and guidance.

hile many parents may feel anxious about their teen dating, it’s important to remember that this is a perfectly normal and healthy part of adolescence. In fact, experts agree that dating helps teenagers build social and relationship skills. ‘As kids enter the teenage years,

hormones kick in, and young people naturally become more aware of their attraction to others,’ explains Dr Esther Price, a Johannesburg-based clinical psychologist. ‘Teen dating also offers the next step in learning about trust, care, identity, conflict and relating healthily to a romantic partner,’ she adds.

A WHOLE NEW WORLD…

Parents also need to recognise that today’s teen dating scene differs significantly from that of previous generations. ‘Today’s children start dating earlier,’ explains Price. Cellphones and the dominance of social media have also changed the teen dating experience.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY

A teenager’s brain tends to be more impulsive, and their regulating skills are not yet fully developed, explains Price. ‘Thus, it’s harder for them to resist certain urges and to navigate some of the challenges that come with dating.’ Therefore, it is critical to foster a caring and supportive dialogue with your teen around dating, sex and relationships. Initiating open and ongoing conversations around the pros and cons of sex is equally important. However, if you struggle to communicate with your teen, you can access help, information and resources online or call the Jet Club Personal Health Advisor for support services.

DEFINING DATING RULES Parents also need to guide and set limits for teens. For

Parents have to find ways of being open and non-judgemental so that they can help set boundaries in a way that doesn’t stop their kids from communicating with them. DR ESTHER PRICE

instance, Price recommends teens only start dating when they are emotionally mature and ready to manage the pressures and responsibilities of dating. She suggests the age of 16 as this is when most teens start showing an interest in dating. Boundaries must also be highlighted. ‘They protect teenagers from being hurt, manipulated and taken advantage of in a relationship,’ explains Price. This is important given that statistics indicate that one in three teenagers and young adults

between the ages of 16 and 24 have experienced some kind of abusive dating situation, adds Price.

A SOURCE OF SUPPORT

‘Parents have to find ways of being open and non-judgemental so that they can help set boundaries in a way that doesn’t stop their kids from communicating with them,’ she explains. This will help nurture an open, respectful, and trusting parent-child dynamic, allowing you to best support and guide your teen.

‘KEEP INTIMACY ALIVE’

‘Intimacy is your deepest connection to your partner,’ says Tracy Ziman Jacobs, a relationship and intimacy coach. It is sometimes mistaken for intercourse. There are five types of intimacy that she believes couples should develop: Physical intimacy includes everything from holding hands and cuddling to kissing. Emotional intimacy is feeling safe enough to share your innermost feelings in order to be a supportive partner. Intellectual intimacy is the ability to share your thoughts and ideas, for example, discussing the news, work issues or brainstorming. Spiritual intimacy can include connecting with your partner through faith. Social intimacy involves things you enjoy doing as a couple such as cooking together.

‘Steer clear of processed food.’

A heart-healthy diet is one low in salt (which is associated with high blood pressure, a serious risk factor for cardiovascular disease), as well as cholesterol and saturated fats. Avoid processed foods like deep-fried foods, as these usually have a high salt content and contain hydrogenated fats (also called trans fats), which contribute to heart disease. Up your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables and omega-3-rich fish like salmon and mackerel, which are heart-healthy. Avoid or limit red meat. It is also very important to get screened for diabetes, exercise regularly (at least three times a week), stop smoking and maintain a healthy weight (a BMI of between 17 and 25). Stress (especially chronic stress) may put us at increased risk of heart attack, as it leads to unhealthy levels of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which could adversely affect our heart. THE SLEEP EXPERT

‘Cut back on the booze.’

Never consume alcohol within one hour of bedtime. It may help you to feel drowsy initially, but it disrupts sleep in the second half of your sleep cycle. More importantly, if you’re a snorer, alcohol can depress breathing even more and cause the development of sleep apnoea, a condition characterised by pauses in breathing. Long-term complications of sleep apnoea include obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure. If you want to sleep more soundly, cut down on alcohol (or, better still, stop drinking it altogether), and also only exercise in the morning (exercising before bedtime can cause you to become overstimulated). Make time for leisure, stay away from stimulating technology (your computer, phone or TV) for at least 90 minutes before sleep time, wake at the same time every morning (including weekends), and don’t allow yourself more than eight hours in bed. ‘Eat colourful food.’

Deeply coloured fruit and vegetables provide us with the essential micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) needed to maintain health. The pigments that give foods their distinctive colour contain phytochemicals like antioxidants, which slow down ageing and disease onset, and improve general health. Think yellow bananas, orange papayas and butternut, purple beetroot, blueberries, red peppers and strawberries, and dark-green veggies. Portion control is also essential for longevity, so ensure that your daily calorie intake doesn’t soar to unhealthy levels, causing you to gain weight. Excess weight is a risk factor for chronic lifestyle diseases like diabetes and heart disease. Kelly Lynch, registered dietician

‘Drink enough water, stress less.’

Drinking six to eight glasses of water a day is essential to maintaining health as it helps your body flush out the toxins that prevent it from functioning and repairing itself optimally. It’s also very important to keep your stress levels down. Cortisol and adrenaline – hormones your body produces when stressed – are cardio- and neurotoxic (meaning they impact the health of your heart and nervous system), while also causing elevated blood pressure, a risk factor for stroke and heart disease.

Cortisol suppresses the growth hormone and opposes the immune-enhancing and anti-cancer effects of DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone). It also increases body-fat percentage and promotes insulin resistance. Take short naps, spend quality time with friends, develop hobbies and interests, keep a check on your finances, meditate, develop time-management techniques, get moving, change your diet, smile, think positively, stop smoking, communicate clearly, learn to assert yourself positively, feel good about yourself, learn to express your anger respectfully, don’t rehash past mistakes

and failures. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water! Dr Craige Golding, specialist physician at the Integrative Medical Centre >>

THE GP

‘Have fun.’

Advances in medicine and healthcare over the past 100 years have played an enormous role in improving people’s lives. Life expectancy is increasing, especially in developing countries. The harms of smoking, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are well documented and, as a healthcare professional, it would be remiss of me not to encourage patients to address these issues. But one aspect that is overlooked and one I believe in is people should have fun. Having fun gives fulfilment to life. Selfactualisation, happiness, loving relationships, caring for oneself and others, taking time out, job satisfaction, being connected to the world around us, engaging with life and trying to enjoy it as much as possible, all make our time on earth much more satisfactory. There is more and more evidence that people who feel fulfilled live happier and longer lives. So, while giving up smoking (better yet, never starting), maintaining a healthy weight and being physically active are important, don’t forget to also have fun. THE DENTIST

‘Only floss between the teeth you want to keep.’

Flossing is just as important for oral hygiene as brushing twice a day, as it’s the most effective way of removing plaque from between teeth, where your toothbrush can’t reach. When you brush your teeth, you are only cleaning about 20% of your teeth’s surfaces. So without flossing, 80% of your teeth are not being cleaned and this can lead to dental health problems. Flossing daily removes plaque and food particles between and below the gum line. If there is plaque left between teeth and near gums, it can cause inflammation. This is the first phase of gum disease, called gingivitis. If gingivitis is not taken care of, it may develop into periodontitis, a severe stage of gum disease. So, flossing is important if you want to keep your natural teeth all through your life. An old dentist proverb goes: ‘You don’t have to floss between all your teeth, just the ones you want to keep!’ If you’re not sure how to floss correctly, ask your dentist or oral hygienist. ‘Keep the curve.’

The worst thing for your back is to sit all day long. And, unfortunately, most of us are guilty of doing this. Not only is this bad for your health generally, it’s also terrible for your back. Human beings are not designed to sit on chairs all day, and most people sit incorrectly, even on ergonomically designed chairs. The result is weakened, fatigued tissues in the lower back and buttocks, and a stiff back, which will most likely lead to injury down the line. The correct way to sit is to always make sure that there is a slight concave curve in your lower back. To encourage this curve, shift your butt all the way to the back of the seat, as far as it will go, so your behind is actually providing support to your back. Conversely, when your tailbone is tucked under, it robs your back of support. I encourage clients to keep a note stuck to their computer screen with the words ‘Keep the curve’, so they are reminded to sit correctly. It’s also important to maintain this lower-back curve whenever you’re exercising or picking something up off the ground – in which case you should always squat, with your back at a 45-degree angle. Never, ever bend over. Dr Guy Ashburner, registered osteopath

THE DERMATOLOGIST

‘Use SPF 50, every day.’

Nothing will ever beat the benefits you get from the daily use of sunscreen (SPF 50 with full UVA protection). It protects against ageing and skin cancer, and there is no cosmetic that can achieve that with the same certainty. The earlier you start, the better, and teach your kids to do the same – make it a routine like brushing teeth, as prevention is always better than cure. Take care choosing the right product. Find a good-quality base that you like (e.g. a lotion, cream or spray), then just stick with it. The difference will show in your skin: fewer age spots and wrinkles, and a much lower risk of skin cancer. What more could you want from a routine that takes about a minute of your time? We all love the escape music gives us, but turning up the volume on your earphones may result in hearing damage. TEXT ANNE HAHN

A

World Health Organization (WHO) study estimated that in 2015 over a billion young people worldwide were at risk of developing hearing loss because of listening to loud music. About 50 percent of people aged 12 to 35 are putting their hearing at risk because of loud sound, mainly through personal audio devices like smartphones. A 2021 WHO report predicted that one in four people (about 2.5 billion) will have some form of hearing loss by 2050. Since prevention is better than cure, take action now.

EARLY HEARING LOSS

Audiologist Roxanne Kohne, branch manager of the Ear Institute, Cape Town, says hearing loss is rising worldwide. In terms of early hearing loss, she says she mainly sees young adults with

noise-induced hearing loss from their youth. ‘Some parents do bring in their younger children (aged seven to 16 years) for hearing tests as they’re concerned about excessive noise exposure. But, most of the time, their hearing is still within normal limits, and that is the perfect opportunity to educate and advise the youth about healthy listening habits.’

THE DANGERS OF TOO LOUD, TOO LONG

The WHO campaign ‘Make Listening Safe’ states that it is not only the volume level but the length of listening time that causes the damage. They advise a maximum decibel (dB) level of 85 for any sound, but other studies suggest a range of 65 to 85 dB is safest. Roxanne says, ‘The loudness determines the time one can expose one’s ears to loud sound, without causing harm. The louder the dB level, the shorter the exposure time. It’s difficult to give an exact “safe” period without knowing the dB levels, so I always inform parents that they shouldn’t hear the sound coming from their child’s headphones; if they can, then it is too loud. I encourage listening breaks as opposed to continuous listening. I think two hours continuously is safe at a low level before a break.’

IMAGES: PEXELS

EARBUDS VS HEADPHONES?

Is there a difference between earbuds and headphones in terms of hearing damage? ‘Headphones are better as they do not exert as much sound pressure into the ear canal as

the insert earbuds do,’ says Roxanne. So when using earbuds, be aware that the volume should be lower and listening period shorter.

SETTING HEALTHY NOISE-LEVEL LIMITS

Try using sound-level measuring apps to set noiselevel limits. You can download Sound Meter and Noise Detector for Android or NIOSH Sound Level Meter for iOS for free. ‘While not 100% accurate, the apps do provide insight into dB levels,’ says Roxanne. ➤ Asking a young adult to refrain from visiting noisy entertainment environments isn’t completely realistic. Instead, educate them about earplugs and other excellent custom noise protection that is available.

share a bedroom. We’ve put together 10 tips to help you create individual areas that will allow each child to have space for personal reflection and development. Happy decorating!

2

DOUBLE UP

Where possible, let each child have their own items such as a bed, lamp and storage so that everything doesn’t have to be shared. By kitting out the bedroom with multiples, each child will enjoy a sense of ownership. And it will avoid unnecessary outbursts.

DIVIDE TO CONQUER

Placing a simple room divider or large bookshelf in the middle of a bedroom is a great way to separate the room without breaking the bank. This way, each child will have their own space and privacy to do their activities or relax.

3

HANG A CURTAIN

4

MAKE IT PERSONAL

Another affordable way to give each child privacy is to put up curtains around the beds, which can be drawn, for instance, when one child wants to sleep, and the other is still busy with homework or would like to read before bedtime.

7

UP, UP AND AWAY

Gain extra floor space by utilising the walls where you can. Floor-to-ceiling shelving, for instance, is a great way to add loads of storage. Or how about wall-mounted, fold-away desks?

Allow each child to add personal items, which reflect their style or hobbies, to their section of the room. For example, they could have different bedding in complementary colours, have their name stencilled on the wall or a place to stack toys.

5

INVEST IN MULTIPURPOSE FURNITURE

IMAGES: GALLO IMAGES/GETTY IMAGES,, UNSPLASH, SUPPLIED

If there is a budget, use it for furniture pieces that can double up, for example a bed that has storage space underneath it or in the headboard.

6

SECTION LIFE ARTICLE HOME

8

EQUAL SPACE

To avoid arguments, always make sure the room is divided equally.

9

CLEVER CONFIGURATION

Smart room configurations can help you win valuable space and create privacy. Use opposite ends of the room for each child, beds with back-toback headboards or high beds with a workspace underneath.

PROVIDE AMPLE STORAGE

Storage, like a shelf, cabinet or woven basket, is a must. By creating a small area with storage for your children’s items (add a little rug or bean bag), you’re not only solving the mess problem but also carving out a small space for them to enjoy together.

Dino Storage Trunk R19999

10

OPT FOR MINIMAL DÉCOR

Instead of a theme, decorate a shared room using colours and/or patterns. Doing this creates a more cohesivelooking whole, and it will certainly be easier than trying to fit dinos and Princess Ella on the same wall. Make it fun by allowing the kids to each choose a colour or pattern and then find a way to combine it all. Pinterest is an excellent source of inspiration. Plus, it will only cost a tin or two of paint and some masking tape.

Slowly whisk in the hot milk mixture, being careful not to scald the eggs. (This is called ‘tempering’ the eggs). 5. Strain the custard mixture into a jug and scoop out any foamy bits floating on top. (You can use a blowtorch to lightly ‘kiss’ the surface of the custard to remove any rogue bubbles.) Set aside to cool to room temperature. 6. Pour the custard mixture on top of the caramel in the ramekins, leaving a 1cm gap at the top. 7. Place the ramekins on a wire rack set in a roasting tin and

pour in enough water to come halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Cover the roasting tin with foil. 8. Bake the crème caramels for 25 to 35 minutes or until they are set but wobble when given a slight shake. (If they’re overcooked, the custard will be too firm and there will be a lot of air bubbles around the sides). 9. Remove the roasting tin from the oven and take the crème caramels out of the water bath. Set aside to cool a little, then either serve warm or place in the fridge to chill. 10. To serve, run a small knife around the edge of the custard to release it from the ramekin. Carefully flip it onto a serving plate and lift off the ramekin, allowing the caramel to spill over the side. Serve immediately.

Nothing says ‘I love you’ quite like delicious homemade heart-shaped cookies. And they’re simple and fun to make with your children.

2¾ cup all-purpose flour ½ tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature ¾ cup sugar 1 large egg 1½ tsp pure vanilla extract Toppings:

4 large egg whites 4 cups icing sugar 1 tsp lemon juice Food colouring in desired colours Sprinkles ➤ How to make it: 1 Whisk together flour, baking

powder and salt in a large bowl. 2 In another large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy using an electric mixer or whisk. 3 Add the egg and vanilla to the butter mixture.

4 Gradually add the flour mixture, until just blended. 5 Shape dough into two disks and roll each out on wax paper to a thickness of 4mm. 6 Chill until firm: 30 minutes in the refrigerator or 15 minutes in the freezer. 7 Heat oven to 180°C. 8 Line baking sheets with parchment paper. Using a heartshape cookie cutter, cut out the cookies. 9 Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until cookies are golden brown on the edges. 10 Allow to cool on sheets for

5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool down. 11 Now, beat the egg whites on high speed until foamy. 12 Switch to low speed and gradually sift the sugar into the egg whites until incorporated. 13 Add the lemon juice and beat on high speed until the icing is thick and forms stiff peaks. 14 Add the food colouring if you’re using one colour for the whole batch. If you want to use a variety of colours, separate quantities of icing into different bowls and add the various colours to each bowl. 15 Smooth icing on cookies with a spoon or piping bag and decorate your cookies with sprinkles.

Blue, pink and yellow felt (or colours of your choice) Thread to match colours of felt Needle Stuffing material – this can also be scrap fabric Glue

➤ How to make it: 1 Cut squares from your felt.

These can be any size you like (cutting squares first will make it easier to draw a heart). 2 Draw hearts on the squares. 3 Cut two big equal-size hearts for each ornament. 4 Then cut two smaller hearts in a different coloured felt. 5 Using the thread, stitch the two hearts together. Keep the stitches an equal distance

apart for a neat finish. 6 Continue stitching until you reach two centimetres before the first stitch you made (so you have a small opening). 7 Use the opening to insert stuffing in the heart. 8 When you have filled the heart, continue to stitch the heart closed. 9 Finish your ornament by glueing the little hearts onto the big hearts.

I’ll carry the shopping bag,’ said Alex. So Alex and his mother set off. Alex ran ahead of his mother on the well-trodden path. It was a lovely day. The sun was shining through the pine trees, and onto the pine nuts that had fallen to the ground. Alex picked one up. ‘Look, Mom. What is this?’ he asked. ‘It’s a pine nut,’ said Mom. ‘It looks as if it has a wing,’ said Alex. ‘That’s so it can float on the wind and find a good place to grow into another pine tree,’ said Mom. ‘All these pine nuts on the

So Alex picked up lots of pine nuts and put them in the shopping bag. As they walked along, Alex noticed the sun reflecting off some stones. He picked one up. ‘Look at this brown stone, Mom,’ he said. ‘It is so smooth.

Then Alex saw some wild blue flowers next to the path. ‘Look at these flowers, Mom,’ said Alex. ‘They’re the same colour as the sky.’ ‘They are little wild flowers, and they’re facing the sun,’ said Mom. Alex picked one. ‘Do you think Dad would like this blue flower for his birthday, Mom?’ he asked. ‘Maybe,’ said Mom. Alex put the little blue flower in the shopping bag. When they got home, Mom baked the birthday cake and Alex took the pine nuts and the smooth stone and the little blue flower out of the shopping bag. ‘Oh, no! Look,’ said Alex, ‘the little blue flower is curled up, and its face is closed.’ ‘Yes,’ said Mom. ‘Wild flowers like to show their faces to the sun, and they like to stay in the ground.’ ‘Oh,’ said Alex. ‘Why don’t you draw a picture for Dad for his birthday?’ said Mom. ‘Good idea,’ smiled Alex. He fetched his crayons and some paper to draw a picture for Dad. He drew a house with a red roof. Then he drew a big green tree next to the house. He added a garden path all the way from the front door to the edge of the page, and he drew blue flowers all along the path. He drew the blue sky at the top of the page and also a big yellow sun. Then he drew green grass at the bottom of the page. Finally he drew Dad, Mom and himself standing on the grass. Then Dad came home from work. ‘Happy birthday, Dad,’ said Alex and gave him his presents. First he gave Dad the pine nuts. ‘I love pine nuts,’ said

Dad. Next he gave Dad the smooth brown stone. ‘What a special stone!’ said Dad. ‘I’ll keep it in my pocket for luck!’ Then he gave Dad the drawing. ‘Oh!’ said Dad. ‘This is our house and our tree and here we are! You, Mom and me. And I really like the blue flowers along the garden path.’ ‘Those blue flowers are the same blue as the sky,’ said Alex. ‘Thank you for my birthday presents, Alex,’ said Dad, and he gave Alex a big hug. ‘I think we should plant some wild blue

flowers,’ said Dad. ‘We’ll plant them all along our garden path, just like the flowers in your picture.’ ‘Good idea!’ said Alex. ‘I’ll help you plant them, Dad!’ After supper Mom lit the candles on Dad’s cake. Dad blew them all out in one big whoosh! Alex and Mom sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Dad. ‘I love finding presents for you, Dad,’ said Alex with a great big smile.

What the stars have in store for you and your loved ones this month. TEXT TANYA OBREZA

21 March to 20 April March sends a tremble through your sector of secrets, hinting at hidden romance. Should the affair go public, it’s good news for some and disastrous for others. Of course, singles have a better time of it. But whether single or settled, this month finds you in the mood to spend. At work, you attract influential company. A temptation to mix business with pleasure, perhaps? It’s your call.

TAURUS

21 April to 20 May So many areas of your life have been left simmering, with your career also in the melting pot. Take heart. March encourages physical, mental and spiritual renewal, this time with you as an active contributor. So many outworn habits and attitudes have to go. And when feeling this vibrant, it stands to reason that your magnetism is at its full strength. Embrace life, and it will love you back.

GEMINI

21 May to 21 June Gather your talents and prepare for career commitments, Gemini. Whether it’s a new job or starting a business, you’re capable of handling anything. Just remember to enjoy the moment. March carries considerable energy,

70

so there’s also time for play. Make the most of invitations, but for couples, a partner must offer you independence. As for finances, work harder to spend harder.

CANCER

22 June to 22 July Sometimes the best form of defence is attack. Even so, you could be opting for overkill this month. Sure, be assertive if others are out to undermine you, but what they’re saying can’t all be wrong. Compromise is key. Solitude, meditation and reflection – these are the things that would benefit you most. Your talents haven’t been forgotten. Plans for your moment of glory are underway.

LEO

23 July to 22 August While half of the zodiac might be ready to self-destruct, that doesn’t mean you have to join the queue. Most problems arise through people’s unwillingness to back off, so it’s up to you to lead by example. It’s just a case of powering into top gear and crashing through any self-doubts. Meanwhile, a very friendly Venus is networking on your behalf, so make the most of new introductions

FEB/MARCH 2022 jetclub.co.za

VIRGO

23 August to 22 September Logic and instinct have

had their differences lately, but they finally reach a truce, resulting in peace of mind. Many Virgos find themselves in an emotional state of grace, bordering on spiritual ascendancy. Friends and family could have something special in store for you, so trust them. But as old habits die hard, trusting someone else’s plans may take getting used to. Succumb and enjoy.

LIBRA

23 September to 22 October Many people believe the more you do, the more you get to do. Over the next year, the cosmos rewards many of your previous efforts. You’ll be super busy, but should the unexpected happen, don’t fight it. You’ve been waiting for something big to happen and, finally, Jupiter creates new business opportunities. Planetary influence also steps up the social pace. What follows could be lasting love or friendship.

SCORPIO

23 October to 21 November Often, life’s chaos distracts us. We’re forever planning for the future, forgetting that in order to manifest what we want, we must live in the present. Of course, it’s the worry that usually clouds our judgement. March reminds you not to fret. Mostly, you have all you need, and you’re moving in the right

ARIES

direction. Everything will fall into place soon enough as past struggles are replaced by growing optimism and fun.

SAGITTARIUS

22 November to 21 December Feeling confident? Great, because you now finally get to call the shots. No matter what mayhem the cosmos creates for the rest of us this month, most Sagittarians should have fun, achieve an important ambition or rise over any opposition. But not without some effort. Although auspicious planets surround you in March, you can’t expect everything to fall in your lap. If you want something, go after it.

CAPRICORN

22 December to 19 January March promises increased cash flow. Although the cosmos is keen to squander money on your behalf, if the budgets tally, then spend guilt-free. If single, there’s a sense of adventure in the air. For dissatisfied couples, it’s more of a make-or-break time. At work, retraining or networking allows you to rediscover your true potential. It’s all a matter of making the right contacts and then choosing the right direction.

AQUARIUS

20 January to 18 February A glow of sensual satisfaction replaces professional interests with playful passions restoring morale. If in a relationship and emotional barriers have become too high, it is time to dismantle them. Be honest with those you love, especially after the 20th, when a fateful meeting could prove tempting. Singles also throw caution to the wind. Clandestine affairs, however, could leave you exposed.

TREVOR NOAH, 20 FEBRUARY 1984

PISCES 19 February to 20 March

At last, Pisces, here’s a year that holds the promise of success. So, when unexpected offers come in, you’ll be keen to take advantage. Your optimism and determination also make a powerful package. By July, prosperity surrounds your home and family – care for a timely bonus or good fortune? The sale or purchase of property could also help to increase wealth. Meanwhile, love interests also flourish. Singles are offered more choice, and couples become more intimate. Make room in your schedule for a trip for two.

HOW DID YOUR LOVE FOR ENTERTAINING COME ABOUT? My upbringing really influenced me. I come from a musical family; music was always around me, especially at church. That’s where I got my first big platform to sing for a crowd and discovered I had a gift. My parents were choral singers back in the day, and my grandmother was one of the original members of Mahotella Queens.
