T’S BEEN ANOTHER wonderful year of putting together Private Edition for which our talented journalists scout the planet for extraordinary stories that offer inspiration and hope in a world that sometimes feels hard to live in. In this issue we celebrate those who continue to strive for excellence, and are committed to making a difference in the world through their craftsmanship and innovation. In ‘Brave New (African) World' (page 34), we meet two local chefs, Wandile Mabaso and Ryan Cole, who are on a mission to reform restaurants by creating dishes that tap into what makes us truly South African. Think Durban-inspired tuna tartare made with sugar cane, tamarind and coconut, available at Cole’s newly opened restaurant, Coy, in Cape Town. Or Krugersdorp Tongue and Cheek at Mabaso’s esteemed restaurant in Johannesburg, Les Créatifs. It took 233 days sailing non-stop and alone, without the use of modern technology, for Kirsten Neuschäfer to become the first woman and first South African to win the iconic Golden Globe Race. In ‘A Maiden Voyage’ (page 42), we chat to Neuschäfer about what it took to complete the race, for which only 16 sailors from around the world qualified, and only three finished with her as the winner. In ‘Home, but Better,’ we meet the CEO behind the successful luxury travel group, Tintswalo Collection. The familyowned business has made its mark on the local luxury hospitality industry with exceptional lodges including the iconic Tintswalo Atlantic on the slopes of Chapman’s Peak Drive. At this time of year the atmosphere shifts and we start raising a glass of something special, be that artisanal spirits crafted in small batches or opulent wines that tell a story of terroir and tradition. ‘Sublime Sips’ (page 60), we explore the world of premium wines and spirits that have taken years of dedication to perfect – those sublime liquids that will enhance any occasion or make the perfect gift. When it comes to gifting, our annual roundup of beautiful objects d’art in ‘Luxury Unwrapped’ (page 28) is sure to provide inspiration, whether you’re looking for that perfect jewellery piece, a Great Gatsby-inspired pen or a timepiece that pays homage to space exploration. Finally, a toast to you, our readers who inspire us to continue seeking out the unique stories of innovation and excellence that make the world a brighter place.

REFLECTIONS ON THE YEAR T H AT WA S
YAEL GEFFEN CEO
AS WE REFLECT ON 2024, IT’S CLEAR THAT DESPITE ONGOING CHALLENGES, IT’S BEEN A YEAR OF ENCOURAGING SHIFTS AND EMERGING OPPORTUNITIES IN THE PROPERTY LANDSCAPE.
F
OR SEVERAL YEARS NOW, pressured market conditions have tested our adaptability. Higher interest rates, fluctuating housing demand and changing buyer expectations have required us to be agile and forward-thinking. Ongoing economic pressures, compounded by high interest rates, have impacted affordability, especially for first-time buyers and, for many South Africans, the increased cost of financing has made homeownership a more onerous proposition, with higher monthly bond repayments stretching beleaguered budgets even further. Even those looking to upgrade or expand their real estate portfolios have been discouraged or have become overly cautious. And, while some areas like the Western Cape have enjoyed price growth this year, property values in other areas have shown much slower – and even negative – growth due to broader economic challenges and subdued demand. Furthermore, rising property taxes and maintenance costs have further impacted homeowners, leading some potential buyers and investors to reconsider their options. However, despite these hurdles, we’re now also seeing emerging opportunities and more than a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. National property inflation is higher than it’s been since 2021 and we’ve finally turned a corner with a drop in interest rates, although more is required before we see any significant impact. And let us not forget that we’ve enjoyed a sustained reprieve from loadshedding, which has significantly boosted investor confidence and prompted predictions of 2% GDP growth for South Africa.
16
FIN_CEO letter.indd 16
With this in mind, I think we can afford to be optimistic about 2025, especially if we stay on this upward trajectory, albeit a slow and gradual one. Heightened investor confidence is a much-needed shot in the arm for both commercial and residential property investments and also in new development across all sectors. In the residential market, another drop in the repo rate will go a long way in making buyers feel more financially secure, leading to greater demand for single-family homes and investors looking to enter the rental market or expand their portfolios. And, perhaps more importantly, we could start to see businesses begin to expand, which will not only ease the unemployment crisis, but also boost the commercial property sector. For investors, this translates into more reliable income streams and potential appreciation in property values, and for the economy, it will obviously be a lifeline. At the end of the day, an economic upturn with boosted investor confidence creates a strong, dynamic property market with ample opportunities for appreciation, development and rental income. Enough reason to anticipate a bright outlook for the new year.

STELLENZICHT’S ACHEULEAN RED IS A TASTE OF LUXURY WITH EVERY SIP Nestled in the heart of Stellenbosch, Stellenzicht Wines offers a unique blend of natural beauty and innovation. Committed to sustainable practices, this renowned estate combines tradition with modern winemaking techniques to create wines that capture the essence of its distinctive terroir. Stellenzicht’s Acheulean Red is a luxury wine with a bold character. Each cluster is handpicked in the cool early hours, ensuring only the finest fruit is selected. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cinsault berries undergo a seven-to-10-day whole-berry fermentation, while Shiraz whole bunches are given up to 14 days for a deeper, more expressive extraction. Acheulean Red matures for 18 months in a combination of 500-litre and 300-litre French oak barrels, with 40% new oak contributing to its refined structure. This flagship blend bursts with luxurious layers of red and black fruits, fine tannins and subtle oak – a complex, elegant wine that artfully balances fruity and savoury notes, promising to age gracefully for at least a decade. Cheers! stellenzicht.com
Luke Dale Roberts has known plenty of kitchen adventures, but a new one for him was having a baboon sneak in and make off with a tasty treat. Intermittent raids by crafty primates are a small price to pay for the opportunity to cook in the bush, though, says the award-winning chef, who is in his element at Mhondoro Safari Lodge, a luxurious spot for guests in the heart of the Waterberg’s 36 000-hectare Welgevonden Game Reserve. While his latest Cape Town venture, Salon, was recently named Africa’s Best New Restaurant at the 2024 World Culinary Awards, what attracted him to the Limpopo lodge was the chance to reimagine safari cuisine while spending time in a lush and abundant wilderness. Growing up in the comparatively tame English countryside, he says the location has touched him deeply. ‘There’s the silence of the bush, which is magical. I relish the peace and tranquillity, love seeing elephants drinking from the eco-friendly swimming pool, and it’s a great novelty going down into Mhondoro’s underground hide to watch animals at the watering hole, which is very calming and meditative.’ Mhondoro’s bushveld setting has also reconsolidated his primal, instinctual love of providing nourishment. ‘The style of food I adopt is often very closely linked to the place I’m cooking in. In a beautiful lodge surrounded by nature’s grandeur, my instinct is to cook elegant, luxurious, comforting food. It gets cold at night, so you want to curl up by the fire and have a good glass of red and eat some really beautiful, nourishing and healthy.’ And, naturally, his dishes are as delicious as ever. ‘One game dish I’m doing is with either springbok or impala, served with roasted pears, a pear-and-honey jus and beetroot – the flavours are rich, beautiful and deep.’ And there’s a tasty lamb shank pithivier, a fancy pie, that’s served with rosemary and parmesan cream. Dale Roberts’ multi-course menus and wine pairings have raised the bar for safari cuisine in the region and are included in the accommodation rate at Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa, in addition to twice-daily guided game drives. mhondoro.com

One&Only Cape Town has long set the standard for resort lifestyle and high-class dining. Cue the arrival of One&Only Cape Town’s newest restaurant, ROOI. As a South African grillroom, ROOI aims to redefine the traditional dining experience, allowing local influences to shine through in the smallest details, from décor to menu. The name comes from the Afrikaans word for ‘red’, a colour associated with power, vitality and life, but it’s also the colour most associated with flames and fire. In this sophisticated dining space, guests can look forward to steaks, with multiple cuts of South African Wagyu, prime beef options and a few ‘ROOI Selects’ on the menu, which include the likes of aged mutton, Kalahari venison and masala-spiced kingklip. A variety of vegan and vegetarian options, using the country’s finest produce, are also available. Those looking to enjoy something from the sea can try the fresh grilled South Coast rock lobster or sensational flame-grilled tuna. A classic lamb shank potjie is also on offer, as are other South African favourites such as sweet and satisfying Hertzoggies or velvety malva pudding for dessert. The design and décor of the space blend local artistry with natural elements. Warm terracotta and copper tones, alongside soft limestone green, anchor the main dining area, while earthy shades ground the richer colours. Definitely worth a visit. oneandonlyresorts.com

The skeletonised symmetrical arches and lines from solid Au750 yellow gold reveal the black, translucent surface beneath, and are a nod to the Art Deco architecture of the Roaring Twenties. Shining green tsavorites on the cap and barrel reference the green light on the dock at Daisy Buchanan’s house – a symbol of hope for love-struck millionaire Jay Gatsby. For Montblanc’s Great Characters Homage to The Great Gatsby Limited Edition 100, the cone imitates the engraved screw cap of an Art Deco flask. ‘I
ASSUME THEY ALL THINK I’m a lunatic,’ says Cape Town chef Ryan Cole. ‘A bit off the wall is how most people probably think of me.’ Whatever ‘most people’ think, Cole, whose first restaurant, Salsify, opened six years ago, is on a quest to change perceptions of what South African dining is – and what an elevated African meal can be. At his new venture, Coy, he’s asked his chefs (those folks most likely to have first-hand accounts of his lunatic tendencies) to dig deep into their personal food memories and search for authentic expressions of Africa’s diverse culinary heritage. The restaurant occupies a seemingly implausible location, a veritable no-man’s-land between docks at the V&A Waterfront where harbour authorities can at any moment remove one of the pedestrian bridges, making it potentially confusing to reach. Cole worries that diners will literally get lost, but the potential adventure in that simply adds to the allure of finding a restaurant that epitomises the notion of hiding in plain sight. When you do arrive, the rewards are many. Enfolded by city, mountain and harbour views, it’s an astonishing ebony-hued space. Instead of the light, white-tablecloth formula associated with most fine-dining places, it’s dark, moody and full of texture.

ABOVE Coy’s meal journey kicks off with a snack platter of maize chips served with tahini, roasted shitake and red lentil dip, blatjang (chutney), atchar and cashews. The bread is fermented amadumbe sourdough, served with cultured butter and konfyt (jam). OPPOSITE PAGE At Coy, the goal is to achieve deliciousness rooted in culinary memories – here, that aim is achieved with a deceptively simple mussel dish, elevated with fennel, pine nuts, citrus and a Baharat spice blend.
Within this space, Cole is committed to showcasing African culinary flair in previously unimagined ways. ‘We’re putting Africa onto a pedestal – not looking towards France or elsewhere in the world.’ While Cole says it’s ‘incredible that so many Cape Town chefs are hitting great heights, knocking on the door of the World’s Top 50 Restaurants’, he believes there’s a paucity of high-end places where African cuisine is part of the conversation. At Coy he wants to ‘shine a spotlight on the continent’ and ‘explore our narrative’. Everything you eat here is inspired by Cole’s intension to make Coy ‘different’ from the rest. That means bravely swimming against the mainstream, ignoring trends and boldly turning away

from Eurocentric fine dining in favour of a more soulful, personal and unapologetically nostalgic culinary experience. He’s eager, too, to embrace the diversity of South African identities. ‘We’re a melting-pot nation, all very different. My mother’s Scottish and my father’s grandfather came from Ireland, but I’m as South African as the next South African.’ This identity mash-up, he says, defines who we are as a nation and creates maximal opportunity for discovery in the kitchen. Joining him on this mission are Teenola Govender and Geoffrey Abrahams, joined-at-the-hip head chefs who, like Cole, have something new to say about African cooking. ‘Teenola is Indian and I’m coloured,’ says Abrahams. ‘We each grew up with very different interpretations of what South African food is, but here we want to touch on the variety that exists as part of our melting-pot heritage, so it's not just braaivleis or potjie. We’re looking across the board at how food connects all of us as Africans.’ Their menus are concise, flavour-focused homages to Africa’s diversity, each dish inspired by a personal story or memory. Some of the elements are so familiar, so homegrown and unexpected, they’re borderline alarming. Like that oh-so-yellow seasoning Aromat (made in-house at Coy), which is used to bring a distinctive umami-ness to a beautiful vegetarian main course of mielie samp and chakalaka, something that’s quintessentially South African and intimately connected to the food memories of diverse people in contrasting contexts. This cheeky combination hits your tastebuds and drags you back in time while simultaneously letting your brain know that you’re experiencing newness: it’s nostalgia that feels like rocket science.
ISSUE 64
FIN_Tastings.indd 37
Abrahams calls it ‘craveability’. ‘That’s the big thing we wanted to achieve with our food. You don’t return to a restaurant because the concept is clever; you come back because you crave more of the food. We want every single dish to be something you can’t wait to come back and try again. You must wake up the day after dining here and think about returning for a dish that really hit the spot with its deliciousness.’ ‘We’re not reinventing the wheel, or changing the world,’ says Govender. ‘We simply want to present something different because our fine-dining scene is so saturated. And so very Eurocentric.’ That said, there are ample moments when what goes into your mouth at Coy does in fact suggest that the world has shifted off its axis slightly, that your understanding of what food can be has been altered. One such dish is Govender’s tuna tartare, a cold starter for which she referenced her childhood in Durban. ‘I wanted to showcase sugar cane, because of my memories of having fresh sugar-cane juice at the beachfront. So we’ve incorporated sugar cane, tamarind and coconut into this tuna dish as a way of showcasing flavours from my hometown.’ Cole calls the dish ‘inspired’. ‘It’s solid, clever, delicious. It’s a dish you absolutely want to eat again. It ticks all the boxes, and it’s something that – when I taste it – reminds me why I cook.’ That assessment of Govender’s seafood starter also neatly expresses why Cole is so loved by his peers. To young chefs, he’s not a lunatic, he’s an inspiration, someone willing to champion their creative impulses. ‘Some people cook for CVs, some cook for awards, but I cook because I love it,’ he says. ‘I’m 35 now, have worked in the

kitchen since I was 15 and I just love cooking. I love prepping. I love all the physical aspects, like service and putting dishes together and just being, like, “This is so delicious!”’ Someone who shares that passion and is similarly driven to pioneer what he calls ‘modernised African cuisine’ is Wandile Mabaso, a chef who grew up in Soweto. He discovered the power of food as a young boy who, out of necessity, taught himself to cook, and now owns and runs the much-lauded Sandton restaurant, Les Créatifs. Mabaso says everything he does is sparked by his love of creating a meal. ‘I believe cooking – like music and sport – is something that brings people together, unites different cultures, and can stop wars.’ He says he cooks because he loves using food to touch people’s hearts, connecting with them through the stories from his childhood that his dishes evoke. People who grew up in a township environment and who now come to his high-end restaurant often leave with tears in their eyes. He says it’s because the food sparks powerful memories. ‘I’ve travelled the world, cooked with the best. I don’t need to prove how good I am, or see how many awards I can win. It’s really about reaching within and telling stories about how I grew up, sharing the flavours of my childhood.’ At Les Créatifs, he brings his understanding of both classical and modern French technique to riff dishes that are steeped in tradition and have a deep heritage. One adored beef dish is his Krugersdorp Tongue and Cheek. It represents ‘those very cheap cuts of meat we ate, almost like street food’, he says, ‘but elevated to a high level’. Mabaso uses methods of
preparation that are ‘very technical and very French’ so that over many days and multiple cooking processes, he sends out tongue that’s been slow-braised in a rich beef broth and cut with spices to give it an ‘almost nostalgic braai flavour’. Alongside it are lush, very soft, moist beef cheeks that have been braised separately. And, on the side, there’s amadumbe, a starchy, potatolike indigenous tuber that’s popular among Zulu subsistence farmers. He uses it to make mash infused with puréed achar fermented in his own kitchen. ‘I use my grandmother’s achar recipe,’ he says. ‘As soon as you put that in your mouth, you get an explosion of flavour that reminds you where you are – and where you come from.’ He says that sense of a shared past is a key part of his cooking. ‘If you leave my restaurant without tears in your eyes, I haven’t achieved anything – no matter how good the food is, or how great the service was. If I don’t touch your heart, I feel like nothing’s been achieved. The only way to touch your heart is through emotions. And the only way to get to your emotions is by really taking you back, perhaps to that smile that reminds you of your grandmother when you were five years old.’ Sometimes it takes ‘just a single bite’, he says, ‘to make the memories come flooding back’. Like Cole and co., Mabaso is intentionally aiming to ‘incorporate more of Africa’ into his cooking.
‘IF YOU LEAVE WITHOUT TEARS IN YOUR EYES, I HAVEN’T ACHIEVED ANYTHING – NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE FOOD IS.’

OPPOSITE PAGE Wandile Mabaso says he learnt to cook out of necessity, and fell in love with the power of food to stir emotions. He also caters to vegans – this dish combines quinoa, sorghum and spring baby vegetables, and is served with pea shoots, red cabbage gelée and smoked basil oil.
He’s increasingly looking to our neighbours for inspiration, and to places farther north. Inspired by West Africa’s love of goat meat, he makes a dish he claims has converted many diners. ‘Some folks tell me they think they’re eating lamb, it’s so tender,’ he says. His secret is beautiful spicing using his own Cape Malay spice blend before cooking the meat super-slowly for many hours rather than boiling it as is usually done. He pairs the goat with sorghum which, he says, many South Africans associate with funerals, weddings and traditional rituals. ‘It’s cooked the way our grandmothers cooked it,’ he says, which is why he can’t take it off the menu. ‘Everybody is trying to be another Western or European restaurant, but we’re going the opposite way,’ says Mabaso. ‘I’m asking how much more authentic can I be? How much more can I discover from our African neighbours? My mission is

to really explore that. If I can get that right, I think we’ll have the whole world looking at us.’ That steadfast, earnest, energetic commitment to reconfiguring the culinary landscape is shared by the team at Coy, too. ‘It’s all about heroing this continent,’ Cole says. ‘Rather than shining a light on what the rest of the world is doing, we’re considering what we have here, and unearthing those flavours and dishes that we’re not showcasing. Because Africa is where it’s at. No-one goes to London to visit The South African Shop, and visitors to South Africa want to experience food from this continent.’ He believes the next evolution in South Africa’s rapidlychanging dining scene is underway. ‘In the coming years, we’re going to see a shift and the restaurant scene is going to move fast. There are dishes we haven’t even scratched the surface of yet, things we don’t even understand. We’ve got to be bolder and bigger and a bit braver.’

A MAIDEN
VOYAGE It took 233 days of sailing, non-stop and alone, and without the use of modern technology, for Kirsten Neuschäfer to become the first woman to win the iconic Golden Globe Race. WORDS LINDIWE MCITEKA

HAT’S THE ONE THING you instinctively knew how to do, before anyone taught you? For Pretoria-born Kirsten Neuschäfer, it was sailing. ‘I innately understood the wind, the water, how the sails work, the keel, and the pressure against the water without anyone

explaining it to me in the physics sense,’ she recalls. ‘I didn’t grow up sailing, but it was in me and always felt right to me.’ Kirsten had zero racing experience when she entered the Golden Globe Race, which is the world’s longest, non-stop, single-handed, round-the-world yacht race. They say a race is won before you leave the dock, and the one thing she did have, was years of

preparation through an unbridled sense of adventure, the grit to see things through and her experience as a skipper for deliveries and charters with over 300 000 kilometres covered offshore and in the Southern Ocean. Surprisingly, Kirsten grew up on a small holding on the outskirts of Pretoria, far from any ocean. ‘We spent a lot of time with animals and in nature and would hike in the Magaliesburg, go to the Kruger and down to the coast once or twice a year,’ she says. Her first access to sailing was on a dinghy in the Hartbeespoort Dam with family friends. She attributes her success in the sport to the completion of a dream her father had. ‘When he was young, my father wanted to sail around the world and had started building a boat before he met my mom. That dream fell by the wayside but I found old photos of them sitting on the unfinished boat in their bell bottoms and remember thinking how cool that was.’ Still, Kirsten’s earliest aspirations were far from the water. Her adventurous spirit led her on a gap year (that turned into five), working in the US, Canada and Europe doing all manner of jobs from wilderness guide to husky trainer, culminating in her cycling home to South Africa from Europe. Why fly when you can cycle? She was 22 at the time and her parents thought she had gone mad. ‘My mom, especially, was so stressed; we had no cellphones back in those days, so they never knew which country I was in or where I was sleeping,’ she recalls. Back on home soil, after an adventure of a lifetime, she decided to pursue sailing as a career. While there’s a lot of money to be made in the sailing and superyacht industries, even at entry-level, that was never the appeal for Kirsten. ‘I’ve used it as a profession to earn my living, yes, but it’s more for the joy of sailing, being close to nature and sailing as a sport,’ she asserts. Her favourite thing about sailing is the fact that you’re using pure elements to move between continents on a piece of plastic in an environment that humans don’t belong in. ‘It’s an incredible sense of freedom.’ THE ART OF WINNING The idea to enter the 2022 Golden Globe Race came from Kirsten’s desire for adventure and a challenge. Kirsten says, ‘I followed the 2018 Golden Globe Race and became increasingly enthralled by it. This was a true adventure race – celestial navigation, no instruments, no modern weather info. It seemed like just the thing I would want to do.’ The race is largely recognised as the most demanding exploit and human challenge for any individual in any sporting event on the planet. First established in 1968, the Golden Globe Race sees solo sailors competing to achieve the fastest time around the world via the five great Capes. Held every four years, the race pays homage to the sailing methods and rules from the original 1968 race: entrants may only use the same type or similar equipment and technology race patron Sir Robin Knox-Johnston used onboard his winning yacht of that year. Sailors may not enter any port, but are given the opporunity, albeit brief, to pass through certain checkpoints to hand over navigational notes, photos or letters. They may not receive any material assistance or additional sustenance at any time during the race. All of these are disqualifiable offences. Preparing a boat for an eight-month non-stop race is incredibly hard and physically demanding – and it’s what races

are won or lost on. ‘I’d done most of the work on the boat with my own hands, so I knew it inside out,’ Kirsten explains. ‘We took no shortcuts. If we upgraded something and it wasn’t good enough, we ripped it out and started again.’ The focus was on the boat’s strength rather than its speed for it to go the distance. ‘I had good experience in practising the seamanship required to preserve the boat and that was definitely a trump card for me and gave me immense confidence as a sailor.’ The race’s start and finish were at Les Sables-d’Olonne in France. Lanzarote (Canaries Islands), Table Bay (Cape Town) and Storm Bay (Hobart) were the checkpoints – proof-of-life pauses where the sailors would drift, do interviews with the organisers (without disembarking, of course) and hand over film and photo footage. With quite a few seasoned sailors on the roster of 16 in the 2022 race, competition was stiff. But Kirsten wasn’t unnerved by that. ‘I didn’t really focus much on the others before the race; however, the Frenchman, Damien Guillou was looking like the

the water to see if the whale would stay. It swam under me and turned over on its back to make eye contact. The longer I stayed in the water, the calmer we both got. I drifted with it for the best part of two hours. That was the most touching experience I’ve ever had.’ Kirsten’s sportsmanship was on full display during the race when fellow competitor Tapio Lehtinen reported his yacht had flooded from the stern and had sunk. Being the nearest yacht, she activated her emergency GPS and rerouted to rescue him.
most professional and favoured competitor. The UK’s Simon Curwen also turned out to be good competition. The better the competition, the more you’re pushed to be better yourself.’ Routine at sea was very important says Kirsten. ‘A lot of my day revolved around celestial navigation. You need to keep accurate time and we weren’t allowed modern or batteryoperated timepieces. I got the old-school SSB signal off the radio, set my wristwatch or chronometer, and did a morning sight on the sun. I would then do my calculations for my position line, and do the same routine at noon, then I’d have a more accurate route on my chart, so that was important. ‘To keep an accurate log, I wrote in my logbook at least once every hour, getting up during the night to do so. I spent time tweaking the sails, getting the boat going faster, doing maintenance and inspections. During calm weather, I’d jump over the side of the boat to check that nothing was growing on the hull because that slows you down a lot. And I would climb up on top of the mast to ensure there was no damage. You want to prevent catastrophic things happening by keeping an eye on everything, so that takes up most of your time.’ Eating well and getting enough sleep were also important. Nothing could be replenished during the nearly nine-month-long voyage. Kirsten’s diet consisted of rice, pasta, canned food, dried snacks and legumes. ‘I had some onions that lasted till the end, and I was given 100 jars of heat-preserved meals as a gift by a French chef. I also had fishing tackle in case I ran out of food or decided to fish, but I didn’t need it.’ Ironically, her worst days during the race weren’t about navigating rough seas but being becalmed. ‘I suffered two weeks with no wind and I couldn’t make the boat move, which was extremely frustrating,’ she recalls. ‘I knew I had been in the lead but I wasn’t sure anymore and staying positive became a real challenge.’ The important part of this experience was enjoyment says Kirsten. ‘You can’t be out there suffering the whole time. I didn’t want to go out there and say “that was a gruelling experience”. I wanted to say “this was amazing and enriching in every way”.’ Some of Kirsten’s best moments were encounters with wildlife, such as a young minke whale that had been swimming alongside her boat for some time. ‘I dropped sail and jumped into

LESSONS FOR LIFE After 233 days, 20 hours, 43 minutes and 47 seconds at sea solo, Kirsten crossed the finish line to win the race and mark her entry into the record books as the first woman to complete and win any round-the-world race via the great Capes. She also finished 79 days ahead of the inaugural winner Knox-Johnston. Of 16 sailors, only three completed the race. The rest dropped out because of breakage and two were disqualified because they had to stop and go ashore. As a solo sailor, you’re responsible for everything and have to complete the daily tasks that are crucial for navigation regardless of seasickness or bad weather. ‘That forces you to be completely self-sufficient.’ says Kirsten. ‘Winning felt fantastic! It’s an unforgettable moment when all the hard work pays off and a dream comes to an end in the best way possible,’ she beams. ‘Sailing taught me that when you think it’s too difficult to go on, you can still go on.’

LUXURY AND SERVICE THAT ELEVATE THE EXTRAORDINARY Steyn City is thrilled to announce the launch of the Steyn City Hotel by Saxon which has been accepted as one of the Leading Hotels of the World (LHW)
Steyn City.indd 16

What do you look for in a hotel? Are you all about comfort, seeking out sumptuous décor and plush furniture that makes your stay feel like an escape? Is convenience a major factor – do you want to be able to reach your destination quickly and easily? Or are you more focused on finding exciting ways to spend your downtime? Perhaps, most importantly it’s the personal touches the service, the knowing smile or greeting acknowledging that nothing is too much trouble – that differentiates your stay from any other.
The new Steyn City Hotel by Saxon ticks all of these boxes, and more – just as one would expect of an establishment that represents a collaboration between two of South Africa’s premium brands, Steyn City and Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa. The result is a stunning apartment hotel experience that offers the best in hospitality (as evidenced by the hotel’s endorsement by Leading Hotels of the World), along with a range of activities and a setting that’s almost impossible to beat. Let’s start with the setting: Steyn City’s trademark is its 2,000 acre indigenous parkland; the ideal backdrop for a myriad of family-focused, outdoor-oriented activities (all of which can be enjoyed by hotel guests). There’s the 45km floodlit promenade for walking or jogging any time of day or night, cycling, numerous resort pools and, of course, the 18-hole Nicklaus Design Championship golf course. Added to this, the parkland is home to several themed play nodes including a Dinosaur Park, Pirate Ship and skate park, all designed to capture children’s imagination, and ensuring that the Steyn City Hotel is an ideal choice for family holidays. The Lagoon Precinct is, undoubtedly, one of the estate’s highlights. There is so much to do here: if you’re feeling active, book one of the padel courts, start kayaking or try your hand at SUP boarding. Or, if you’re more in the mood to soak up the rays, enjoy taking a dip from time to time in 300 metres of
Steyn City.indd 17
sparkling water while the children enjoy endless fun on the water slides. Then, take your seat at the Family Table, serving scrumptious Mediterranean dishes. There are a number of eateries to choose from within Steyn City: opt for bistro-style dining at 19 by Michael at The Clubhouse, treat yourself to decadent flavours at Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream, sip on foamy cappuccinos from Seattle Coffee Co. or linger over an Italian-inspired dish paired with the perfect wine at Café del Sol Steyn City. Soak up the vibe of the City Centre’s piazza after your meal, by doing a little window-shopping at favourite bespoke retailers like Le Creuset and The Gallery at Steyn City. As much as these activities make the Steyn City Hotel by Saxon a perfect leisure destination, it is equally well equipped for business travellers. Located just 15 minutes from the Lanseria International Airport, and connected via main arterial routes to key business hubs in Pretoria, Midrand and Sandton, it is an obvious choice for those who consider easy access critical (and, for those who are juggling multiple meetings with tight deadlines, the Ultimate Helistop offers chartered helicopter flights). Steyn City Hotel by Saxon also offers a conducive shared workspace at Guild, which is additionally home to meeting rooms and conferencing facilities capable of hosting up to 80 delegates. Guild is, moreover, your first stop when hunger calls, serving breakfast and lunch, and when those deadlines are done, enjoy a cocktail at the hotel’s rooftop pool or in the luxe bar of the hotel. Soon, these facilities will be joined by the Saxon Spa at Steyn City, which opens its doors in April 2025, providing the ultimate pampering experience. Guests can enjoy all of this while relaxing in living spaces designed to be a home from home. With 48 one-to-two-bedroomed apartments available (as well as a three bedroom penthouse and four bedroom presidential suite), each with stunning views, Steyn City Hotel by Saxon is a destination you’ll wish to return to again and again.

REITLING IS 140 THIS YEAR, kicking off its celebra-
tions with a pop-up museum in Zurich, a travelling Time Capsule exhibition of vintage watches, a trio of anniversary watches and a new zest, fronted by the company’s affable CEO, Georges Kern, who has reenergised the much-loved salon. Telling 140 years’ worth of stories is a big part of this reenergising strategy, and Kern has called in Fred Mandelbaum, collector, curator, historian and all round amiable watch guy, to achieve it. Mandelbaum’s recently released book on Premier, Breitling’s elegant line launched in 1943, is also part of that strategy. Originally designed to fuse elegance and functionality, Premier has in the past years been redesigned, with new movements, hues and functions combined with its vintage essence. ‘Willy Breitling was a strategic person, always looking at new markets. In 1943 he realised the war would eventually come to an end and the world would be looking for something new, fresh, sophisticated. Premier needed to be a watch of impeccable taste, to quote the great man, and that’s what Breitling produced. Its aim was to make your heart sing when you looked at it,’ says Mandelbaum. It was, in many ways, a departure from Breitling’s tool watches that were used in the air, on land and in the sea as functional, chronographic pieces. Here, then, was a watch that would announce Breitling at the gentleman’s club, as well as in the trenches. It worked. Premier took its place among the formal watches of the world and for decades it played a role in Breitling’s success. But it lost its way, suggests Mandelbaum. Or, rather, Breitling’s focus shifted to adventure watches and Premier found itself in the doldrums. That all changed in 2021 when Kern, determined to broaden Breitling’s appeal, saw Premier as the range best positioned to underline that strategy. ‘Breitling was a shark in a swimming pool,’ Kern said. ‘We needed to bring it out into the sea.’ Premier would celebrate its history but reinvent itself for the modern age, a microcosm of Breitling’s broader strategy. It worked. Again. The world was indeed ready for a watch that represented the best of the past, but with current technology and functionality. Premier has been a contemporary success; so much so that it features in Breitling’s trio of limited-edition 140th-anniversary pieces (the others are the Navitimer and Chronomat), released recently. All three feature the latest Caliber

LOUIS XIII COGNAC AN EXPRESSION OF TIME
T
HERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS that cannot be done quickly, things that take time to be realised. And there’s little that will reflect this sentiment more than a decanter of LOUIS XIII Cognac. Time and terroir are at the heart of this premium spirit. Guided by Cellar Master Baptiste Loiseau, this premier spirit takes centuries to produce – from the seed of an oak tree to the drop that passes your lips. Year after year, the vines growing in the Cognac Grande Champagne terroir cycle through the seasons. The warm, chalkrich soil of this terroir has become the life source for vines that produce grapes of exceptional aromatic potential. Harvested at the height of their aromatic maturity, the grapes’ fresh juice is left to ferment before undergoing a precise double-distillation process in small traditional copper pot stills. Over the next several months, LOUIS XIII master distillers extract and concentrate as much of the wines’ unique character as possible, amplifying their intrinsic aromas through distillation exclusively on the lees. Out of some 1 000 samples, only a few expressive unaged eaux-de-vie (translated as ‘water of life’) are selected by the Cellar Master and his tasting committee as possessing the potential to compose a future blend of LOUIS XIII. On the rare occasion this sought-after quality is obtained, an eau-de-vie will be assigned the highest rank, a +10% grade. These unaged eauxde-vie then start their years’ long ageing process.
52
FIN_Louis XIII.indd 52
The eaux-de-vie will then encounter centuries-old oak tierçons in the LOUIS XIII cellars. The Cellar Master watches over these eaux-de-vie, exploring their infinite directions and guiding the single right path to a future LOUIS XIII Cognac. LOUIS XIII’s Cellar Master, Baptiste Loiseau, says, ‘From the seed of the magnificent oak for our ageing tierçons to the creation of the final blend of LOUIS XIII, centuries pass by – decades of dedicated craftsmanship and slow, steady maturation.’ Marie-Amélie de Leusse, chairman of the board of directors of Rémy Cointreau adds, ‘The process can take decades before the final product is realised. Our Cellar Master puts away eaux-de-vie that he may never even see or taste in his lifetime.’ A cognac this significant deserves extraordinary presentation. Based on a 16th-century flask, embossed with fleursde-lys, that was discovered on a battlefield in Jarnac, France, the LOUIS XIII decanter has remained largely unchanged since its inception in the late 1800s. Each decanter, with its unique shape and finish, is hand-cut, blown and individually engraved and numbered so that no two decanters are the same. De Leusse says, ‘We are always striving for excellence. Our company’s values are well embodied by the LOUIS XIII terroir and the time given to produce this exceptional cognac.’ In essence, each drop is a living legacy and each decanter a celebration of visionary minds and craftmanship. louisxiii-cognac.com

AVE NO DOUBT, the world of motoring is still wrestling with a discursive sense of self. To electrify or not, how many niche models are too many, what to do about the China Problem, what role should technology play in self-driving, how to address the north/south affordability disparity? Despite all that, the new-year elite looks set to provide a welcome dose of style and substance. Compelling new models from all the luxury manufacturers are lined up, with Private Edition tracking the cream of the crop. AUDI RS E-TRON GT PERFORMANCE Cream indeed. There’s not much that comes close to Audi’s latest electric missile in terms of speed or looks. The marque is laying

claim to the electric performance crown in the shape of their achingly beautiful flagship e-tron, the RS GT Performance. Ingolstadt’s ground-to-air missile has won a plethora of design prizes, notably Hanover’s coveted iF Design Award. Now add supersonic speed to its bucket of attributes: the RS bullets to 100km/h in three seconds. Three quiet seconds, unless you choose one of Audi’s bespoke sound signatures. In the cabin – surprisingly spacious for such a ground-hugger – the effect of such rapid acceleration is science fiction: you were there, now you’re here. Given that Audi’s speciality is unfussed, light, elegant motion, electric fits the brand perfectly. There’s more good news. The techies reduced the time it takes to charge the batteries to a useful 18 minutes (from 10 to 80 percent). The range is also excellent at 500km, application and attitude notwithstanding, of course.

THERE ARE FEW BETTER, MORE EXHILARATING WAYS OF EATING UP DISTANCE THAN IN MERC’S TASTY ROADSTER.
MERCEDES SL63 At the top of the sportscar heap it’s still all about power, and Mercedes-AMG are clearly playing for keeps. Witness their latest SL63 SE Performance, heading for our shores soon. The E stands for electric, which in this case is a helping hand – the main power unit is AMG’s legendary 4-litre V8 bi-turbo engine and those electric motors simply add more shove. A lot more. A whopping 600kW worth, as well as a frankly outrageous 1 420Nm of torque. In simple parlance, that translates to effortless around-town gliding (when the electric motors come to the fore) and ballistic touring when the main taps open up. Roof down, of course. The SL’s raison d’etre has always been about la dolce vita afternoons and windswept sorties down to the coast, Hermès luggage in the boot, Moët chilling on the other side. That roof is fabric now with a three-layered design (outer shell, roof liner and acoustic mat) and opens in 15 seconds. There’s also more room in the boot, thanks to the compact roof design, good for real luggage in real life. On the road, the 63 SE is firmer than its brethren but, again, the baseline is all about comfort, so it is rarely uncomfortable – only manhole covers catch the electronically adaptable suspension out. programme and the car hunkers down, bullets for the horizon and owns its reputation as a continent crosser. There are few better, more exhilarating ways of eating up distance than in Merc’s tasty roadster. Heaven. PORSCHE MACAN EV More electric dreams, this time from Porsche, they of the superb Taycan and upcoming 718 Boxster and Cayman. The big news for 2025 will be that last note: 719 Boxster and Cayman are not Porsche’s bestsellers, despite being entry-level cars, and their electric versions will help generate interest. More importantly, they will showcase how Porsche intends to approach the electrification of 911, a tricky proposition given the latter’s iconic status. In the meantime, Porsche’s mid-sized SUV, the Macan, has been given the full electric treatment. It’s the company’s first all-electric SUV, something of a surprise given the popularity of the Cayenne range. Interestingly, Porsche has made provision upfront for a ‘frunk’, a front trunk; traditionally, electric vehicles, despite having no engine, don’t allow access to the front end of the car. Porsche has also increased the cabin space (again, because there’s no engine upfront), making the compact Macan

OPPOSITE PAGE Seductive from any angle, MercedesAMG’s fire-breathing SL63 SE Performance retains the company’s iconic V8 engine and adds electric shove, just for good measure. ABOVE No understated wallflower approach for Bentley’s latest Flying Spur, its Tourmaline Green hue announcing a certain contemporary hooliganism. feel far more spacious than its external dimensions suggest. Its electric figures are better than industry standard: a 600km range and a 21-minute charging time from 10 to 80 percent. It will be interesting to see what kind of success it sees in South Africa, especially in the funky grape-coloured Amethyst Violet tone flighted in all the pre-launch fuss. BENTLEY FLYING SPUR Equally arresting is Bentley’s new Tourmaline Green, one of two new colours for the soon-to-be delivered Flying Spur (grey is the other). Acid green isn’t exactly South Africa’s idea of a Bentley colour, but it underlines the marque’s willingness to play – and attract new, younger clients. Flying Spur confirms that. It is as fast as the celebrated new Continental GT Speed and a full four-seater

made for the overachiever who wants to be driven... and driven quickly. Just how quickly? The V8, coupled to those two electric motors fore and aft, manages a 0-100km/h time of 3.8 seconds. Which is remarkable, given its 2 500kg weight. Its adaptive suspension means it can keep going through the twisties too. A great deal has been written about the Continental GT’s legendary agility and it seems much of that learning has found its way into the Flying Spur. Inside, of course, it is London club meets bespoke private yacht, a rich synthesis of wood, aluminium and carbon fibre. Just how the various elements combine is up to the owner; a crucial part of Bentley ownership is a private visit to the Bentley factory in Chester to choose the bespoke interior and exterior. Tourmaline Green included. How times have changed.

Soaring spirits
TIME TRAVEL WITH THE MACALLAN Said to be the most expensive whisky ever sold, a bottle of The Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 60-year-old fetched a recordbreaking price of $1.1 million at a 2018 Bonhams auction in Edinburgh. This year, The Macallan celebrates 200 years of existence with The Macallan Time : Space Collection, comprising two unique expressions of their precious liquid. There’s an element of sci-fi alchemy at work: to mark the anniversary, master distiller Kirsteen Campbell symbolically reached back in time and selected two casks of rare whisky distilled in 1940 from peated malt barley. The circular vessel created for the collection

does, in fact, look like some kind of time machine, and comprises two conjoined capsules, one containing the 84-year-old spirit, the other receptacle filled with a 2018 vintage, aged in sherryseasoned American oak hogsheads. THE 300 Serious whisky collectors would do well to get their hands on a bottle of Glenfiddich Grand Château 31-year-old single malt whisky, of which only 300 are available in South Africa. The whisky has been aged and finished in two sets of Bordeaux wine casks to achieve deep, complex flavours (caramelised cherries and apples, spices and toasted oak), boasts a reddish colour, and a price tag of R40 000. WINNING WATERS Established in 1895 in Keith in Banffshire, Scotland, Bacardiowned Aultmore is a Speyside distillery whose name is associated with quality and rooted in lore: it’s derived from the Gaelic phrase An t-Allt Mòr, meaning ‘big burn’, a reference to its water

source, the Burn of Auchinderran, said to be responsible for its whiskies’ incredible smoothness and purity. The tasting panel at this year’s International Whisky Competition confirmed this by naming Aultmore’s 25-year-old single malt Whisky of the Year and declaring its creator, Stephanie Macleod, Distiller of the Year. Matured in Oloroso sherry casks, the liquid is stunningly complex, with beautiful integration of floral notes, various fruits, butterscotch, ginger and leather, which are picked up on the nose and followed through with mounting intensity on the palate. One judge noted that it would be difficult to identify any element of the whisky that could be improved upon. SIP OF ADVENTURE While Jura 14-year-old single malt Scotch is available locally, adventurous whisky drinkers might consider a pilgrimage to the distillery on the eponymous Isle of Jura in Scotland for an up-close look at its rarer spirits. It’s quite a mission, requiring you to first get to the Isle of Islay before catching a ferry. The distillery is in Craighouse, the main village on an island with one road, one shop, one pub, one hotel and around 212 people. A worthwhile trek, though, to see how they get their libations so smooth. Gorgeously spicy and aromatic, with fresh citrus, mango and vanilla, and herbal and floral notes, the 14-year-old is matured in old American rye barrels responsible for toffee and maple syrup aromas, and the scent of guava and gentle wood spice. In the mouth, there’s the richness of pecan-nut pie and toffee apple, cinnamon, cacao and hazelnut – flavours that will take you back to Jura with every sip. AMERICAN GOLD Newly introduced to South Africa, Gold Bar Whiskey is blended from rye, corn and barley whiskeys produced at distilleries across the US and then matured in Californian wine barrels in a San Francisco rickhouse. Overseeing the blend is secondgeneration Napa Valley winemaker Monty Paulsen, who achieved double gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition for

the golden amber spirit with its delicate sweetness and creamy-smooth mouthfeel. flavours include roasted cacao and honeyed gingerbread – utterly exquisite. Also memorable on the palate, is Rémy Martin’s 300th Anniversary Coupe, a historic and very limited release that cellarmaster Baptiste Loiseau swears will never be reproduced. The blend, available in just 6 724 individually numbered bottles, is made from a reserve supply of eaux de vie that, over the years, is enriched and topped up by successive cellarmasters in a longterm creative process known as Réserve Perpétuelle (or ‘Perpetual Reserve’), which ensures that the precious spirit never runs dry. With this special birthday batch, Loiseau has crafted something marvellously layered, complex and delicious.
Wines of distinction
A ROARING SUCCESS From Stellenbosch’s De Toren Private Cellar, The Black Lion is among the finest 100% Shiraz wines this country has ever produced, cultivated from select hand-manicured vines that apparently receive unrivalled individual attention. Once fermented, it’s aged in new French oak for 18 months; each year, no more than 1 300 individually numbered bottles go into the world (its 2012 maiden vintage saw just 608 bottles produced, precious liquid indeed). You can happily open it right away
but its phenomenal ageing potential means that, in optimal conditions, you can let it mature for up to 40 years. SIZE MATTERS With its clean, simple label and strikingly Biblical name, Babylonstoren’s Nebukadnesar 2021 Magnum is a big (literally), bold, local Bordeaux blend, so moreish, in fact, it seems obvious to fill double-volume bottles with it. Comprising 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 13.5% Petit Verdot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 0.5% Malbec, it’s dry yet fresh, full-bodied yet sleek, with velvety tannins and a deep, saturated, dark ruby colour. Easy to drink right now, it will accrue tremendous complexity over the next decade. It’s available in limited quantities and worthy of collecting from the farm personally. No one ever regretted a visit. While you’re there, sign up to their Wine Club, which will give you access to their new flagship Pinot Noir, In die Wolke 2019. REBEL SPIRIT The Swartland is known for its fiercely independent wine farmers who prefer to interfere less and allow the land to speak through the grapes. Leading the pack with near-cult authority, Eben Sadie has been called South Africa’s most anarchic winemaker, keeping it as natural as possible after abandoning conventional winemaking in 2000. Since then he’s been experimenting with heritage grape stock, unusual blends, and vintages made from minute parcels of vineyard under The Sadie Family Wines label. While his ballsiness has produced many phenomenal wines, the one that critics and picky drinkers frequently return to as evidence of his magic touch is The Sadie Family Columella 2018, said to be as harmonious as any wine can be. A multi-vineyard Syrah-dominated blend of red Mediterranean varieties, one apt descriptor is ‘scintillating’, while Sadie himself says it’s ‘a wine with a big temperament: explosive, but not excessive’. Incidentally, Sadie’s 2022 Columella scored 99 in Tim Atkin’s 2024 South African wine report. As did Sadie’s 2023 Mev Kirsten, a shockingly good Chenin Blanc.

‘THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY IS BEING ABLE TO TASTE WHERE A WINE IS FROM.’
THE SWARTLAND’S SWEET SOLERA Also in the Swartland, California-born Andrea Mullineux avoids any intervention in either the vineyard or the cellar that might detract from a wine’s sense of place. ‘The number one priority is being able to taste where a wine is from,’ she says. ‘It should be unique to its region, and ideally to a specific vineyard.’ Exemplifying this pursuit of an honest, authentic expression of place is her Mullineux Olerasay #3, a straw wine produced from 100% Chenin Blanc grapes harvested from parcels of old vines in the Kasteelberg’s stony schist as well as the Paardeberg’s decomposed granite. The dessert wine is produced using appassimento (a process that sees the grapes dry on straw mats to concentrate the sweetness and flavours before being pressed). Each harvest’s liquid is combined with wine from barrels held back annually since 2008, so each new bottling is a deeply complex blend that includes a portion of each harvest’s solera.
THE SPANISH MENTOR Strawberries, red cherries, raspberries and hints of tobacco on the nose. Cloves, dried fig and hints of leather, a solid tannin backbone and substantial acidity on the palate… The Mentors Limited Edition Tempranillo 2021 is the latest in a series of progressive wines produced at KWV. Winemaker Izele van Blerk works exclusively on this limited-edition range as a way of showcasing single variety expressions from specific vineyards, ie., wines for connoisseurs curious about lesser-known varietals. Only 1 000 litres of the Spanish cultivar have been produced, using grapes grown in a block in a small Wellington vineyard.
MORNING GLORY At their cellar in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, Chris and Suzaan Alheit practise ‘minimalist’ winemaking using natural fermentation to produce personality-forward wines that elegantly and boldly express the character of the various places in which their grapes are grown. ‘We’re interested in unadorned, honest winemaking, because we believe in letting the vineyards speak for themselves,’ says Chris. This earned their 2023 Alheit Vineyards Nautical Dawn Chenin Blanc full marks in Tim Atkin’s wine report, the only wine to achieve this distinction, and prompting him to call it ‘a perfect wine in every sense… emblematic of the terroir-driven approach’.
A RARE RED BLEND Just 900 bottles of the rare Merlot-Syrah blend Holden Manz Elysium 2021 exist, its production only possible when the two cultivars ripen simultaneously. The 2021 is the fourth such vintage, the grapes hand-picked, hand-sorted and then subjected to spontaneous fermentation with a 50-day cuvaison before a 24-month maturation in new French oak. It’s a powerful blend, with ripe berries, intense black cherry and dark chocolate on the nose, not to mention a slight white truffle scent. The flavours (mocha and nutmeg with hints of anise) are no less full-on, yet it’s refined, elegant, and – crucially – most memorable.

OU DON’T GET CALLED Pretty Belinda for nothing. The minute you enter the affectionately named five-bedroom villa in Hermanus, you can understand why this home has a reputation for being beautiful. From gorgeous sunbeds adorned with plush cushions that surround a pristine swimming pool to a curated art collection that adorns the villa walls, the space is most definitely pretty. Equally impressive is how big the villa is, a sprawling home whose spaciousness is enhanced by the villa’s whitebased colour palette. Four wings built around a courtyard offer plenty of privacy yet allow for the whole family or friend group to congregate around one of several communal spaces: a number of fireplaces (including an outdoor firepit); the bar and snooker table; and the enormous patio, with its extralength sofas and mountain views. All five bedrooms are en suite, with the main bedroom taking up the entire top floor, most definitely the lair of the hosts. It’s a villa that invites large-scale entertaining, with a beautiful open-plan kitchen, as well as a separate back-end service kitchen for the more serious or professional chef or caterer. From the open-plan kitchen and living area, you look across to what is the natural centrepiece of the villa: a lush green lawn with a sparkling pool. Four of the five bedrooms open directly onto this protected oasis, an ideal spot to soak up some sun, or a playground for children while parents watch from the comfortably furnished verandah. Pretty Belinda is available for rental through Icon Villas that books around 100 different private villas in the Western Cape. Therese Botha, founder of Icon Villas says they’ve seen a marked increase in enquiries for properties accommodating multigenerational family travel, as well as groups of friends travelling together. ‘For me this is what true luxury means right now – the luxury of time spent with loved ones. It’s evident that more and more guests have come to recognise and appreciate the advantages of choosing a villa stay, which offers all a hotel does, but also includes privacy, space and flexibility, with conveniences such as dream kitchens for foodies who love entertaining, and gardens with swimming pools, kids’ play areas and outdoor dining areas that suit the South African lifestyle,’ she says. Icon Villa clients also have the option to add on services such as an in-house chef and butlers and have access to a concierge service that provides insider tips and booking for sightseeing excursions, guided tours, restaurants, wine estates and other local experiences. ‘The villas in our portfolio are hand-picked and immaculate and have a certain flair, each with soul and personality,’ says Therese. That couldn’t be more true of Pretty Belinda. Iconvillas.com

My father was particularly good at leasehold developments (something people didn’t really understand back then), where you build on somebody else’s land. Over the years, they built up a portfolio of 13 shopping centres across the country.’ Goosen joined the family business straight after school but says there was no silver spoon involved. ‘My first job was reception and my second job was my mother’s PA. It was a baptism by fire! She is hardcore,’ Lisa laughs. ‘She was the backbone of everything. We worked in a small office where I sat across from her and she watched my every move. I had to go to every meeting with her. I’ve always been excited by it and, slowly but surely, I took over the management of all our tenants.’ Fortuitously, it was their shopping mall in Bushbuck Ridge and an invitation to tender to develop a luxury safari lodge in the Manyeleti Game Reserve nearby that led them to where they are today. The business is owned by Lisa, her husband and her parents. She says, ‘None of us had a cooking clue about luxury lodges. Growing up, there were times when my family was broke and we’d often camp on a shoestring. We had no understanding about the tourism industry, nevermind the luxury tourism industry. We only understood shopping malls and property development. But we all thought it sounded like a fun idea.’ It was the complementary combination of skills among the four business owners that’s been crucial to their success. ‘My dad is a rainmaker. He can pull in deals, make them work. I laugh because they say you marry your father and that’s exactly what I did. My husband and father are both big personalities, very gregarious, great at bringing in new projects and sealing deals. My mom and I hold the reigns of the business, we know exactly what’s going on, moneywise, businesswise and operationally.’ They ultimately won the Manyeleti tender and were awarded the concession. Lisa recalls the early days of developing what was to become Tintswalo Safari, their first venture into luxury lodges. ‘We set about designing and building the lodge under the leadership of architect and designer Neil Hayes-Hill. It took

nine months to build and we had to live in tents on site.’ At the time Lisa and her husband, Warwick, had two young children and she remembers being in the wild with the Big Five as their neighbours. ‘My one-year-old son had just learnt to walk and one day he fell while running and bit his tongue. At the time, he used to fall asleep with a bottle and that night inside our dome tent, he started crying because he couldn’t suck his bottle.’ This seemed to interest a nearby pride of lions. Lisa recalls sitting up in their flimsy tent for hours trying to soothe her inconsolable son while hearing the lions getting closer and closer. While her son eventually settled down and the lions lost interest, it shows the dedication involved in getting the lodge built in such a wild location. And like Tintswalo Atlantic, Tintswalo Safari, which borders the unfenced Kruger National Park, doesn’t disappoint. Without leaving the lodge itself, you’re guaranteed to see elephant who regularly come into camp to drink, a herd of buffalo and, as Lisa’s family discovered, lions that are never very far away. The family cut their teeth on Tintswalo Safari, and had to learn the ins and outs of the luxury tourism industry, which, given their shared skill set, they succeeded in doing. They also discovered the tourism industry was a lot more enjoyable and more aesthetically pleasing that shopping malls, and so they were hooked.

ABOVE The latest addition to the Group, and the first cross-border lodge, is Tintswalo Siankaba on the banks of the majestic Zambezi River. RIGHT Tintswalo Safari was the Group’s first lodge and is situated in the unfenced Manyeleti Reserve bordering the Kruger National Park. BOTTOM RIGHT The spacious Stanley Suite at Tintswalo Safari offers privacy and style.
After Tintswalo Safari, they built Tintswalo Atlantic and have since added Tintswalo Waterberg in the private Welgevonden Game Reserve in Limpopo as well as Tintswalo Boulders in Simon’s Town. Welgevonden on the highveld is particularly pretty with its rolling hills. Tintswalo Waterberg is an intimate private lodge nestled on a hilltop with spectacular vistas across treetops and bushveld, great for animal viewing. This is also Tintswalo’s most family-friendly safari lodge with its electric fences keeping animals from getting too close as well as an entertainment room for younger children. Back in Cape Town, Tintswalo Boulders in Simon’s Town looks right over Boulders Beach and its famous penguin colony. A private gate from this boutique villa leads straight onto the

boardwalk so guests need not wrestle the crowds visiting one of Cape Town’s most popular attractions. And the family’s most recent acquisition? Something a little different, which Lisa refers to as ‘definitely more rustic than our other boutique lodges’. Situated on the banks of the Zambezi River near Livingstone in Zambia, Tintswalo Siankaba offers an enchanting experience in the form of a tented treehouse island camp. Here you can experience Mokoro (dugout canoe) trips around the islands as well as sunset river cruises by motorboat. There are also village walks, or guests can enjoy a sandy beach island picnic in the middle of the Zambezi. Ultimately, whatever you’re after, Tintswalo has excelled in providing it for you. Lisa says, ‘We want our guests to leave feeling like they’ve rekindled something they’ve lost. That’s what we try and create for all our guest experiences at each of our lodges, and I think we nail it.’ We do too. tintswalo.com

Inspired by the designer’s childhood memories of steel farm barns. The roof was removed, and an impressive steel structure was lowered onto the existing footprint, then wrapped in black corrugated iron to evoke the essence of an original barn. The entire north face was replaced with a 6m wall of glass, flooding the interior with natural light and creating a seamless connection to the garden and breathtaking northern views.
