1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS 1.1 Point / Line / Plane

This tectonic present the primary elements of form in the order of their growth from the point to one dimensional line, from line to two dimensional plane and form the plane three dimensional volume.

This the photo by Palfai Domokos on Flickr. The photo focus on the points in the line, and the line grows from the point and spreads out to another point . The plane present between two lines. Contrast to the mutidimensional, this photo is more logic and clear.

A model with three dimensional view by inserting planes, lines and points where they meet. The inserting point line and plane create a muti-dimensional space.

Concept: Inspiration from the model and photo, i preferred the logic and clear presentation. I want to present the process of point growth to line and lines growth to plane in a logic way.

Process : I start with the point on the ground. The sequence points can be seen as a line. A point has no dimension. In order to visible mark the position, it must be projected vertically into linear form. Therefore, lines are generated as vertical and horizontal by connecting the points on the ground and the points on the top of column. I made the lines in different height and angles to the ground. Which has radial perspective view when you watching it in certain angle. Points can serve to the mark by intersection of two lines in the air.

I placed plane between two lines and let the edge of plane coincide with the horizontal line. Because I want to express that line extended in a direction to become a plane and the boundary of plane is line.

Because of the boundary is line. The elements appear to be different depending on people ‘s perspective. In the side to watch it, the plane appear to be dynamic lines.

Shadow also the part of the model. The shadow under the points, lines and planes are inserting together, which provide a muti-demensional sense. That contract to the logic of model strongly. In terms of experience, people can take a journey through it.

1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS 1.2 Mass ---Solid, darkness and heavy

Peter Zumthor, Aldo Amoretti ¡Brother Klaus Field Chapel The dark tone of the picture and the rough texture express the massive and heavy of mass. A beam of light come in to the space and make the different level of light appear in the space. Which contrast to the darkness of the mass.

Entrance to Sintersee underground lake, Tropfsteinhรถhlen Cave, Austria. Mass is heavy and solid. Due to gravity, mass will sink to the underground. In addition to that, the earth is dark and solid like mass. Therefore, underground is good presentation of the mass. The cave is the real mass in the nature. The surface of the cave is rough or even sharp due to the erosion of limestone layer by rain and groundwater. The uneven texture express mass in a special way.

Chongqing Mountain & City Sales Office designed by One Plus Partnership.

Lots geometries in massy order create a sense of mass. The change of color shade and the gradient shape of geometry express the movement challenge the heavy of mass.

Concept: inspiration from the three pictures. I want to create a dark and solid underground space. In terms of experience. People slide down from entrance to space and walk to deeper space through stairs. The surface of the underground is sharp and will hurt people. The deeper space is solid only have two holes on the top. It is very dark and private. In terms of light, I created two different size of entrance for light come in. which in order to show the light has different visual effects in the spaces with different volume. And the contrast of light in the different position in one space is obvious as well. ( light gradient) In terms of form. The black create the sense of heavy and solid of mass. The shape is like cliff, which create sense of bottomless. The texture of surface is rough and even sharp, which imitate the real texture of soil and provide real feeling.

1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS 1.3 Frame and infill

The two squares frames insert to each other to create irregular and mutidimensional complex frame. The strings fill inside the frame. Not like normal idea about frame is something regular static and fixed, the infill is dynamic inside the frame. This model create ostensible dichotomy between frame and infill, mixing the role of frame and infill. The infill can be external to the frame and the fame can hide behind the infill as well. In addition, the inserting frame break the static of frame, making the movement appear on the frame.

The infill is dynamic contrast to the static square box frame.

Concept The frame is two irregular squares inserting together. The overlapping part of the frame can be seen as infill. In addition, the lines on the top flow through inside to the outside. It can be seen as frame and also infill. That was what I want to express. mixing the role of frame and infill. The infill can be external to the frame and the fame can hide behind the infill as well.

The frame is regular that looks static. The infill is triangular and dynamic. It looks like triangular flow from down to up. I choose the different color and shape(flat, fold, solid) to express the movement. I want to contrast the static of frame and the dynamic of the infill.

2.0 HERRING ISLAND A place for keeping secret

2.1 HERRING ISLAND Site analysis

Herring island in the yarra river is just 3km from the city. The park is a haven for nature and art lovers alike. Environmental sculptures made from natural materials reflect the island’s tranquil setting.

Transport and business Noise from far or near surrounding Sun path

Residential state entertainment

Sculpture distribution Sparse vegetation distribution Dense vegetation distribution

Ferry path Circulation on the island

The view from island to the city Site of pavilion

I choose the site because there are dense vegetation distribution around. It is a good place for hiding my pavilion. In addition, there has good view of city.

2.2 Concept My inspiration come from my first time know the herring island. Herring Island is little known to the people of Melbourne because it is not obvious position in the Yarra River. The island like the secret asset in Melbourne's inner suburbs. And art sculptures scattered throughout the island, which provide a discovery process for people. From that, I designed a pavilion that imitate trees because I want to make my pavilion just like the a part of the forest and a tree on the herring island like other normal trees on the island. The secret is hidden somewhere in the whole forest. It add the level of secrecy and provide a discovery process. I addressed the notion of secret by creating a journey and a process of discovery the secret. Because spatial path emphasizes the whole form of building, and the form is hidden until arrival. The form is like the secret until the people arrived after the journey and the process of discovery. I designed a long winding stairs inside the tree shape form in order to create a long journey with the sense of endless and mysterious atmosphere of the secret. I want people have a experience that discovery in the forest and release the secret finally. I placed a little room limit one person at the end of the frame for placing the secret. The room only can be found after the winding stairs journey, after the spatial path. That like the secret can be found when the people arrival after the discovery in the forest. The wall of room will open and close automatically. It only open for five minutes. When the wall is closed, it cover the view of people that limit the time of people stay inside just for five minutes. And the room is facing to city, because i want to create the contrast of feeling of forest and city. People staying inside the forest but have the city view.

2.3 Conceptacle & Design drawing

In my conceptacle, I start with the frame with tree shape. I illustrate the trunk and branches of trees and translate them to the many lines that with different height and different angle to the ground intersecting to each other.

I selectively combined elements from my previous projects to form a new composition. From the P/L/P, I carried over the frame that the many irregular squares in turn to form a pavilion. I make the lines which imitate the tree shape on the two sides and connect them to form the frame of pavilion. Like the square frame in my “P/L/P. Little room for placing secret, limit one person

Infill some studs inside the frame not only make frame more like forest but also make the stairs roundabout around the stud. In order to express the discovery process, I make the stairs have a sense of endless. The stairs stretch into the underground. And the other side of the staircase detour back and merge with other stairs. Which make the staircase have no start and no end. That express the endless of the staircase. I placed some triangle panel on the top as the shelter for three family. The dynamic triangle on the top come from the dynamic triangle infill in my “frame and infill project.

The stairs winding inside the frame of my conceptacle model but it can not express the endless because people can see the start and end. I change another shape in final design, making the end detour back and merge with others and the start stretch into underground.

For the underground, in order to make the whole pavilion more real and unified. The underground space imitate the roots under the tree. The surface is rugged, like the roots grow in the ground is also irregular. A prominent part of the surface can be used as seat for people to rest. That related to my “mass project as well. In the project, the texture of the underground is rugged that limit people come in.

MATERIAL

In terms of material: the frame, stairs and underground space are used timber as material because timber is more close to the forest feeling. But they are in different color. In order to look closer to the tree, I chose the color like the trunk as my frame color. I chose the dark gray as the color of underground space. Because dark grey is closer to the color of soil. Which let the space integrated with soil and ground, confusing people. When people approached will find the space. That express the whole pavilion is hidden in the forest.

3.0 REFLECTION Through the study of three projects point/line /plane , mass and frame and infill in this semester. The earth studio developed my understanding of relationships of the three tectonics. The change of content of architecture from point to line to plane and form and volume. The different experience from underground, on the ground and above ground. All of them can be Inspiration for future design. For the secret project. Through the site visiting, I know the importance of intersection between architecture and site. In addition, this project let me know how to start and complete the whole process of architectural project. Starting with conceptacle is a good start to develop the projects make the process logic and rational.
