Normally, the lighting always is regarded as a production of the architecture. In this project, I hope to see the lighting from another perspective— we look at light as the cause or beginning of the architecture and explore it as a generator for design-related development of form and space. The aim of my project is development of original and non-conventional architectonics that deal with daylight in a creative way and find new possibility about how to use lighting to express the layer of the space.


In terms of relationship between light and space, I get my key words: gap, unseen illumination. I practice my work via a extreme space to exaggerate the experience of lighting. In addition, I practice to create unseen illumination lighting context and add some other media to reflect the lighting to create a confusion feeling for direction of illuminant.At the same time I concentrate on recording the changing trace of lighting with changing of lighting direction


The series models In the project, the author is intended to specifically discuss the relationship between the sequenceďźŒthe light and the space. In the past study, the effect of the sequence and that of the light were always separated into two different aspects to recognize. Actually, all the complex spaces are based on a sort of potential space; that is to say, the light is a part of spatial sequence with a significant effect on the quality of space. Chromatic light and sequence have gradually become one popular form in contemporary field of fine arts and space arts.

The author edited mathematic system to keep the series models under a unified rule with sequence in mind in the early experiment. In this phase, the sequence system is just a tool to produce the light as machine, deals with the work method and has nothing to do with anything. The axis is set on prototype, and every axis presents different color (red, yellow, blue) and every number owns a corresponding point on the number axis. The corresponding points are connected to ascertain the position of the tube in the model. 1/5

Every light box likes an equation, and there are variations in direction of the light and the color of the gap. Prototype is constant in this group light boxes with the position of the gap and the color of the gap as variables. For every light box, the result of the light effect is calculated in program instead of being designed with mathematic logic to see the series work. It is difficult to distinguish the sequence from the individual space, from perspective of spatial sequence, but it cannot be denied extension of inherent logic.


In my project, I cites the works from Judd and Dan Flavin to express the conception of seriality via lighting. From a certain perspective, the change of lights is uncontrollable. Therefore, the idea of “expressing order with light� seems as a paradox, which is what I am interested. The most significant point of the experiment is controlling uncontrollable lighting environment with controllable methods and strict logic.

I adopted painted color planes against smaller color lenses to create a pulsing pair of opposite that shape the space.In this light installation experiment, I used this way in dealing with the relationship between two kinds of light, one was from the invisible light source and fluorescent lamp and the other was from reflection of natural light by light on the wall. The light from diffuse reflection is much softer while the light from direct light is much more powerful. The two kinds of light can contrast and also integrate with each other. Light from diffuse reflection could soften power from natural direct light source, which could strengthen the spatial atmosphere.

Sequence is regarded as a generator to produce a series of works. Sol Lewitt illustrated his early series of works like this "All of the planning and decision are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory. The idea become a machine that makes the artâ€?.ďźˆ1970,p.11) With the mechanics thought to consider the serial design approach, the author pay much more focus on how to make use of logistical mathematics system to express intuitive thinking. Therefore, the process of setting rules and reasons in the design is much more important than the result.

The models of lighting are edited into a mathematic system and keep the result of lighting experiment under a unify rules. Every light box likes a equation, and it exist variations such as direction of light, color of gap. Since the back of the front piece was painted color, the context light was effected by color of background.But light from the directed illuminant is another color.The two kinds of light was combined to creat a new possibility of lighting.

SUDO KU & CHROMATIC SPACE In the last lighting installtion, I prefer to emphasis sequence via graphic approachďźŒ thereby I hope to develop my works via small space or architecture.Sudo Ku is a kind of classical plan to show the order in architecture.I tend to practice my series colorful lighting in polytropic Sudo Ku space. The following sketches means I can get vary light effection through different position of colorful light gap.


The doors could be moved by slideway and there is a colorfu gap in the door to provide chromaic light. With the moving of the doors ,the space could show a mixed various chromatic space.Since Sodu Ku itself is a sequence form ,so the lighting are going to vary under a precdictable regulation.Every piece ceiling was combined by two kinds of color glass as the picture show, so lighting will change with direction of the natural light. I try to practice the lighting experiment via a interaction installation .


There is no doubt that color could exert influence on emotions and consciousness of people. According to studies on color psychology, emotions reflected by color could support space. For instance, yellow makes people feel soft and confortable. Blue means calmness which is conductive to calm down emotions. Although these are not standard examples, any changes in brightness coefficient and saturation level could influence signal sent out by the space.


As an important component of visual world, color exerts influences not only on natural environment but artificial architectural environment. The color of environment light could influence our cognition and experience of space. With the gradually mature color theory, there are some studied proved that most of perceptions about space environment are based on the visual sense of color.

The combination of light and order has been a mature way of space art. The regular in architectural or artistic installations could strengthen the spatial perception and the spatial perception is much stronger when the order is much clearer, such as spatial scale, emotion, and direction and so on. These perceptions are visually exaggerated and strengthened under the ordered light environment. With respect to architectural space, too macroscopical order is difficult to be displayed in some specific space. However, a number of examples on space show that the order intensifies in linear environment. Such a sense of order origins in light. In such a space with continuity, light gradually changes no matter in time or strength. According to the space experiment model, the intervention of light strengthens the order of space. Besides, light provides some orientation for behavior activity tends to light.

According to psychology, atmosphere reflected by different colors could support space, especially for architectural environment with special functions, including hospital, school, and office and so on. In my opinion, public space of hospital is the best place to display the relationship between space color and human. Therefore, I choose public corridor of King’s College Hospital as my base for research. According to American chromatist Gimbel, color is a complicated artistic method which can be used in treatment. The research shows that color of medical space should not be too strong for intermediate gray spectrum is needed for human brain and eyes. Lack of gray spectrum could enable human brain and eyes become unstable and fail to acquire balance and rest. Thus, colorful light is used in rendering space to replace simple wall spray paint. The color of light could soften the color of space, decrease the saturation of color, and mitigate changes of color in space.


I choose a corridor with the length of 200 meters in hospital as the base in this project. The corridor is too long but in shortage of natural light source. Just like streets in mini city, the corridor links six different architectures in King’s College Hospital. I try to set a series of light box in every junction linking other functional areas.


In the next phase of my project, I want to make my devices have more practical meanings and find foundations in architectures. In my opinion, the installation of lighting devices in the first phase will be beneficial for the exploration of order in space. The regularly changed vertical faces will generate dynamic influences on the psychology of users in the form of space and colored lights. When human beings are considered as a factor in the interaction experiment, the public space with extreme functions are optimal choices. Therefore, hospitals and kindergartens are most suitable bases. The original lighting box can be turned into

In addition, I also think deeply over color and light from the perspective of space. Color perception of space origins in combined effect of environment light (diffuse reflection) and light source due to the subtle relationship between diffuse reflection and light source. In this test , i more focus on the changing og light as the moving of illuminant.I t takes a slow and subtle light change.


The design logic of light installation maintains the concept of order in earlier experiment. However, size data in this space installation origin in all restrictive factors related with functions in hospital, such as width of wheelchair to pass and height of instrument to pass. According to investigation on order, the order should not just explain the number but record some feeling or event through figure or number. The color of a series of lamp box is determined by functions of different areas. Therefore, in a sense, apart from visual function, there are practical functions of light installation.



Audiences may feel difficult to feel the order of space when every junction is solely understood as a color pure experience of space. When walking through the whole corridor and passing every junction, audiences may realize the underlying order and continuous emotion in colorful light.

For my work, individual unit is unique, which means every lighting box is a independent chromatic space. While seen from entire space, it is a continuous and regular space. Actually, the combination of sequence and light present the attitude of architecture or artist to consider reconstruction and deal with actual space. They attempt to discover dynamic sequence in space via colorful light.


Light symbolizes sensibility in this relationship. Color, perception, and emotion represented by light are unstable variants, which mean “conditional change” and exactly explain the concept of order. The colorful light is applied in space installations as on color of light is conductive to the understanding of the influence of color on human behavior, psychology, and consciousness. I consider this phenomena as the “narrative feature of color”.
