The project has a three-block site in South Bronx. The neighborhood is in the process of gentrification and surrounding industrial warehouses are gradually being replaced by mid-end to high-end residentials. The project started with the concept of collective housing for both young professionals who are looking for live-work place and families with kids. We created a modular micro-unit and various methods of aggregation to provide different types of sharing ranging from shared living room, terrace, courtyard, working spaces, playground etc.

We have new technologies that are changing our daily life and we experience an overwhelming feeling about this rapid pace of technology growth. With all these technologies that ask us to live our lives differently, we basically have to change our mental model and our perception in order to understand what is happening around us, especially with something like gene sequencing that we typically don’t interact with in our daily life. The Genetic Wellness Center is a place that anticipates the general use of gene sequencing, genetic data storing and analyzing. It provides a number of spaces and amenities for people to encounter the process and to conduct research and treatment. The goal is to create an environment of awareness and reflection that places that mix individual and collective experience and engages with the natural condition of the site in Manhattan Valley.

Cinematic City Instructor: Adam Frampton Collaborator: Victor Marie-Hugo
In the downfall of the casino industry in Atlantic City, our proposal Cinematic City intends to revitalize Atlantic City with an alternative industry with film education, film production, and cultural tourism. The master plan categorized complex program relating film industry into Front-of-Scene and Back-of-Scene, we call them Blue and Grey spaces respectively. Blue represents the temporary movie sets, referencing “chroma keying” in film technology. Grey representing the supporting programs in the back of the scene, including live-work space and storage for movie sets and equipment. The proposal’s strategy of “striation” referenced OMA’s proposal for Parc de La Villette in creating opposite ways of experience the same space in different ways.

“Dive Through” Aquatic Center Instructor: Janette Kim Public spaces are designed for interaction, but people tend to hide inside their personal bubbles and avoid contact with strangers. The proposal is about creating a public space that triggers interaction under the brief of a water-oriented gymnasium. Diving acts as a “public activator”, which is unexpected performative events like pop-up buskers on a subway that are commonly appreciated by people of different backgrounds, can transiently break the individual bubbles and create urban joy. The building mass is divided into two volumes for different functions, and using a loop circulation including stairs, roof terrace, fireman pole and diving to connect the volumes both horizontally and vertically. Material-wise, stripe patterns are given to every surface to enhance the directionality of “movement” of body and eye. Again, this gives a strong contrast between the normal mode and interrupted mode when the stipe pattern breaks for the “public activator”. ETFE pillows are used in most of the building façade for creating a soft and ambiguous interface.
