Small classes, respect, friends _ Juni
A SCHOOL FOR ALL
International School Telemark is a friendly, small, forward-thinking school located in the pleasant residential area of Hovet just south of the centre of Porsgrunn and close to the E18 motorway.
Our students and staff come from Grenland, other parts of Norway and from all over the world. Students and staff care for and value each other and our school environment. Our core values at IST are respect, responsibility, reliability and resilience.
Collaboration, independence, creativity, problemsolving and inquiry are important elements of how we work together and what we wish students to develop in themselves.
HIGH QUALITY LEARNING
IST is an IB world school that uses the IB Primary and Middle Years programmes to offer a high-quality learning and positive social experience for all students. Our facilities are excellent here at Hovet and we have small classes, an attractive and supportive environment, and happy, friendly children.
Our National Test results and Grade 10 average scores are consistently very high, and we always strive to be the best we can. Many of our children have fluency in two or more languages, and all leave with an excellent understanding of both English and Norwegian.

SUCCESSFUL IN LIFE
Children are encouraged to do well and excel at their interests and strengths. They are also challenged to improve at subjects they find difficult. We prepare children for a changing, complex world, where they are in the best position, both academically and socially, to succeed in further education and the workplace. IST has a professional, experienced and dedicated staff who work with students to ensure that they all achieve their full potential.
At IST children become fluent in English, deepen and strengthen their subject knowledge, and develop their unique skills and individual character to be successful in life. We take the best practice from international, Norwegian and national educational systems to create excellent opportunities, both academically and socially, for our students.
WIDE NETWORK ALL OVER THE WORLD
We have strong proactive links with local schools, other international schools in Norway, and IB schools throughout the world. Our membership of Norwegian and international organisations brings an active and supportive network that all of our community benefits from.
ACTIVITIES
We have plenty of activities at IST including residential outward-bound weeks, trips abroad, museum visits, outdoor activities and ski days. We offer also sports, physical fitness, design, painting, dance, music and theatre.
In addition to English and Norwegian, our students learn Spanish as well. We work on exciting projects, presentations, and make friends with others locally, elsewhere in Norway and Nordic Europe, and further afield.
You can also work with groups, in classes, or on your own, and enjoy exciting ways of teaching from all over the world.
We have great science, art, design and maths facilities, and we are constantly looking to develop and extend our international learning environment. The school building has been recently completely updated and refurbished. Our new state-of-the-art library is a central focal learning point, as are our innovative Ideas Gardens used for group work, reading, projects and discussion. The Early Years section is a safe, stimulating and creative learning environment where children learn to play, socialize, gain life skills and develop a deep love of education.
WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?
The IB offers a world class academic and social environment with programmes at IST, fully authorized by the Norwegian Directorate of Education and Training (Utdanningsdirektoratet). Students can continue with the IB at diploma level at either Porsgrunn Upper Secondary School (Vgs) or Skagerak International School. Because the IB is flexible and prepares students so well, your child can go on to any national system with confidence and skill. Many of our students study further at prestigious and forward-thinking universities in Norway, the UK, the USA, Europe and the rest of the world.
We support parents as educators and have very positive, productive partnerships between home and school. IST believes in lifelong learning for all, and our students and parents benefit from the richness and opportunities that come from being here.

TESTIMONIALS
Dr Olav Sæter:
Mariann Deila Bryn:
My wife and I had a really good impression from the first official meeting point with the IST at Hovet. That includes the compressed presentation of the International Baccalaureate programs as the curriculum, the physical arrangements at the school (buildings, learning arenas, playgrounds, etc.) and last but not least, our meetings with the staff. We have seldom (never) experienced such a passionate community/ environment for learning!

Katrin Clemmensen-Fløholm:
I know if it wasn’t for IST, I would not be where I am today, and for that I am really grateful!
I was fortunate enough to attend IST about 11 years ago, in its second year of operation. Attending IST allowed me explore the options of the world outside of Norway, triggering my interest in starting a life abroad.
Beside the international focus of the school and the IB, IST allowed me to blossom and explore who I was as an individual. They allowed me to grow as an individual, boosting my confidence; making me believe I could do whatever I set my mind to.
If it wasn’t for IST, I wouldn’t have moved on my own to Sandefjord to continue my degree in the IB, which led me to taking a Bachelor in International Economics here in London.

• WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY
3 years after I moved to London, to undertake my degree, I managed to graduate with a high 2:1. This got me a job in London’s biggest real-estate firm, settled in a beautiful apartment minutes from central London and I have, as of now, no plans of moving back as life here is treating me well. I am excited to see where life takes me in the future.
