Greeting from the President & CEO and Chair
January 2021 Business Briefs
Greetings Chamber Members and Friends, As we enter 2021, we take a moment to reflect on 2020. To say that the past year has been challenging would be an incredible understatement. None of us expected the situation we first learned of in March to result in a world-wide pandemic with such far reaching effects. The pandemic has disrupted almost every aspect of our lives, and quickly evolved from a health crisis into an economic nightmare. As we moved into various stages of lockdown, millions of Canadians lost their jobs as businesses were forced to shut down, with Rakesh Naidu Mila Lucio some closing their doors forever. Many of the businesses that remained open President & CEO Chair experienced significant declines in business volume, and increased costs of doing business. The closure of the border for well over 9 months further compounds the situation, since businesses in border communities like ours rely significantly on the cross-border trade, tourists, and travelers. We recognize that unfortunately, the survival of many of our local businesses continues to be at risk. As we enter 2021, we are encouraged, knowing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Recent progress on vaccines has given us hope that we will be able to return to some level of normalcy in our daily lives soon. While the health care industry continues to be appropriately focused on dealing with health recovery, it is important that we continue to be focused on managing the equally important and interdependent economic challenges and recovery. The Chamber exists to support its Members and the business community, and never is our purpose clearer than during challenging times like these. Our success is driven by the success of our members. A thriving business community is essential for the community's prosperity, and the backbone of a thriving business community are the small businesses. Approximately 98% of all registered businesses in Canada were defined as “small” (under 100 employees), and 70.5% of all people working in Canada work for one of these “small” businesses. Of all new jobs created in our country, 87.7% are created by “small” businesses. Hence, the Chamber has significantly focused its advocacy efforts on the SMEs (Small and Medium Size Enterprises) by identifying the barriers to business sustainability and growth and collaborating with various stakeholders to find the right solutions. Through active participation and contribution, the Chamber has continued to help shape several federal and provincial government initiatives and programs such as the wage subsidy program, Canada Emergency Business account, Rent Relief Program, etc. The Chamber has been actively highlighting the issues and possible solutions, and from the start of the pandemic the Chamber has been interviewed over 65 times by various local and national media networks.
As we continue to find our way from the Recovery stage into the Thrive stage, we remain focused on a coordinated and collaborative approach to support all our local businesses. We will continue to work closely with all levels of government and our members to be the “voice of business” in our community. We welcome your inputs and insights as we continue to evolve our efforts and our services with this goal in mind. Thank you for your continued support and trust in the Chamber. We are a strong and resilient community, and collectively we will find our way through. We've got this!
| Business Briefs - January 2021
From networking to education, to exclusive membership discount programs, the Chamber continues to look for opportunities to strengthen the business community. Most recently the Chamber launched several new programs; The Recovery Activation Program, Trade Acceleration Program, Automobility Program and the Technology Assessment Program. We also shifted to an on-line platform, and over the last 9 months we have offered over 35 webinars and online events to support our members.

The Year That Went
D I G I TA L
If you uttered the word “Zoom” a year ago, most people would have thought you were talking about a camera lens, or one half of the marketing slogan used by Mazda. Now, of course, Zoom has crept into our everyday conversation as one of the many virtual platforms used to conduct business. Teams, Hangout and Go To Meeting have all taken on new meaning. The spread of the coronavirus caused businesses, institutions, organizations and individuals to quickly adapt to doing things differently. On-line shopping, e-banking, virtual trade shows and video networking quickly became the norm. So did work-from-home scenarios, PPE's, social distancing, curbside pick-up, outdoor dining and staycations. Cybersecurity became a bigger concern. Home internet speeds were put to the test. And many people upped the data plan on their cell phone package. Small businesses turned to the Digital Main Street program and ShopHERE to better promote themselves online and adopt digital tools and technology. The Recovery Activation Program, managed by the Chamber, provided support to businesses without a direct retail presence. Web sites were redesigned and social media content became a bigger priority. Yes, 2020 was The Year That Went Digital. It was also the year that taught us to be resilient, malleable, compassionate, and take stock of what's really important in our business and personal lives. 2020 reminded us that sometimes less is more, that old habits can be broken, brought out skills we didn't know we had and that things we once thought were vitally important to survival really weren't. While life will never be the 'same' due to COVID-19, and we will never return to 'normal', it's comforting to know that as a region, as Windsor Essex, together, we will get through this. (By the way, had you bought Zoom stock for $68US at the beginning of last year, you would have earned a nice profit selling at its peak {to date} of $560US).

Local Companies Adapt to New Normal Written by Dave Hall Pivoting and turning business models and processes upside down since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted economies across the globe has been the hallmark of many local businesses which have continued to thrive over the past nine months. One such company is Harbour Technologies, a supplier of parts and materials for the nuclear, automotive and aerospace industries. According to Chief Executive Officer Andrew Glover, more than 65 per cent of the company's business and production is now aimed at PPE customers. “We've hired 10 new employees and we're looking for more because we are adding a new shift at each of our plants to keep up with production commitments,” explained Glover. Harbour has also launched Atmis, a sister company, which is expected to start production early in 2021 of polycarbonate, dishwasher-safe, impact-resistant face shields for customers seeking both clarity and comfort. Its recently-opened plant in Oldcastle is producing between 2.2 million and 2.5 million surgical masks. Gown production is also ramping up through a partnership with the federal government, which is helping supply PPE, once Canada's demands are met, to countries unable to manufacture their own equipment. But Harbour is far from the only local company organization to pivot during this world-wide health crisis. At ShopEco, a local company selling beauty and health-care products, owner Debra Purdy was forced to close her Walkerville and Tecumseh locations in March. She has since re-opened her Tecumseh location after a month's hiatus and continues to offer online sales and product delivery to her customers. “We've revamped our website twice and while it's made for extra work for all of us, it's been well worth it to maintain our customer base,” said Purdy. “Many of our customers are in the senior demographic and extra cautious about going out so we bring our products to them.” Windsorites seeking help from food banks at the Unemployed Help Centre have been able access what they need after a drive-through system was launched to keep donors, volunteers, and clients safe and protected. “We set up a tent in our parking lot and gave out hampers and while it left people without the ability to select their own groceries, it still worked out really well,” added June Muir, Chief Executive Officer. Muir credited Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens and co-operation from union officials with redeploying city workers from CUPE Locals 82 and 543 to pack food hampers at the WFCU Centre and later Adie Knox Herman arena when the highly-successful th June 27 Miracle Food Drive took over the main bowl at the WFCU Centre. A novel partnership between the Windsor Family Credit Union and London-based Farhi Holding Corp. provided muchneed hotel rooms in downtown Windsor for use by healthcare workers seeking to isolate themselves from family because of potential exposure to the virus. On the software front, Gaia Digits has developed an employee screening tool to help keep workplaces safe.
Dave Hall retired in 2013 after spending almost 40 years covering a variety of subjects for the Windsor Star. He joined the Star's sports department in 1974 before switching to general news in 2001. He also covered City Hall for a number of years before finishing his career covering local business news.

And finally, Ford Motor Company found space in one of its Windsor plants to manufacture up to 100,000 face shields. While the pandemic has made life difficult for many business owners across the region, there are some positive stories to be told.

Automobility Membership Program
January 2021 Business Briefs
Vehicles have continuously evolved ever since being made readily available to eager customers over 100 years ago. Some evolutions have improved speed and safety, while others have changed the shape and size of cars, trucks and SUV's or they focused on convenience and luxury components for drivers and passengers alike. Perhaps the biggest advancement in what we drive is happening right now. And just like how local companies led the evolution of vehicles over time, our region is again leading the way and Windsor Essex is very quickly becoming 'The Automobility Capital of Canada'. Local businesses of all size, from start-up inventors to long established manufacturers, are directly involved in the transformation to electric, autonomous and connected vehicles. As are students and faculty at the University of Windsor and St. Clair College, and Chamber Members, many who are part of the Automobility Membership Program. Led by investment from FedDev Ontario, in conjunction with the WindsorEssex Economic Development Commission, companies involved in any aspect of electric, autonomous or connected vehicles, automotive based cybersecurity or related areas of development or manufacturing can participate in the Automobility Membership Program. It includes a Chamber Membership at the Connector Tier as well as Membership with Ontario Chamber of Commerce and the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber's Automobility Members participate in networking sessions, have access to exclusive webinars, information sessions and to the VR Cave at the Institute for Border Logistics and Security, the country's largest publicly accessible virtual reality facility. The VR Cave, a feature of the Province of Ontario's AVIN network, is the official virtual reality partner of Project Arrow, the first, original, full-build zero-emission concept vehicle in Canada. This project, led by the Automotive Parts Manufacturer's Association (APMA) will bring together the best of the best of Canada's electric-drive, alternative-fuel, connected and autonomous and light-weight technology companies. Automobility Members will also collaborate with counterparts from MICHAuto and PlanetM, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation's program dedicated to linking automakers, suppliers, start-ups and investors in the development of autonomous vehicles and the infrastructure needed to deploy them. That includes the transportation corridor being built between Detroit and Ann Arbor. Based on this current evolution to the automotive industry on both sides of the border, wouldn't it be great if a connected, autonomous vehicle made the first official crossing when the new Gordie Howe International Bridge opens in 2024? Automobility Membership Program: Are you or your company involved in the evolution? ENWIN is well known locally for ensuring the safe, reliable delivery of two essential commodities: electricity and water. The company's focus on community safety was rewarded in early 2020, when it received the Public Safety Awareness Award from the Electrical Safety Association – just before the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic began to emerge. As our community, and the world, struggled to address the challenges of COVID-19 in the ensuing months, ENWIN's safety focus was put to the test. Pandemic protocols were rapidly reviewed and put into action, and public awareness campaigns mounted to ensure the safety of both customers and employees. We thank ENWIN employees for remaining on the job, as they have done throughout the pandemic, and for finding new and innovative ways to continue to provide water and electricity to our community, despite some grave and challenging circumstances. It has been quite a year! Congratulations, ENWIN.

Chamber Set to Celebrate...
The 30th Annual Business Excellence Awards
The 30th Annual Awards were scheduled for May 21, 2020 at the Chrysler Theatre and St. Clair College Centre For The Arts. However, the BEA organizing committee, consisting of over a dozen dedicated volunteers, decided to postpone the event when it became clear the pandemic prevented it from safely taking place. “The BEAs are the premiere business event of the year” notes Committee Chair Jason Toner. “We looked at doing something virtually, or even pre-recorded. But the committee, and the Chamber, wanted to hold a live inperson event to properly recognize and celebrate the Award Finalists, the Award Winners and the Sponsors”. The BEAs are now scheduled for Thursday May 20, 2021. The live show at the Chrysler Theatre, produced by Media Street Productions, starts at 7:00 pm. However, only a select group of Finalists, Award Winners and Sponsors will be in attendance and will follow COVID-19 protocols set out by the Windsor Essex County Health Unit. Gordon Orr, CEO of Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island, who first hosted the Awards in 1999, returns as Emcee. A total of 11 BEAs will be handed out, including the new Green Innovation Award, sponsored by the University of Windsor and University Alumni Association. Two Award winners have already been announced: Marlene Corey of Cogeco/Your-TV is the ATHENA Leadership Award winner sponsored by Bell, while Farrow is the recipient of the Believe Windsor Essex Award sponsored by WFCU.
All other winners will be kept confidential until the night of the BEAs. A complete list of Finalists and sponsors is posted at www.windsoressexchamber.org. All Finalists will carry over to the May 20th event; nominations for the 2022 BEAs will open this summer with judging to follow. A major commitment from multi-year sponsor Cogeco th means the 30 Annual Business Excellence Awards will be streamed live on YouTube on a pay-per-view basis. They will also be broadcast live, and free, to subscribers of Cogeco's YourTV (cable channel 700). For dates and times of the rebroadcasts, please check www.yourtv.tv and click on the Windsor region. Dinner and streaming packages are being developed that will allow people to support local restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops while watching the Business Excellence Awards broadcast. Several options, including pick-up, delivery and catering, are available to safely dine at home, in restaurant or at work with your office bubble. More information on the dinner and streaming packages, as well as special BEAs gift bags, is available in the Windsor Star, on AM800 CKLW and on the Chamber's web site. Companies interested in advertising in the Official BEA Program should contact the Windsor Star's Advertising Department (or refer to the ad on page 17). “The 12-month delay will be more than worth the wait” comments Toner. “The live show, the streaming, the support for local restaurants all mean people will be talking about these BEAs for years to come. It also means the event, which is vital to our local business community, will continue into 2022 and beyond”.

GOOD HABITS CAN HELP YOU INVEST FOR
YOUR RETIREMENT
Learn 5 good habits of successful investors “We are what we repeatedly do," said Aristotle. "Excellence comes not from our actions but from our habits."
Good habits can help you be a better investor, and these five good habits can help you successfully invest for retirement. 1. Start early. The sooner you make it a priority to invest for retirement, the better. When time is on your side, it's a huge ally. The earlier you start, the more you benefit from the power of compounding, which is when the returns that you earn begin to generate a return. RSPs allow for unhindered growth, because investment earnings are not taxed as long as the funds remain in the account. 2. Invest regularly. It's a good idea to hardwire the habit of saving and investing. Set up a regular contribution plan to move a set amount of money automatically every month from your banking account to your RSP account. You'll quickly adjust your lifestyle around that priority budget commitment, and you'll avoid the stress of coming up with a single lump-sum contribution at the RSP deadline. 3. Establish a target asset allocation and rebalance regularly. Establish a target asset allocation — a particular mix of stocks, bonds and cash. Your asset allocation defines the relationship between expected risk and reward. The exact percentages in your mix will depend on several factors, including your risk tolerance and your time horizon. Stocks have historically had higher short-term risk but the highest long-term returns among the three major asset categories. If you have a longer time horizon, you're focused on growth, and you're willing to endure some volatility, then you might set a higher target percentage of stocks. Bonds are generally less volatile than stocks but offer more modest returns. If you have a shorter time horizon, or a lower tolerance for risk, then you might increase target percentage of bonds. Cash and cash equivalents, such as GICs and money market mutual funds, are the safest investments, but offer the lowest returns. The chances of losing money on cash-based investments are low, so they make sense if you're nearing a financial goal. But for a long-term investor, playing it safe in cash makes less sense: returns may not keep up with inflation, and your purchasing power can gradually be eroded.

GOOD HABITS continued... 4. Hold diverse investments. Proper diversification is essential for your retirement portfolio. There are many different markets and many different kinds of investments, and their values don't move up and down in concert. A well-diversified group of investments helps smooth out the ups and downs of the market, by allowing you to participate in assets that are doing well, while limiting your exposure to assets that are performing poorly. 5. Check your emotions. Emotions make us human, but they don't make us better investors. The normal ups and downs of the markets can trigger fear and greed, which cause people to do the opposite of the basic formula for success: buy low, sell high. History shows that market downturns have usually been excellent buying opportunities. Ready to put these good habits into practice? Speak with an Avanti Wealth Consultant today to discuss how they can help you achieve personal and financial success through their comprehensive, personalized approach to wealth management.

Chamber Golf Tournament
January 2021 Business Briefs
Golf photos courtesy of Snapd Windsor
The word 'distance' is used quite o en during a normal round of golf. Usually, it refers to how far a drive was smacked. Or how far you are away from the pin on any given hole. Pu ng 'socially' in front of 'distance' accurately describes the Chamber's 84th annual golf tournament presented by Stars Group, held on a beau ful September day at Pointe West Golf Club. Adhering to WECHU protocols in place at the me, and with the assistance of the awesome Pointe West sta, a sold-out group of golfers enjoyed a rare chance to socialize, get some fresh air and play a safe and socially-distanced round of shotgun style golf. For many, it was the ďŹ rst in-person social event they had a ended in several months. The tournament included fun ac vi es like a $5,000 Hole In One contest, marshmallow smash, croquet game, pu ng contest, longest drive and closest to the pin compe ons. The lowest overall score was recorded by the foursome from Paul Davis Restora on. Hand sani zers were placed at numerous loca ons around Pointe West, provided by new Chamber Member, LynxTS. Missing was the usual post-tournament recep on and sit-down dinner, although all golfers received a boxed meal before leaving the course. Special thanks to tournament sponsors Johnson Insurance, FirstOnSite Restora on, Windsor Chapel, AM800, CINTAS, Windsor Star, WindsorEssex Economic Development Corpora on, and Cogeco. And kudos to the crew at Pointe West, under the direc on of Rick Schmidtgall and Dave VanderHoeven, for being accommoda ng and inven ve so the tournament could take place in the midst of a pandemic. th

New Chamber Program
January 2021 Business Briefs
Eat. Drink. Win. That's the overall theme of the Chamber's new #DineYQG campaign presented by CUPE 543, but the real messaging is the importance of supporting the local restaurant and hospitality industry. #DineYQG provides assistance to restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, wineries, breweries, and distillers in Windsor Essex, many who have had their business severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. It's an extension of the successful #ShopYQG campaign (www.shopyqg.ca) launched by the Chamber in conjunction with Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island in Spring 2020. Those in the local food industry are encouraged to submit information for the free on-line Restaurant Directory at www.dineyqg.ca. As well, the first 35 restaurants to contact the Chamber will receive a complimentary 12-month Connector Tier Membership courtesy of CUPE 543, a Caring Community Partner. Restaurants can also access a free tool kit on the web site and incorporate the #DineYQG logo and messaging into their marketing. Customers can support their favourite establishments with in-person dining (when and where permitted) or ordering for take-out or delivery. That includes the notion of Double Down – ordering an additional meal(s) to enjoy the next day or doubling up on your gratuity. Customers who submit a copy of a receipt, a photo taken at a local restaurant or anything similar, will be eligible to win a weekly prize of $100 cash. PLUS, the restaurant the customer supported will instantly win $1,000 cash. There's over $11,000 in cash prizes available. Bonus entries are available for social shares too. #DineYQG is presented by CUPE 543 and supported by Libro Credit Union, WindsorEssex Economic Development Corporation's Small Business Centre, Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island, Gordon Food Service and the Ontario Restaurant Hotel Motel Association of Windsor Essex. Ten ORHMA Memberships will be awarded to the restaurants who win cash prizes. A $500 voucher from Gordon Food Service will be awarded to one lucky restaurant. Cash for you. Cash for restaurants. And support for our entire community. There are so many reasons to #DineYQG.
