President & CEO
Board Chair
Greetings Chamber Members and Friends, The first quarter of 2022 has been a busy one as we continue to advocate for businesses in Windsor and Essex County on many fronts and navigate our way out of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have heard from a number of Chamber Members and other business professionals in the area and are working with you to understand your concerns and be your voice at all levels of government. Recently, the Chamber network highlighted the importance of the Windsor-Detroit trade corridor and advocated for the removal of the Ambassador Bridge blockade. We will continue working with other local, provincial and national organizations to help alleviate the impact of the border restrictions on our businesses. In February, the WERCC submitted a policy resolution to the Ontario Chamber of Commerce which will support the trucking industry. This resolution is supported by many of our Chamber colleagues across Ontario as well as key Windsor-Essex partners. Later this month, we will travel to Brampton to defend this resolution at the OCC Annual General Meeting. In case you missed our announcement in January, we have partnered with local office supply company, Monarch Basics to offer our Members a new savings program. Read more about this new partnership and how our Members can save on office supplies later in this issue. As we wrap up the Chamber's Support Local campaign, we thank all of our generous sponsors and partners across Windsor and Essex County for working to promote this vital program. Local businesses continue to need our support and the Chamber will continue to encourage everyone to Shop, Ship & Dine in YQG. The Chamber has a number of exciting events planned in the coming months. Don't miss the Warden's Luncheon with County of Essex Warden, Gary McNamara on April 26th, and our 2022 Provincial Election Debates on May 5th – two important events for the Windsor-Essex region. We are looking forward to a return to in-person events this Spring, including our 2022 Business Excellence Awards at Chrysler Theatre and St. Clair College Centre for the Arts. We congratulate all of the finalists who were announced earlier this year and can't wait to celebrate all of your achievements in business! th
Lastly, we encourage you to consider submitting an application to join the Chamber's Board of Directors. Participating on the Board is an excellent way to have your voice heard, and to play a vital role in shaping the direction and priorities of the th Windsor-Essex Chamber. The deadline for applications is Friday, April 15 . Yours in business,

Gordie Howe Bridge Project
A Bridge to Prosperity The largest and most ambitious bi-national infrastructure project along the Canada-US border is under construction in our own backyard. The Gordie Howe International Bridge project will provide much-needed transportation improvements at the Windsor-Detroit trade gateway – the busiest commercial land border crossing between Canada and the US, while creating thousands of jobs and forever changing the Windsor-Detroit skyline. The six-lane cable-stayed bridge will be 2.5 kilometres/1.5 miles. With no piers in the water, the bridge features a clear span of 853 metres/0.53 miles making it the longest main span of any cable-stayed bridge in North America and the fifth longest in the world. Delivered by Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) with its private-sector partner, Bridging North America (BNA), work is progressing on all four components that make up the $5.7 billion project. The most visible sign of progress is the bridge towers located on each side of the Detroit River. As of March 2022, the tower legs stand at 140 metres/460 feet. Once complete, the towers will have risen to approximately 220 metres/722 feet and will rival the height of Detroit's tallest building, the 73-storey middle tower of the GM Renaissance Center.
| Business Briefs - March | April 2022
Tower construction is reaching a significant turning point as the individual legs at each tower are now connecting giving the structures the distinctive shape of an inverted “Y”.
A view of the Canadian Port of Entry main building, under construction on February 4, 2022.
The efforts of the more than a thousand people currently working on the site are being seen not just on the bridge towers. Construction is progressing on the Canadian and US Ports of Entry which will be among the largest ports along the Canada-US border. Building construction is underway at both of the ports but before this was possible, workers had to prepare the ground to provide a solid base for the structures. More than 1.174 million metric tonnes/2.6 billion pounds of engineered fill and surcharge material have been placed at the sites. Work has also advanced on the Michigan Interchange component of the project. Two of four new road bridges are already open. Preparation work continues on new ramps that will connect the US Port of Entry to and from I-75, and on the I-75 ramps that will connect to local roads in Detroit. The Gordie Howe International Bridge project is an example of sustainable infrastructure – one that is socially, environmentally and economically responsible.
Throughout their construction, the tops of the towers have been encased in jump forms that provide workers with an enclosed environment. The exterior of these jump forms provided the perfect canvases for murals that were painted by artists from Walpole Island First Nation, Caldwell First Nation and Southwest Detroit. The murals, which can be seen by travellers on local streets and the Detroit River, feature the Canadian maple leaf and the American stars and stripes and visual stories about the culture and diversity of the region.
“It is an exciting time as the towers move into the next and final build phase,” says WDBA CEO Bryce Phillips. “With the towers currently standing at over two-thirds of their final height, they represent the significant progress the project 4 team has been able to achieve.”

Although the virtual format of the 30 Anniversary Business Excellence Awards in May 2021 was a big success, there's nothing like actually being together to honour local companies, organizations and individuals for their contributions to our local economy and to the Windsor-Essex community. This year, attendees will feel the energy and excitement as the Winner's names are announced from the stage, while acceptance speeches are delivered and just the overall positive vibe of all being together in a safe environment. For more details and the latest news on the BEAs, follow us @BEAyqg on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Celebrate excellence in business. Celebrate in person. Accounting during his visit to The campaign has received glowing reviews from the community. Debi Croucher of the Downtown Windsor BIA shared, “Thanks to you, Maiden Lane was transformed into the downtown Holiday Village, our very own North Pole where residents and visitors would enjoy a local winter wonderland. Carols on the Corner serenaded passers-by; pop-ups by local artists, crafters, artisans and hobbyists and retailers greeted shoppers; and Santa in the Lane appeared in a snow globe for a socially distanced and safe meet and greet with the little ones. None of that could have been possible without the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce, and for that, we are so grateful.”
