“The mission of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce is to be the key connector and advocate for the long-term business success of our Members.”
Message from the President & CEO and Chair
July|August 2021 Business Briefs
Greetings Chamber Members and Friends, The first half of 2021 has not been without its challenges, but I would like to congratulate all of you on your perseverance and strength during these trying times. Our region has seen COVID-19 case numbers lowered, vaccine rates increase, and overall movement toward a successful reopening of our economy. The Chamber con nues to advocate for the Windsor-Essex business community on issues that affect our region directly. We con nue to urge the Ontario Rakesh Naidu Mila Lucio Government to take safe and rapid steps to expedite its reopening plan as we are President & CEO Chair concerned for many of our local businesses that are s ll unable to open. We are also advoca ng for the federal government to ease current border restric ons and consider fully vaccinated Americans as safe to cross the border. This would provide an increase in business to the local tourism and hospitality industry – many of whom are s ll closed and have taken a huge hit during the pandemic. We would like to extend a warm welcome to the 70+ Members who joined, and the hundreds of Members who renewed their membership with the Chamber so far in 2021. Your ongoing support allows the Chamber to con nue advoca ng for local business and con nue to make unique and significant contribu ons to our region. Please check out the list of new Members later in this magazine and support your fellow Chamber Members whenever possible. One of the exci ng ways we are able to showcase local businesses is with our Business Excellence Awards. This year, we celebrated our 30th Anniversary of the event with a virtual awards show. Congratula ons to all of the winners that were th announced on May 20 and thank you to our commi ee of volunteers who helped to make the event a success! We are looking forward to our upcoming 85th Annual Chamber Golf Tournament this coming September, as we had to postpone our original date due to rain. We are proud to host the region's longest running corporate golf tournament, and we were encouraged by the number of our Members who registered to join the event. We SOLD OUT of our foursomes for this tournament – a good indica on that many of you are ready to return to in-person events in a safe manner. Registra on is already available online for the 86th Annual Chamber Golf Tournament at Essex Golf & Country Club scheduled for Monday, June 13, 2022 . We look forward to re-introducing other in-person events and networking opportuni es when it is safe to do so. In June, our Chamber year came to a close and we said goodbye to three out-going Board Members. We would like to formally recognize the work of Marie Campagna, Maureen Lucas and Sco Jenkins and thank them for their support of the Chamber over the past years. At this me, we also welcome Angelo DeMarco, Steven Jelich, Debra McVeety, Ashok Sood, and Emerging Leaders Rep, Chris Da Silva to our Board. It will be our pleasure to work with you as the Board of Directors con nues to champion for the long-term success of businesses in Windsor and Essex County. We thank each of you for your ongoing support and trust in the Chamber. As our region con nues to recover, the Chamber remains focused on suppor ng local business and being the 'Voice of Business' in Windsor and Essex County. As always, we welcome your feedback and look to you for input to shape our future efforts. Please con nue to reach out to the Chamber Team with ques ons, concerns or insight so we can be er assist our region's economic recovery. TOP 10 Takeaways from the 2020-2021 Business Excellence Awards th
There were many things to like about the 30 anniversary of the Chamber's Business Excellence Awards, presented by Windsor Star: the Stay At Home Ticket Packages, the goodies in the Johnson Insurance gift bags, the accomplishments of all 12 winners, live trophy presentations, and perhaps the most-commented on element, the 'Early Evening Show' theme with Master of Ceremony Gordon Orr. Highlights included Gordon's interaction with AM800's Mike Kakuk, the conversation with Windsor Star's Amanda Reid, enjoying Plant Joy donuts and, of course, his homage to David Letterman's Top 10 List. th
Word is some people are still laughing, and groaning, at Gordon's jokes during the May 20 virtual broadcast. Thank You Gordon! You did a fantastic job hosting the BEAs for the fourth time.
| Business Briefs - July|August 2021
In keeping with the 'Early Evening Show' theme, here are the Top 10 Takeaways from the 2020-2021 Business Excellence Awards:
4
#1
Patience Really Is A Virtue: The Business Excellence Awards finally happened, 364 days later than originally planned, as an in-person event at the Chrysler Theatre and St. Clair College Centre For The Arts (who demonstrated again what great partners they are).
#2
And Diversity Is Divine: Windsor-Essex will always be The Automotive Capital of Canada (on the way to becoming the Automobility Capital) but the list of BEA Nominees and Finalists exemplifies the diversity of our region. The Winners list included a winery, bake shop, artist, hospital CEO and a logistics company
#3
Like Mother, Like Son: Dane Fader, owner and co-founder of GreenerFarms, and winner of the inaugural Green Innovation Award, is the first second-generation winner. His Mom, Julie, won the Small Company of the Year Award in 2019 for Head of the Class. Dane graduated from the University of Windsor, who co-sponsored the Green Innovation Award along with the UofW Alumni Association
#4
Get The Brooms Out: Local manufacturing companies swept the Small Company of the Year, Mid-Size Company and Large Company Award categories, with hardware presented to Colasanti Controls, Brave Control Solutions and Cavalier Tool.
#5
Casual Is Cool: The virtual format meant a much more relaxed dress code, a good fit for an event on a warm May evening, but did we really need to see emcee Gordon Orr in his pj's?
#6
Handshakes, Hugs And Air Kisses: Humans are social creatures, we need to interact with others and while the virtual format was a success and the best alternative due to restrictions on gatherings, nothing tops being in the same room together.
#7
Volunteers Are Vital: Kudos to the members of the BEA Committee and to the Judging panel for their hard work and commitment, at a time when their day-jobs, families and other responsibilities were keeping them on the go. Work started on the event in June 2019.
#8
Great Grub + Wet Goods: Over $38,000 was spent amongst 19 local restaurants through the purchase of dining cards for the Stay At Home Ticket Packages. Thanks to EPIC Wineries for showcasing their products in the Johnson Insurance gift bags. continued on page 5

#9
Virtually Endless Possibilities: The virtual format, increase in social content and other changes to this year's BEAs opened the door to more exciting opportunities and uses of technology. Props to Cogeco for the first-ever live airing of the Awards on YourTV and on YouTube, and to Media Street Productions for another amazing job of video story-telling, sponsor recognition and a seamless stage show.
#10
Thirty Becomes Thirty-One: The BEAs really are the Premier Business Event of the Year, and they'll be celebrated for the 31st time Thursday May 19, 2022 at the Chrysler Theatre and St. Clair College Centre For The Arts. Start thinking of companies, organizations and individuals to nominate in 12 Award categories. Nominations open in September and Finalists will be announced in January. On May 13, 2021, the Windsor-Essex Chamber of Commerce launched its WEStaySafe Rapid Antigen Testing Program, in partnership with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, WETech Alliance, the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, Digital Main Street and both the Amherstburg and Leamington Chambers of Commerce to bring free COVID-19 rapid tests to small and medium-sized businesses in the region. The latest information from Health Canada suggests that up to 1/3 of people carrying the virus are asymptomatic and over 50% of known cases are transmitted by an asymptomatic carrier. This makes it incredibly important to find asymptomatic carriers to combat virus spread and get to a more normalized community life. The rapid tests are just that – they're quick, with results ready in just 15 minutes. Employees self-administer the non-invasive test at their workplace. This program keeps your business open and offers peace-of-mind to your staff and customers. To date, our Regional Chamber Network has given out over 22,000 rapid tests to businesses in Windsor-Essex with 150 employees or less. “I became aware of the WeStaySafe COVID-19 Rapid Test program through one of my regular emails from the WindsorEssex Chamber of Commerce. At that time, I thought it was really great that they were offering this, but did not see a need for it with respect to my business. A few days later, I found out that two of my employees had not been vaccinated and most likely were not going to be. This caused me great concern but I did not let on that it did. Then I remember the email I had received and I approached my one employee about it, the other employee was away, and asked if she would be willing to participate in the program and without hesitation she said yes. She mentioned it to my other employee when she returned and now both of them are testing two times a week and think it is fantastic that it has been made available to them”. It gives all of us great peace of mind knowing that if there should be an issue, we will catch it early enough to take the necessary steps to prevent the spread of the virus and care for the health of the employee. Thank you Chamber!” Lois Baker, Sr. Partner AccountAbility Bookkeeping Inc.
