prepress
prepress
/ this technique is to save ink and avoid drying problems on the printing press / when a subject has dark area, the four colour process will normally reproduce it using large dots of all four colours, wherelese an identical effect can be achieved using only one or two colours The tint show on the left, 90% C + 70% M + 60% Y, can be simplified - roughly - by removing all three colours at the 60% level and replacing them with a 60% black tint together with the remaining 30% C and 10% M, as shown on the right
bleeds & quiete zone / extends objects off the print area to ensure that when the paper is trimmed during the finishing process, the ink coverage extends to the edges of the paper and we don’t get any white spaces around the edges / 1.5 mm from all edges (standard products) and 3mm for booklets Remember ! / the image will be trimmed, no important information at the edge or close to the bleed line
/ when heavy dots of all four colours overprint each other, there are drying and other problems, and more ink is used than is necessary
Scanning tip
bleed example
bleed example
/ to avoid this situation, the scanner can be set to remove most of all of the magenta and yellow in the dark areas, leaving mainly black, sometimes with some cyan to improve the density

undercolour removal (UCR)
/ a crossover is a printed object that extends from one page to the next
imposition / crossover / binding /
signature
/ binding methods affect crossover position and alignment
Imposition / is the positioning of the pages in the right places on the plate / when printed they reproduce in the required order and in the correct position, with the intended margins
before binding
after binding
/ most printing machines print 4, 8, 16, 32, 48 (or multiple of these) pages
Signature
/ a group of pages printed on the same sheet, front and back
colour shift can occur when crossovers print on different forms
thicker rules help conceal misalignment
/ after printing the sheet is folded so that the pages fall in correct order
imposed 16-page signature and folded signature
prepress
ss / avoid printing important text acro be two pages, because part of it will lost in the binding unt / some designer add a small amo pass that lines head to of space so through the fold of a crossover the text will be legible te / diagonal artwork can exaggera misalignment in folding and binding / colour can print differently on oppo site sides of paper
