Fort-ify Your History
Castles by the Sea! Castillo San Felipe del Morro & Castillo San Cristóbal Taking more than 250 years to construct, Castillo San Felipe del Morro, an imposing fortress, was completed in 1790. Located in Old San Juan, it was built to protect Puerto Rico from attacks approaching via the Atlantic. Today, some of the original cannons still face the ocean. The U.S. Army has since given this treasure to the National Park Service. Six levels strong, it’s weathered walls, archways, and nooks with the sapphire blue Atlantic backdrop are perfect for photos. You’ll also find Puerto Rico’s oldest lighthouse here and can walk along the lower level onto the Atlantic sands. El Morro faces the sea; Castillo San Cristóbal was completed earlier in 1765 to defend against enemies approaching by land. Make a day of it!
Did You Know? Puerto Rico was “discovered” by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and was originally named Borikén earlier by the indigenous Taíno. Legend says that when Juan Ponce de León first entered the San Juan Bay, he exclaimed, “¡Qué puerto rico!” (What a rich port!). Thus, the island was renamed. Subjected to various siege attempts, Puerto Rico remained a Spanish colony until 1897 when it was given dominion status. The signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1898 transferred control of Puerto Rico from Spain to the U.S. And in 1917, Puerto Ricans officially became U.S. citizens. Bioluminescent Mosquito Bay Curious about bioluminescence? Puerto Rico’s Vieques Island is home to the “Brightest Bio Bay in the World” (Guinness Book of World Records 2008). Its nighttime luminescence is caused by microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates that glow bright blue when they physically contact another object. Their bay effects are best seen during a new moon phase.
