PROUD TO BE A WOMEN’S COLLEGE Wesleyan College is committed to women’s education and helping every student find her voice and purpose. Founded in 1836 as the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women and shaped by Methodist values, Wesleyan provides students an academically challenging and relevant liberal arts education. Wesleyan draws a wonderfully eclectic mix of women – about 800 in all – from across the United States and more than 17 countries, bringing to campus a multitude of backgrounds and ethnicities. Wesleyan students choose to study here because they want to test their limits. The bar is set high because our students demand it. First for Women isn’t just a claim to fame - it’s a philosophy that explains why Wesleyan women continue to make history today.

The purpose of A.X.I.S. is to experience, learn, and teach cultural and international awareness through events, activities, and trips. A.X.I.S. is open to all students who are interested in international awareness and cultural exchange. During the academic year we celebrate two major events: an International Dinner during the Fall semester, and an International Festival during Spring. We also arrange trips around the Macon and Atlanta area, and International Coffee House meet-ups.

STUNT

MATES

A program that connects international and domestic students together based on interests and hobbies. Our mission is to promote friendships that span across native languages and culture.

PROUD TO BE A WESLEYAN GRADUATE Monica Mohanty’s ’18 father emigrated to America from India in 1970 to earn his Ph.D. in botany at Oberlin College in Ohio. Today, he serves as professor of plant physiology, molecular cell biology, and genetics at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. Her mother joined her father in America later and today serves as a special education teaching assistant at a high school in Augusta. Monica, an only child, was born in America and is fluent in the Indian dialect Odia. Earning her degree in biology, magna cum laude, with a minor in studio art, Monica credits Wesleyan’s liberal arts curriculum with allowing her to combine this unique set of interests. Monica said her greatest accomplishment was presenting her research at the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians, where she and her team placed 2nd in the undergraduate research category. Their research influenced Monica’s desire to become a primary care physician in rural Georgia. Monica says that most of the women in her family have earned a master’s or higher degree. Her cousins Nita and Namita Mohanty, Wesleyan Classes of 1999 and 2003 respectively, both went on to earn their medical degrees and are practicing physicians today.

RESIDENTIAL CAMPUS Most traditional undergraduate students live on campus, which is one of the primary benefits of the distinctive Wesleyan experience. Residence hall living provides a healthy environment for you to grow socially and intellectually.

THE WORLD IS YOUR CAMPUS

In addition to living and studying with peers from all over the world, students are encouraged to participate in a study abroad experience or join the faculty on planned study-travel courses to places like China, Greece, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, the Netherlands, and South Korea.

EVERYONE BELONGS

A model of racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic inclusion and success, Wesleyan students hail from across the U.S. and around the world. Approximately 40% of Wesleyan students are women of color and about 11% are international.

TOP TEN REASONS TO ATTEND WESLEYAN 1. BE AMONG THE WORLD’S FIRST

2. SOAK IN SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY

In 1836, Wesleyan College became the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women. We take our role as a pioneer in women’s education seriously. Today, we continue to educate women to do the extraordinary in their professions and in service to their communities.

3. ENJOY OUR SAFE & BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS

Our beautiful 200-acre lakeside campus and century-old trees are a beautiful contrast to our recently renovated residence halls; multi-million-dollar athletic, wellness, and equestrian facilities; state-of-the-art science center; 1,200-seat auditorium; three professional art galleries; and natural arboretum with outdoor learning laboratory.

5. CHOOSE FROM HIGH-DEMAND PROGRAMS

Through Wesleyan’s Friendship Family Program, faculty, staff, and alumnae are matched with a student to share American culture. The student will be invited to informal dinners, holiday celebrations, family outings, or other events that add to the richness of the international student’s experience in the U.S.

4. LEARN TO NAVIGATE YOUR CAREER

Wesleyan guarantees career preparation and professional development so students gain knowledge and skills that can transfer to the workplace. Through our From Here to Career program, we teach students to understand how to navigate their own career development journeys. These are building blocks students will continue to use the rest of their lives.

Year after year, business and psychology are among Wesleyan’s top majors. Twenty-three majors and thirty minors offer students strong programs in social, natural, and behavioral sciences, professional studies, mathematics, humanities, and fine arts. Also, Wesleyan offers pre-professional programs including: allied health, athletic, dental, engineering (dual-degree), law, medicine, pharmacy, veterinary, and 3+3 law program (dual-degree).

6. ENGAGE WITH WORLD CLASS FACULTY

Wesleyan’s faculty has been ranked among the best in the nation with 90% (full-time faculty) holding the highest degree in their fields from places like Oxford, MIT, Georgetown, Duke, Loyola University, University of California at Berkeley, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, and Yale. You won’t find large lecture halls on our campus. Our professors teach seminar-style. Our students say that professors are definitely the best part of Wesleyan.

7. CONDUCT UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH

Unlike many other colleges, Wesleyan offers undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct their own research and serve as assistants in faculty labs, giving them an advantage over other students applying to graduate school.

8. JOIN OUR WORLDWIDE NETWORK OF ALUMNAE

The world’s first women’s college established the world’s first alumnae association in 1859! We look forward to welcoming future alumnae into the sisterhood of the Wesleyan College Alumnae Association - a global network of life-long friends that stay connected through participating in alumnae activities, communicating ideas, sharing experiences, and creating opportunities for professional networking and personal growth.

9 DEVELOP CRITICAL SKILLS FOR LIFE AND CAREER

A women’s college education creates leaders, communicators, and persuaders who speak up and speak out. 93% of employers say “a demonstrated capacity to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems is more important than [a candidate’s] undergraduate major.” A liberal arts education means studying broadly— taking classes in many different subjects— and building skills that are geared toward more than just one profession.

10. REAP THE BENEFITS OF LIVING ON CAMPUS

We believe residence hall living provides a healthy environment for you to grow socially and intellectually. Each step in our living environment prepares students for independent living after college. During their first two years on campus, students live in the residential quad buildings that include single and double occupancy rooms or suite-style living with a common shared bathroom. Upper-class students can opt for apartment style housing.
