The Wesley School “Academic Excellence & Character Development within the Circle of Family.
mission statement The Wesley School builds confidence and encourages independence through a challenging academic program that stretches each student to reach the highest level of individual achievement within a supportive, nurturing environment. Wesley cultivates in students strong creative, physical, and spiritual foundations to prepare them to be productive and respectful contributors to a global society.
Dear Wesley Community, At Wesley, we want to prepare children for the world. Of course, that means we prepare them academically for high school and beyond. Of equal, and one might say of even greater importance, is the emotional well-being of our students. We’re happy that we were able shine a spotlight on Social and Emotional Learning at Wesley this past year. Our ability to prepare our students to meet the stresses and challenges of the world and not only survive but thrive makes us so proud. This year, our community showed great fortitude in accepting the demands of a full construction crew on campus. The emergent new Arts and Administration building and renovated spaces will be truly transformational for Wesley, while maintaining the warm and close knit community that we cherish. The joy that we share was evident in our Gala celebration in the spring. Our community came together to celebrate all things Wesley in the style of the roaring ’20s. Thank you for being a part of this wonderful Wesley family.

“The ground beneath my feet crunched slightly as I walked. It was bright. Sunshine in the afternoon. There was a forest surrounding a field of wildflowers. I got to a house in the clearing and went inside. The door to my bedroom was open, and I went in to look around. My toys and books were on the shelves, and my bed was neatly made so I sat for a while to rest. . .” The fifth graders sat quietly at their desks, eyes closed, some with heads down, others with their hands clasped calmly before them. They were being led through a visualization exercise to help them learn to tap into images, feelings, and senses that are calming and stress relieving. The exercise also develops the creative areas of their minds. After their eyes opened, students were asked to recount some of the sights, sounds and scents they experienced along their short “journey”. When asked how they felt about this exercise, the first comment from our students was “Can we do this again!?”
socialemotional learning “Wesley’s social and emotional learning program allows for regular activities to help our children learn to reduce stress and navigate through their own emotions.”
We like our students to be as open to their learning experience as possible. One of the key obstacles both to learning and overall childhood happiness is stress and anxiety. Taking a test, giving an oral presentation, or even just figuring out a new math problem can all cause a degree of stress for our children. Wesley’s social and emotional learning program allows for regular activities to help our children learn to reduce stress and navigate through their own emotions. These few minutes of regular weekly dedicated mindfulness practice help our children achieve academically without sacrificing their emotional well-being along the way. Wesley finds itself, once again, at the forefront of education. Social-emotional, mindful, and joyous learning have been an integral part of Wesley life well before their current recognition by the broader educational community. There is always more to learn and develop, which makes the support from Annual Giving so crucial to continuing professional development for our teachers and enrichment for our students.

professional development
spotlight Mindfulness Training at UCLA
A
nnual Giving gifts helped fund a range of Professional Development for our faculty. One exciting area of training that has had an immediate and significant impact on our students’ receptiveness to learning and overall well-being is the Social and Emotional Learning workshops and classes attended by our teachers and learning specialists. An example of these professional development opportunities is the Social, Emotional Arts (SEA) program at UCLA that teaches educators to use arts to promote social, emotional and cognitive skills. Educators learn to “take the temperature” of the classroom and modulate students’ energy through activities. They shift the behavior in a positive way, promoting a more harmonious environment for learning. Through simple techniques and exercises, the teachers can work individually and as a whole group to either calm or energize the students, depending on the task at hand. They help kids feel safe and free from anxiety so the rest of their brain can function more effectively. Daniel Goleman - preeminent author of such books as Working with Emotional Intelligence; Social Intelligence: the New Science of Human Relationships; and Focus: the Hidden Driver of Excellence, sums up the significance of Social and Emotional Learning: . . .helping children improve their self-awareness and confidence, manage their disturbing emotions and impulses, and increase their empathy pays off not just in improved behavior but in measurable academic achievement. At Wesley, we value happiness in a child’s education.

annual giving 2015-2016
W
hat is the magic formula that makes Wesley a special place for our children? For Wesley to consistently go above and beyond for all of our students, the answer often starts with our Annual Giving campaign. Annual Giving allows Wesley the necessary funding to say “yes” to classroom enhancements, offer robust professional development opportunities, provide new sports teams to accommodate even more students, and expand our visual arts program to name a few. The list goes on and on.
“Annual Giving impacts all students and faculty every day in every way.”
Annual Giving is essential to the ongoing success of our school and currently makes up approximately 4% of our budget. Funds raised are primarily unrestricted and go toward the general operation of The Wesley School. Annual Giving impacts all students and faculty every day in every way. In 2015-16, our Annual Giving campaign focused on Social and Emotional Learning in an effort to give Wesley students the tools to thrive in a complex world. In 2015-16 Wesley achieved 100% participation from our Trustees, Faculty, Staff, and Administrators and 95% from our parents. Grandparents, alumni families, foundations, corporate matching gifts and friends of Wesley made up the remaining total contribution of $339,000. Thanks to the generosity of our community, Wesley was able to increase our total giving by 13%, enhance our programming, and enriching the experience for all our students.

annual giving
donor sp otl i g h t
T
his year’s Annual Giving donor spotlight focuses on easily our most dedicated donor: the Wesley faculty. Year after year, we get 100% participation from the faculty and staff in the Annual Giving campaign. While one might look at that statistic and think “sure, it makes sense that the employees contribute” it is important to consider what that number actually means. It means that every full-time Wesley employee, from teachers, to office staff, to maintenance, feels so strongly about the Wesley community that they are willing to contribute back to it. In fact, the average amount given by a Wesley staff person is 30% higher than the average for peer schools in Southern California and 50% above the national average for elementary schools. Trisha Singletary, Art Teacher and Director of Diversity, has donated generously to Annual Giving year after year. Ms. Singletary noted that she takes a little out of her paycheck every month so she barely even notices it. By the end of the school year, her “little bits” really add up. She says that donating to Annual Giving makes her feel great since she knows that it is going towards the children who she cares for so deeply and she can have an impact that could last the rest of their lives. “I could spend this money on a big night out, but when I give to Wesley I know it is a good place for that money to go. I’m lucky since I get to teach the children year over year and really get to know them. I love all their different personalities and how much they enrich my life. As adults, we tend to over-think things and our approach gets overly complicated. Children have such a fresh and straightforward way of thinking. They help us break down our cluttered perceptions and see more clearly. When I give to Wesley, I think about the children that my gift supports, maybe by helping to cover tuition for someone who couldn’t afford it otherwise, or by providing extra support to cover all the different needs of our children.I came from public school, so I can really see the benefit of the smaller classes and smaller community that Wesley provides. It’s the type of school I would’ve liked to go to.” Moreover, our faculty always embraces the Annual Giving theme and gives us so many excellent ideas of how to expand and enact it. This year, Carol Martson, the Wesley Pride coordinator, took the theme of Social and Emotional learning and ran with it, enhancing the program, which includes mindfulness exercises and the immensely popular “Character Corner” where she and other faculty and guests use stories to provide social and emotional education.

capital campaign 2015-2016
T
his year, the Wesley community was able to witness the construction of the stunning first phase of the campus expansion. Thanks to funding from our Phase 1 Capital Campaign, a beautiful new Arts and Administration building rose up before our eyes. Within its brick walls (which blend Wesley’s classic style with contemporary architecture) you will find a comfortable reception area, the new offices of the Wesley administration, a faculty workroom that encourages cross-grade collaboration, the middle school history and English classrooms, and a state-of-the-art multimedia art studio. As of June 30, 2016, we raised $2.9 million of the $4.1 million goal. The over 200 gifts include full participation from the Board of Trustees, generous support from current families, and a large number of gifts from alumni families. We are incredibly grateful to these donors for their leadership in building a bright future for Wesley.
“This critical new construction will support the modest expansion of our community...”

Brick Campaign
This year marked the beginning of Wesley’s first Brick Campaign. It was an amazing success, attracting donors to the Capital Campaign from across the Wesley community. Current families, alumni, relatives, friends, and staff all have their names and messages engraved in the new main entrance walkway. We are so proud that so many members of the Wesley family want to be a part of the campus for years to come.

he single largest donation to Wesley School’s Phase 1 Capital Campaign was from an anonymous donor. Since that initial anonymous gift, we have had several more anonymous donations to our campaign. What does this say about the Wesley community? We are a truly philanthropic gathering of families. Philanthropy, or “love of mankind”, resonates with the values that we hold in our community. We care for one another - to the point that many of our most significant Capital Campaign gifts have come from Alumni and Middle School families who wouldn’t personally benefit from the capital expansion. Thank you to all who have made it possible to move forward with our campus improvements to provide enhanced opportunities for our students well into the future.

Wesley sure knows how to enjoy a great party! Three hundred lively guests, decked out in fabulous 1920s fashions, gathered at The Edison—a swanky downtown nightclub. Delicious food and drinks, and amazing dancing, music, shopping, and aerialist performances filled this magical evening. We raised a net total of over $100,000 at the Gala, which includes $30,000 donated by guests who raised their paddles in support of our new Art Studio and expanded art program. Thanks to Beth Fulton and Jill Whelan for creating an incredible event for our Wesley community.
