g grom report bailey rosen By Alberto Hernandez

In one of US4K’s recent Shop Spotlight articles, I had the privilege of interviewing the manager for Sun Coast Surf Shop in Florida. We had a great time talking, and I shared how US4K the magazine was interested in interviewing young talented surfers, stand up paddle boarders, and skaters for our monthly Grom Report. Without hesitation, I was told of a young stand up paddle boarder who not only loves “the stoke” of the ocean, but is one who gives back to her community in a great way. Bailey Rosen, is a young 18-year-old stand up paddler from the Gulf Coast of Florida. “I picked up a paddle for the first time 3 years ago on my home beach while working at Sun Coast Surf Shop. I instantly fell in love with the sport!” Rosen shared. “Since then, I have competed in races from North Carolina to Mexico, growing as an athlete and honing my SUP Racing and Surfing skills” Bailey proudly explained. Some of her recent accolades are: a third place finish at the Punta Sayulita Classic in Sayulita, Mexico; first place finishes in The Florida Cup in Treasure Island

Florida, Battle of the Paddle (18 and under) in Dana Point California, and Race the Lake of the Sky distance race in South Lake Tahoe, California. Bailey does not keep her love for stand up paddling and surfing to herself. She willfully shares her love for the sport with others. “I enjoy reaching out to younger paddlers through clinics, camps, and the creation of the Florida Junior SUP Team.” Rosen proclaimed I asked Bailey in what way does she find fulfillment in her sport? “I love giving back to my community through the sport I love and my passion for the ocean. I am often involved in charity, awareness, and volunteer programs.” said Rosen. One of the programs in which Bailey is involved in is the Ocean Crest Alliance program (this program is dedicated to restoring health to the world’s oceans). Bailey recently graduated from high school as a Summa Cum Laude with an International Baccalaureate Diploma. She looks forward to attending the University of California Los Angeles in the fall. “I will continue to take my paddling to the next level while living in Southern California and balancing my athletics with student life!” Bailey proudly exclaimed. I think we will be hearing a lot about this young and vibrant stand up paddle boarder for years to come.

During the last few months I have had the privilege of living in La Mision, Mexico, which is approximately 60 minutes from the US-Mexican border. Though Mexico does have a toll road, I like to travel through the scenic route alongside the coastal road. I love driving and feeling the ocean breeze and having the Pacific as my backdrop. As I was driving to meet my friend, Wesley Stewart and a family member of his who was visiting from out of state, I had a great opportunity to witness the beauty, the surf, and a couple of great hotels along the coast of Northern Baja, California. When I met my friend Wesley, who is the founder of Urban Surf 4 Kids, we were looking to meet and talk about some of

the great things that are happening with the US4K organization. My friend was staying at a nice hotel about a couple of hundred yards from the ocean. Wes wanted to take his teenage nephew paddleboarding in the area. I became curious as to why Wes chose to stay near the K38 surf spot. One of the better surf spots in Northern Baja California is the very famous K-38. K38 surf spot is located about 30 minutes from the US-Mexican border. Many watersports men and women rave about the surf at K38. The waves at K38 are point break that go from right to left. There is a reef bottom so be extra careful. The waves are at normal length, about 50 to 150 meters. On a good day, the waves can extend to about 150 to

300 meters. The swell size starts working at 1.0 to 1.5 meters. The area gets very crowded on the weekends. It is suggested that the serious surfer or SUPer visit the surf at K38 during the weekday. One of the best places to stay while you are enjoying some amazing water and action sports in the area is called, “Bobby’s Baja by the Sea Resort”. The hotel is very nice on the outside and is even more lovely on the inside. Wesley took me into a condominium like hotel that had all the amenities needed to enjoy a great and comfortable stay in Baja. The hotel is located very close to the ocean. Each room has a full kitchen and beautifully furnished room(s). There is a nice bar and grill for those who are drained from the surf and choose to eat out instead of cooking their food in their hotel room. The hotel is also conveniently located near the world renown, Puerto Nuevo. You and the family can eat fresh seafood, including crab straight out of the ocean. Many of the restaurants are located near, or on the ocean, so you and your significant other can enjoy a romantic dinner. There are a number of local areas where you and your other vacationers can enjoy some great nightlife, while you “let your hair down”. Another one of the great attractions near K38 are the dunes (the dunes are centrally located in the area, approximately a five minute drive from Bobby’s Baja by the Sea hotel). Wes’ nephew wanted to experience some dune riding on one of the quads that are available for rent in the area. For about $25-$35 dollars you can rent a quad for one hour (those prices vary based on the time and day of the week). What a blast he had riding the rented quad and taking video and pictures of his experience. One of the coolest things in the dunes is that the dunes are located right near the ocean. In other words, you are riding your dune and the Pacific ocean is your backdrop. As Wesley stated, “the view is simply breathtaking. Near one of the most famous restaurants in Northern Baja,La Fonda Restaurant, is K58 surf spot. I researched the surf and realized that not only was K58 a great place to spend a vacation, but the surf is awesome. While talking with Wes, I realized that K58 is one of the best surf spots in Baja due to the very consistent barreling lefts and rights. Wes also explained that at K58 it can be a little hard to paddle out because of the punishing breaks. When I met Wes, the winds were pretty strong, but for the most part, the conditions are ideal for the strong surfer and SUPer. Besides some great surf, and great food at La Fonda, there are very nice hotels that you can stay at for a very reasonable price. Most of the hotels near K58 are right smack on the beach, or relatively near the ocean. If you want to experience Northern Baja at it’s best, you and the family can take a trip (about a 25 minute drive) to Ensenada and get some of the best fish tacos on the planet. When the fish are in season (Usually depends on the fish, but for the most part there is a fish that is fresh in season year round) the tacos are some of the best tacos I have had, in this author’s opinion. All of

Northern Baja is geared towards the tourist, so there are a number of tourist attractions, watersport rentals, action sport rentals, and many other activities available. For the most part, everything is at a reasonable price, but if something seems to pricey, the people in Northern Baja Mexico are always willing to negotiate. As my friend Wesley and I began to take in the evening in his awesome hotel room, I began to think of how lucky we are. Wesley lives 30 minutes away from what some would deem “a surfers paradise”. Many people, across the globe, would “kill” for a chance to spend a few days surfing and experiencing the beauty of Northern Baja. Wesley and I are but a drive away to our paradise. If you have not had the chance to visit K38 and

K58 is one of the best surf spots in Baja due to the very consistent barreling lefts and rights. K58 and surf the beautiful and peaceful waves, I suggest you take a vacation there. If you have been sceptical about visiting Rosarito, Mexico or Ensenada, Mexico, I think you should listen to your adventurous voice. I believe that visiting these places will be a joy for you and the whole family. I also know that once you visit, you will not want to leave. So, for those of you who are looking to take a vacation to Northern Baja California, I say to you in the words of the native people here in Mexico, “Bien Benidos”, Welcome!
