Big Wave Dave’s DECEMBER 2014
O
Close Call
ne of the amazing people that Urban Surf has had the opportunity to know is our good friend and brother, Dave “Big Wave” Langer. He has spent countless hours encouraging our youth and sharing stoke with all of our volunteers. Unfortunately, our brother had a little bit of a scare, and we wanted to share a post that he sent us that explains his near death experience. The next couple of paragraphs are the fascinating and real dangers that big wave surfing can produce.
(Here is what Dave “Big Wave” Langer shared). “Ok I can communicate now. This was by far the most violent whitewash I've ever been hit by. Kealii Hawaii towed me into this perfect rather large left and I faded a long bottom turn seeking a thrill. Well I got one. When I looked at the wave after that turn I saw an ugly big mushy face that I should have gone around. I went halfway up the face and turned to run as a second thought and got eaten by the mushy whitewash. That underwater ride was not so bad. It's the next two sections that became beyond violent. The thing ripped at me like an animal. Folded me in half backwards (scorpion), and I heard a pop. Then the third beating was just as violent yet the damage was done. One whitewash,
with 3 beatings growing more severe as they went. That's Nazaré for you. I felt warm fluid run down my leg and knew my back had been torqued. Was it blood running down my leg? Was my back broken? I told Kealii we should go to the beach when he picked me up as I was prepared for the worst. Blood check ok. Numb feet negative. As it turned out my back was simply strained and I popped a ligament (thus a very bad bruise). I am so lucky in that it could have been much worse as I imagined it was. The wave rolled me all the way into the beach practically taking a while to do so. I went for my spareair towards the end of it yet bailed to focus on surfacing. The next wave was right there of course. All in all, it was a humbling experience and the support is amazing here in Nazare. Thank you guys for your care and well wishes, thank you Nazaré for sparing my leg and back.” We are all grateful that Dave is alright and is recovering. We are also inspired by a man who goes after his passion in such a gritty manner. I am sure that everyone who knows Dave will share these sentiments, get well soon Dave, and as always keep the stoke coming!

There are many crossroads in our lives that prematurely dictate many of our destinies. I think about my own life and how various life difficulties paved the way for who I am as an individual. I can remember when a terrible hurricane hit the greater Texas area and how a couple of guys decided that they wanted to make a difference.Wesley Stewart, and a few of his buddies, traveled to Texas and in the process, Urban Surf 4 Kids was visualized and born. In the life of Alex Gray, an incredible pro surfer and an example to many around him, a crossroads event changed his life forever. I suppose, losing a family member is very hard and life-changing. In the case of Alex Gray, he lost not only a brother and friend, he lost the person who inspired him to do what he loves to do, and that is to surf. He was at a crossroads when his older brother died tragically. Many of us know stories of men and women who lose a loved one and who never recover from the loss. Maybe, as you are reading these words, you can relate to this crossroads experience. Alex Gray decided that he would take his tragedy and go down the road of promise, example, and triumph. Urban Surf 4 Kids the magazine is always seeking ways to inform our readers about the great things that are going on in our coastal communities. US4K the magazine is proud to share the stories of some of the most influential surfer’s from around the globe. This article shares but a glimpse of the heart and admired life of not only a great surfer, but an incredible man who inspires many. In our December edition we are excited to be able to talk a little bit with pro surfer, Alex Gray. Alex Gray is not only an exceptional professional surfer, but he is also a world traveler, lobster diver, and paddler. Alex is one of the stars of the Drop Zone and has also had the privilege to Cohost the Surfer Poll Awards. Here is the inspiring interview with an inspirational human being. Alex Gray gets straight to the point and, as you will learn, he is making an impact in the lives of many young people, not only in the surf industry, but also in his community. Alex Gray is a man who goes over the deep end of life. He lives his life to take risks and to give back to those who need him the most. US4K Magazine: How long have you been surfing, and what are some of your favorite surf breaks? Alex Gray: “I have been surfing for approximately 18 years. I enjoy a number of surf spots. I guess what I enjoy more than the actual sport is to ride the waves with my friends.” US4K Magazine: What inspired you to begin your love for surfing?
8
DECEMBER 2014
Alex Gray: “My brother Chris truly inspired me to begin my love for surfing” (Chris Gray was Alex’s older brother who died tragically at the age of 20). US4K Magazine: How do you give back to your community? Alex Gray: “I’ve spoken to every school in my community. I recently fought the City Council to approve a skate park. They said yes, and we are currently raising funds. I’m working with the local high school surf team. I also spoke to every Junior Guard group in the South Bay this summer. I put on a ‘Cradle of the Storms’ movie premiere from a trip to Alaska last winter. I try to donate as much of my time to the Jimmy Miller Foundation, as he was the one who introduced surfing to my family.” US4K Magazine: What made you want to give back in that way? Alex Gray: “Because of my love for my community. I was given a great education filled with inspirational mentors. I would not be where I am today without the help of others. I hope to be as positive and influential to the next generation as people were to me.” US4K Magazine: What motivates you to continue to give back? Alex Gray: “A saying I love is: ‘You have to remember where you came from to get to where you are going’. In essence, this means that I will never lose sight of where my surfing career started and those who helped me along the way. Knowing that my brother, Chris, would have loved to have been here with me every step of the way, inspires me more than anything. Alex Gray dedicates his life not only to his sport, which he loves and in essence keeps him connected with the man who inspired him eighteen years prior, but he is a true example of remembering where you come from. This world needs more Alex Grays in it. Urban Surf 4 Kids the magazine is inspired by, motivated by, and thankful for people like Alex Gray. I have had the privilege of interviewing and meeting some wounderful people in the surfing industry. Many of them have inspired me and those whom they come into contact with on a daily basis. Alex Gray is one of those people who is making a difference. In essence, he is going, and will continue to go, over the deep end. A crossroads moment changed the life of one man and brings stoke to those he comes into contact with every day.

US4K 2014 Recap By Alberto Hernandez
W
hat a year! 2014 has been a great year for Urban Surf 4 Kids and the Urban Surf 4 Kids Ohana! The year started out with a bang. US4K was honored to host a couple of surf camps in San Diego, CA. With the leadership of founder Wesley Stewart, Urban Surf 4 Kids surf camps were inaugurated in Orange County, Hawaii, and Mexico. People from around the globe are hearing about the great things that US4K is doing, and they are all on board. Urban Surf 4 Kids is excited to be able to empower foster youth from all parts of the nation and abroad. In May, Urban Surf 4 Kids took a number of orphans from Playas de Tijuana, Mexico to Cabo San Lucas for our “Dreams of Baja” achievement pro-
12
gram. The kids had so much fun surfing and teaching the orphans in Cabo San Lucas how to surf. In July and August, US4K hosted two groups from Nevada for our “So Cali Dreaming” event in Imperial Beach, CA. Two incredible groups of foster youth, and aged out foster youth, had the time of their lives. US4K hosted a number of activities including, sailing, paddle boarding, a surf camp, a feed the homeless event and the “So Cali Dreaming Event”. During that event, there were a few artists who shared their hearts and talents with the foster youth. Thanks Cody Lovass and Ryan Brolliar, for empowering our youth with your music.
DECEMBER 2014 In October, US4K hosted “Paddle Fest”, a paddle board competition, where all the proceeds went to our annual “Dreaming of Aloha” event. There were many competitors, and Ryan Brolliar entertained at a concert in honor of all the foster youth. What a blast we all had! We also had a chance to hear the inspiring story of Tom Jones, the G.O.A.T.! The event reached its climatic point when paraplegic water sports athlete, Charles “Chaka” Webb, not only competed in the competition, but also hosted our first noncompetitive paddle out with foster youth and a number of the day’s competitors. The year’s activities ended with the “Dreaming of Aloha” event, where US4K took a group of foster youth to Hawaii for a dream vacation during the Eddie Aikau Surf competition event there. In the middle of December, US4K will host the annual

“Deck ‘Em Out for the Holidays”, a gift wrapping event where a number of gifts, filled with water-based attire, will be given to foster youth and orphans in San Diego and Mexico. We all had an amazing year! Our volunteers made this year a great year for Urban Surf 4 Kids. Thanks to everyone who took the time to volunteer and share their hearts and lives with our youth. Special thanks to all of our volunteers, donors, sponsors, and community members. I know that 2015 will be even better. We look forward to seeing you all out at our events. And remember, it’s all about sharing stoke and empowering all our youth—one heart at a time! Aloha!

SURF TRAVEL SPOTLIGHT SAYULITA, MEXICO One of the most popular surfing places in Mexico is the small village Sayulita located near Puerto Vallrta. The wilderness, jungle, beaches and ecosystem are just a small piece of the natural beauty you will find while visiting here. Apart from the natural beauty you can visit the local restaurants and bars and enjoy a drink on the beach and relax. Surfing is not the only activity you can do while visiting Sayulita. In the past few years this village is a famous destination for newlyweds looking for a different kind of wedding and after that continuing with their honeymoon. The beach offers the excellent conditions for all surf levels from first time surfers to professionals. Although the beach provides surfing conditions throughout the entire year the best period to surf here is from December to early April. In this period you can get higher waves and longer rides. The right brakes are perfect for beginners and long board surfers, while the speedy left breaks give excellent conditions for rippers and short board surfers. This period of the year is when the humpback whales are in the Sayulita's bay helping the surfers waiting for the perfect wave. If you spend your day on the beach surfing you can enjoy the evening attending one of the live music venues this place has to offer. Fun,sun, great local food, and warm water! We love it! WEATHER CONDITIONS Just as you would expect, the weather conditions here are perfect at Sayulita. The highest temperature is in July ranging from low 80's to mid 90's and the lowest is in March
ranging from low 70's to low 80's (ahhh perfect!). The water temperature may vary a few degrees but that would not be a problem as it will be excellent for surfers. Bigger temperature difference happens mostly after heavy rains or when the offshore winds are stronger. That is when the deeper cooler water replaces the surface water that has been warmed. Aside from the warm weather it is suggested that you wear 2 mm neoprene top or a shorty in the morning and the evening because it is known to be windy. GETTING THERE Getting to Sayulia is not very difficult. Take the main coast highway (200) from Puerto Vallarta toward Campostela and then take the turnoff to the right at Sayulita to get to the beach. AIRPORT Several direct flights into Puerto Vallarta airport from Southern California and our personal favorite Volaris direct from Tijuana (we have flown round trip for under $125 total!). EQUIPMENT You don't have the need to carry your surfing or any kind of gear. At Sayulita's shops you can find long and short board for the kind of surfing that you want. Renting a long board is perfect if you are an amateur and if you want to catch more waves. Beginners can also take surfing lessons that usually last 90 minutes using a rental board and a rash vest in order to master the art of surfing.

g grom report chris villanueva by alberto hernandez
Urban Surf 4 Kids the magazine is always looking to share the stories of young people who enjoy stoke and at the same time are passionate about surfing and giving back to their respective communities. For the past year, Urban Surf 4 kids has had the pleasure of watching the growth and maturity of one of its youngest and most dedicated volunteers. Chris Villanueva is a young groom who shares his heart for surf and serving the community with the foster youth in the San Diego area. I had the privilege of interviewing Chris, and I must say I was quite impressed with his maturity and his desire to give back. US4K Magazine: “So, tell me a little about yourself.” Chris Villanueva: “Well, my name is Chris Villanueva. I was born and raised in San Diego, California. I am seventeen years old and I am currently a senior in high school.” US4K Magazine: “Great. Will you share a little about some of your hobbies?” Chris Villanueva: “I enjoy wrestling and playing lacrosse. I also love to snow board, paddle board, and surf.” US4K Magazine: “Where are some of your favorite spots to surf in San Diego?”
22
Chris Villanueva: “I pretty much will surf anywhere in San Diego. I have surfed in different areas, but I guess if I had to choose, my favorite spot to surf would have to be Imperial Beach, California.” US4K Magazine: “How did you hear about Urban Surf 4 Kids?” Chris Villanueva: “I go to the same church that founder, Wesley Stewart, attends. One day, we were talking about the surf in Imperial Beach and he invited me to one of his surf camps for the foster youth in San Diego. I attended the event, and I have been volunteering with Urban Surf ever since.” US4K Magazine: “Are there any specific things you do for Urban Surf 4 Kids?” Chris Villanueva: “After I attended the event, I decided to start an Urban Surf 4 Kids surf club at my school. I wanted my friends, who also enjoy surfing and serving, to experience what I was experiencing. I shared about the club with some friends at school, and the rest as they say, is history.” US4K Magazine: “Are there any other ways that you give back to your community besides volunteering for US4K?” Chris Villanueva: “Besides volunteering with Urban Surf 4 Kids, I also enjoy volunteering at my church. Many times I have had the opportunity to attend different community events like feeding the homeless, and toy drives for the less fortunate children in San Diego and Mexico.” US4K Magazine: “Is there anything that you want our readers to know.” Chris Villanueva: “I guess I just want everyone to know that volunteering with Urban Surf 4 Kids is amazing. What I love most about surfing and serving the kids is when I see their smiling faces. I know when I see them smile, I have made a difference.”

13TH ANNUAL PURA VIDA NO PRO IN ESTERILLOS ESTE, COSTA RICA, WINS HEARTS This year's Pura Vida No Pro took place at the Hotel Pelicanos in Playa Esterillos Este, Costa Rica, on Saturday, November 22nd, where forty two children from the Hospicio de Huérfanos travelled from San Jose for a fun filled day at the beach. The day was beautiful and the beachfront hotel and restaurant offered the perfect setting for learning to surf, horseback riding, arts and crafts, pool time and games. Tug of war, a balloon toss and two piñatas added to a day filled with laughter, stoke and all around good vibes. After a delicious breakfast, over one hundred volunteers, consisting of local residents and tourists, were on hand to greet the guests; many served as sponsors for the day, taking one or more children to the different stations. By the time lunch was served at noon, the children were unwinding comfortably in an atmosphere of joy and love. Coming from the city, surfing is always a special highlight of the day as the children embrace the time in the ocean with extra exuberance. Many ride the first waves of their lives on this day, with the assistance of trained and experienced surf instructors. Nothing comes close to the shouts of stoke whenever a youth stands up, balances, and receives cheers from everyone around him or her. This experience can only be measured by the smile and confidence that suddenly appear on the child's
28
face, especially when it takes some perseverance to finally get up and ride one in successfully. The determination on the kids' faces melts hearts as they experience victory, only imagined prior to that day. The yearly event is funded by individual donations from the U.S. and Costa Rica in the "Sponsor a Child" campaign. Additional funds are raised through T-shirt sales and a huge raffle at the end of the day, which includes prizes donated by local businesses. La Fundación Ola de Esperanza,The Wave of Hope Foundation, is a non-profit organization that benefits at-risk youth institutions in Costa Rica, with programs like the Pura Vida No Pro. The goal is to improve health, education and career opportunities and involve members of the community, and anyone willing to serve, in the process. The Pura Vida No Pro has indeed become one of many such events that gives back more to a volunteer than he or she could ever give. For more information and to arrange travel for next year's PVNP, email event director, John O'Toole, at puravidanopro@ gmail.com. Please also visit the Facebook.com/The Pura Vida No Pro Group.

BETHANY DOMINICK by albert hernandez
One of US4K’s favorite volunteers is December’s volunteer of the month, Bethany Dominick. Bethany is a Marketing Manager and is completely passionate about surfing and the ocean. She loves traveling for warm water waves, drinking her first cup of coffee in the morning, eating any combination of peanut butter and chocolate, and meeting and spending time with adventure-seeking and warm-hearted people. Bethany has been volunteering with Urban Surf 4 Kids since June of 2014, and in her words states that she, “can’t believe I didn’t find them sooner.” Bethany had been looking for a volunteer program in which she felt truly connected to the cause, the activity, and the people involved in the organization. One day, she stumbled upon Urban Surf 4 Kids, and finally found a perfect fit. After watching one of the short films at the San Diego Film Festival about a Northern Californian organization teaching inner city kids how to surf, she wondered if there was something similar in San Diego. Through a little bit of research, Bethany found Urban Surf 4 Kids, and reached out to the founder, Wesley Stewart (Wes), immediately. She had just returned from living in Bali for a few months and working to get her life resettled in San Diego and therefore had a bunch of free time on her hands. She took her
32
first trip down to Imperial Beach, CA, to meet Wes at a coffee shop, where they talked for hours, while he filled her in on all the amazing things he was doing with his Urban Surf organization. From thenUS4K has been lucky to have Bethany help out with the So Cal Dreaming surf camps over the summer and with the rest of the volunteer team. “I can’t say enough kind words to describe this group of people. I was, and I am, blown away by the dedication this group commits to creating such a unique experience for these kids. They all have full time jobs and busy lives just like everyone else, yet donate their spare time to helping make a true positive impact in the lives of these children,” Bethany shared. Bethany has since provided her expertise, her talents, and her heart to help empower US4K’s youth. Bethany is the kind of person everyone wants to be around as she is always positive, outgoing, and has a smile that helps others. She is truly an important part of what Urban Surf 4 Kids does, and we are all grateful to have her as part of our amazing team. Urban Surf 4 Kids, and the US4K family is proud to present, December’s volunteer of the month, Bethany Dominick.
