WESLEY STEWART • URBAN SURF 4 KIDS
FOUNDER’S NOTES New Year. New Dreams As we turn the page on 2014 and charge into the New Year, we can’t help but look back and smile from all the success of this past year. For us here at Urban Surf 4 Kids we’re thrilled as ever. This past year we have been fortunate to serve over 400 kids in a record number of events, creating countless ear to ear grins. We’ve also proudly provided life changing “Surf & Serve” trips for a number of foster youth from Nevada, Baja Mexico and San Diego. Throughout the year, we’ve helped to educate, create community and give hope and enjoyment to so many … and we couldn’t have done it without the great big blue-the Pacific Ocean, the stage for our work. On one hand, the ocean is a place of peace, calm and relaxation. On the other, it can be a place of challenge, excitement and sheer terror. Somehow, the ocean embodies all of this and in doing so gives us a place that inspires and heals. To Give. For us, to give also sums up 2014. Powerful examples of giving were made by so many during 2014 and while on our Surf & Serve trip in Hawaii. From Hiriata Hart (Button’s wife) who never stopped sharing her smile and surfing expertise, to Uncle George from Bay of Dreams who gave us all a full day of stand up paddleboarding, and by surf legends Sunny Garcia, Jamie O'Brien, and Kala Alexander who spent time with us giving freely laughter and joy. These, and many others, gave and gave. And they gave without expecting anything in return other than a sincere thank you. This is what the Aloha Spirit is all about. And this is how we at Urban Surf 4 Kids strive to be. So as we embark on 2015, let’s continue to ride the wave and be empowered by giving without expectations. Let’s continue and encourage one another to make 2015 a year defined by our giving. Mahalo Wesley Stewart

On December 4th, Dreaming of Aloha took a trip to Hawaii’s North Shore to attend the Quiksilver 30th Annual In Memory Of Eddie Aikau Opening Ceremony. The Opening Ceremony marks the start of a 3 month holding period for the most prestigious big wave surf invitational in the world, known by many as simply, the Eddie. But the Eddie is not just your runof-the-mill, ordinary surf contest. No, the Eddie is unique, in that ocean conditions must come together in an ideal, massive way. A perfect storm must brew hundreds of miles away, blowing strong winds for several days, to create monstrous waves that will then march from the North Pacific into Waimea Bay on Oahu’s North Shore. The contest is held only when ocean swells, of 20 feet or greater, reach the bay and awaken into giant waves with face heights of 40 feet or greater (that is 5 times the height of your 8 foot living room ceiling!). The requirements for the Eddie are so specific, quality conditions so rare, and contest standards so high, that the actual event has only been held 8 times over the entire 30 year contest history.
Urban Surf 4 Kids spoke to Clyde Aikau, an invitee of this year’s Eddie, winner of the 1986 Eddie, and brother of the contest namesake, Eddie Aikau. Since Mother Nature decides when the Eddie will be held, those invited to participate in the contest have three months of waiting, watching, and living in suspense of whether the contest will actually be run this year or not. Clyde remarks “for an athlete in this kind of event, you need to keep positive for three months, you need to keep your body in tip top shape, you need to keep your mind positive, and the hard part is to keep your body in tip top shape for three months”. Being completely prepared for surfing waves of this magnitude is critical. “When you surf this kind of wave you’ve got to really want to ride it 101%. If you come into it at 99%, I don’t think you will feel as comfortable [as] at 101%”, Clyde says. He also warns of the dangers of surfing Waimea’s big waves, “it is a very dangerous wave to surf. People die, people break their bones, their backs. On the day of the actual event, everyone has a more cautious, ‘be careful’ type of mood”. To prepare the surfers for this danger and to pay homage to surfers that have come before them, the Opening Ceremony is held each year to bless the surfers, to thank the North Shore community for their support of the event, and most importantly, to honor Eddie Aikau and what he was all about. Eddie Aikau is a Hawaiian hero, and not just an accomplished surfer who enjoyed riding Waimea’s biggest waves, but also a true waterman who served as Waimea Bay’s first lifeguard, saving thousands of lives during his watch. Clyde also worked as a lifeguard with his brother and explains the challenge, “in those years, we didn’t have jet skis, we didn’t have a speed boat, we didn’t have helicopter, all we had was fins to go out and save lives in 20 to 30-foot waves. And I’m proud to say that we never lost one person in our 10 years of lifeguarding at Waimea
6

7
Bay. And Eddie being the first lifeguard at Waimea Bay is really, really special”. Interestingly, one might say the Aikau’s were fated to become protectors of the bay. Clyde explains, “my great great grandfather, a hundred years ago, was the manager and the high priest of Waimea. He was in charge of taking care of Waimea and he was entrusted to the job by King Kamehameha. Now, a hundred years later, Eddie becomes the first lifeguard and I join him to save lives, and Eddie rides the biggest waves on the planet at Waimea Bay. So you know things sometimes are meant to be, destined to be, and this situation surely is that way”. For 10 years, the brothers protected the shores of Waimea and then heartbreakingly, in 1978, Eddie Aikau died at sea. Eddie was a crew member of the Hokule’a, a double-hulled voyaging canoe, which was set to make a historic journey across the Pacific to Tahiti as the ancient Polynesians did—sailing by canoe and navigating only by stars. On the first night at sea, the Hokule’a got caught in a violent storm and capsized. With no way to call for help, and as the wreckage of the Hokule’a began to drift away from the islands, Eddie left the others and began to paddle on a surfboard back toward Hawaii for help. Tragically, he was not to be seen again.
Naming the Waimea big wave surf contest after Eddie is a way to honor his spirit and to inspire the younger generation. Clyde remarks “it’s a big deal, it’s a big deal. After 30 years, Eddie continues to inspire, not only the surfers, not only the people at Waima Bay, but Eddie continues to inspire young folks and the next generation”. And Clyde also does his part in inspiring the younger generation. As part of the Eddie Aikau Foundation which supports the youth with scholarships, essay contests, and other activities, Clyde goes to schools and makes presentations to thousands of children on what Eddie’s spirit and Eddie’s life was all about: helping others and not expecting anything in return. And for Clyde who has been through tragedy and many diffi-
8
cult situations, he points out that that life can be short and you never really know what is going to happen. He says, “I think it important for people to express themselves a lot more. You know, if you love your dad, you need to look him in the eye and tell him ‘Pops I love you’. There are a lot of macho things going on, with males especially, and letting people know how you feel, because life is so short and that person might not be here next week; who knows what will happen. So try to express yourself while you can, and love one another, and I think that is what Eddie’s spirit is all about also, because even me, at 65, it wasn’t until I was 31 years old, and my family and I are very close, and it wasn’t until I was 31 years old that I could look my father in the eye and tell him ‘Pop I love you’. And that is what the spirit of Eddie is all about. You need to express yourself because you never know what is going to happen tomorrow”. Of the 28 surfers invited to compete in Eddie’s contest, at age 65, Clyde is honored. “It is a privilege and honor surfing in Eddie’s event. For a guy like me that has been invited the past 30 years, I have gone through a lot—a lot of big waves, a lot of surfers have come and gone, and to be still recognized as one of the top, for me to still be around, I am privileged and honored”. When asked about surfing against world champions, younger guys, and other top notch big wave surfers, Clyde says, “for me personally, it is fun. I mean, the last time we had the event in 2009, I look on my left there was Andy Irons and one my right was Kelly Slater, and me surfing with these guys at 60 years old was a privilege, and an honor, and great fun”. But more importantly for Clyde, he says, “the idea of surfing waves of this magnitude is more of a personal challenge than anything else, and being invited to the event in honor of Eddie, that takes it up a notch. For me, surfing is not so much about surfing against the other guys in the event, it’s more about a personal endeavor for me and also honoring Eddie of how great he is”. Clyde is still charging at 65, and not because he has to do it, but because he still wants to ride these massive waves. “The people around me continue to support me and continue to motivate me. One of the big motivators in my camp is my 21 year old son. He’s a hot surfer, on the verge of greatness, and he continues to inspire me, as a surfer, as a big wave rider. He continues to inspire me and motivate me to continue to want to ride the biggest waves on the planet”.
JANUARY 2015 going to be a part of my life, maybe not at the extreme level, but enjoyment and fun, and being comfortable in the ocean will always be what I do”, Clyde also recognizes that “it is not so much how big a wave you surf, or how big a barrel you ride, or how large of a tube, or if you’re world champion, but what is important for people is that they just enjoy the water, whatever they do—surfing in Waikiki, boogie boarding, kayaking, SUPing, surfing big waves, surfing Pipeline—what’s important is that you can enjoy what you are doing and that you are giving yourself enjoyment”. But once again, Clyde warns of the sometimes harsh reality and danger of the sport, “he [my son] was surfing pipeline last week into 10-foot waves, and the wave, the lip crashed on his shoulder and he tore his shoulder, where he’ll have to get surgery and be out of the water for 4 months. This is waves of 10 feet; just imagine 20 to 30-foot. I’m just trying to tell you there is a fine line between ego and wanting to do something”. Clearly, the success and connection to surfing for Clyde comes from a deeper place and with great respect. He also reflects, “surfing is a wide spectrum of opportunity. Eventually, I might not be able to surf Waimea Bay at 20 to 30-foot, but I can have great fun in Waikiki surfing 3-foot waves. So surfing is always
And what about the famous phrase, ‘Eddie would go’? Clearly, the phrase transcends surfing and has a deeper meaning. Clyde explains it best: “it doesn’t mean just having the guts to surf the biggest waves in the world; it means that when you do something, when you do anything, that you do it at 101%, like how Eddie would. Eddie would go and save lives, Eddie would go and ride the biggest waves in the world, and almost everything he did, he did it with 100% heart, 100% spirit and 100% of himself, and that is what ‘Eddie would go’ means—you give 101% at anything”. And by hearing Clyde speak with the great admiration and respect for his brother, you can’t help but feel this brother also gives 101%.

g grom report levis perez
full name: Levis Uziel Ramos Perez
By Kate Hanley, Interview from Playa Jacó, Costa Rica Levis is a very modest seventeen year old from Boaca, Nicaragua, who has lived in Playa Jacó, Costa Rica, for the past ten years. Boaca is a small town in the center of Nicaragua, about one hundred and fifteen kilometers northeast of the capital city, Managua. He was ten when he arrived here and lives in a modest home with his mother’s friend. Most of his family is still in Nicaragua.
Being a Christian defines who Levis is, first and foremost. He plays the guitar in songs of praise every Thursday night at the Christian Surfers meetings as well as with the band at the Iglesia Radical on Friday evenings, both in Playa Jacó. He learned to surf, two and a half years ago, when some members of the Radical church introduced him to it and he has been hooked on surfing ever since. This coming year, Levis and a team of five surfers from Radical will be coached by Gustavo Corrales, a judge for the Federacion de Surf in Costa Rica, to compete in
the upcoming 2015 Costa Rican National Circuit. Levis also serves the community of Jacó as a volunteer lifeguard through the local municipality. A Christian missionary, Holly Kaplan, who served in Playa Jacó this past year, describes Levis as having a kind heart. She relayed a story of being out surfing in overhead waves and how, after struggling just to paddle out, she became anxious to get back on the beach. Levis paddled next to her and told her “grab my leash, I’ll keep you safe”. Holly considers him one of her best friends. Playa Jacó is proud to have youth in our community who are not only committed to the sport of surfing but to serving the community as well. Levis is a stellar example and we wish him the best in upcoming contests and commend him for the path he has chosen.
22
By the way, when asked if he had a favorite band or musician, Levis admitted he didn’t have a favorite band but is a big fan of Taylor Swift. And there you go.

ALOHA
DREAMING OF ALOHA
wanted to share with everyone how the “Dreaming of Aloha Achievement Program” became a reality, it started with a “what if” moment. What if a vision could turn into reality? That’s exactly what happened when we started developing our idea of the “Dreaming of Aloha Achievement Program.”
I
It all began when the Stewart family vacationed in Hawaii in November of 2012. They were mesmerized by the beauty of the islands and the warmth of the culture. As we began to think about the youth we serve, and work within San Diego, through our Urban Surf 4 kids(US4K) nonprofit program, we realized the majority of the foster youth would never have the opportunity to experience such a paradise. Our hope and goal was to make this dream become a reality. And so our mission began. We then set out to create our guidelines and goals for what would become our”Dreaming of Aloha” achievement program. We begin with some attainable goals to teach life lessons and guidelines that we hoped to give the foster youth a more positive outlook on life. Urban Surf 4 Kids, had a budget of 50K for the entire year of 2012. It was obvious that we knew we had a lot of hard work ahead and needed much support to achieve such an outrageous goal. The plan was to make this trip happen during two of surfing’s epic events the “Triple Crown” and the opening of the “Eddie Would Go ” ceremonies in December of 2013. The end of the year was fast approaching with only a few months left. After contacting several foster care agencies says founder Wesley Stewart. I remember the responses vividly, “You can’t take foster youth to Hawaii”. “I knew deep down this trip was meant to be, it was just too much of an opportunity to let some one tell me NO!” Wesley continued. Most of all it only added fuel to my fire and desire to give these kids an experience of a life time. When the director of social services heard about the trip there was trust and excitement, and so our God sent breakthrough began to unfold. We owe a lot to Kim Stolkowski who at the time was a recreational therapist at San Pasqual Academy. She was also one of whom 100% believed in this outrageous plan and pushed within social services circles to see this through it’s full potential and fruition. Our first Dreaming of Aloha trip to Hawaii was in December of 2013. You never know what to expect when you have foster youth from three different groups as well as their chaperones. Everything was new to them. For many of the foster youth, it was their first time on an airplane, first time to Hawaii, first time on a vacation, and so on. Even though the Dreaming of Aloha program was brand new for everyone, everyone bonded like family (Ohana). The environment flowed very nicely and anyone who was involved got involved and was present to lend a helping hand or offered words of encouragement. Our 2013 group really flourished beyond their dreams. They experienced something that they would cherish forever. They did activities such as hiking, surfing, SUP, swimming, volunteered, and met pro surfers and tried new things. They met Kelly Slater, Bruce Irons (brother of legendary surfer Andy Irons), John John Florence, and Kala Alexander at the opening of the Eddie. Aikau ceremonies. We also visited the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) with the fantastic “ Breath of Life” production show and a awesome Polynesian buffet dinner. It was our first trip together and they set the standard far above and beyond of what we hoped or imagined. We at US4K are so proud of our 2013 group and think very highly of all. We are also honored to say Kim Stolkowski , proudly attended the 2013 trip. (Mahalo Kim, Kipona aloha.) The last day we encouraged the youth to write a letter about how this trip impacted their lives. One of the counselors at the Center for Positive Change, Eric Johnson, put forth a challenge to the youth on the trip. That he would donated 100 dollars in their name for each letter he received. At first, many of the youth weren’t too keen on expressing themselves; but they decided to write. They all wanted other
DECEMBER 2014
foster youth to experience Dreaming of Aloha and so the powerful message/experience continues.
Which brings us to Dreaming of Aloha 2014. Our 2014 group was a bit smaller this year.and we as an organization were a bit more prepared. Never the less, that did not stifle all the Kipnoa Aloha (Deep Love)for one second. The hope and goal of service, sun, and fun were still the key components on this trip. I want to share with you how each day on our trip to Hawaii unfolded. Dreaming of Aloha 2014- December 2nd -9th @ Camp Homelani Let’s see if you could roll with these young hipters! December 2nd On December 2nd our plane departed out of San Diego to Oahu. The five hour flight seemed to speed by as we all anticipated the trip ahead. We arrived and loaded up our two mini vans headed to Camp Homelani in North Shore, which is ran by the Salvation Army who had dinner ready and waiting for us. The entire staff was welcoming. during dinner we took time to meet everyone. After dinner we went over our plans for the week and our schedule. The kids were already so excited to be there! Actually in Hawaii! It was such a joy to see their faces lit up. Camp Homelani is an awesome place to stay, they really took care of us like family. If you ever want to stay directly on the water, make sure to call David and Fulton at Camp Homelani. camphomelani.org. December 3rd It’s December 3rd at 8:00 am in the morning. Everyone woke up ready to rock! The girls in our group already developed a very expressive saying- “We’re in Hawaii”. We gathered together and had breakfast. Afterwards there was time for the youth to get some homework
done and tidy up their dorm areas. Then, the campground prepared the fixing for us to make a packed lunch, and then we headed out to Buttons Surf School for surf lessons. Button’s wife, Hiriata Hart, lead this special event for the kids. Buttons passed away from lung cancer the year before. He would of loved the idea to give back to our communities like this.
delicious food.) Today was a special day, The North Shore Shark Tour Company generously offered our foster youth to go shark diving with them. Now, quite honestly I did not think these girls (and the 1 boy) would want to swim with sharks. But they all jumped at the thrilling opportunity and yet again had an experience of a life time. Hariata Hart and her incredible staff are continuing his legacy and taught us a lot in the two hours as they gave their heart and soul. It was non stop fun in the water with the kids-a lot of laughing and splashing! If you ever travel to the North Shore, please spend some time with Button’s surf school. They really know how to give you the Aloha experience. (www.buttonssurfschool.com) After the water we went back to camp to prepare to go to the PPC (Polynesian Cultural Center). The youth were really engaged in the cultural lessons they offer. After having a buffet style Polynesian dinner we went to the broadway style show, “Breath of Life.” The Polynesian Cultural Center is becoming a nice tradition as both 2013 & 2014 experienced it. This first full day was pure magic! The kids got the chance to surf in waters of Hawaii and then learn so much more about the Polynesian culture! (www.polynesia.com) December 4th Everyone seemed well rested at breakfast. They were excited to be here and ready for what the day had in store. By 9:00 am everyone again prepared their lunch and a change of clothes for the excitement ahead. We still make time for them to breakout their books and worked on homework for a couple hours. After all education and keeping up in school is a must. The youth did miss a week of school so we wanted them to know their studies were important. At 1pm we went hiking in Waimea Valley Park to the breathtaking waterfall. The short hike provide an amazing array of tropical flowers, native huts, and of course the stunning waterfall, which the youth enjoyed swimming in and sitting under the falls. After the hike, we watched the open ceremonies of “The Eddie!” the youth had previously watched the documentary that ESPN had made “30 for 30: The Legend of Eddie Aikau.” This allowed all of us to be connected and in tune with the spirit of this ceremony. Afterwards, we enjoyed a dinner with family and friends of the Aikau family. There were surfers from around the world. It’s an amazing experience that we would highly recommend you too, to experience, as the family will host anyone who wants to attend (some serious Aloha!) . December 5th Its December 5th and I hear our alarm clock go off. Everyone is ready to go by 8:30 am, we have breakfast (Camp Homelani has some

morning preparing everything for the kids they were serving. One of kids, Xavier (from our group), even got hired by a film crew hand to help out for two hours. Afterwards it was powerful to hear the youth discussing the impact we had by helping out that foundation. Serving the youth with CF gave our youth a sense of worth. We enjoyed another delicious dinner at Camp Homelani and got ready for our last full day on the island! December 8th Being our last full day we had yet another early rise. 7:30am breakfast and then we packed our lunches for the day. We went to Hanauma Bay for a day of sun, fun, and snorkeling. Snorkeling is a tranquil experience in Hanauma bay. Most of the youth had never been snorkeling. It was such a joy to see them enjoy the tropical life underwater.
So, we had an amazing time swimming with beautiful galapagos sharks about 3 miles off the North Shore of Oahu. To see the joy as each person came up for air out of the water, made the months and months of planning SO WORTH IT! After the tour, the Hans Hedemann Surf School at Turtle Bay offered to take our group out for more surf lessons. It was such a great group of instructors that helped us. Bobby really did a great job of making everyone feel welcomed and safe in the water. So, swimming with sharks and surfing at Turtle Bay- Another amazing day on Oahu! (www.hhsurf.com) December 6th We had to do breakfast a little early than usual this morning at 7:30am to prepare for the drive over to the West side of Oahu. Today we would be hanging with one of our favorite people, and Oahu’s well admired person, Uncle George! Uncle George has an amazing & inspiring story about being confronted a few years ago with high blood pressure and obesity. He knew he had to make some change in his lifestyle. He then shared with our group how God lead him to paddle boarding and then the call to share paddleboarding with everyone, which he now does through his program Bay of Dreams (always free of charge). Talk about paying it forward. Uncle George has served more than 6,000 people. He really found his passion in life which is always inspiring to share with people. We spent the entire day with Uncle George and Surf Nation surfing. Other foster youth from the island were invited and we enjoyed a full day of food and fun on and in the water together. (www.facebook.com/bayofdreams) & (www.surfingthenations.com) December 7th Today we had to rise early again for breakfast at 7:30am. We strongly feel that serving others and giving back is part of our identity. So, we made plans to assist and volunteer at the Mauli Ola Foundation Surf Experience Day for children with cystic fibrosis. We spent all
After snorkeling, most of the group went on an outrigger canoe trip with Hawaiian Surf Adventures. The outrigger was lead by a local Hawaiian teacher, Nobie. Nobie spent the better part of almost 3 hours sharing his love for Hawaiian culture and the Aloha spirit. We could feel his passion in explaining the way the islands were formed, the migration of the Polynesian culture and the meanings of many Hawaiian “myths”, making the entire trip to Hawaii worth it. If you were to experience any one part of our trip, we would highly recommend you take this tour. At this point the sun was setting and we made our way over to Waikiki to soak in the Hawaiian culture and night beauty to have our last dinner together at the famous Duke’s restaurant, which is directly on the water. Just about everyone slept on our way back to camp, dreaming about all that we had experienced. (www.hawaiiansurfadventures.com) December 9th We made it to our last day! We enjoyed a late breakfast(we needed it!). Before the actual trip we asked the kids to create a mission statement during this trip. We used the time after breakfast to share our mission statements and share thoughts. The power of all of these incredible experiences, the new family we formed, and the love we all genuinely shared for one another came out as each one of them shared their statement. We all shared from the heart and the impact was phenomenal and definitely life changing. We told the youth this- This trip can never be taken from you, you’ll always have these memories. We closed with expressing that each one of them deserved this.We can’t wait to see what happens in each of their lives. After one week in Hawaii our 2014 group found out what the “Aloha Spirit” is.Together, we will always be “Dreaming of Aloha.”
BAY OF DREAMS

Lead by George Kalilikane, his mission statements reads like this: “I bless people with free SUP lesson. All you need to do is ask.” Uncle George can I get a lesson please? GOTTA LOVE IT! Thats what he does and it’s pretty inspiring! If ever on the island of Oahu, make sure you reach out to him. He can be reached at facebook.com/bayofdreams

MY UNFORGETTABLE, AMAZING TRIP
HAWAII BY STAR PALMERIN, A YOUTH WHO WENT ON THE TRIP
hat kid doesn’t dream about going to Hawaii? I know I sure did, and I never thought that I would ever even get the opportunity to go, until I heard about Urban Surf 4 Kids. My experience really started about a year before I actually went. I went to many Urban Surf 4 Kids volunteer events. It was at those events that I actually learned how to paddleboard, surf, give back to the community, etc. I felt like the trip couldn’t come any sooner.
W
There were many firsts for me during this whole trip. The first one being that I had never rode on an airplane before, and boy was I scared. The rest of my firsts ranged from standing up for the first time while catching a wave in Hawaii, snorkeling, eating incredible shaved ice, meeting pro surfers, and volunteering for children suffering with Cystic Fibrosis; these were just a few of my firsts. This trip meant the world to me. Never did I think that I would be able to experience such a thing. This trip opened doors for my wanting to travel the world. It meant forgetting about everything back home and focusing on having the best time of my life. My overall experience was amazing. As soon as I stepped off the plane, I felt like I was in a completely different world; when in reality, home was about a 5 and a half hour plane ride away. I automatically felt the Aloha spirit and culture. The North Shore is the best! I met a ton of new people; I even built many friendships from the trip. My experience consisted of many shared laughs, fun car rides, surfing, paddleboarding, outrigger riding, shark cage swimming, turtle encounters, the Polynesian Cultural Center, swimming in clear waters, surf competitions, walking around Waikiki, serving in a service event, hiking through beautiful scenery, and many other activities. There’s simply too much to write. I really felt a bond with some of the people on the trip, especially when having our last big group discussion describing our mission statement. By the end of the trip, I didn’t want to leave. It’s crazy how much you get to know people in just one week. It’s crazy to experience so many things in just one week. This trip was truly amazing and unforgettable. Take me back!

SURF SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT by Wesley Stewart
When you think of Hawaii, it’s hard not to think about surfing! Buttons Surf School, our featured school for January, is located on the famed North Shore of Oahu. It offers safe, fun and flexible surf lessons for all skill and fitness levels. The founder, Buttons Kaluhiokalani, is widely considered a surf legend—a Hawaiian surfer whose energy and radical maneuvers in the ‘70s made him an innovator of modern day surfing. He tragically passed away on November 2, 2013, due to complications from lung cancer. He was 55 years old. Buttons, who was known for his gentle Aloha Spirit, generously
gave his time and expertise to several organizations that promote surfing, including Access Surf and the Mauli Ola Foundation. Today, the school is run by his wife Hiriata Hart. Through her, the legacy of Buttons lives on through the sharing of the joy of surfing! Buttons Surf School is a true ambassador of Aloha.
