FOUNDER’S NOTES Aloha, It’s May! I’m as excited as ever for this month’s edition. Last month, our featured story of Jafar Alam and his humble beginning of surfing in Bangladesh quickly became one of our most read stories of all time (over 100K views!). We follow that up with someone who instantly became treasured to myself and our program—John Haffey. This San Diego native soulful surfer is truly one of the most genuine and humble humans I know. However, there is a quality about him that stands out above the rest. John has a childlike heart, and to be quite honest, I highly admire that about him. He is a permanent fixture at all of our events; the kids naturally gravitate to him with his long beard, dreads, and beaming smile (very hard to miss!). Speaking of events, we just wrapped up our first surf camp of the season at La Jolla Shores in San Diego. It was one of our biggest turnouts ever! Over 70 foster youth and close to 100 volunteers showed up ready to serve. This event was a powerful example of what happens when different segments of the population come together with one purpose—to STOKE OUT THE KIDS! We enjoyed a fabulous day of great weather, some great Paella (thanks Don & Doris Flor), incredible people, and some pretty awesome kids who enjoyed some perfect waves! Make sure to check out the photos and event snapshot on page 10. In this edition, we have also posted a page of our upcoming events on page 31. We value the chance to empower our kids and volunteers and look forward to an amazing summer season. Our long term goal is to offer our services to any foster youth who desires them. Together, we can march on to this faithful goal! I look forward to seeing you in the water soon! Mahalo, Wesley Stewart Founder | Urban Surf 4 Kids

JOHN HAFFEY
ohn Haffey has no computer, no cell phone and no technological devices. Well, while he may not have the latest technology, luckily he does have an answering machine for his telephone. About a year ago, Aaron Goulding, a friend and photographer from La Jolla, left Haffey an important message. “It was like ‘yes, yes, yes!’ from the moment I played it”, he says. Haffey listened to the message a few times and then called his friend excitedly. The message was simple— an invitation to volunteer at an upcoming surf camp for foster youth, with a group called Urban Surf 4 Kids. It was the kind of message that Haffey says you couldn’t say no to. And indeed, Haffey wholeheartedly said yes. “You know we all have our daily routines, we are living out of our own box, and everyday we’ve got stuff going on. But for me, [the day of a volunteer event], no matter what [I] have going on, it’s like letting everything go and just getting involved. And to inspire the kids through what I’ve been doing my whole life, surfing and skateboarding, and just being a good person— happy, funny, spontaneous, silly and animated.” Haffey is able to put everything aside and simply do good for others; and it’s fulfilling. “I can only imagine the impact that I am leaving on the kids, but the impact the kids are leaving on me is more fulfilling than words can even express. There is so much to say about US4K, the cause; the organization is so righteous and beyond. It’s such a beautiful thing.” One time in particular stands out for Haffey. It was during a camp when he was paired with a kid who was terrified of the water. Haffey says he gave the kid the option of getting in the water or just staying and hanging out on the beach. “I had told this child, ‘if you’re ever ready just give me a thumbs up and we can do it, but no pressure’”, he said. “So we were sitting on the shoreline, just talking, having a good time, and watching everybody else interact. All of his friends were out in the water learning how to surf. And through our conversation and just hanging out on the beach, I’d say probably
6
20 or 30 minutes into it, the kid looked at me and gave me a thumbs up and said ‘I’m ready’, and I said ‘wow, are you sure, because there is no pressure, I mean this is a day at the beach.’ And the kid said ‘yeah I’m ready!’ “So I got him into the water. And he was still really terrified but he went into it 100%. I could tell. You could still see the fear in the kid’s eyes, but once I got him out there and I pushed him off on his first wave, he was ecstatic. And just seeing his face when he came back out, that was more fulfilling to me than anything I’ve ever experienced before in my life. That smile, ear to ear, on this child’s face, was just priceless. “From that point on, I probably pushed this child off into 10 or 12 waves and then he had had enough. But he got himself out there and I was so stoked to be the volunteer, the individual that took him out. [On one hand] I was honored, and on the other hand it was a totally crucial moment—his first time in the water, facing his fear of the water; I’ve been in the water surfing 45 years, so I’m very comfortable. But it was a beautiful moment, for both of us—for me to be there for this child on his first time in the water and his first time on a surfboard.” Haffey is no doubt very comfortable in the water. He started surfing in 1970 when he was 6 years old, and he clearly remembers how it happened. “My dad had had me on the beach and in the water at a real young age, so I had already been in the ocean and I was riding waves, just not surfing. I was bellyboarding, body surfing and just swimming. And then my parents sent me to Imperial Beach Surf Camp. “And when they sent me to surf camp I was just crying my eyes out. I thought ‘wow, why are they sending me away?!’ I just couldn’t understand … But then, once I got into the camp, it was a huge turning point for me in my life, I mean even at that young age. Once I got on a surfboard, that was it! I knew, from the first time that I got on the board and paddled into my first wave, that this was going to be for life. I could just feel it … it just grabbed me. There’s nothing like it.” Haffey really did love it so much that he was terrified to go home. “When I had to leave the camp, I was actually crying … after initially
7
crying because I had to go there! ... So here I’m talking about 1970 and now its 2015 and I’m still doing it!” Surfing is, for Haffey, a lifestyle. “It’s all about being very fluent, having style and just giving thanks for every moment, every wave, every experience you have in the water and just taking it all in. To me it’s an ultimate gift” he says. Just this spring, Haffey—fluid surf style and all—had an opportunity to travel across the Pacific and surf the ‘land down under’. Wetsuit sponsor, Matuse, sent Haffey and his good friend, surfing extraordinaire Joel Tudor, to Australia. “It was a life changing, super amazing journey”, Haffey says. “We started out in Queensland, the sunshine coast at Noosa Heads. It was my first time ever in Australia. It was the furthest I’ve ever been away from home.To me, it’s something that even if I never went again, I’ll never forget … from the ocean to the land, to the waves … I rode some of the best waves of my life. And not only the best, but the longest rides of my life, and in 78 and 80 degree water. It’s really beautiful—whales, dolphins, manta rays and sea turtles … “And the Australian people were some of the nicest people that I’ve ever met in my whole life. They were just so kind, caring, open, and just beautiful beings. They are more laid back than we are, as Californians, and that really blew my mind.” It’s hard to get one specific story from Haffey about why it was such a great trip. Everything together created his experience. “I mean, I can break it down probably into one special deal”, he tried, “but at the same time I can’t. Because every step I took, every person I talked to, every wave I rode, every plate of food that I finished and enjoyed, was amazing. Look, I just tried to cover everything from food to water to people ... I’m not kidding, all of it. It was the most beautiful journey I’ve ever had and I recommend it to anyone and everyone.” Traveling away from your home, whether it’s a brief road trip just a few miles out of town or across the ocean like Haffey, can bring experiences that enliven your spirit and encourage your appreciation of life.
8
APRIL 2015
But traveling can also bring encounters with snakes! Well, when traveling around Australia that is. “The first time I saw one there”, Haffey says, “was in this town called Suffolk. I saw a 13 to14 foot python crossing the road! It was an albino, yellow and white patch python and I wanted to alert the whole neighborhood! I wanted to knock on everybody’s door and say ‘Hey you’ve got a python in your neighborhood!’ But then I realized that this is not uncommon, that the Australians are living with this daily. They have been living with and amongst this wildlife their whole lives.” And with this awe, comes Haffey’s deep appreciation of wildlife and the desire to set those in captivity free. But that my friend is another story. So what does the future hold for Haffey? “Being with family first and foremost, that’s the gift. That’s what is most important for me, you know, my mom, brothers, sisters and cousins, everybody within the Haffey family, and all my friends and all people in the world in general that I give much love and respect to”, he says. “And with my surfing? I pray to continue to surf as long as I can. It keeps me grounded. It’s my foundation, keeps me centered and is the most righteous release.” So Haffey will continue to surf and I’m pretty sure we will also continue to see Haffey inspire the youth at future US4K events. So what does he want the kids to know? “That you are the future and anything that you want to do in life you can do. We just have to put our mindset towards it and we can achieve it, anything in life. Don’t let anything hold you back” he emphasizes. “All the way from A to Z—surfing, where you want to work, what you want to do in life, who you want to hang out with, what you want to drive, where you want to go to school. “But be the best person that you can be, and give that respect out to other people; treat other people as you would like to be treated yourself. Life is a beautiful, beautiful road. And there is so much out there for you kids.” Well put. Haffey is right, and US4K couldn’t agree more.

T
he surfing culture of yesterday is gone; but up to this day, the sport of surfing has always been appealing to kids of all ages. In the crazy world of children’s sports, sometimes the children do not get to pick the sport that they participate in; it is chosen by their parents. But some children are born to do certain sports and there is nothing anyone can say or do to stop what some may consider to be destiny. Lenincoln “Lenny” Ferguson is a child destined to become a great surfer, and not because his parents pushed him into the sport, but because Lenincoln chose the sport himself. At two years old, Lenny’s parents (Greg and Ciera) introduced Lenny to skate boarding and surfing, among other sports; it was obvious from the start that Lenny was a natural at skate boarding and surfing. Lenny made it very clear, at an early age, that he wanted to focus all of his free time on surfing. Now, at the age of 6, Lenny Ferguson is tearing up the waves wherever he goes, and his surfing is progressing by the day. Lenny’s love for surfing is also progressing as he is not only free surfing but he is now competing in contests. Lenny has competed in the State Beach Local’s contest and the Soul Surfer Series, where he ranks #1 in his age group. Next year, Lenny will start surfing in the Western Surfing Association series of contests,
16
and he is looking forward to the opportunity to show everyone just what he is capable of doing on a bigger stage.Lenny is logging serious water time at some of southern California’s elite break’s, such as Lower Trestles, which is one of Lenny’s favorite breaks; but Lenny recently got to paddle out at Swami’s, and he got it on a great day. Keep in mind that Lenincoln Ferguson only weighs 50 pounds when soaking wet, so a day at Swami’s 3-4 foot with great conditions was well over head for him. But the recipe of 3-4 foot Swami’s plus Lenincoln Ferguson equaled complete stoke and success for another level up in Lenny’s progression. Lenny charged the surf like a warrior and proceeded to attack Swami’s, working the face of the waves with some carving turns; and with every carve and every turn, Lenincoln Ferguson is living his dream. Lenny’s dad, Greg, told me that Lenny was so happy on that day that he was heard singing songs after each wave, while paddling back out to the lineup. This can only be described as pure stoke and joy for surfing; but this stoke cannot be taught—this is a stoke that one is destined for when he is living out his dreams. At 6 years old Lenincoln Ferguson is doing just that. Carlsbad is the hometown of professional surfer’s like Taylor Knox, Scott
Chandler, and Joey Buran; it is also the hometown of Lenincoln Ferguson. Lenny’s front yard is literally a stone throw from Tamarack beach, which is Lenny’s home break and he owns it like a boss. At the age of 6, Lenny is not only showing a great work ethic and determination, he is also setting a great example for his little brother, Merrick, who looks up to his big brother and is following in his footsteps. Lenincoln Ferguson has a great support system in his family; he also has a huge appetite and a great love for the sport of surfing. There have been good surfers who are destined to become great; surfers like Joey Buran and Taylor Knox, surfers that surfed the same breaks that Lenincoln is surfing now, surfers that walked the same paths with the same determination to surf as Lenny Ferguson, from the very same hometown as Lenincoln Ferguson. Whether or not Lenincoln Ferguson becomes a professional surfer is not the point. The fact that Lenincoln Ferguson is destined to become a great surfer through sheer determination and a love for the sport is like a coming storm; there is nothing you can do about the coming storm except sit back and watch it unfold. We should all enjoy sitting back and watching Lenincoln Ferguson develop into a great surfer. 17

The Journey Continues
G
oing on vacation throughout my life I have been to some amazing places. I wanted the salty breeze to run across my sun baked skin and let the sound of great walls of water crashing onto the sand interrupting my dreams. I wanted to open my eyes and look up from my hammock to see the palm trees swaying back and forth dancing in the wind. This moment was my moment and I wanted it to last forever. Everyone can dream right? Well this dream has come true with some of the greatest life lessons of all time. Since I have started my trip of sailing around the world, I have learned some of the most basic things that I have overlooked my entire life. Life is truly a blessing and when you take everything away that
28
www.morehandsondeckhq.com may fog your true visions and passions, the horizon becomes clear. You actually start to embrace your surroundings and your senses become more keen. Flowers are more fragrant, colors are more vibrant, different cultures become more beautiful and your life blossoms into the bright red beautiful rose it should be. Yes roses do have thorns as “Bret Micheal’s from Poison” would sing. I must say though, why would you buy the love of your life a dozen of natures beautiful creations if they are covered with thorns? Sometimes people seem to focus too much on life’s “thorns” and not the true beauty it has to offer. As I’m still young in my life’s journey of adventuring around the world. I have learned some important
MAY 2015 lessons that I will take with me for the rest of my life. I have learned to slow down and be patient. Great things come with time and dedication, they don’t happen overnight. With that said, I have learned to keep it simple and accomplish one thing a day. It may not sound like a lot but if you complete all of your daily tasks and then one more thing on top of that you will then slowly be getting ahead. Especially with a boat. You may or may not know that things take forever to fix on a boat. With all the dingy trips into town and all ten stores you check may not have exactly what you need. Then after some taco’s and an ice cold coke, you head back out to the boat to find out the part just barely doesn’t fit. Do that a million times and it gets a little frustrating but its amazing what experiences you have and what you learn in these types of situations. I’ll be honest, I have been one to always look for whats next and where I want to be in the future. I had a hard time being present. By learning to just sit back and relax I am amazed on what I have noticed. I feel like people spend to much time talking at people and not listening to the world around them. Embracing my surroundings is something that I have come to really appreciate. You never know what you may learn about the world and you might make a new friend that you originally wouldn’t have if you were in a rush for no particular reason. What would life be without a challenge? I am taking this journey or expedition, my family might say a long vacation, one step at a time. I have realized that the dream of waking up on the beach every day in “paradise” is not the entire dream, thats just part of the experience. Would you be able to go to that fancy resort you have always dreamed about in French Polynesia and lay on the beach for the rest of your life? I couldn’t. Don’t get me wrong once in a while I enjoy just relaxing but if it was my only option, it would drive me crazy! I need a challenge, stimulation that is above and beyond regular life. I have spent my entire time on this earth so far rushing for something I was trying to catch when in reality, paradise was right beneath my feet. So as I get myself into crazy situations, it may seem like chaos at the time but I live for these experiences and later reflect on how they have molded me into the person that I am today. I am learning everyday how amazing life can be if you choose to let it.
Let your dreams come true -Tyler

Sayulita, Mexico
O
ne of the most popular surfing places in Mexico is the small village Sayulita located near Puerto Vallarta. The wilderness, jungle, beaches and ecosystem are just a small piece of the natural beauty you will find while visiting here. Apart from the natural beauty you can visit the local restaurants and bars and enjoy a drink on the beach and relax. Surfing is not the only activity you can do while visiting Sayulita. In the past few years this village is a famous destination for newlyweds looking for a different kind of wedding and after that continuing with their honeymoon. The beach offers the excellent conditions for all surf levels from first time surfers to professionals. Although the beach provides surfing conditions throughout the entire year the best period to surf here is from December to early April. In this period you can get higher waves and longer rides. The right brakes are perfect for beginners and long board surfers, while the speedy left breaks give excellent conditions for rippers and short board surfers. This period of the year is when the humpback whales are in the Sayulita’s bay helping the surfers waiting for the perfect wave. If you spend your day on the beach surfing you can enjoy the evening attending one of the live music venues this place has to offer. Fun,sun, great local food, and warm water! We love it!

Getting to Sayulia is not very difficult. Take the main coast highway (200) from Puerto Vallarta toward Campostela and then take the turnoff to the right at Sayulita to get to the beach.
Several direct flights into Puerto Vallarta airport from Southern California and our personal favorite Volaris direct from Tijuana (we have flown round trip for under $125 total!).
Just as you would expect, the weather conditions here are perfect at Sayulita. The highest temperature is in July ranging from low 80’s to mid 90’s and the lowest is in March ranging from low 70’s to low 80’s (ahhh perfect!). The water temperature may vary a few degrees but that would not be a problem as it will be excellent for surfers. Bigger temperature difference happens mostly after heavy rains or when the offshore winds are stronger. That is when the deeper cooler water replaces the surface water that has been warmed. Aside from the warm weather it is suggested that you wear 2 mm neoprene top or a shorty in the morning and the evening because it is known to be windy.
You don’t have the need to carry your surfing or any kind of gear. At Sayulita’s shops you can find long and short board for the kind of surfing that you want. Renting a long board is perfect if you are an amateur and if you want to catch more waves. Beginners can also take surfing lessons that usually last 90 minutes using a rental board and a rash vest in order to master the art of surfing.
