NOVEMBER 2014 According to Vallas, “We have dramatically transformed Swell, with beautifully appointed new furnishings featuring historic beach area photos embedded in our table tops, a dramatic large living planted wall, all highlighted by an amazingly innovative new menu. Swell has such a wonderful environment now… customer feedback has been terrific; it’s exactly what I was hoping to achieve!” Business continues to “swell” for Vallas, and with it, a perfect new partnership he established recently with highly successful restaurant and hospitality entrepreneur, Gina Champion-Cain. Her The Patio Restaurants, Luv Surf Vacation Rentals, Luv Surf Retail, and The Front Porch Retail Brands, are all soaring. The two upgraded Swell, while focusing heavily on the rapid expansion of Swell Coffee Brand, a major new business enterprise for them. The two have taken the small café and created a dramatic miracle. Champion-Cain said: “John is young, dynamic and highly energetic and has such great ideas! Just look at what we’ve accom-

Few could envision such a stunning turnaround. In just three short years, owner and operator John Vallas, has positioned his Swell Café in Mission Beach, as the hottest new dining establishment that’s the talk of the town. For both breakfast and lunch, celebrities and locals alike are joining the consistent crowd lining up for a Swell Cup and a special dish. By sourcing the world’s most outstanding coffee beans and establishing connections up and down the entire coffee production chain, Swell Coffee Roasting Company is setting a new standard for boutique coffee companies. From seed, to farmer, to processing, to the challenge of exporting and importing to the US market and roasting coffee for other restaurants, hotels, large employers, et al., Swell Coffee is bringing their passion for specialty coffee to the ever more discriminating palates of San Diego and beyond.

The now upscale social and dining experience is a culinary treat that focuses on the rich history of this beach oriented Region. Honoring the San Diego lifeguards, has brought in a local following and ambience that the entire Mission Beach community has eagerly embraced. Historic lifeguard photos now beautifully adorn all table tops and a plaque dedicated to the annual Lifeguard of the Year hangs on the outside wall at the Swell Café entrance. Beginning last month, Swell Café began what will become an annual tradition of making deserving public announcements honoring recipients of the Lifeguard of the Year award.

NOVEMBER 2014

BY ALBERTO HERNANDEZ

“Today I want to introduce to you someone that I have called the G.O.A.T.” Urban Surf 4 Kids founder, Wesley Stewart emphatically suggested. Many looked at each other with bewilderment and puzzlement. What kind of an introduction was this? Why would he introduce the key note speaker at Paddle Fest? (Paddle Fest is a completive paddle board event to raise money for “Dreaming of Aloha”, an achievement program that takes foster youth who reside in San Diego to the beautiful Island of Hawaii) Thankfully,Wesley continued his introduction by elaborating on his declaration. “Tom Jones is in my opinion, and many

ing affect his attitude or his life. This hit home for me as I too grew up in an orphanage, and I could relate to the very hard life, from the inside out, that an orphan, foster youth, or parentless youth, endures. To witness someone who went through many similar things that I endured, and many foster youth at the event endured, was inspirational and intriguing. I decided to check out some of Tom’s achievements and then I asked him a few questions so that I could write this article about him, and perhaps, persuade you to believe what my friend Wesley believes, what many in the endurance industry believes, and after

THE GREATEST ATHLETE OF ALL TIME WHOM YOU NEVER KNEW others who know his many accolades opinions, the Greatest Athlete of All Time whom you never knew.” I thought that this proclamation by a person who I know and trust was very interesting. I have been writing for Urban Surf 4 Kids the magazine for a year now, and I have met and written about some of the more interesting people on this planet. I never had the opportunity to write about the greatest athlete of all time so I was excited, and very interested in speaking with Tom Jones. I listened intently to his speech at Paddle Fest, in which he describe some of his endurance achievements. What truly drew me to want to interview this very interesting man was the fact that he grew up in an orphanage, and did not allow his upbring-

many hours of research and the opportunity to speak to the man, what I now believe.Tom Jones is truly,The G.O.A.T. whom you never knew. Here are a few of the multiple endurance achievements Tom Jones has had the opportunity to triumph in his life. He won the North American kickboxing title as the oldest competitor in the sport. Tom ran a sub-4 hour marathon and then won a sanctioned kickboxing match on the same day (this is an unmatched feat). He set a world record for of 121 consecutive daily marathon runs from California to New York to benefit abused youth. He is a two time Muy

Thai World Champion, and a three time United States Champion. Incredibly, Tom stand up paddled from Key West to New York City, which is an astounding 1507 miles in 92 consecutive days. He also stand up paddled the length of California from Oregon to Mexico, or 1,250 miles in 90 consecutive days (a still standing unbeaten record). These are incredible athletic feats that are respected and bring awe to those who hear about his amazing achievements. In my opinion, the greatest achievement that Tom overcame was his grit to overcome the obstacles that were set in his path as a young child. He overcame all odds, and is now an inspiration to the masses. As stated earlier, Tom grew up in an orphanage in Covina, California, due to his parent’s abuse and neglect. I asked Tom how exactly was he able to get out of that predicament, and become the inspiring athlete that he is now. His answer was straight to the point, “It was all about attitude! I did not allow my circumstance to dictate my attitude, and I preach that to all the at risk kids that I speak to.” Many people do not understand the significance of that statement. Statistics show that many orphans, foster youth, and parentless youth end up homeless, incarcerated, addicted to substances, they are broken and in peril for the duration of their lives. The very important ingredient that separates people

8

like Tom, and unsuccessful parentless youth, is attitude. Tom did not allow his circumstance to affect his positive attitude and his will to succeed. That attitude and that grit is what allows Tom to be this amazing endurance athlete that he is. Amazingly, he is elite in three different endurance sports, something that is unheard of. He decided long ago that he was going to do all he had to do to succeed because he had, and will always have, the attitude that it takes to succeed. I decided to ask Tom what he believed is the most difficult component of being an endurance athlete. I assumed that he would tell me about his rigorous training, or when he is in the middle of the competition, his temptation to quit. His answer showed me the kind of person that Tom is. “By far, the biggest obstacle that I have to endure as an endurance athlete is the time that I have away from my kids. I have two boys, one eleven and one twelve, and I really struggle having to, at times, spend many days away for them.” Again, this is something that must be commended. Tom was abandoned by his parents. He was given a terrible example of parenting by the people who should have showed him how to be a great father. He is a great father despite the obstacles, and that is truly inspirational. Another great feat that Tom Jones will conquer is his upcoming standup paddle from San Francisco, California to Oahu, Hawaii.

NOVEMBER 2014 For four months, Jones will risk his life and push his body to extreme limits. This incredible journey of 2351 miles across the Pacific Ocean has taken years of planning and training. Tom is doing this incredible feat to bring awareness to environmental responsibility. Besides that, and if that is not enough, Tom is working on a reality television show that will focus on his endurance athletic ability.

vest it in others, especially those who need it the most. Another truth that Tom believes in is he practices what he preaches. He does not simply give advice about having a great attitude despite a person’s disposition, he actually practices his own advice. He does not unpretentiously tell people to be great parents, he is a great parent. Tom does not only give advice about following one’s dreams and going after the desires of life despite hardships, he lives it.

BY FAR, THE BIGGEST OBSTACLE THAT I HAVE TO ENDURE AS AN ENDURANCE ATHLETE IS THE TIME THAT I HAVE AWAY FROM MY KIDS.

One of the main questions that I ask people that I interview is, are there any words of wisdom you want our readers to know? Tom shared two very important truths, “I believe in the saying, when much is given, much is expected. I have been blessed with a lot of great athletic talent and many great opportunities. This is why I give back to organizations like Urban Surf 4 Kids, because I feel that I have a responsibility to share my story, my heart, and my talents, with the people that need it most, the underprivileged youth.” What a wonderful heart to take what he has been given and give back to people who need it the most. I can relate to this kind of thinking, and I believe that this is the essential ingredient to success. To be successful we all should follow the example of Tom Jones. We should all take what we have been given and in-

The G.O.A.T, the greatest of all time is a title that we can all agree, Tom Jones subjectively can be in the argument. After hours of research and the opportunity to speak to the man, I have come to an opinion about this title. I do believe that Tom Jones is the greatest athlete that many have never heard of. I do believe that he is in the discussion of G.O.A.T.Yet, in my humble opinion, he is not only the G.O.A.T. when pertaining to extreme endurance sports, he is one of the G.O.A.T.s as a man, a father, a humanitarian, and an inspiration to many in this world. Tom Jones is one of the greatest people of all time that you may never have met!

10 Things

every beginner surfer should know

Learning to surf? We’ve all been there, and as the saying goes, ‘If I knew back then what I know now, life would have been much easier.’ In hindsight, many beginner surfers burden themselves with an unnecessarily tough learning curve by jumping into the sport too quickly, and ig-

12

noring the basics. However, if you are willing to take some advice, you’re sure to catch the wave of your life and the bug we call ‘stoke’. In order to speed up the learning curve, here are “10 Things Every Beginner Surfer Should Know”:

1

Respect The Ocean

No, we don’t mean awareness of its existence or even just knowing how to swim, I mean having confidence in reading its conditions, where to sit, how waves break, currents, channels, storms, pollution, hazards and predators. It is a dynamic environment with countless variables. If you are new to the ocean, we advise taking it slow. Enjoy some time swimming and playing around in the surf, and just try to familiarize yourself with the power of the ocean before jumping into the sport too quickly.

2Etiquette

Believe it or not, manners exist in the lineup too. Etiquette teaches you how to interact with other surfers you encounter and covers everything from where to paddle out to right-ofway. It's part safety and part respectfulness. Knowing how to behave will not only keep you from looking like a fool or a jerk, but possibly save you from hostility. Surfers take etiquette very seriously, and so should you.

3Equipment

So now that you're comfortable in the water and you've become familiar with the rules, it's time to think about what equipment you need. But my god, WHERE TO BEGIN? A lot of money can be wasted on buying the wrong wetsuits, surfboards, and fins that don't fit you. The best advice I can offer is keep it basic. Despite what pop culture says, large flat boards are fun and a great place to begin. Buy used boards and equipment until you begin to understand how the dimensions of your board effect the way you surf, then buy your own custom design later down the road.

4

Paddling Correctly

This is straightforward. Keep the board flat on the surface, tuck in your feet from dragging, extend your chest into your board and don't stop. There are many techniques to improve your form, but the main principles are to

reduce drag and maximize your planing surface and range of motion.

5Channels

Being able to identify a channel is an important part of surfing and understanding the ocean. A channel is usually a location outside the surfing area that can act as a safe zone for surfers to paddle out or rest between sets. It's usually located in an area with deeper water near the perimeter of a break. Sometimes they form near the edge of a reef or a trench in a sandbar. Being able to identify the channel can save your life when you've spent every ounce of energy.

6

Currents

Energy is a precious resource for surfers. A good surfer is not just talented, but also efficient when it comes to spending his or her energy. Currents come in many flavors and can either be an asset or the biggest pain in your *ss. Using currents to assist you in paddling out can save you precious energy. If you find yourself half way down the beach within 10 minutes of your session, be more aware of your starting point and which direction the water is flowing. Oh, and don't try paddling back, just get out and walk.

Diving/ 7Duck Turtle Rolling

Duck diving or turtle rolling (for larger boards with too much foam to duck-

dive) are important maneuvers in order to dodge an unavoidable wave from cleaning you up when paddling out. As a wave approaches, the surfer pushes the nose of the surfboard under the approaching wave, then pulls the board back up out the back of the wave (a knee or foot can put pressure of the tail of the board as well). The idea is to use the energy of the wave to pull you out the back. By going under the lip of a wave, you can avoid being blasted up and down the beach like a rag doll. If it's hard to get down at first, don't worry. You will get plenty of chances to practice duck diving.

8

Proper Crashing

Falling is an every day experience in surfing. It's gonna happen. Your instincts are going to tell you to panic and thrash but the key to a safe fall is to try and stay relaxed. It's important that you try to hold onto your board because, more often than not, it's the biggest hazard to you and everyone's safety. If you can't hold onto your board, cover your head with your arms to avoid getting knocked in the head. A lot of surfers learn to not just tolerate heavy falls, but actually enjoy the experience. If you aren't interested in being thrashed around, maybe you're in the wrong sport. Practicing yoga or other breathing exercises can help you stay calm and learn

to use your breath wisely. If you stay calm in a sketchy situation, it will help you survive (that pretty much goes for anything in life). Use your breath wisely.

9

Swell Forecasting

Reading swell charts is definitely a skill worth knowing. You don't have to be as knowledgeable as a meteorologist to benefit from forecast data. Even just learning the jargon will help you not only reduce wasted time, but also calculate the risks. Ask yourself, do you know the difference between 6ft @8sec swell vs 6ft @18sec swell? Knowing the difference might save you gas, time and injuries.

10

Logging Sessions

While on the subject of reading swell charts, a useful tool for any surfer is logging all the variables of your sessions. This includes tides, swells, winds, rains, and every other variable you can think of. You could argue that a good portion of surfing well is knowing when a spot is going to be at its best. Dialing in on a spot shows in the surfer and follows the whole idea of generating more and better opportunities for quality waves. Surf smarter, not harder.

Joshua Drake: I have been surfing since July of 2013. Some of my favorite surf breaks are Terra-Mar, Malibu, Uppers, and Cardiff. US4K the Magazine: So do you have any sponsors at this time? Joshua Drake: Actually I do. I am sponsored by Carrozza, Reezen Eyewear, and Reef Warm Water Surf Shop. US4K the Magazine: Wonderful, and here is the magic question, how do you give back to your community? Joshua Drake: I try to give back by being positive to all the mini groms. I think being positive in this way, by cheering them on, helps them when they are in the water. I also believe that it is my responsibility to take care of the beach, and so I focus on picking up trash on the beach so as to keep our beach clean. US4K the Magazine: What are some of your goals? Joshua Drake: I want to keep on surfing! I want to get so good that I one day I will be able to surf waves around the world. I also want to continue to get good grades, stay positive and have lots and lots of fun.

Dreaming

of Aloha Update By Alberto Hernandez

It is about that time of year when the Urban Surf 4 Kids family is excited to present the Dreaming of Aloha trip for foster youth. This year we are proud to be able to take a number of foster youth on a vacation of a lifetime. Urban Surf 4 Kids has chosen a number of foster youth based on our achievement program designed to give them an opportunity to earn a trip to Hawaii. The youth were required to fulfill a number of goals and in return were positively reinforced with this momentous vacation of a lifetime.

Urban Surf 4 Kids also would like to thank all those who have donated, volunteered, or helped out in any way to make this dream a reality. We look forward to this great time with some amazing youth. Look for our Dreaming of Aloha article in the near future which will feature all the things that went on during our event. Thank you to our sponsors, and from the Urban Surf 4 Kids family and the foster youth that have been given the chance to experience this great vacation of a lifetime, Aloha!

These youth have vigorously met all the requirements for the achievement program and are now weeks away from being able to have an opportunity to experience the stoke, “Ohana Spirit, and beauty of Hawaii. One of our sponsors for the trip, Alaska Airlines, has generously donated a portion of the cost of flying to Hawaii to Urban Surf 4 Kids. The Urban Surf 4 Kids family is grateful for Alaska Airlines generosity towards our kids and for their desire to partner with us for this great cause, to love and serve the most disenfranchised children in our nation. We are truly looking forward to taking our youth on a vacation that in many cases would not have the chance to experience.

INDO Boards CEO talks with Urban Surf 4 Kids Wesley Stewart from Urban Surf 4 Kids catches up with INDO Board founder Hunter Joslin US4K: Hunter- Tell us when & how INDO Board started? I originally designed the Indo Board in 1975 when I placed a skimboard on a wooden roller and the action was insane! I spent the next 23 years learning, through working on several different business ventures, how to successfully bring the Indo Board to market. I started the company in 1998 and haven’t looked back since. What was once one Indo Board is now 8 different models and sales around the world! US4K: Who is using the board? I have worked with athletes, coaches, trainers and therapists from virtually every sport there is. The basic premise of riding the Indo Board is BALANCE, which requires CORE activation along with correct posture and mental focus, all of which are key elements in almost every physical activity known to man. Over the years the list of National and World Champion Title holding athletes that use the Indo Board products has grown to well over 100 from a broad spectrum of sports including Surfing, Wake Boarding, Water Skiing, Kite Boarding, Wake Surfing, Snowboarding, Tennis, Golf, MMA, Jui Jitsu, NASCAR, Indy Car, Wrestling, Frisbee, Field Hockey, Swimming, and many others. Currently several of the WCT surfers use Indo Boards as a part of their training regimes, Taj Burrow, John John Florence, Kolohe Andino, Joel Parkinson and Courtney Conloque. US4K: Share a story about how the board has impacted someone life? Wow, there are so many to chose from because I here amazing stories all the time from stoked parents, as well as athletes, that proclaim the difference the Indo Board has made a noticeable difference in performance levels. I like to tell the story of Justin Quintal who is now known as one of the best longboarders in the world by winning 4 of Joel Tudor’s Van's Duct Tape Invitational events including 2013 and 2014 US Open Titles. I first met Justin when he was 15 years old as an avid competitor

22

in all the East Coast Pro Longboard e v e n t s , of which I was the event announcer. Justin was always in the finals because he had great talent but he had a problem with controlling his board once he got up on the nose for extended nose rides. He had great talent but just wasn’t strong enough to keep it under control. He bought an Indo Pro model from me at the Surf Expo in Florida after I gave him some training tips and promised him if he used the Indo Board every day for at least 20 minutes he would see an improvement in his surfing. Four months later we met at the Ron Jon’s Annual Easter Surf Festival, where he came up to me and proclaimed that his surfing was so much better because now it was just like riding the Indo Board. He proceeded to win the event and I was so stoked as he never fell in any of his heats. There is a great video on Youtube he made featuring him surfing and then doing the same maneuvers on the Indo Board. US4K: These seem like they are great for fitness? What are some benefit? The fitness results are easy to come by when using the Indo Board for at least 20 minutes per day. The immediate result is increased leg strength which is most surfers weakest problem area. Also there is an increase in core engagement because that is the most basic physical requirement in successfully riding the Indo Board. Many people overlook the upper body exercises that can be done using the Indo Board for pushups, planks and pop ups. You can use the Indo Board for fun and learn lots of skate tricks like Ollie's, shuvits, body varials and spins or you can apply it as a serious workout apparatus for sport specific training. US4K: Whats next for INDO Board and where can we buy one? The newest product we have recently made available is the Indo Yoga Board which is the home/studio version of Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga. This Indo Board is for the avid yoga practitioner who wants to be able to do SUP Yoga in their home or at a yoga studio instead of out on the water. Indo Boards are available in many Surf Shops or they can be bought online by going to www.indoboard.com where you can see all the different models and color choices we have available. Thanks!

URBAN SURF 4 KIDS

3

rd ANNUAL

PADDLE-FEST RECAP

As I look back on the Urban Surf 4 Kids 3rd Annual PURA-KAI Paddle-Fest I can’t help but be overwhelmed with pride, honor, and pure stoke at how this event continues to grow and change the lives of everyone involved. This event started as a small event with a big dream, that dream was to help introduce SUP, surfing, and the healing power of the ocean to foster youth that had no access. That dream became a reality for 11 foster youth last year when the “Dreaming of Aloha” program and Urban Surf 4 Kids were able to take the foster youth to Oahu for one leg of the legendary “Triple Crown of Surfing”

28

where the kids got to meet to legendary watermen Laird Hamilton and Kelly Slater. This year the event would reach new heights and exceed our expectations from the previous years. This year the 6 mile men’s distance race was won by a great ambassador of the sport and paddle innovator E. J. Johnson, in the woman’s distance it was Kristin Kaczmarek who would bring home the gold. In the 2 mile short course it was Alan Chalom for the men and Shannon Litten-Brown for the women, I want to congratulate our winners and thank them for competing also invite them back for next year’s event. So many great things were happening all at the same time, we had Ryan Brolier providing great live music, while over 25 people took part in the “Chaka Paddle” they could all hear Ryan Brolier playing while they were paddling on the bay, it was EPIC! In addition to over 60 free children’s SUP lessons going on, the Onit Ability Board crew came down a took Omara Atkins out for her first paddle. The impact of this day was immediate and very powerful to everyone involved from the volunteer’s, to the competitor’s, the sponsor’s, and most of all the foster youth involved in the Urban Surf 4 Kids program. This year $9,000 dollars was raised for the “So-Cali Dreaming and Dreaming of Aloha” programs which will have an incredible impact on the foster youth that earn the right to be involved in the program through giving back to the community in a positive way. Paddle-Fest 2014 was incredibly memorable on many levels for many people and I can’t wait to see how many people this event will impact in the years to come.

Volunteer OF THE MONTH

Sal & Louise Zavala By Alberto Hernandez

A pillar is a large post that holds something up. Pillars are also people that are important members of a specific group. Urban Surf 4 Kids tries to share the lives and love of our most important and dedicated volunteers. We share the stories of people that empower our youth through their lives and their actions. This month, Urban Surf 4 Kids is proud to present a pillar couple who are the backbone of why this organization is so effective and inspiring to the masses. Sal and Louise Zavala have volunteered with Urban Surf 4 Kids since founder, Wesley Stewart, inaugurated it. Sal was with Wesley on the day that Wesley decided that he wanted to start an organization that empowers foster youth. Sal and Louise Zavala have been best friends with Wesley and Deborah Stewart for many years. I have had the privilege of knowing these two wonderful people for many years as well. I know the countless hours and events that this amazing couple has volunteered for with Urban Surf 4 Kids. This couple has devoted their lives, resources, and hearts to many of our youth. Louise Zavala is a Marriage and Family Therapist while Sal is an Insurance broker. Sal is from Northern California, while Louise is from Hawaii. They met while attending the same church, and after a few years of dating, they were married. The couple met Wesley and Deborah at church and instantly became great friends. Sal and Louise began volunteering with the Stewarts during the mid2000. They volunteered with a nonprofit that Wesley and his late father, Jerry, started called, Sidelines Club. The couple volunteered to take sports equipment to Mexico, the Bahamas, and Haiti. After the passing of Jerry Stew-

art, Wesley decided that he wanted to create a program where he could empower at risk youth through water based activities and serving the community. The people that were right there willing and ready to help take on the challenge to share stoke with the youth were Sal and Louise Zavala. This couple has been intricate in many of Urban Surf 4 Kids events. Sal and Louise have volunteered for a plethora of events like Dreaming of Aloha, So Cali Dreaming, Paddle Fest, and many of Urban Surf 4 Kids surf camps. Sal is one of our most important volunteers as he has led many surf camps and allowed for these events to run smooth. Louise is President of Urban Surf 4 Kids board of directors. She, along with her loving husband, has volunteered for a number of US4K events. Without the dedication and serving heart of pillar couples like Sal and Louise, Urban Surf 4 Kids would not be in existence. In many cases, volunteers like Sal and Louise do not get enough credit for the countless hours that they have dedicated to this amazing organization, and to our awesome youth. Every organization has people who stand out among the rest. Sal and Louise Zavala are that couple. There are not enough words in our vocabulary that can describe what this amazing couple means to Urban Surf 4 Kids. We cannot express our gratitude for Sal and Louise enough. Just like pillars that hold some of the most beautiful buildings in place, so this great couple are pillars that hold Urban Surf 4 Kids in balance. Urban Surf 4 Kids is proud to present Sal and Louise Zavala as Urban Surf 4 Kids volunteers of the month for November 2014.

Green is the color of life. Green is a fuel for life. Green is a way of life. Green inside, outside, upside down! After the summer rainy season, the jungle on this stretch of Mexican Pacific is radiantly green and alive. As the Tailwind Jungle Lodge re-opens for another season it’s time to embrace some green inspiration . . . Green life surrounds us in a comforting embrace, a reassurance that we are never alone; there is life all around us. Green empowers us, steadfastly demonstrating the magic and potential of life. Yet, at the same time green teaches us calm and tranquility, a gentle reminder of the need to be present and get slow. Let us revel in the sway of the green palm trees of the jungle, do sun salutations beneath a canopy of green and SUP alongside a glowing green coastline. Green also nourishes us! From kale to seaweed, they are truly one of Mother Nature’s gifts for us to enjoy. Greens spring out of the ground and reach up to the sky, offering a contagious and uplifting, energy. Put these on your plate and this energy will be easily assimilated into your body. The nutritional benefits of greens are endless and the saying “if you’re green inside you’re clean inside” is one of my personal mantras. Greens are beyond doubt one of the cornerstones of good health. Green is a model of sustainable life. Flora projects a silent, harmonious energy that flows gracefully and synergistically through nature’s cycles. Why not emulate this rhythm and harmony in our own lives?

I look forward to sharing this natural paradise with you.

RETURN TO BATTLE OF THE PADDLE 2014 SALT CREEK: A DIFFERENT KIND OF CHALLENGE fter being the only paraplegic to compete and complete the Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle 2013 at Doheny State Beach, I knew I had to return in 2014 and so I began to train right away. If I was to return to the BOP, I wanted to have a board that was more open water capable than the one I used in the previous year. I have learned that the importance of open water independence for me, as an adaptive disabled athlete, is a must. So with the help of my board sponsor, Kings Paddle Sports, and Dave Daum, we started the testing on a new design—a 14ft Elite Model Kings race board. We debuted the board at the 2014 Mickey Munoz Mongoose Cup, where I quickly learned that the board worked on flat water but maneuvering around the buoy’s in a sprint format was something we had not planned for and the board could not function in that format. We therefore took to the next two races, with the first race being an open water race in the spring called the “Kings Paddle Sports Sea Side Slide”. The conditions for this race again proved too much

A

42

for this design, but we gave it one more try on the flat water race at the “Shaka Fest”, and in 22 mile an hour winds I was again unable to complete the race. When the news came about the BOP moving from Doheny State Beach to the world class beach break of Salt Creek, it was at this point that I began to have my doubts about a successful return to the 2014 BOP. This news was a major blow to our plans for a successful return to the BOP; it became about safety first, as Salt Creek is a major beach break with plenty of power for the early fall south swells. However, we first had to make a design that was on another level to complete this task; we were so far from that with our current design. It was at this point, after two incomplete races and staring down the barrel of a possible failure at Salt Creek, that we reached out to our friend Steve Boehne at Infinity Surf Boards. Steve Boehne is the creator of the Infinity Wave-ski, which is a sit down surf board that has proven to be a great vehicle for disabled surfers of all levels. I surf on a Wave-ski and I have written an article on Steve Boehne’s continued contributions to the disabled water sports community entitled “The God Father of Adaptive Surfing, Steve Boehne”. I knew we were not far off with our design, and with Steve’s input and expertise, we still had a chance to get in the game at the 2014 BOP; but time was running out and was running out fast. Of course, in classic Steve Boehne fashion, it only took a few hours for us to fix the flaws and make some minor adjustments to our design. We were basically riding too high off the board and so we lowered our center of gravity and incorporated the knee brace that they were using on the Wave-ski, but I needed the knee brace to be higher and tighter to hold my

BY CHARLES WEBB

legs in place while leaning forward on my stroke. The mastermind behind the knee brace is none other than Mike Johnson, a great paddle designer and former Olympic team paddler. Mike has been designing kayak and canoe paddles for decades and also designed the back rest and knee braces for the adaptive surfers over the last few decades. The problem was that Mike has used the same template for the knee braces and I had to ask him to design a whole new one. Mike was happy to do it and the new knee brace was designed. Mike also cut the foot wells and put the seat on the race board. Mike and I had become good friends from surfing at San-O and from Mike passing on his secrets as a paddle maker to me, but this is for another article. Mike and I spent the next few days getting the height of the seat correct and the knee brace and foot wells installed and within a few weeks we went from a bleak outlook for a return to the BOP to a real shot at creating a new design that would change adaptive paddle boarding forever. With all the design work and fabricating done, all that was left was the research and development stage, which basically meant that I needed to paddle it and work out the kinks. By this time, we were looking at the 2014 BOP being only 4-5 weeks away and I still did not know if this design was open water capable. That was when I met another person that had a great deal to do with my successful return to the BOP. With the new design being lower to the face of the board, it made all of my paddles too long. I called a few SUP shops locally to get my paddles cut down and that was when I came across “Legends SUP”, in Carlsbad CA, and its owner operator, Jeff Warner. I rolled into the shop and, unknown to me, Jeff knew who I was; in addition, Jeff was a former competitive paddler who still occasionally jumps in a race and was friends with all of my sponsors. Jeff and I got to talking and before I knew it, I was training with Jeff and his crew twice a week and he was helping me complete the last stages of open water testing on our new design. Jeff is one of the most unselfish people I have ever met and extended himself to me every week for training. While training with Jeff Warner, we discovered that this design was actually solid, safe, fast, and open water reliable under almost any condition. With the system proving reliable, safe and fast, we decided to debut the new design at the 1st annual Sunday, Sunday, Sunday Race at Bonita Cove in San Diego, just 7 days before the 2014 BOP. I decided to do the 5 mile short course instead of the 10 mile distance race and right from the start, I could tell it was going to be a good race for me. The previous weeks’ training with Jeff Warner really prepared me for the distance of this race; I finished 24th out of 31 people and I noticed that my time for the race was by far the fastest time for a 5 mile paddle I had ever done. This new design proved to me that I could now cover the required distance of the 2014 Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle, but that I

needed a crew of people that were fully capable of getting me on the beach and into the water, while keepingNOVEMBER me safe in the 2014 water, regardless of the conditions. I first looked to a lifelong childhood friend in Augustine Costantino, a consummate waterman I grew up with who now resides in Lahina Hawaii, a small town on Maui. My next choice was the big wave maverick and all around great guy, David Langer, who is a regular at the famous big wave break Nazare’ in Portugal. I met David Langer through the work that he and I do with Urban Surf 4 Kids, and our friendship was immediate. Throughout the past 9 months, David and I have become close friends and have been on a few great surf adventures. I then looked to some other close friends; one was Ric Vaughn, a person I have spent hundreds of hours on the water with on many deep sea fishing adventures. Ric is also an avid surfer and someone I trust with my life. I then looked to Urban Surf 4 Kids founder, Wesley Stewart, and his crew Alberto Hernandez and Sal Zavala; I have done a ton of work with all three of these men and I knew that I would be safe with people that had a plan. My team was then complete and the 2014 Battle of the Paddle was only days away. October 4th 2014, the day of the Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle was here. I awoke that morning and knew that the day would be historic, not only for myself, but for the entire Battle of the Paddle field of athletes. There was a high pressure with a 3-6ft south swell; conditions were epic for this event and one could feel the tension right from the start. After arriving at Salt Creek, and taking some time to look at the surf with my team, we had to take some time with the Chief lifeguard and his team to see exactly how we were going to tackle this. With some input from the lifeguard team, it was time to start preparing for the carnage that was the 7th Annual Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle. As my team and I were discussing our approach, we got great input from former surfing world champion, and great friend, Ian Cairns. Ian took his time to take my water team on the beach and gave his input and knowledge of the break; his input was invaluable to us and our strategy on how we would successfully complete this race in one piece. After all the talking was done, it was time to race. I was very nervous and at one point I felt that I was going to be sick going to the water. This, by far, would be the biggest moment for me, and the adaptive water sports movement, since completing the BOP last year and doing the Dukes Ocean Festival this year on Oahu. Even more so, because of the conditions and the break, safety became a major issue for all involved in the competition; it was at this point that I realized I had made a huge mistake and had forgotten the fin for my wave ski and had to scramble to find a fin that might work. The plan was to paddle out my wave ski through the surf to my race board waiting on the outside of the surf line, switch

43

boards, do the race on my 14ft Kings board and switch back to my wave ski to finish through the surf. I got a smaller SUP fin and popped it in my wave-ski and hoped for the best. It was in the first seconds when I hit the water on my wave ski that I knew the fin was too small, as I had little to no stability from the fin, and I flipped over. I got back on my board with the help of my team and off I went over some heavy beach breaks to the outside where my race board was waiting. As I switched boards, I had to await the field of 14ft racers before I could get started; the 14ft class made it through the surf and then the race was on! As I got started, I could feel that my training from the previous weeks was paying off, as I was right up in the pack for the first lap. I noticed right away that the open class was smaller than last year’s class of 484 competitors. I also noticed that I was not falling off to the end of the field like last year but I was right in the mix of the middle of the field and that was just fine with me. I could feel that the new design that Dave Daum, Steve Boehne and I had come up with was even faster and more open water capable then I had previously thought. This board was kicking some serious butt! Then, it came to the last lap of the race and this was where I nearly ran out of gas, if not for one of my old friends, Ulysses from Riviera Boards; he came up on me and pushed me for the last half lap urging me not to slow down, not to give up. I have to say that this was one of the things that helped me through the last lap; this was the toughest four miles that I could remember doing. I got to my wave ski and then came the task of navigating through the bombing beach break sets; I had to wait for the right time to make my move. A set wave passed me and I paddled hard to make it through the impact zone. I felt another smaller wave building and getting ready to break behind me. I heard the wave break behind me and knowing that I had little to no stability because of the small fin, I hang on for the ride and what a ride it was! I first flipped upside down but I was holding on to my handles on my board and it is what kept me from losing control. I flipped back up, riding on the white water backwards and then sideways all the way to shore where my team was waiting. They grabbed me off my board and doing a move we call the “Kings Chair”; they rushed me across the finish line of the 7th Annual Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle! A dream is realized with the help of so many and a movement continues to build momentum because of the help of so many. As I sat in the sand at the finish line and the crowd was cheering, I could then take it all in and feel the stoke that had become my addiction, my life blood. This is what it is all about for me, feeling the stoke and inspiration that SUP and the standup paddle community continues to give to me and the disabled community. This all started on a whim and a thought of freedom on the water to be

44

just like the next guy.The fact that this is the most elite of races, in the most elite of conditions, and for this community of athletes to not even blink an eye of doubt or of disbelief. The fact that the SUP community stands behind an athlete regardless of his limitations is the biggest testament to the sport of standup paddling and the character of its athlete’s. This is the stoke and the amazing feelings I have every day because of the help of so many. I could not have accomplished this amazing feat without the help and support of so many, starting with all of my sponsors Rainbow Sandals, Kings Paddle Sports, Yolo Paddles, Spy Optic, PuraKai Clothing, Jet Pilot, Bull Taco, SUP Gladiator, and Z-Gear, also Jay “Sparky” Longley, Pat Huber and Barrett Tester from Rainbow Sandals for always being there to support my decision to keep racing the BOP no matter where it was held. My water team consisting of Augustine Costantino, David Langer, Ric Vaughn, Wesley Stewart, Sal Zavala, and Alberto Hernandez, you guys are the reason I felt so safe and comfortable in and out of the water; it was this team of men that made it possible for me to pull through this race, and for this my gratitude is eternal. Also, the camera crew that has been filming my documentary for the last 9 months, Jason Steck from Media Tech and Richie-O from “Get it Out Productions”, I appreciate the dedication and time you all put into this project. The guys that trained me, Jeff Warner and Mark from “Stay Covered”, you guys helped me more than I can tell you and I am grateful for your friendship. Also, a huge thanks to my friend Steve Boehne for whom I owe a great debt of gratitude. His continued contributions to the disabled water sports movement and to the athletes that wish to get involved is undying. Steve is always there to get people in the water and to help evolve this adaptive water sports movement; his continued efforts are awe inspiring. There is also a whole community of adaptive athletes I want to thank for pushing the limits and keeping this adaptive water sports movement rolling: Richard Julian from Access Surf Hawaii, Alana Nichols, Chris Oberle, Mark Thornton, Ryan Reddick, Jeff Munson, Lee Hinson, and Anthony Bonaccurso. It is people like you folks that keep us pushing our own limits to keep up with yours. Lastly, I want to thank my family and friends for the undying support to continue this journey, my brothers James and George, my cousin Leslie and her husband Rob, my sisters Catherine, Lisa and Robyn, and most of all, my mother Dyanna, who has been my biggest fan. I love you mother, and without your belief in me I am not sure where I would be. For a disabled athlete to place 202 out of over 300 competitors was the biggest surprise of all. To place in the top 2/3rds of the race was unexpected but a great victory for adaptive water sports in general, as it shows that with the right vehicle and the right team and people behind you, anything is possible if you just believe in yourself. See you in the water.
