JAY ADAMS THE ORIGINAL SEED By Alberto Hernandez

The word redemption is a very interesting word. The essence of the word means that one takes action so as to regain or gain possession of something in exchange for payment or the clearing of a debt. What if I was to tell you that the late, great, Jay Adams was the epitome of redemption. Known by many as a man who revolutionized the sport of skateboarding. He was also a man who made some mistakes, and was required to face the consequences of those mistakes. He was a valiant man who used his experiences, both positive and negative, to teach our youth the value of making good decisions. What if I was to tell you that this man lived a life to the full, impacted many along the way, and redeemed himself and became an inspiration to the many that knew him? This is the redemptive story of “The Original Seed”. This is the story of Jay Adams. With every story there is a beginning. Jay J. Adams was born on February 3, 1961, in Venice Beach, California, also known as, “Dogtown”, California. His love for surfing and skating began at the tender age of four. Jay was influenced by a local surfer by the name of Larry Bertlemann. Bertlemann was a surfer who was known for dragging his hand along the waves as he rode. In 1974, Adams became the youngest member of the Zephyr Surf Team in which they represented Jeff Ho Surfboards and Zephyr Productions. The Z Boys decided to become a skate team in 1975 during the Bahn-Cadillac Del Mar Internationals. One of the trademark moves that set the Z-Boys and Jay Adams apart from the competition was their explosive energy and low, bold, surf-like moves which was in contrast to the traditional 1960’s style that was primarily based around tricks.

man was going to manipulate the curve at the speed that he was going, but I kept my fingers crossed. As he speed down the hill and came to the curve, the young man showed a technique that reminded me of the style of Jay Adams and the Z-Boys. He place his hand on the ground as he sped down the slope so as to manipulate his turn (the young man had a special glove on that allowed him to place his hand on the ground without injuring it). That particular move was a trademark of Jay Adams and the Z-Boys which is being used to this day, in innovating ways. This was the kind of mind that Jay Adams exuded. He was ahead of his time, when pertaining to skating. He innovatively took a skill that he perfect by watching his boy hood idol, Larry Bertlemann, surf, and implemented that technique to his skating. That, and many other signature moves, revolutionized the world of skateboarding. A good friend of Jay Adams, Stacy Peralta, once proclaimed, “Jay Adams is probably not the greatest skater of all time, but I can say without fear of being wrong, that he is clearly the archetype of modern-day skateboarding.” It is evident that this statement is quite true as many of today’s avid skaters use his techniques which he perfected, and brought to the forefront to the skating world.

“YOU DON’T QUIT SKATING BECAUSE YOU GET OLD…YOU GET OLD BECAUSE YOU QUIT SKATING”

As we were heading up a hill in Baja California one of the young skates was sharing how he loved to skate the hills because of the speed and curves. I was a bit afraid for the young man because, though I am not a rocket scientist, I do know that high velocity and quicker reaction time on a steep curvy hill while skating can cause serious harm. I did not know how the young

wood and created a new team. Kent Sherwood and Jay Adams compiled the new team called, E-Z Riders. The name was changed six months later to, Z-Flex. Adams became the face of the Z- Flex brand. Adams was sponsored by, Hurley, Nixon, Osiris Shoes, Z-Flex,Tracker Trucks,Vercelli Surfboards, Carver Racks, Abec 11Wheels, and Black Flys. Due to his innovation and amazing style and abilities, Jay Adams was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame in 2012. While I was waiting for my teacher’s assistant to get me some photo copies for our next classroom activity, I overheard a few of the kids who enjoy skating share stories about a movie which they watched the night before. The boys were ecstatic about this movie that portrayed the lives of a legendary skate team that revolutionized the sport of skateboarding. I began to become a bit curious and so I asked the kids about the movie. They shared that the movie was about a skateboard team and a man that revolutionized the sport. They told me the name of the movie was “Lords of Dogtown”. I decided to watch the movie and the character that caught my eye was Jay Adams. I thought that I would begin to seek out some information about Jay Adams and try to implement his innovative mind into one

8

of my lessons. I learned that Jay went though some legal issues and drug problems. I thought this would be a great thing to share with the students, as I also learned how he changed his life and dedicated his time to speak to kids about making bad decisions. I believed that his story would completely relate to my kids as this school was a school for at risk kids who were in the school because of legal issues. We watched the movie and I was very impressed with how this team of skaters changed the face of skating. I was also surprised to see how the character of Jay Adams was always one step ahead of the game. I work with Urban Surf 4 Kids and I realized that Jay had a passion for surfing as well as skating. What’s more, he had a passion of taking his lessons in life and sharing them with those who are not only in his shoes, but are youth that need the inspiration of someone they can look up to. Jay dedicated the last years of his life to helping youth understand that there are consequences to our actions and that it is up to us to make the right decisions. During one of San Diego Juvenile Court and Community School Districts signature events called Passport to Life, the students were privileged to watch a number of skaters perform a demo for them. Jay Ad-

SEPTEMBER 2014 ams was the lead skater. He was invited by Dennis Martinez to speak at the event as well as show his skills to the amazed youth. He inspired many of the students and shared how drugs is not the way to go. Though they may seem like a fun and exciting outlet, they are simply destructive. He shared how his faith in Jesus changed his mind, his heart and his life. He became a man who was completely redeemed! Jay Adams once stated, “Those were the states of youth. The 70’s and 80’s were a different time. With punk rock there was a lot of violence and being young, drinking alcohol, and making bad choices. Now I want to encourage people not to go down the same road I went down” (Westside People Magazine, 2013).

Jay’s family lost a great husband, father, son, bother and friend. The valor of a man is not defined by how many times he abstains from bad choices. The valor of a man is defined by how many times he falls and choses to get up and fight and make things right. We all make bad choices in our lives. We all have made decisions to walk down roads that have left us scratching our heads and wondering why we were so stupid in making those choices. No human is immune to this plight in which we all face as individuals. What makes Jay Adams story so redemptive, so inspirational, so human, was that he did not simply stay down. He used that prowess attitude and that never say die mentality, to get back up despite his shortcomings. He made a difference in this world because he lived his life and chose to be a man that would make a difference in a positive manner. Urban Surf 4 Kids, the millions of surfers and skaters around the globe, families and friends of Jay Adams, and this author, honors him. He fought the good fight, and now, he is redeemed!

ON AUGUST 15, 2014, WE SADLY LOST A PILLAR IN THE SPORT OF SURFING AND SKATING ALIKE.

On August 15, 2014, we sadly lost a pillar in the sport of surfing and skating alike. We lost a man who was an icon to the many that idolized him. We sadly will never be able to watch Jay Adams speak so elegantly and eloquently to at risk youth.

g grom report hayden renee rouse By Alberto Hernandez Hayden Rouse is a twelve year old girl who is ripping it up on the waves in Huntington Beach, California and New Port Beach, California. Hayden is in 7th grade, and attends Sowers Middle School. Here hobbies are, playing the ukulele, skateboarding, and her number one love is surfing. Her favorite surf spots are at the Huntington Beach and New Port Beach areas. She loves to surf with her mom, Priscilla, and just enjoy the surf on her own.

12

Hayden loves art and music, and is one of the better surfers on her surf school surf team at Sower Middle School. She is a member of the WSA (Western Surfing Association) and NSSA Jr’s (National Scholastic Surfing Association). She is one of a very few female surfers on her team and is one who can hold her own on the water.

One of the reasons that Urban Surf 4 Kids enjoys seeking out young, amazing youth that are enjoying the stoke of surf, is we like to share how these inspirational youth give back. Hayden has volunteered for our Orange County Urban Surf 4 Kids surf camps on a number of occasions. Whenever she attends the events, this young girl is

OCTOBER 2014

willing to give her time, her talents, and her heart to the foster youth in the area. Another way that Hayden has given back is through US4K’s “Deck ‘Em Out Event”, where we gift wrap gifts for under privileged kids in San Diego, Florida, and Mexico. She also volunteers with her church when they set out for serve the poor days, and visiting nursing homes.

Her mother told me a great story about just how giving Hayden truly is. When she was ten, Hayden decided to raise money for Dalit children in India. She did this by organizing her friends to make bracelets and sell the bracelets with all of the proceeds going to the worthy cause. When I asked her mother what caused the young girl to give in this capacity she told me, “I’m not really sure. She heard of some stories about the kids in India and decided to create

a way to provide money for them.” What an amazing young lady. She not only is doing great in school, ripping it up on the Huntington Beach waves, and giving back through Urban Surf 4 Kids. She is also trying to make a difference on a grander scale. The world needs more Hayden Rouses. Urban Surf 4Kids is proud to present Hayden Rouse, a young girl making a difference on the waves and in the hearts of others.

Baja Surf Lessons/Lanisurf International

La Chama is the founder of Baja Surf Lessons/ Lanisurf & Tours International. She is a professional surf instructor and personal trainer. She teaches surfing, windsurfing and other watersport activities to adults, children, and disable people. “La Chama” has been teaching surf lessons, water sport activities and physical conditioning all over the world. At the present time, she is located at KM 38 in Baja California Norte. Chama prides herself in safety, quality of instruction, and attention to detail. La Chama is able to speak four languages. Baja surf lessons/Lanisurf &Tours Int prepares students to learn proper water safety and etiquette, paddling techniques, turning the surfboard, maneuvering over waves, and positioning to stand up and ride his or her first wave and, warm up exercises. Beyond surf instruction, Chama’s program focuses on safety and environmental awareness. They strive to keep their marine environment safe and healthy. They offer private, semi-private and group lessons to all levels. Students are surrounded by elements of nature and learn to appreciate the

14

beauty of the ocean. To reinforce this respect for nature, the kids are educated about the environment, how they can help to make Baja a better and cleaner place to live. They also encourage students to stand up for Mother Nature! Surf and environmental lessons are combined. Support in the development of surf and teaching skills is given as a reward for awareness, knowledge, and a new attitude. Most importantly, they are a Christian Physical Education surf program. This program has a goal to go through all the peninsula of Baja to help under privileged and low income families. Chama’s program provides youth with positive, healthy alternatives to the negative influences that surround them. Experiences such as swimming, learning about the ocean, and surfing a wave, present exhilarating challenges that youth can successfully meet with preparation, training and a desire to succeed. Baja Surf Lessons has a great team that has a focus on achieving these goals. Baja Surf Lessons is a program that runs throughout the year. It starts after the fall and continues through July every year.

From August 2013 to mid-June 2014 Baja Surf Lessons had the opportunity to share the program with an orphanage in Mexico called, Casa Hogar: Ninos de la Promesa, in Playas de Tijuana. Every Wednesday, the team got together and had the kids participate in some physical education. After some good P.E., the group got in the water and began to learn how to surf. As well, Chama had the opportunity to bring the program among other teenagers throughout other surrounding communities. In Cham’s opinion, “none of this would have been possible without a team. It is and always will be about teamwork. By the grace of God we have been able to progress, and we will continue to change lives.”

Here are a few future events for the program throughout 2014-2015: • Environmental lessons • Beach cleaning days Surf lessons, surf theory and P.E • Private surf lessons for young talents • Yearly surf contests for all orphans who participated in the program and other orphanages (Casa Hogares). • Annual “Inter orphanages Beach Games” Contact Chama to set up private surf lessons while in Baja ISAWIND@HOTMAIL.COM 760452835

SHOP SPOTLIGHT

SEPTEMBER 2014 By Alberto Hernandez

Surf Hut, Imperial

Beach, California

The Surf Hut is a great surf shop right on the beach in Imperial Beach California. Jesus Ramirez is the owner of this great surf shop. Jesus is married and has two kids. He has owned Surf Hut since 1986. He told me that he opened the doors simply because, “I wanted to do something where I could make money and at the same time have lots of fun.” Jesus shared that he realized that a surf shop was needed in the Imperial Beach area and so he opened his doors with the hope of meeting a need. He shared that the reason why he gets anywhere from 100 customers a day is because of the family oriented customer service that he and his five employees provide. One of the main reasons that Urban Surf 4 Kids the magazine

stress the importance of doing these surf shop spotlights is to bring some exposure not only to what the surf shop is about, but how the owners give back to the community. Jesus is always willing to give raffle items and donate boards, and rent boards, for the Urban Surf 4 Kids events. “I love to give back because it goes in line with what I believe. I believe that God has blessed me with many things and it is my responsibility to give back as best I can” Jesus shared with me. I asked Jesus if there was anything that he wanted people to know about him or if there was anything special that he wanted me to add to this article? He stated, “I do want you to share one of my favorite scriptures in the bible, Jerimiah 33:3. The scripture says, ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know’ that scripture is how I live my life” Jesus emphatically stated. Go out and visit Jesus and the Surf Hut family. You will be well taken care of, and you will have the chance to experience someone who cares about your needs and at the same time is having the time of his life.

Volunteer OF THE MONTH:

Jen Finkelstein By Alberto Hernandez

Urban Surf 4 Kids is proud to acknowledge our wonderful volunteers. Our organizations knows that US4K would not be able to empower our youth without our volunteers. This month we are proud to honor Jen Finkelstein as US4K October volunteer of the month. Jen has a Masters in Ed in Counseling from University of Hawaii and a BA in Elementary Education from Humboldt State. She is a LPCC (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor). She has worked with different non-profits since 2007 and currently works for North County Lifeline as a supervisor for the Community Assessment Team Program and CalGRIP programs (her organization works with at-risk youth who are entering into the juvenile justice system and help youth and families). She likes to surf, travel, camp, and hike, read, and cruise at the beach or BBQ with friends. Her favorite thing to do, is hang out with her awesome dog, Peanut. “Some of my favorite surf spots are Grandview, Pipes, Oceanside and K38”, Jen shared. “I found out about Urban Surf 4 Kids by accident. I love surfing and I love working with kids. However, I believe that true growth and change comes from inspiration and passion. Surfing, or finding a passion about something can save lives. A friend told me about a different organization and in researching that, I came across US4K”, Jen explained. Jen then took the initiative to contact Wes (founder of US4K) and met him and the US4K crew at a feed the homeless event downtown. “What an amazing experience”, Jen proclaimed, “It was so grass roots and built on passion, love and caring. All the youth, volunteers, US4K staff and everyone involved was incredibly nice, welcoming and the event was really fun. You could really tell that everyone was there because they wanted to help and give back.” Jen felt an instant connection to this team. After that, they invited her to a meeting, where they asked Jen to help with So Cali Dreaming. “Helping to create this event was fun, rewarding and motivating” Jen stated. Jen really loved working on the team with Jess, DeBora, Wes, Alberto and everyone involved. The most inspiring part of the planning was anytime she reached out in the community for support and mentioned Wes or US4K, “they would drop everything and do anything for

22

us. It was incredible the support we received. But all the planning did not prepare me for what would happen at this event” Jen confessed. Jen shared how, “The kids that came from Nevada were so inspiring and amazing. They taught me and changed me and became my mentors. Their strength, resiliency, beauty and heart shined in everything that we did. I felt lucky to be a part of this. That was what keeps me working with Urban Surf and being a dedicated volunteer. The youth are not "kids we work with" but part of the team working to make a societal change. The staff, volunteers, youth and everyone works together, has fun and gives back.” I then asked Jen what her favorite part of volunteering with US4K is, and she explained a moment when she volunteered for So Cali Dreaming. “My favorite part of the So Cali Dreaming event was to be able to connect with all of the youth that came on that trip. I felt a true bond with each one of them that came on that trip. It is hard to pick one person or situation because they all touched me so much. I was really inspired by both Anna and Liz for taking a huge risk and changing their lives to move to San Diego and help with Urban Surf. They both have given so much back to the organization and to other foster youth. I am also especially inspired by Shae. When I first met her, she told me she was incredibly shy. However, she consistently took huge risks, put herself out there, never backed down or gave up. Then, at So Cali Dreaming 2, she got on stage and spoke in front of everyone! Unbelievable. To watch her grow and see what she can do and has done is so inspiring to me. I am so thankful for the friends and family I have made in the short time I have been working with Urban Surf and am excited to continue and grow with all of them.” I think that I speak for the whole US4K family when I say that Jen’s heart to serve our kids is inspiring. One of the great attributes of fire fighters is that they run into the fire to save lives instead of the rest of us who flee from the fires. They are true heroes and we honor and respect them for it. Jen is a person who is not running from the “fire”, she is running into the “fire” and is empowering young people in the process. With that, we honor her for her heart and dedication.

So Cali Dreaming:

We Are Not Statistics! By Alberto Hernandez

T

here are over 463,000 foster youth in the United States. Once these young people age out of the foster care system, many of them, about 51% age out of the foster youth system without employment. Over 50% of those youth end up homeless and over 34% find themselves in trouble with the law. After emancipation, many foster youth are in battles with depression, emotional pain, abandonment issues, and extreme poverty. Yet, with all those negative statistics, I met some beautiful foster youth that with one voice proclaimed, “We are not statistics!” Urban Surf 4 Kids, and the Urban Surf 4 Kids family, hosted the So Cali Dreaming event from August 26 to September 2. US4K invited 15 foster youth from Nevada for a 5 night stay in San Diego. The foster youth were required to achieve a number of goals such as, writing an essay explaining why he or she should be invited. The foster youth were accompanied to San

28

Diego from Las Vegas and the Reno area by five chaperones. The arrived in San Diego on Thursday the 26th, and the festivities began. On the first day of the event, the youth had the opportunity to enjoy an hour of simulated surfing at The Wave House, located in Mission Beach. Many of them enjoyed simulated boogie boarding and surfing. The highlight of The Wave House event was when Wesley Stewart was challenged by one of the foster youth to ride one of the waves. The interesting part was that the foster youth that challenged him was not willing to ride the wave machine. Wesley told the girl that if he did it then she had to ride a wave as well. The challenge was on. Pride was on the line, and both, with integrity as their guide, made the commitment and fulfilled their promise. It was great to see the “ice broken” because of that moment.

After some great fun at The Wave House, we all met by the beach to eat some food donated by Fresh and Easy, and to hash out the itinerary for the next four days. During this time, Wesley and Deborah Stewart shared their hearts and their expectations for the foster youth during the event. I then had the opportunity to share my experiences as a former orphan and homeless man. I had two very important messages for these incredibly young and vibrant people. The first message was simple, none of them are statistics, they are all awesome, amazing, incredible (the adjectives can go on and on) young people with incredible destinies and lives ahead of them. The second message was imperative for me to share. I wanted them to appreciate the present moments and to live in the moment during the duration of the So Cali Dreaming events. I also wanted them to know that we are all family, and that the spirit of “Ohana” was present in this group. I could tell that they were all very excited to get the festivities started and the US4K family was as well. On Friday the group was given a free day, where they had the chance to spend the day at the beach. Many of them do not get to experience the beach on a daily basis and

so, that day, the group enjoyed the stoke of the ocean, the beach town (They decided to head back to Mission Beach for the day) and the beautiful San Diego weather. After the day’s event, one of the foster youth, a young man who has experienced pain like no other, made a comment to Wesley and I that inspired us and brought a tear to our eyes. He said, “This is the best day of my life!” Imagine a day at the beach, something that many San Diegans take for granted, was the best day in this foster youth’s life. That is what Urban Surf 4 Kids is all about. We are focused on empowering young people, and making that specific day, the

day in which the perspective youth attends our events, the best day in his or her lives. It seemed to me like our mission was accomplished that day. Saturday August 30th was the main event. Our So Cali Dreaming event took place near the Imperial Beach pier. The first part of the event was a surf camp that was led by our “Big Kahuna” volunteer, Craig Jenkins. There were about 53 foster youth that attended the surf camp, along with the 15 foster youth from Nevada. The event was so amazing. Many people volunteered their time, and their passion for surf, to encourage the youth that attended. Because of the leadership of Craig Jenkins, and his propensity for organization, the surf camp was a complete success. After the surf camp, the youth and volunteers got a chance to eat some food complements of Fresh and Easy (Fresh and Easy donated hotdogs and hamburgers, and our friend Phil helped us

by grilling) and also Bull Taco, who donated over 600 tacos for the youth and volunteers. The event was culminated by a few vibrant speakers and the music of Ryan Brolliar, who did an incredible job, and brought the event to its climatic edge with his uplifting and inspiring music. After the festivities, Urban Surf 4 Kids showed, on a portable movie screen, the hit movie, “Soul Surfer”. Everyone who attended the event had a blast, and the foster youth were inspired and appreciative. The foster youth were exhausted on Sunday, so we decided to do our paddle board event during the late afternoon at J street pier. One of our volunteers, Sherry Bravo, took time out of her busy day to teach the foster youth from Nevada how to stand up paddle board. All of the youth had the opportunity to take a trip around the J street bay and enjoy the relaxing beauty of a sunset paddle. After the sunset paddle, the foster youth were able to enjoy the Camp KOA pool, Jacuzzi, and surrounding area (The foster youth stayed at Camp KOA during the So Cali Dreaming Event). The Nevada foster youth also enjoyed a bonfire and s’mores. They all enjoyed the rest

30

of the night and were excited about the final event of So Cali Dreaming, the opportunity to serve the homeless. On Monday, at 10:00 am, the foster youth were able to serve the homeless by making sandwiches and creating cards with encouraging words written to individuals so as to motivate and encourage the spirits of the homeless. I loved that event more than any of the other events. This, in my opinion, was the best event. To watch foster youth, excitedly give back to people that are less fortunate than themselves is a true blessing. I saw the joy in their eyes and their collective hearts. They took time to make the cards and speak to a number of men and women that are struggling to make ends meet. They encourage men and women who make the streets their sanctuary and home. After we ran out of food, we all got together to share our experiences. Wesley shared about what the true meaning of love is. Love is a verb that

should be showed through action rather than simple words. Many of the youth shared their hearts and how the event, particularly the love that they were showed, changed their perspective lives. Though statistics can at times be indicators of some kind of truth, statistics do not define the individual. These young foster youth understand that principle. They are not statistics, they are world changers. Some will be doctors, some lawyers, some motivational speakers. They all will be successful men and women in their communities. They will be graduates of college and admirable mothers and fathers to their children. They are not statistics, they are examples. Urban Surf 4 Kids So Cali Dreaming event is a platform to make dreams come true for young people who have suffered pain that many who read these words can only imagine. Statistics do not define the individual. When it comes to this group, I believe with all my heart that they each will defy all odds and live not as statistics, but as men and women who dream, fight and love themselves and those around them.

Travel Article: By Alberto Hernandez

I

can remember while going through my Bachelor of Science program being “forced” to take a class that pertained to the physical sciences. I was not bright enough to take physics or chemistry, so I decided to take a geology class. During one of those boring lectures, my professor began to talk about the ocean and how in the ocean there is what is called a “hot spot”. He shared that due to plate tectonics (you don’t even want me to get into that) the Hawaiian Islands were formed. It is also why the Islands have volcanoes and are beautiful due to the plant life. I was very intrigued by what I learned about the Island, the volcanoes, and primarily about the ocean. I decided that I would do some extensive research when pertaining to these intriguing Islands. I realized that not only are the Islands very interesting, they are filled with rich

34

tradition and a people that are truly proud of their heritage. I was, as they say, hooked. Besides the Island itself, something that caught my attention is the way the ocean, and all of the life in the ocean exists. The ocean is one of the most beautiful resources that we have on this planet. Millions of people make pilgrimages to the best costal destinations with the expectation to seek the majesty of the ocean. The ocean provides us with a positive energy that takes us from a state of sadness, depression, and anger, to happiness, gratitude, and peace. The ocean has been explored by many, and yet there is still a mysterious component to our incredible ocean. This is why so many desire to explore through deep sea fishing, diving, and snorkeling. Yet, what if I told you that there is a place on the planet where you can explore the beauty, majesty, and mysteriousness of the

ocean and get a true sense of the traditions and the beautiful people of Hawaii? The clear waters of Kona, Hawaii and the rich tradition of the Island, bring us to that point of blissful expectation that we all seek when pertaining to our curiosity.

The beautiful costal area of Kona stretches for 60 miles from the Kona International Airport to the Kealkekua Bay. The area was best known for the many coffee farms and historic Hawaiian landmarks. Today Kailua Village (Kailua-Kona) is a bustling, gathering place in the district, about 15 minutes from the Kona International Airport. Within this intriguing area, there are a number of shops, restaurants, and nightlife. Because the area is shielded from winds by Mauna Lou (One of the five volcanoes that form the Hawaii Island), South Kona’s calm and clear waters are perfect for snorkeling, diving, and spotting dolphins. Of course, the White Sand beaches are the main attraction at Kona. Boogies boarding, surfing, stand up paddle boarding are a must if you desire to take the family to Kona, Hawaii.

Kahalu’U Beach Park is the place for you. The area is reserved for snorkeling and surfing. It is home to some of the most beautiful and exotic tropical fish on the Big Island. Honokohau Beach is a bay behind the Honokohau Harbor. It is a long sandy beach that is perfect for surfers, snorkelers, and sunbathers. For those that are intermediate to advanced surfers, Lyman is the place for you. Lyman is located on Ali’I Drive in Kailua-Kona. Lyman has waves that break left and is primarily known as a long board wave. This deep water point break is epic for those who desire to seek a great place to ride or to watch those who are enjoying the stoke.

If you are like me and you enjoy getting to know the historical sites of the location that you are visiting then Kona has a number of intreging places for you to visit. There are a number of sites and attractions for you and the whole family. One of the more historical areas on the Island is the Puuhonua o Honaunau National Park. The park is located in south Kona, and was once a refugee location for lawbreakers in early Hawaii. The site features temples, fish pods, and The Great Wall. Another wonderful attraction is Historic Kailua Village (Kailua-Kona). Here one can experience the Hulihee Palace, a summer home for Hawaiian royalty.

There are a number of great surf spots on the Big Island. It is imperative to know your own limits as some of the surf can be dangerous. I was reading some reviews about the surf in Kona and one of the reviewers stated that her husband broke his pelvis bone due to a surfing accident. Knowing one’s limits takes a good vacation to an amazing vacation. Disregarding your limits takes a good vacation into a disaster. If you want to simply snorkel or do some good surfing, then

35

It is also the location of the first Hawaiian Church called, Mokuaikaua Church. At this historical landmark, you and the family can take a tour of Ahuena Heiau, which was built by Kamehameha I. There are many great historical attractions in the area, another prominent one is Keauhou. Here there are three restored heiau (temples), The Kuamoo Battle and Lekelele Burial grounds, and a holua slide (stone ramp). This also happens to be the birth place of Kamehameha III. After a long day of surfing, paddle boarding, or site seeing, you and the family will need to get a good night’s rest. There are a number of great places in the Kona area to rest and relax. I personally suggest you and the family stay at The Kona Hawaiian Guest House. The guest house stay features different rooms with lookout themes. There is the Dolphin Lookout Room, the Whale Lookout Room, and the Jungle Garden Room, to name a few. These rooms are very affordable and bring to life the culture and experience of the Big Island people. Within the Guest House there are a number of special packages that you and the family, or you and that special someone, can

36

enjoy. There is the Romance Package, where you and a loved one can share a couple’s message and spa treatment. There is also the Yoga Retreat in Hawaii Package. In this package you will be treated to a one day yoga retreat and a structural couple’s message. There are a number of great packages that are reasonably priced. The best option is to take the time to visit http://www. konahawaiiguesthouse.com/specials-and-packages.htm and get more details. Besides great places to stay, there are also a number of authentic Hawaiian food restaurants that you and the family can enjoy.

It is interesting that Hawaii is one of the most sought after destinations in the world. Many people are intrigued by the Island’s beauty and mystery. I have visited Hawaii on a number of occasions, and I have always left the Island more educated. At the same time, I rarely leave the Island with all my questions and adventurous desires met. I always want more, I can never get enough. Kona, Hawaii is one of those places where once you visit, you will be asking for more. My geology class did not do Kona, Hawaii any justice. Pictures, videos, or articles like this one, will never give you the essence of how beautiful the Big Island truly is. You must experience it for yourself. You, and the family, need to get on a plane and take a vacation to a place that is filled with beauty, majesty, mystery, and adventure. I guarantee, once you visit Kona, Hawaii, you will not want to leave. You will be like me, you will not get enough, and you will want to get back to Kona, Hawaii again and again. Once you make it to the Big Island, it will be your go to vacation destination for the rest of your life.

Top 10

Superf by Tamara Jacobi, For UrbanSurf4Kids tailwindjunglelodge.com

Exercise is part of healthy living. Indeed, many of us thrive on active and athletic lifestyles. We push ourselves hard with our surf sessions, workouts, and adventures. We’re consistently demanding performance, working our muscles and moving our bodies. As a result, athletes burn through macro-nutrients, micro-nutrients and calories exponentially more quickly than the average person. With this in mind, superfoods are an athlete’s best friend! Here are 10 superfoods that should be staples in every athlete’s kitchen. 1. CHIA SEEDS. These little guys were a dietary staple for the Aztec and Mayan ultra-runners of ancient Mexico. Their unique nutritional profile of omega-3s,, antioxidants, protein, calcium, iron, potassium, vitamins and nutrients make chia a perfect food for athletes. Chia seeds will keep you satisfied for hours, combat dehydration, promote recovery and more. Add to smoothies, juices, yogurt, granola, soup, and more.

42

2. SPIRULINA. This green algae is a gift to athletes. Incorporating spirulina into your diet can increase your speed, energy, endurance and mental ability. Spirulina supports the body with detoxification and muscle recovery, offering three times more complete protein than any other plant proteins. Look for spirulina in energy bars, supplements or in powdered form. 3. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR (ACV). When it comes to balancing electrolytes and preventing “bonking” mid workout, apple cider vinegar is a secret weapon for athletes. Add 2 tbsp ACV, honey and a squeeze of lime to water and voila, you’ve made yourself a sports drink. 4. TART CHERRIES & BERRIES. Tart cherries have been proven to support athletes with speedy recovery. They’re not only a potent anti-inflammatory food, they’re also packed with anti-oxidants. Be sure to look to berries anti-oxidants as well. Ben Greenfield, an Ironman triathlete and coach encour-

ages athletes to go for darker berries such as pomegranate, acai, blueberries, raspberries, and goji berries. 5. FISH. Omega 3 rich fish such as herring, salmon, mackerel and sardines will support athletic bodies with reducing inflammation and promoting muscle recovery with high quality protein.

foods for Athletes 6. QUINOA. This seed (often mistaken for a grain) offers complex carbs for sustained energy, complete protein for muscle recovery, healthy fats, vitamins and nutrients, all in one tiny little package. Need I say more? Combine beans, veggies, nuts and quinoa for a perfect on-the-go meal. 7. KALE AND DARK LEAFY GREENS. When it comes to dense nutrition, kale is king. Athletic bodies (and all bodies!) should absolutely include a spectrum of dark leafy in their diets - kale, collards, swiss chard, arugula, dandelion. Greens for breakfast can actually be amazing pre-workout meal.

43

8. NUTS! I feared nuts for many years, thinking that they would make me fat. Now that I’ve restored my metabolism walnuts and almonds have become my favorite on-the-go workout food. Nutrient dense, calorie dense, and an amazing source of plant based protein. A handful of these will keep you going for hours. 9. SWEET POTATOES. Carbohydrates are the primary source of fuel for athletes. Yet, not all carbs are created equally. Sweet potatoes also have a low glycemic index, which means the carbohydrates within them are digested and absorbed gradually, providing sustained energy for long workouts. They’re tasty too! 10. SPICE IT UP! Keep inflammation at bay with turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, garlic and cayenne. Let’s nourish and care for our athletic bodies so we can maintain our active lifestyles for years to come.
