AN INTERVIEW WITH BRAD DOMKE AND DYLAN PALMER

a country club of sorts. There are big wave surfers throughout the world that have a great deal to give to the sport. Tow surfers are some of them.

It was a plan to go to Portugal last year. We met in Laguna Beach and planned it out. I would help him achieve his goals and accomplish his dreams, and we would continue to travel the world on a mission to find the most perfect big waves on the planet. I always prefer to tow into them. Brad loves his jet skis, paddles his skim board into big waves, and most things in between. Like I said, I always prefer to have a ski.

Paddling into a wave is awesome, so is towing, or rowing, or dropping from a helicopter for that matter. My friend and roommate, Dane Kealoha, puts it this way, “No matter how you get out into the ocean and play on the waves, you surf.” Great people like Dane are few and far between, and when they live amongst us for any longer than they really needed to, it is a blessing to us all. Enter the living legend.

I am a professional tow surfer, or as critics like, Shane Dorian, have termed athletes like me, a “Tow Bro.” Brad is a skim boarder, and not just that, he tows into big waves and rides them on the same board he slides across the sand on. Without fins, riding a big wave seems like it would be impossible. Yet Brad Domke makes this feat an every day thing. His skill level is beyond anyone on Earth by a large margin now. What happened on our first trip together, shook the core of big wave surfing to its’ knees.

Bruce Lee inspired millions, and his words here are relevant I believe.“Choose the positive. You have a choice, you are master of your attitude, choose the positive, the constructive. Optimism is a choice that leads to success.” These words inspire. These words make us worthy of success when we put them into action. Words like these are hard to find in the country club atmosphere that I mentioned earlier in this article. Terms like “tow bro” and comments such as, “a monkey could tow surf,” are the furthest thing from positive. Recently Dane Kealoha was challenged with these negative words. Specifically, Shane Dorian was quoted in an interview as saying that tow surfers at Jaws, a premiere break in Maui that is the epicenter of big wave riding, were now “clipped.” This comment hurt Dane, and he simply stated, “Shane was clipped.”

The core of big wave surfing in 2014 is a world unto itself. The former “Billabong” XXL is now owned and operated by the ASP, or Association of Surfing Professionals. There are certain athletes that have not been invited to attend these events. It is

6

SEPTEMBER 2014 With this ridiculous behavior going on in and around my chosen profession, I was inspired to bring the positive to light no matter what. For years I have shared photos of people tow surfing with a simple caption, “I love tow surfing.” Enter Bradley Domke. Bruce Lee would be proud. Yet Brad is on a quest of his own. Having endured a more than unfair amount of criticism, and of course a huge amount of ostracism, his mission is clear: make a statement and become included by doing so. The end result is that he has surpassed the standards of the current sport of surfing entirely. His friend and filmmaker Dylan Palmer, shares the credit for that accomplishment. You see, once Brad Domke and Dylan Palmer set out to change things and make themselves heard, seen, and noticed, the state of affairs in the sport of surfing have changed drastically. When I first saw Domke towing into waves 20 feet tall and surfing them better than I could with fins, and better than anyone in the world can without them, I knew that this was a game changer. Jon Jon Florence and Kelly Slater cannot surf a skim board like this, neither can Dan Reynolds or Shane Dorian. No one can do this like this but him at this point. That is surfing revolutionized. For it to be done with a jet ski is where I came in. Driving a ski proficiently in big surf is a gift ready to be given. When Dane Kealoha towed Garret, or when Laird towed Koa, when Garret or Manny, or Bobo or Phil, Jerm or Skinny towed me into the waves, my life was changed drastically each and every time. When I towed Garret into the waves of his life at Nazare, or Oscar down in Puerto, or Bobo in Maui, and most recently Domke in Puerto, it felt like throwing a game-winning pass, as I am sure it felt like receiving one to them. Domke is changing lives by surfing with no fins and using a jet ski to get it done, and I am behind him 100%. It all started when Brad’s friends Samwise Stinnet and his brother Jake brought B.D. to my attention after they had traveled south to learn how to do “the Domke.” They had been spending time with him in Pascuales, Mexico, and were more than inspired. In fact they were downright determined. They hunted me down and said they would pay for gas and lunch to make it happen. They wanted to do what he did, and I was happy to partake in something new. I towed these guys into some head high surf on their skim boards, and of course tried it myself. They ripped, I slid out, and that was that. They made a little video, and showed me Brad on you tube. This absolutely blew my mind wide open. One year, and a whole lot of me telling people to check out this YouTube sensation later, mutual friends introduced us and our plan to tow into big waves together was hatched. For the future, he cannot drive proficiently yet, and I cannot tow into a giant wave on a skim board yet, so we will both learn these tricks and add them to our game. For now, when Mexico called, we decided to meet there as a huge swell hit. Teaming up on short notice without any real friendship running was a challenge, yet we rose to the occasion. As a perfect wave loomed outside it seemed destined for us. I towed him into it with ease, and as it turned out, the wave happened to be one of the best of the swell. Brad did one

7

of his blunt slide bottom turns and pulled into the corner of a massive Puerto barrel, only to get spit on profusely by the beast that chased him and his sliding “Silver Surfer” skim board. It was history made. The XXL has nominated the ride for “Ride of the Year,” and our work is done for now. I was staying with Brad and Dylan so I interviewed them shortly after the event. This is the window into a couple of hard working guys thoughts after accomplishing more than they could have wished for. David Langer (DL): “So Dylan, (Brad get out here), where are you guys from?” Brad Domke (BD): “WABASSO beach” Dylan Palmer (DP): “Vero Beach” DL: “When did you guys meet?” DP: “About five years ago I was shooting Blake Jones at the Inlet, and this guy (looks at Brad), came walking up and looked hungry. I had a Clif Bar, so I gave it to him I then asked him if he wanted to go back out and do some work to get some clips. He said ok, and it led to our first video together entitled 3 days of Inlet.” BD: “Well, we went to the same junior high school together so we really met back then. We went to different high schools though, he went to Vero Beach and I went to Sebastian.” DL: “Are you guys the same age?” BD: “I’m a year older.” I would see him around here and

8

there, yet I didn’t really start getting to know him until we met at Sebastian. DL: “What came after that?” BD: “After that, I went to Delaware for a contest and ended up winning it.The money I got from that I used to go to Nicaragua with Dylan.” DL: “So you bought the tickets for the both of you?” BD: “Yeah.” DP: “So the next project we did together was called Nicaragua. That was a sick trip.” DL: “So this was all before Mexico. What inspired riding big waves on a skim board?” BD: “When I was 11 or 12 I towed into some waves in the Gulf with Alex Parker and Matt Kechele. Ever since then, I wanted to do more of it.When I went to Pascuales and saw what Brian Conley was doing I wanted in. I was paddling my skim board into some while they were doing “steppys” and was just blown away at what I was seeing. Barrel after perfect barrel. I made an arrangement with Conley to pay for gas and get driven into some the next day. My first wave I did a 180 chop hop.The next wave I got barreled and was hooked.” DL: “Where have you been so far Dylan?” DP: “I’ve been to the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and El Salvador.” DL: “How about together?” DP: “We have been to Panama, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, and Mexico like seven times.” DL: “Brad how about you?” BD: “I’ve been to the North Shore, Japan, France, Spain, Portugal, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic.” DL: “Dylan, did you go to film school? If not, how did you become the well rounded perfectionist that you are behind the lens?” DP: “I didn’t go to film school. I started filming at the age of 18. I actually had plans to go to music school

SEPTEMBER 2014 before that.Yet after I blew my knee up surfing I started filming Blake and other guys like that a lot and that became my passion. I literally fell in love with it.” DL: “Well it shows in your work. I hear ESPN bought a clip from you of the swell here in Puerto Escondido. That is about as good as it gets for a sports cinematographer, congratulations.” DP: “Yeah I’m honored. Thank you Dave. Our hard work is finally paying off.” DL: “Who are a few of your mentors or sources of inspiration and guidance?” DP: “I studied Taylor Steele like it was school. So I guess I lied when I said I didn’t go to school. Really though, guys like Nathan Adams, and Jesse Hines helped me a lot and inspired me as well. Kai Neville is great. The best is Joe G. He is on it. DL: “How do you guys like to inspire people beyond expressing yourself artistically?” DP: “I like to give clips to people and help aspiring professionals when they need it.” BD: “Teaching people to skim usually right now. I would like to help with things like the Mau…lioli.” DL: “Mauli Ola Foundation?” BD: “Yeah. I mean, I have a couple friends that work with them and I would love to come out and help. I wish they would include skim boarding. I think that people would love to learn to skim board too.” DL: “Well you’ll have to make that happen I’m sure they would be stoked to have you come and get involved. Where are you guys heading next?” BD: “I guess wherever the next swell is. We don’t really like to discuss it, like it may curse the mission. I truly believe that if I say that I am going to Teahpou to do this and that, that Teahpou hears me say that and in turn says, ‘I don’t think so.’ I’m just motivated to go get more waves and keep setting the bar for the biggest waves ridden on a skim board.” DL: “Shane Dorian said you should be invited to Cape Fear, the invitee only contest at “Ours” next month. Do you want to go there and tow into one regardless of whether you receive an invite or not?” BD: “Oh yeah of course. I want to do that, it looks like so much fun.”

DL: “The importance of this interview is that you two have done.” BD: “Us three!” DL: “Ok, yet this is me interviewing you guys so let’s stay on that. This is something that it usually takes contests, and companies full of people with decades of experience, and a lot of advertising dollars to achieve. What the two of you have done is beyond what the XXL or contests like Cape Fear hope to do. Without giving them too much credit here, and in the spirit of that accomplishment, is there anything else you guys would like to end this with?” DP: “All I have to say is that, this is my brother right here and we have the most fun that we’ve ever had in our lives together, and I just want people to know that.” BD: “And that’s probably the realest thing you could ever say.” DL: “Well I think that there are two kids out there that are going to be highly motivated by that. That’s beautiful, that inspires me, thank you!” DP: “One last word to the kids, if you have a dream, don’t sit around thinking about it, go after it with all you got.” BD: “Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you “can’t” do something. Use that as motivation to show them they’re wrong, and most importantly, have fun.” DP: “Yeah always have fun. I’ve heard so many times, “oh you have to go to school,” while other professionals told me to make sure that I was having fun. The keeping it fun part is crucial to success I believe.” BD: “I’ve been a professional skim boarder since I was 15, I’m 25 now. Ever since I was 15, I would wake up and watch surf and skim videos to get motivated for my day. Things really haven’t changed, and I don’t want them to change anytime soon. If you’re eating your bowl of cereal watching your surf videos, watch them again, and keep going.” BD: “Man, we could go all day about this stuff.” DL: “No please, that’s good, I’m going to have a lot of writing as it is.” We all laughed for a few seconds and that was that.

SIESTA KEY FLORIDA

Throughout the year Urban Surf 4 Kids the Magazine has proudly presented wonderful vacation locations throughout the world to our readers. We have shared the amazing surf of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. We were inspired by the beauty and awestruck majesty of Costa Rica. In our September addition, we are focusing on a place right in our back yard, in the good old United State of America. Our travel location for this month will be none other than the amazing vacation destination, Siesta Keys, Florida. Siesta Key Florida is a barrier Island off the southwestern coast of Florida in the United States. It is situated between Roberts Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. A portion of it lies within the city boundary of Sarasota, but the majority of the key is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sarasota County. Siesta Key was an inhibited barrier

Island until the early 20 century. Prior to this time, the Island was known as Clam Island. Most residents during the early stages of the Island were fishermen, yet very few lived in the area and notwithstanding, even fewer families had vacation homes in the area (Siesta Key History, 2010). Today Siesta Keys has a population of over 24,000 people, and attracts approximately 350,000 people year round. There are a number of delightful attractions for the whole family to enjoy. The residents of Siesta Key make sure that every minute spent with your loved ones on the beautiful Island will be well worth the investment. Of course, we all know that a vacation is an investment that we make because we are seeking to take a break from the everyday hustle of life and take time to enjoy a different experience with the whole family. Siesta Key is the perfect destination for an investment of a lifetime! One of the more desired attractions of Siesta Key is the amazing white sand beach. The beach does not get overly crowed and because the sands are white, the sand does not get extremely hot. In essence, you and your loved one can take a stroll during the mid day on the beach and not have to make a run for it because your feet are excruciatingly hot. In terms of the surf in Siesta Key, it is an exposed beach with a pier. Because of this the break at times has inconsistent surf. Summer offers the best conditions for surfing. The waves are more likely to be from local windswells than distant groundswells and the ideal wave angle is from the south southwest. There are always a number of local surf shops that will be willing and able to teach the novice surfer the ins and outs of the swell. The shops that are located centrally within the beach area have a number of surf boards, stand up paddle boards, and kayaks at a reasonable price. When your family is tired from all the water sport ac-

tivities and the day at the beach, you can relax by getting a hotel room at a very reasonable price. One of the hotel stays that this author recommends is Siesta Key Bungalows. This wonderful Siesta Key lodging is located on Florida’s Gulf Coast and sits directly on the pristine Heron Lagoon. Siesta Key Bungalows accommodations include 10 one-bedroom bungalows, some overlooking the tranquil, blue salt waters of Heron Lagoon, and others overlook the tropical courtyard of Siesta Key Bungalows. Besides the very reasonable and paradise-like accommodations at the Siesta Key Bungalows, there are a number of wonderful hotels and resorts on or near the ocean. Possibly you are like this author and you want to experience the sites and historical landmarks of your vacation

ENJOY YOUR TRIP.

spot. You and your family can take a tour of the city and its history. There are a number of splendid attractions available to the vacationer. You and the family can visit the Asolo Center for the Performing Arts. Perhaps you would rather watch an opera at the Sarasota Opera House. You and the family can enjoy a full day of fun and excitement at the Mykka River State Park. Or if you like, everyone can enjoy the beautiful and magnificence of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Besides these great attractions, there are a number of very inexpensive restaurants to eat at and enjoy the luxuries of being served. If you are a person that enjoys the nightlife, there are a number of bars and clubs that are but a walking distance from you lodging area. Siesta Key has all the accommodations; all the water based fun, all the sights and sounds of a wonderful vacation for you and the whole family. The question that this author asks is not if, but when, are you and the family going to visit Siesta Key Florida? MEET THE OWNER | GAYLE LUPER Gale Luper is the owner of Bungalow Beach Resort (On Anna Maria Island) and also owner of Siesta Key Bungalows (On Siesta Key). She purchased Bungalow Beach Resort in September 1999 and Siesta Key Bungalows in April 2004. Prior to owning the resorts, Gale was a successful Insurance agent in which she built her company from the ground up. Gale has a Country home in Sarasota, Florida, but spends many days living at her resorts. Gale is single, but during the summer she provides her sons, daughters, nieces, and nephews summer jobs at her resorts. She currently has three, full-time, employees in each of her two resorts. Surf School Spotlight:

Huntington Beach Surf

Academy By Alberto Hernandez

H

untington Beach Surf Academy’s mission is, “to enable young surfers who seek coaching and mentoring the ability to reach their full potential in the water” (Danbara, Kai, n.d.). Owner, mentor and coach, Kai Danbara has a passion to empowering young surfers with the ability to perfect the craft that each child is seeking to master. Kai takes his pupils out to the North side

14

of the Huntington Beach pier, and enables them to learn and succeed despite their perspective obstacles. Kia began mentoring up and coming youth surfers in May of 2014. He decided that he wanted to take his passion for the ocean, and his expertise of surfing, and help kids that wanted to progress as surfers. Most of Kai’s protégés are referrals from the Western Surfing Association (WSA). In essence, Kai is helping these young surf competitors to get better at their craft. Kai told this author that he was planning on starting a class for kids who are beginners towards the end of the summer. A typical day at the academy begins at 9:30 a.m. meet up time on the North side of the Huntington Beach pier. During the first session, Kia has the kids go out and surf the waves and every two or three waves he will critique the kids on their ride. After a couple of hours of mentoring and coaching, Kai will have the kids compete against each other in competitive heats. During that time, Kai will coach and mentor individuals as needed. After the first session Kai and the kids will have lunch and he will ask a well known surfer to share their experiences. By chance, when this author interview Kai, he told me that he asked Dave Langer to speak to the kids. As many of our readers know, Dave is an interracial part of the Ur-

ban Surf 4 Kids family. After lunch and motivation, Kai takes the kids out to the water again and mentors, coaches, critiques, and helps the kids as needed. After a long day of teaching and serving, Kai takes the kids to Banzie Bowl, a popular Huntington Beach Acia fruit bowl location, to enjoy a tasty, and as Kai stated, healthy snack. One of the ways that Kai gives back is by helping provide surf lessons while donating his time and expertise to the Urban Surf 4 Kids Orange County chapter. On September 13, 2014, Kai will help lead a surf camp at the North side of the Huntington Beach Pier for foster youth in the Orange County community. US4k is excited to partner with this great organization.

ing to take a different group of kids to experience the beauty and Aloha Spirit of Hawaii by achieving the relevant core competencies directed by Urban Surf 4 Kids staff and its stake holders. “It’s all about the kids”, Wesley Stewart, founder of Urban Surf 4 Kids, emphatically states, “We are here to empower these wonderful youth and in turn teach them that with hard work and dedication his or her dreams can come true!” What a beautiful statement. This author truly believes that this year’s Dreaming of Aloha event

to maintain a certain grade point average in school, attend life lesson workshops, and serve the community by attending a number of serve events that were hosted by Urban Surf 4 Kids. This year, US4K is seek-

will not only change the perspective of each foster youth that attends, but will give these kids hope that dreams do in fact come true. Stay tuned for more updates as we lead into the event of a lifetime.

of Aloha Update It is that time of the year when the foster youth in San Diego are starting to get excited about the dream surf and serve event that is going to take place in Hawaii in December. Last year, Urban Surf 4 Kids, had the pleasure of taking a group of foster youth to Hawaii for a surf and serve trip. Many of these kids have never had the opportunity to leave the city of San Diego, let alone go to one of the most beautiful Islands in the world. The purpose of the event is to empower foster youth through a number of competencies, and the positive reinforcing result that accompany the foster youths accomplishments. Urban Surf 4 Kids believes in the concept of empowering our youth by giving them the opportunities to achieve certain goals and in the process have the good fortune of attending a dream event of a life time. CRAIG JENKINS by albert hernandez

Every month, US4K is proud to share stories of men and women who take the time out of their busy lives to volunteer at our surf camp and special events. One of the more inspiring men that share his love for the water, and his love for our foster youth in San Diego, is Craig Jenkins. Craig Jenkins is originally from New York, and is happily married to his wife, Erin Jenkins. Craig is one of the many brave men and women that work for Homeland Security. When Craig is not working hard at his craft, Craig enjoys all of the adventurous water sports. Craig loves to: surf, kayak, spear fish, and enjoy in other water sport activities . I asked Craig about how he first heard about Urban Surf 4 Kids. He told me that initially he was mentoring some kids as a Big Brother, and he wanted to share the stoke of the ocean with the kids he was mentoring. He also wanted to start his own surf camps for the kids he was mentoring, so he began to research how to go about it. Craig’s goal was to share his love for the water and empower the most disenfranchised people on the planet, the foster and orphaned youth. His goal was to take what was imbedded in him as a young child, when he was first introduced to the water, and teach others. He came across the Urban Surf 4 Kids web page and was in contact with the founder of US4k, Wesley Stewart. Craig decided to attend an event at the La Jolla Shore, in San Diego, Ca. After watching what US4K was doing at the event, Craig was hooked and decided to volunteer for the next event. The rest, as they say, is history. Craig has become US4k’s lead inwater instructor at the monthly surf camp events hosted by Urban Surf 4 Kis San Di-

18

ego’s Chapter. This author has experienced Craig’s love for the ocean, his heart to volunteer for a great cause, and his love for our foster youth, first hand. Because Craig has done such a phenomenal job at the events, US4k asked him to be the lead inwater volunteer coordinator for Urban Surf 4 Kids So Cali Dreaming event, which will take place on AUgust 30, 2014 in Imperial Beach, Ca. Craig shared a great story of one of his relationships with one of the foster youth. He told me about a young foster youth that is autistic and has a fear of the water. The foster youth had attended many of the events, but for the most part was reluctant to surf. One of US4k’s San Diego Chapter surf camps was hosted by the SoCal Surf Dogs. The young foster youth was very excited to surf with the dogs and not only got on the board with one of the dogs, but stood up on the board. Craig mentioned that that moment was the first time that he witnessed the autistic foster youth stand up on the board. This inspired Craig, and all that are reading this article this author would assume, because it took great courage for the youth to conquer that fear. He noticed how the youth’s boundaries were pushed and how the youth’s confidence was so great that he stood on the board a second time on his own! What a powerful story of courage and determination. All this because a person like Craig volunteered and helped change this young foster youth’s life. It is because of this and many other reasons that US4K is proud to present, Craig Jenkins, Volunteer of the Month for September 2014!

Tortillas + cheese + beans + salsa = Mexican food! These ingredients can be creatively combined to make tacos, quesadillas, burritos, enchiladas, nachos and beyond. Mexican cuisine is celebrat-ed around the world. Yum! Who doesn’t like tacos? However, when I moved to the Mexican Pa-cific I quickly realized that something was missing from my plate. Where was all the green stuff? The occasional sprinkle of cilantro just wasn’t going to cut it. When I requested greens at the local veggie stand I was handed some iceberg lettuce. Hmm, not exactly what I had in mind. I desperately scanned the baskets for anything green. Not surprising-ly, there was no kale to be found, but I did find something green that was rather intriguing. When you think of Mexico what else do you think of? Cactus! Did you know that prickly pear cactus is edible? Not only that, but it’s an incredibly powerful healer. Similar to aloe vera, prickly pear has been used as for its medicinal properties for centuries.

Prickly pear cactus, more commonly known in Mexico as nopal, is a true oasis of nutrition. This desert-loving plant offers a full range of amino acids and is loaded with potassium, magnesium, Vitamin C and anti-oxidants. It can also support your body with reducing inflammation, improv-ing digestive health, promoting weight loss, and strengthening the immune system. If eaten before a party night, nopal can even help prevent a hangover! It’s also interesting to note that nopal is extremely useful for balancing blood sugar, it’s actually a key ingredient in many highly effective blood sugar regulating nutritional supplements. This is not only great for diabetics, but also for athletes who are looking to avoid “bonking” mid workout. Nopal can help keep you out there riding waves for hours! Nopal has become a staple in my Mexican kitchen. I use it stirfrys, green smoothies, juices, sal-ads and tacos! Check out this yummy recipe for nopal tacos.
