Aloha,

Greetings from Daytona Beach! What an exciting time for all of us here at Urban Surf 4 Kids. We are so stoked on this month’s edition. Our goal, when we started this magazine, was to provide a platform to share positive, inspiring and empowering stories that revolve around the water. This month, we hit the BULL’S EYE! Make sure to allot some time to digest the amazing journey of Freddy Carrillo aka Patient Zero. Much love to US4K ambassador, Chaka Webb, for delivering another jewel of a story. Keep chargin’!

As for our program, it’s been amazing to see a tidal wave of passion amongst our volunteers in their efforts to serve (and surf!). Everywhere we look, something is happening! This month was no exception. We were proud to host a surf camp in San Diego as well as a SUP camp up in Orange County, led by longtime and faithful volunteer Mark Ralph (and family). Across the country in Daytona Beach, it was a landmark event to host our first surf camp. It seems that no matter where we are, whether it’s the East or West Coast, kids are stoked on surfing with US4K! Make sure to check out all the photos on page ___.

ports in the disabled community are often called “adaptive sports” and that is because every disability is like a finger print as it affects each person in a different and unique way making each person have to adapt to that sport in a way only they can because of their disability. In each adaptive sport you have one pioneer that was brave enough to be the first to go where no other disabled athlete has gone before, in a sense the “patient zero” of that adaptive sport. When you talk about adaptive surfing in Southern California that pioneer is Freddy Carrillo, Freddy is a T-12 complete paraplegic. Freddy Carrillo is also the first paraplegic to surf on a wave-ski which is now the main type of boards most adaptive surfers use.

Freddy Carrillo grew up in San Juan Capistrano as a normal able bodied kid discovering surfing and skate boarding around the age of ten years old. Freddy like many others from the area meshed his worlds of surfing and skating with his music and Freddy’s clear choice of music was punk rock.

This was the life style Freddy was living surfing, skating, the beach life and punk rock shows in the O.C. as Orange County has always been a hot bed for great punk rock bands in the early 80’s through the late 90’s. Bands like T.S.O.L., The Adolescence, and Channel 3 were all local bands from the area that had a big influence on the kind of music Freddy would listen to.

In 1989 at the age of 18 years old Freddy found himself a passenger in a serious car accident that left him a T-12

complete paraplegic and would change the course of his life forever. In Freddy’s own words when asked how he felt after the accident he said, “I was devastated, I never thought I would surf or skate again, my self-esteem was way down.”

That didn’t last long for Freddy, adaptive sports in the early 90’s were almost nonexistent but thanks to pioneer Brad Parks adaptive skiing was on the rise. In 1992 with the help of friend Leah Herzog, Freddy Carrillo discovered adaptive skiing and he was hooked from the first run at Big Bear.

In 1993 Freddy saw an article in Blast Magazine that had a huge effect on him, in the article Richard Wilcot, Tucker Hall, and Todd Mesic would attempt the “California Triple Crown” ski, skate, and surf all in one day. Freddy thought to himself if he was still able to surf and skate that he would love to do the very same thing. It would be another seven long years before Freddy Carrillo would skate and surf again.

The new millennium would be huge for Freddy Carrillo; in 2000 Freddy would start riding skate parks in a wheelchair made by Mike Box (of Box Wheel Chairs) and for the first since his accident Freddy had that feeling of dropping in and drawing a line across the vertical walls. At that point Freddy was determined to find a way to get back in the water to surf. That is when longtime friend and fellow surf/ skate enthusiast Eugene Roberts told Freddy about a waveski which is a sit down surf board Eugene’s dad (Gene) was riding. He even had a tandem wave-ski that Freddy could

Freddy jumped at the chance and from the first wave he caught he knew he would be back in the water shredding the surf. With the help of Steve Boehne founder of Infinity Surf Boards and the creator of the “Infinity Wave-Ski” Steve shaped Freddy his first wave-ski and little did they both know that moment would change the face of adaptive surfing and Freddy’s life forever. Freddy recalls one of the first few sessions he had surfed independently at Dog Patch he says, “It was 4-6 foot dog patch and I was on a big board, it took me forever to get out, I mean it really took me a long time. I finally made it out and the crowd on the beach was cheering for me, and I caught some really great waves on that day.” You have to remember that nobody in a wheelchair at that time in the year 2000 was surfing a waveski, so this was a defining moment for Freddy and the entire adaptive surf community. Freddy had shown with some heart and water knowledge a paraplegic could safely and effectively ride a wave-ski and have a life changing moment.

Since that day Steve Boehne has shaped many more wave-ski’s for dozens of disabled surfers from all around the world including myself, this is a direct ripple effect from Freddy Carrillo. But Freddy had not forgotten about that old article about the California Triple Crown, skiing, skating, and surfing all in the same day because now Freddy Carrillo is doing all those adaptive sports at a very high level. So Freddy set in motion the plans to do just that, with the help of

friends Kim McRae, Maggie Franks, Shannon Van Dyke, and others Freddy set a date.

March 18th 2016 was a Friday and Freddy and crew were already prepared in Big Bear on chair 9 at 9:00 am for the first run on the first leg of the journey, Kim and Freddy skied many different runs until 11:00 am, then they loaded up the crew and headed down the mountain to Etnies Skate Park in Lake Forrest where Freddy arrived at 2:00 pm and ripped up the skate park for an hour until 3:00 pm then he loaded up the crew to head off to San Onofre State Beach for the last leg of the California Triple Crown.

As a paraplegic and adaptive surfer myself, I heard about Freddy Carrillo when I first started surfing and before I ever met him I envisioned someone totally different. You see Freddy’s friends affectionately call him “Monster” and when you hear about a hard charging, punk rocking paraplegic that ski’s, skates, and surfs with the nick name Monster you kind of get a picture in your head of what that guy might be like, well take that picture and throw it out the window. Freddy Carrillo does not seek the spot light, nor is he loud, or obnoxious, Freddy Carrillo is soft spoken, very respectful, and courteous. Once I met Freddy we became fast friends and remain very good friends today so when Freddy invited me to surf Sano for the last leg of the California Triple Crown with him I could not pass it up, any day on the water with Freddy is a good day.

I arrived at San Onofre early so I could scout out the tide and surf conditions, Freddy and crew arrived at about 4:30 pm and once they got the film crew ready they sent some cameras in the water and launched Freddy into the surf. Conditions were not great but it was 2-3 foot and was getting better as the tide filled in. As the sun started to set the wind calmed a bit as to invite Freddy to complete one of his lifelong dreams, a small set came through as Freddy took off right I split the peak with him and went left, and I could hear the crowd on the beach once again cheering for Freddy as he again did something no other paraplegic has done before. The California Triple Crown Ski, Skate, Surf was now complete for the first time by adaptive athlete and Freddy Carrillo had a long time dream realized.

Having the opportunity to watch someone (anyone) accomplish a dream is moving but to get a chance to watch someone who has inspired you, and become a great friend and mentor complete a lifelong dream is a gift that Freddy Carrillo shared with me and many other close friends.

To see the sheer stoke and sense of accomplishment on Freddy’s face was awesome, when I asked Freddy if there was anything he wanted the readers to know he gave me this gem, “I just want people to know I’m an everyday guy, I work a full time job, I work hard and play harder. Don’t let anything stop you, ever. I want to say you do not have to be a champion to accomplish your dream, don’t ever give up on your dreams.”

For every adaptive surfer that is riding a wave-ski and pushing their limits on every wave, to the next adaptive athlete that sets out to complete the ski, skate, surf Triple Crown you are traveling a path set by a pioneer, a hard charging, punk rock paraplegic named Monster, a humble warrior who has blazed a path for all adaptive athletes to follow.

t takes great mobility, focus, endurance and strength to ride the blue waves of the ocean, which means, it’s very important to eat clean. You’re probably saying, “What does eating have to do with just catching a wave, and what does eating clean mean?”

Well eating clean is basically deciding to remove processed foods from your diet, as these items contain a great deal of sugar, lots of artificial ingredients which is laced with chemicals that will eventually take a toll on your body depleting it of the essential nutrients that is needed to function.

Surfing is a solid sport needing one to have great swimming skills, balance, mental clarity and constant muscle interactions. Therefore, nutrient-based foods should be on your daily agenda.

A clean diet of whole foods consisting of vegetables, fruits, quality proteins, and healthy fats (avocados, coconut oil) is what a surfer needs to hit those wild waves. In addition, do not forget breakfast it will always be the most important meal of the day. So prior to your fun day surfing the waves, eat a piece of fruit with some nuts to give you energy or a small meal.

A day of surfing usually means a long day full of the sun rays which can lead to dehydration, so it’s important to stay hydrated, this does not mean drinking a soda, artificial flavored water, or sports drink these items does nothing to replenish the body to a healthy state.

Therefore, the best way to hydrate is to drink spring water and add fresh lemon, limes, strawberries, or blueberries which are full antioxidants. The taste is not only refreshing, but the antioxidant plays a very significant role in keeping the body cleanse from free radicals that causes toxins in the body and antioxidants helps to fight free radical from attacking the body.

If anyone wants a healthier lifestyle it has to exclude the processed foods, like white flour, vegetable oils (canola) and excessive refined sugars that is in everything. With natural sugars coming from fruits, raw honey, or agave they are considered healthier, as they contain nutrients. However, all sugars should be taken into moderation. So even though natural watch your intake, as it can lead to illness and obesity.

So whether you are a surfer, mom, young teen or dad, it’s very important to have a healthy lifestyle because without good health and energy, it’s hard to focus, stay energized, and immune to disease.

So to catch the waves of life, its takes a well-balanced diet that includes; proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables. If your budget allows go organic or go to your local farmers market. In addition, always enjoy a meal for breakfast to start day.

10 youth enjoyed an amazing day on the water and were inspired by paralympian Gregory Crouse who paddled with them and shared his story with them. Special thanks to the Newport Aquatic Center for use of their facility/equipment, the delicious pizza from California Pizza Kitchen, event director Mark Ralph, and the faithful volunteers for their time in serving. Look forward to more great events in the OC!

SURF CAMP MARCH 29th Daytona Beach

It was incredible to kick off the first surf camp yesterday in Daytona Beach!

We had an amazing group of youth and volunteers! The stoke was on, as everyone enjoyed perfect weather, some really fun waves, and the OHANA of each other! Special “THANKS” to: Fratelli’s Pizzeria (it was sooo good!), our friends @ Pure Life Surf School for providing equipment, and our guest speaker Martin & Carmen Bentley for sharing their lives as missionaries to our youth & volunteers, and all of the awesome volunteers (you guys rocked it!)! Can’t wait for April 23rd to do it again!

US4K’s got me completely wrapped up and invested in their mission. If you don’t know what I am referring to, I suggest you go take a gander at Urban Surf 4 Kid’s website and get informed on their mission and journey. I guarantee after reading the first sentence, you no longer will be reading about the company, you will be 100% motivated by curiosity and a personal call to action.

You will suddenly become as big of an advocate as I am. If you don’t believe me, go check it out for yourself.

Now that I have prepared you for the emotional attachment you will soon develop, let’s talk about Urban Surf 4 Kid’s most recent Surf Camp that took place on February 20th. It was a wonderful thing to be apart of. Now, I have to admit I am not the most equipped girl in the water, so I chose to volunteer and stay on land to do more of the logistics instead of the surfing portion. This was clearly the wrong choice since within minutes of the kids arriving the wetsuits were being pulled on. I was immediately drawn to follow all the kids and volunteers down to La Jolla Shores.

I could’ve sat there and watched their joy take over the entire stretch of the coastline forever – and I did, or at least I did for the 4+ hours the kids were there for. Boredom seems so frivolous when you can find yourself completely enthralled in simply watching someone else’s memories being created moment by moment.

I have volunteered for a variety of different causes in my life, but this is something completely unique.

We live in San Diego, I mean, could we been any luckier? The thought of a day at the beach being a rare occurrence is unsettling at best. But if I can get anything across in the blurb, it is this… observing what was taking place that day will be one of the most rewarding things you will have the pleasure of experiencing. Watching volunteers get to use their servant hearts and passion about surfing to bring so much laugher and joy into these kid’s lives is a blessing to be present in. The irony of it all is how effortless this copious amount of joy was to surface out of those beautiful souls. This organization isn’t asking you for anything but your time.

Laughter and joy is easy when given the opportunity to do so, being present will be accompanied by joy.

I won’t make the same mistake twice, next time I will squeeze into that wetsuit and spend every moment simply enjoying the process.

What an easy way to make a tremendous difference and all I have been asked to do is hangout with some really amazing adolescents and kids.

Don’t worry about the rest; we will happily do it all. We provide the time and place, our amazingly generous sponsors’ provide the gear and food, therefore all you have to do is provide the opportunity to make a kid’s day better! I began to explore the world of photography about two years ago. Living with PTSD, photography has allowed me to express myself and acknowledge a sense of self-worth.

What does the ocean mean to you?

The ocean is, and has, always been a very special place to me. It offers me a chance to clear my mind and leave all my worries on shore.
